RESUMO

Medicinal plants are a valuable source of essential medicines and herbal products for healthcare and disease therapy. Compared with chemical synthesis and extraction, the biosynthesis of natural products is a very promising alternative for the successful conservation of medicinal plants, and its rapid development will greatly facilitate the conservation and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants. Here, we summarize the advances in strategies and methods concerning the biosynthesis and production of natural products of medicinal plants. The strategies and methods mainly include genetic engineering, plant cell culture engineering, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology based on multiple "OMICS" technologies, with paradigms for the biosynthesis of terpenoids and alkaloids. We also highlight the biosynthetic approaches and discuss progress in the production of some valuable natural products, exemplifying compounds such as vindoline (alkaloid), artemisinin and paclitaxel (terpenoids), to illustrate the power of biotechnology in medicinal plants.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Compound Jixuecao Decoction (CJD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine prescribed in China to treat chronic renal failure (CRF). Previous studies have shown that CJD affects cell apoptosis and proliferation. However, the mechanism of its renal protective action has not been characterized. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the mechanism(s) underlying the effect of CJD on endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and apoptosis in the treatment of CRF using network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and in vivo studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The compounds comprising CJD were extracted from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database. A Swiss target prediction database and similarity integration approach were employed to identify potential targets of these components. The GeneCards and DisGeNET databases were used to identify targets associated with CRF, apoptosis, and ERS. The STRING database was employed to analyze the protein-protein interactions (PPIs) associated with drug-disease crossover. A chemical composition-shared target network was established, and critical pathways were identified through gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses. The Protein Data Bank database was used to search key proteins, while molecular docking and dynamics simulations were performed between the top four CJD active ingredients and proteins involved in apoptosis and ERS in CRF. Subsequent in vivo studies using a 5/6 nephrectomy rat model of CRF were performed to verify the findings. RESULTS: The 80 compounds identified in CJD yielded 875 target genes, of which 216 were potentially related to CRF. PPI network analysis revealed key targets via topology filtering. Enrichment analysis, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation results suggested that CJD primarily targets mitofusin-2 (MFN2), B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL2), BAX, protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK), and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) during CRF treatment. In vivo, CJD significantly increased the abundance of MFN2, BCL2, and significantly reduced the abundance of BAX, PERK, CHOP proteins in kidney tissues, indicating that CJD could improve apoptosis and ERS in CRF rats. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that CJD effectively delays CFR through modulation of the MFN2 and PERK-eIF2α-ATF4-CHOP signaling pathways.

Recently, a global outbreak of COVID-19 has rapidly spread to various national regions. As the number of COVID-19 patients has increased, some of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 have developed a variety of psychiatric symptoms, including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue. A distinct storm of inflammatory factors that contribute to the initial disease but also a persistent post-acute phase syndrome has been reported in patients with COVID-19. Neuropsychological symptoms including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue are closely related to circulating and local (brain) inflammatory factors. Natural products are currently being examined for their ability to treat numerous complications caused by COVID-19. Among them, ginseng has anti-inflammatory, immune system stimulating, neuroendocrine modulating, and other effects, which may help improve psychiatric symptoms. This review summarizes the basic mechanisms of COVID-19 pneumonia, psychiatric symptoms following coronavirus infections, effects of ginseng on depression, restlessness, and other psychiatric symptoms associated with post-COVID syn-dromes, as well as possible mechanisms underlying these effects.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Tai Chi on cognitive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. METHODS: A systematic search of eight English and five Chinese electronic databases was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials of Tai Chi as the intervention. The main outcomes included executive function, episodic memory, visuospatial function, working memory, concentration, memory complaints, and global cognition. The Cochrane RoB tool was used to assess bias in the study. Meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.4. Narrative syntheses were performed if meta-analysis was inappropriate. RESULTS: A total of eleven trials (905 participants) were included. Meta-analysis showed that Tai Chi significantly and moderately affected executive function (SMD = -1.01, 95% CI: -1.54 to -0.47, p < 0.001), episodic memory (SMD = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.24 to 0.94, p = 0.001), visuospatial function (SMD = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.15 to 0.60, p < 0.001), and global cognition (SMD = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.14 to 1.00, p = 0.01).One study showed that Tai Chi could improve verbal fluency. CONCLUSIONS: This review reveals that Tai Chi can improve executive function, episodic memory, visuospatial function, and global cognition in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, but not working memory, concentration, or memory complaints. These findings are consist with existing reviews about the effectiveness of Tai Chi. Long-duration (> 1500 min) Tai Chi is more effective for improving global cognition. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the potential risk of bias and limited sample sizes of the included studies. Future trials should examine the effectiveness of standardized Tai Chi intervention on cognitive outcomes in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: To explore the cut-off values of haemoglobin (Hb) on adverse clinical outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients based on a national-level database. METHODS: The observational cohort study was from the Peritoneal Dialysis Telemedicine-assisted Platform (PDTAP) dataset. The primary outcomes were all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and modified MACE (MACE+). The secondary outcomes were the occurrences of hospitalization, first-episode peritonitis and permanent transfer to haemodialysis (HD). RESULTS: A total of 2591 PD patients were enrolled between June 2016 and April 2019 and followed up until December 2020. Baseline and time-averaged Hb <100 g/l were associated with all-cause mortality, MACE, MACE+ and hospitalizations. After multivariable adjustments, only time-averaged Hb <100 g/l significantly predicted a higher risk for all-cause mortality {hazard ratio [HR] 1.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-281], P = .006}, MACE [HR 1.99 (95% CI 1.16-3.40), P = .012] and MACE+ [HR 1.77 (95% CI 1.15-2.73), P = .010] in the total cohort. No associations between Hb and hospitalizations, transfer to HD and first-episode peritonitis were observed. Among patients with Hb ≥100 g/l at baseline, younger age, female, use of iron supplementation, lower values of serum albumin and renal Kt/V independently predicted the incidence of Hb <100 g/l during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: This study provided real-world evidence on the cut-off value of Hb for predicting poorer outcomes through a nation-level prospective PD cohort.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: FuZheng YiLiu Formula (FZYL) is a commonly used formula for postoperative estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer and post-radiotherapy deficiency of both Qi and Yin. FZYL has been used in clinical practice for decades because of its ability to effectively improve the symptoms of deficiency in cancer patients. However, its mechanism needs to be further clarified. In this paper, we will observe the effect of FZYL on mice with ER+ breast cancer and explore the mechanism by which it improves the symptoms of ER+ breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tumor xenograft mouse model was established to detect tumor growth in vivo in order to evaluate the pharmacological effects of FZYL on ER+ breast cancer. The main targets of FZYL were identified by extracting the FZYL components and the corresponding potential target genes of breast cancer from the established database and constructing a protein-protein interaction network of shared genes using the string database. GO functional annotation and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis were performed, and molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, western blotting analysis, and RT-qPCR were performed to confirm the validity of targets in the relevant pathways. RESULTS: FZYL was able to significantly reduce the size of tumors in vivo and had a significant therapeutic effect on tumor xenograft mice. GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses indicated that the effects of FZYL may be mediated by oxidative stress levels, apoptotic signaling pathways, and cell cycle proliferation. By RT-qPCR and protein blotting assays, FZYL targeted the key targets of TP53, JUN, ESR1, RELA, MYC, and MAPK1 to exert its effects. The key active components of FZYL are quercetin, luteolin, stigmasterol, and glycitein. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation results further demonstrated that the key active components of FZYL are stably bound to the core targets. CONCLUSION: In this study, the potential active ingredients, potential core targets, key biological pathways, and signaling pathways involved in the treatment of breast cancer with FZYL were identified, providing a theoretical basis for further anti ER+ breast cancer research.

Aroma is one of the significant quality factors of dark tea (DT). However, for a single large-leaf tea variety, there are few studies analyzing the effect of pile-fermentation on the aroma quality of DT. The GC × GC-QTOFMS, electronic nose (E-nose) and GC-olfactometry (GC-O) techniques were employed to analysis the difference of tea products before and after pile-fermentation. A total of 149 volatile metabolites (VMs) were identified, with 92 VMs exhibiting differential characteristics. Among these, 31 VMs with OAV > 1.0 were found to be correlated with E-nose results (|r| > 0.8). Additionally, GC-O analysis validated seven major differential metabolites. Notably, naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, and dibenzofuran were found to enhance the woody aroma, while (Z)-4-heptenal, 2-nonenal and 1-hexanol were associated with an increase in mushroom, fatty and sweet odors, respectively. Moreover, 1-octen-3-ol was linked to reducing pungent fishy smell. These findings could provide a certain theoretical basis for understanding the influence of pile-fermentation on the aroma quality of dark tea.

BACKGROUND: An imbalance of osteoblasts (OBs) and osteoclasts (OCs) in a chronic inflammatory microenvironment is an important pathological factor leading to osteoporosis. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been shown to suppress inflammation in macrophages and adipocytes. However, the effect of EPA on OBs and OCs has yet to be fully elucidated. AIMS: We explored the roles of EPA in the differentiation of OBs and OCs, as well as the coupling between OBs and OCs in an inflammatory microenvironment. The effects of EPA on estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis were also evaluated. METHODS: Mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) and mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (mBMMs) were used for in vitro OBs and OCs differentiation. TNF-α was used to create an inflammatory microenvironment. We examined the effects of EPA on osteoblastogenesis in the absence or presence of TNF-α and collect OBs' culture medium as the conditioned medium (CM). Then we examined the effects of EPA and CM on RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis. The in vivo effects of EPA were determined using an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model treated with EPA or vehicle. RESULTS: High-dose EPA was shown to promote osteoblastogenesis in an inflammatory environment in vitro, as well as upregulate expression of OBs-specific proteins and genes. ARS and ALP staining also showed that high-dose EPA-treated groups restored mBMSCs' impaired osteogenic capacity caused by TNFa. Mechanistically, EPA suppressed the NF-κB pathway activated by TNF-α in mBMSCs and rescued TNF-α-mediated inhibition of osteoblastogenesis. EPA was also shown to inhibit expression of RANKL and decrease the RANKL/OPG ratio in OBs in an inflammatory environment. CM from TNF-α-stimulated OBs promoted osteoclastogenesis of mBMMs; EPA-treated CM prevented this. In the OVX mouse model, EPA supplementation prevented bone loss in an estrogen deficiency-induced inflammatory environment. CONCLUSIONS: EPA was demonstrated for the first time to restore mBMSCs' impaired osteogenic capacity caused by TNFa-induced inflammation and rescue the OBs/OCs balance via regulation of RANKL and OPG expression in OBs. EPA showed a remarkable ability to prevent bone loss in OVX mice, suggesting a potential application of EPA in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Perilla frutescens, an annual herb of the Labiatae family, has been cultivated in China for more than 2000 years. P. frutescens is the one of the first medicinal and edible plant published by the Ministry of Health. Its leaves, stems and seeds can be used as medicine and edible food. Because of the abundant nutrients and bioactive components in this plant, P. frutescens has been studied extensively in medicine, food, health care and chemical fields with great prospects for development. This paper reviews the cultivation history, chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of P. frutescens, which provides a reference for the development and utilization of P. frutescens resources.

The clinical applications of phototherapy nanomaterials are still limited due to concerns regarding their phototoxicity and efficacy. Herein, we report a novel type of D-π-A molecular backbone that induces type I/II photosensitivity and photodegradability by forming J-aggregates. The photodegradation rate can be regulated by changing the donor groups to regulate the photosensitivity of their aggregates because the photodegradability performance results from their oxidation by 1O2 generated by their type II photosensitivity. AID4 NPs possess faster photodegradation because of their better type I&II photosensitivity, which can also self-regulate by inhibiting type II and improving type I under hypoxic conditions. Moreover, they exhibited good photothermal and photoacoustic performance for improving their therapeutic effect by a synergistic effect and achieving photoacoustic imaging in vivo. The experimental result also showed that they can be effective for antibacterial and anti-tumor treatment and the photodegradation products of AID4 NPs possess low biological toxicity in the dark or under light. This study could provide a novel strategy for improving the safety and treatment effects of phototherapy.

The brain-computer interface (BCI) based on motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) enables direct information interaction between the human brain and external devices. In this paper, a multi-scale EEG feature extraction convolutional neural network model based on time series data enhancement is proposed for decoding MI-EEG signals. First, an EEG signals augmentation method was proposed that could increase the information content of training samples without changing the length of the time series, while retaining its original features completely. Then, multiple holistic and detailed features of the EEG data were adaptively extracted by multi-scale convolution module, and the features were fused and filtered by parallel residual module and channel attention. Finally, classification results were output by a fully connected network. The application experimental results on the BCI Competition IV 2a and 2b datasets showed that the proposed model achieved an average classification accuracy of 91.87% and 87.85% for the motor imagery task, respectively, which had high accuracy and strong robustness compared with existing baseline models. The proposed model does not require complex signals pre-processing operations and has the advantage of multi-scale feature extraction, which has high practical application value.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Blood-activating and stasis-transforming traditional Chinese medicines (BAST) are a class of herbs that have the effect of dilating blood vessels and dispersing stagnation. Modern pharmaceutical research has demonstrated that they are capable of improving hemodynamics and micro-flow, resist thrombosis and promote blood flow. BAST contain numerous active ingredients, which can theoretically regulate multiple targets at the same time and have a wide range of pharmacological effects in the treatment of diseases including human cancers. Clinically, BAST have minimal side effects and can be used in combination with Western medicine to improve patients' quality of life, lessen adverse effects and minimize the risk of recurrence and metastasis of cancers. AIM OF THE REVIEW: We aimed to summarize the research progression of BAST on lung cancer in the past five years and present a prospect for the future. Particularly, this review further analyzes the effects and molecular mechanisms that BAST inhibit the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant studies about BSAT were collected from PubMed and Web of science. RESULTS: Lung cancer is one of the malignant tumors with the highest mortality rate. Most patients with lung cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage and are highly susceptible to metastasis. Recent studies have shown that BAST, a class of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with the function of opening veins and dispersing blood stasis, significantly improve hemodynamics and microcirculation, prevent thrombosis and promote blood flow, and thereby inhibiting the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. In the current review, we analyzed 51 active ingredients extracted from BAST. It was found that BAST and their active ingredients contribute to the prevention of invasion and metastasis of lung cancer through multiple mechanisms, such as regulation of EMT process, specific signaling pathway and metastasis-related genes, tumor blood vessel formation, immune microenvironment and inflammatory response of tumors. CONCLUSIONS: BSAT and its active ingredients have showed promising anticancer activity and significantly inhibit the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. A growing number of studies have realized their potential clinical significance in the therapy of lung cancer, which will provide substantial evidences for the development of new TCM for lung cancer therapy.

Artemisia argyi Lévl. et Vant., a perennial Artemisia herb with an intense fragrance, is widely used in traditional medicine in China and many other Asian countries. Here, we present a chromosome-scale genome assembly of A. argyi comprising 3.89 Gb assembled into 17 pseudochromosomes. Phylogenetic and comparative genomic analyses revealed that A. argyi underwent a recent lineage-specific whole-genome duplication (WGD) event after divergence from Artemisia annua, resulting in two subgenomes. We deciphered the diploid ancestral genome of A. argyi, and unbiased subgenome evolution was observed. The recent WGD led to a large number of duplicated genes in the A. argyi genome. Expansion of the terpene synthase (TPS) gene family through various types of gene duplication may have greatly contributed to the diversity of volatile terpenoids in A. argyi. In particular, we identified a typical germacrene D synthase gene cluster within the expanded TPS gene family. The entire biosynthetic pathways of germacrenes, (+)-borneol, and (+)-camphor were elucidated in A. argyi. In addition, partial deletion of the amorpha-4,11-diene synthase (ADS) gene and loss of function of ADS homologs may have resulted in the lack of artemisinin production in A. argyi. Our study provides new insights into the genome evolution of Artemisia and lays a foundation for further improvement of the quality of this important medicinal plant.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of family integrated care (FICare) on the prognosis of children hospitalized with preterm infants. METHODS: Two hundred thirty preterm infants admitted to our hospital from January 2019 to April 2021 were enrolled in a prospective randomized study and divided into 115 cases in the intervention group and 115 cases in the control group according to the random number table method, and given the FICare and the conventional care, respectively. The duration of nasogastric tube retention, time to achieve total enteral nutrition, rate of weight gain, exclusive breastfeeding rate, length of hospital stay, growth and development, readmission rate, parental self-efficacy, family functioning and complications related to prematurity were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the intervention group had shorter nasogastric tube retention time, shorter time to achieve total enteral nutrition, higher exclusive breastfeeding rate, shorter time of hospital stay and better growth rate. Before the intervention, there was no difference in parental self-efficacy and family functioning between the two groups; after the intervention, the intervention group had higher parental self-efficacy and higher ratings of family functioning, and the difference was statistically significant. Compared with the control group, the intervention group had a lower readmission rate and significantly lower incidence of infection and choking. CONCLUSION: The FICare can shorten the time of nasogastric tube retention, shorten time to achieve total enteral nutrition and hospital stay, increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding and the rate of weight gain, finally improve the prognosis of preterm infants and have a positive effect on parents.

Persistent inflammatory infiltration of skeletal muscle is a principal trigger for the loss of muscle mass and strength. Theaflavins, the main functional components of black tea, have effects on muscle health, but their biological effects on skeletal muscle inflammation are unclear. We constructed in vitro and in vivo models of muscle inflammation and found that theaflavins reduced the expression of inflammatory factors (IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α) by regulating the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway to alleviate muscle inflammation. In addition, TF1 can regulate the metabolic function of skeletal muscle under inflammatory conditions, reduce the content of proinflammatory substances, improve the mechanical properties (stiffness and roughness) of the surface of inflammatory myotubes, and promote the recovery of muscle after an inflammatory injury. In conclusion, theaflavins may serve as a diet-derived anti-inflammatory factor with potential modulatory effects on skeletal muscle metabolism and mechanical properties in an inflammatory environment.

Uranium mining and nuclear fuel production have led to significant U contamination. Past studies have focused on the bioreduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) as a remediation method. However, U(IV) is susceptible to reoxidation and remobilization when conditions change. Here, we demonstrate that a combination of adsorption and bioreduction of U(VI) in the presence of an organic ligand (siderophore desferrioxamine B, DFOB) and the Fe-rich clay mineral nontronite partially alleviated this problem. DFOB greatly facilitated U(VI) adsorption into the interlayer of nontronite as a stable U(VI)-DFOB complex. This complex was likely reduced by bioreduction intermediates such as the Fe(II)-DFOB complex and/or through electron transfer within a ternary Fe(II)-DFOB-U(VI) complex. Bioreduction with DFOB alone resulted in a mobile aqueous U(IV)-DFOB complex, but in the presence of both DFOB and nontronite U(IV) was sequestered into a solid. These results provide novel insights into the mechanisms of U(VI) bioreduction and the stability of U and have important implications for understanding U biogeochemistry in the environment and for developing a sustainable U remediation approach.

Motor imagery electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are non-stationary time series with a low signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, the single-channel EEG analysis method is difficult to effectively describe the interaction characteristics between multi-channel signals. This paper proposed a deep learning network model based on the multi-channel attention mechanism. First, we performed time-frequency sparse decomposition on the pre-processed data, which enhanced the difference of time-frequency characteristics of EEG signals. Then we used the attention module to map the data in time and space so that the model could make full use of the data characteristics of different channels of EEG signals. Finally, the improved time-convolution network (TCN) was used for feature fusion and classification. The BCI competition IV-2a data set was used to verify the proposed algorithm. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could effectively improve the classification accuracy of motor imagination EEG signals, which achieved an average accuracy of 83.03% for 9 subjects. Compared with the existing methods, the classification accuracy of EEG signals was improved. With the enhanced difference features between different motor imagery EEG data, the proposed method is important for the study of improving classifier performance.

Background: Polyene phosphatidylcholine (PPC) has been widely used to treat liver diseases in China. However, there is a lack of post-marketing evidence demonstrating its liver-protective efficiency among patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). This study analyzed the multicenter real-world data to compare the effectiveness of PPC with those of magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (IsoMag) and glutathione (GSH) in patients with liver injury. Methods: This study comprised the real-world data analysis of a multicenter, retrospective observational cohort. The data were retrieved from the Cooperative Registry of the Hospital Prescription in China between 1 October 2018, and 30 September 2019. A growth curve analysis was performed to compare the effects of different treatments on liver function longitudinally for up to 30 days after treatment commencement. In addition, the dose effect of the PPC treatment was investigated. Results: The final cohort included 6,052 patients with approximately 8% infected with HBV (N = 471). There were 1,649, 1,750, and 2,653 patients in the PPC, GSH, and IsoMag groups, respectively, with an average age of 53.9 years. In patients with HBV infection, the PPC treatment was associated with a significant decline in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels (slopes: -3.7, 95% CI, -6.0 to -1.5 U/L/day; -2.4, 95% CI, -4.5 to -0.3 U/L/day, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in the effects among the three groups. In patients without HBV infection, the PPC treatment decreased ALT, AST, γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and albumin levels (-5.2, 95% CI, -5.8 to -4.5 U/L/day; -3.5, 95% CI, -4.2 to -2.7 U/L/day; -4.9, 95% CI, -6.2 to -3.7 U/L/day, -0.07, 95% CI, -0.09 to -0.04 g/L/day, respectively) and showed a stronger effect on lowering ALT levels than GSH (-2.6, 95% CI, -3.3 to -1.8 U/L/day, p < 0.05), as well as a stronger effect on lowering GGT levels than IsoMag (-1.4, 95% CI, -2.4 to -0.4 U/L/day, p < 0.05). PPC had no impact on prothrombin activity levels in patients with or without HBV infection. High-dose PPC exhibited a stronger effect on lowering ALT and AST levels than low-dose PPC. Conclusion: This was the first real-world multicenter study to demonstrate that PPC efficiently lowers ALT and AST levels in patients with liver diseases regardless of the status of HBV infection. PPC treatment showed a comparable or better effect compared with GSH and IsoMag treatments. High-dose PPC resulted in a stronger effect than low-dose PPC.

The purpose of this meta-analysis is to systematically examine the efficacy of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) for patients with dementia. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane libraries were searched till November 2021 to collect studies in relation to AAT that had been adopted in patients with dementia. Eleven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 825 participants were included. Compared with the control group, the AAT group showed a significant reduction in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), especially depression. However, no significant improvement was found in cognitive function, activities of daily living, agitation, or the quality of life. This meta-analysis shows that AAT can effectively reduce BPSD in patients with dementia.

Surgical resection is a widely used method for the treatment of solid tumor cancers. However, the inhibition of tumor recurrence and metastasis are the main challenges of postoperative tumor therapy. Traditional intravenous or oral administration have poor chemotherapeutics bioavailability and undesirable systemic toxicity. Polymeric hydrogels with a three-dimensional network structure enable on-site delivery and controlled release of therapeutic drugs with reduced systemic toxicity and have been widely developed for postoperative adjuvant tumor therapy. Among them, because of the simple synthesis, good biocompatibility, biodegradability, injectability, and multifunctionality, iron-based hydrogels have received extensive attention. This review has summarized the general synthesis methods and construction principles of iron-based hydrogels, highlighted the latest progress of iron-based hydrogels in postoperative tumor therapy, including chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, chemo-dynamic therapy, and magnetothermal-chemical combined therapy, etc. In addition, the challenges towards clinical application of iron-based hydrogels have also been discussed. This review is expected to show researchers broad perspectives of novel postoperative tumor therapy strategy and provide new ideas in the design and application of novel iron-based hydrogels to advance this sub field in cancer nanomedicine.
