To investigate the quality differences between the seeds and husks of Amomum villosum and explore the rationality of using the seeds without husks, this study determined the content of protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, epicatechin, quercitrin, volatile oil, water extract, and ethanol extract. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS), and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were determined to evaluate the antioxidant activities of seeds and husks. The quality differences between the seeds and husks were assessed through orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) and analytic hierarchy process(AHP) combined with the entropy weight method(EWM). Significant differences(P<0.05) were observed in all 10 indicators between the seeds and husks. The levels of epicatechin, quercetin, and volatile oil were higher in the seeds, whereas those of protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, water extract, and ethanol extract were higher in the husks. The seeds showed stronger scavenging ability against DPPH and ABTS radicals, while the husks showed a stronger scavenging effect on hydroxyl radicals. OPLS-DA significantly discriminated between the seeds and husks. Furthermore, volatile oil, water extract, DPPH radical scavenging rate, quercitrin, ABTS radical scavenging rate, hydroxyl radical scavenging rate, and vanillic acid were selected as the main differential indicators by variable importance in projection(VIP). Comprehensive scores calculated by AHP combined with EWM indicated that the seeds were superior to husks in terms of overall quality. However, there are still some dominant components and a certain antioxidant effect in the husks. Therefore, it is suggested to using Amomi Fructus with a certain amount of husks or utilizing the husks for other purposes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver injury (CLI) is a complex condition that requires effective therapeutic interventions. The Yi-Shan-Hong (YSH) formula is an empirically derived remedy that has shown effectiveness and safety in the management of chronic liver damage. However, the bioactive components and multifaceted mechanisms of YSH remain inadequately understood. PURPOSE: To examine the bioactive compounds and functional processes that contribute to the therapeutic benefits of YSH against CLI. METHODS: Serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology were employed to identify active compounds and possible targets of YSH in CLI. In addition, YSH was also given in three doses to d-(+)-galactosamine hydrochloride (D-GalN) -induced CLI rats to test its therapeutic efficacy. RESULTS: The analysis of serum samples successfully detected 25 compounds from YSH. Searches on the databases resulted in 277 genes as being correlated with chemicals in YSH, and 397 genes associated with CLI. In vivo experiments revealed that YSH displayed a notable therapeutic impact on liver injury caused by d-GalN. This was evidenced by enhanced liver function and histopathological improvements, reduced oxidative stress response, proinflammatory factors, and fibrosis levels. Importantly, no discernible adverse effects were observed. Furthermore, the administration of YSH treatment reversed the activation of AKT phosphorylation caused by d-GalN, aligning with the findings of the network pharmacology study. CONCLUSION: These findings provide preclinical evidence of YSH's therapeutic value in CLI and highlight its hepatoprotective action via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Seven new triterpenoids, named Adeterpenoids A-G (1-7) and eight known compounds (8-15), were isolated from 70% ethanol extract of the roots of Adenophora tetraphylla (Thub.) Fisch. The compounds from it were separated by column chromatography techniques such as silica gel, ODS, and preparative liquid chromatography. Their structures were clarified based on extensive spectral analysis (1D, 2D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS, IR, UV, and CD) and comparison with the literature. At the same time, all compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against the LN229 (human glioma cell line). The results showed that compounds 2, 5, 6, 13, and 14 had a significant inhibitory effect on LN229 cells.

The exogenous application of amino acids (AAs) generally alleviates cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plants by altering their subcellular distribution. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying AA-mediated cell wall (CW) sequestration of Cd in Chinese cabbage remain unclear. Using two genotypes of Chinses cabbage, Jingcui 60 (Cd-tolerant) and 16-7 (Cd-sensitive), we characterized the root structure, subcellular distribution of Cd, CW component, and related gene expression under the Cd stress. Cysteine (Cys) supplementation led to a reduction in the Cd concentration in the shoots of Jingcui 60 and 16-7 by 65.09 % and 64.03 %, respectively. Addition of Cys alleviated leaf chlorosis in both cultivars by increasing Cd chelation in the root CW and reducing its distribution in the cytoplasm and organelles. We further demonstrated that Cys supplementation mediated the downregulation of PMEI1 expression and improving the activity of pectin methyl-esterase (PME) by 17.98 % and 25.52 % in both cultivars, respectively, compared to the Cd treatment, resulting in an approximate 12.00 %-14.70 % increase in Cd retention in pectin. In contrast, threonine (Thr) application did not significantly alter Cd distribution in the shoots of either cultivar. Taken together, our results suggest that Cys application reduces Cd root-to-shoot translocation by increasing Cd sequestration in the root CW through the downregulation of pectin methyl-esterification.

Calcium-silicon-magnesium-potassium fertilizer (CSMP) is usually used as an amendment to counteract soil acidification caused by historical excessive nitrogen (N) applications. However, the impact of CSMP addition on phosphorus (P) mobilization in acidic soils and the related mechanisms are not fully understood. Specifically, a knowledge gap exists with regards to changes in soil extracellular enzymes that contribute to P release. Such a knowledge gap was investigated by an incubation study with four treatments: i) initial soil (Control), ii) urea (60 mg kg-1) addition (U); iii) CSMP (1%) addition (CSMP) and iv) urea (60 mg kg-1) and CSMP (1%) additions (U + CSMP). Phosphorus mobilization induced by different processes was distinguished by biologically based P extraction. The Langmuir equation, K edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, and ecoenzyme vector analysis according to the extracellular enzyme activity stoichiometry were deployed to investigate soil P sorption intensity, precipitation species, and microbial-driven turnover of organophosphorus. Results showed that CaCl2 extractable P (or citric acid extractable P) content increased by 63.4% (or 39.2%) in the soil with CSMP addition, compared with the study control. The accelerated mobilization of aluminum (Al)/iron (Fe)-bound P after CSMP addition, indicated by the reduction of the sum of FePO4·2H2O and AlPO4 proportion, contributed to this increase. The decrease of P sorption capacity can also be responsible for it. The CSMP addition increased enzyme extractable P in the soil nearly 7-fold and mitigated the limitations of carbon (C) and P for soil microorganisms (indicated by the enzyme stoichiometry and ecoenzyme vector analysis), suggesting that microbial turnover processes also contribute to P mobilization in amended acidic soil. These findings indicate that the P mobilization in CSMP amended acidic soil not only attributed to both decreasing P sorption capacity and dissolving phosphate precipitation, but also to the increase of the microbial turnover of the organophosphorus pool.

Colloid-facilitated phosphorus (P) migration plays an important role in P loss from farmland to adjacent water bodies. However, the dynamics of colloidal P (Pcoll) release as influenced by irrigation in alkaline calcareous soil remains a knowledge gap. The present study, monitored the dynamic change of Pcoll under different water management strategies: 1) control, 2) flooding, and 3) alternating flooding and drying cycles. Soil water-dispersible colloids (0.6 nm-1 µm) were extracted by combining filtration and ultrafiltration methods. The contents of P, cation and organic carbon in the water-dispersible colloids were determined and the stability and mineral composition of colloidal fractions were characterized. The results showed that Pcoll ranged from 16.5 to 25.5 mg kg-1 and represented 42.8%-64.9% of the water-extracted P in the control. Flooding significantly decreased the Pcoll content by 16.0%-62.1% (mean 32.7%) and it may be attributed to the dissolution of colloidal iron (Fe) bound P. The alternating flooding and drying treatment significantly reduced the Pcoll content by 11.6%-88.0% (mean 67.6%). The Pcoll content of the flooding event was always greater than the Pcoll content of the drying event during flooding and drying cycles. Redundancy analysis and random forest modeling showed that the colloidal calcium (Ca) and ionic strength in soil solutions had negative correlations with the Pcoll content, and pH, ionic strength and truly dissolved P were the critical factors affecting Pcoll. Drying of the flooded soil led to the decrease of pH and the increase of ionic strength, colloidal Ca content and positive charges of colloid surfaces, which promoted colloid aggregation and enhanced soil P sorption capacity. This restricted the loss potential of Pcoll. In summary, controlled flooding and drainage when managed correctly have a role to play in mitigating Pcoll loss from P-enriched calcareous soils.

As a large number of organic compounds possessing two isoprene units, monoterpenes and monoterpenoids play important roles in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, and food industries. In nature, monoterpenes are constructed from geranyl pyrophosphate (C10) via various transformations. Herein, the bulk C5 chemical-isoprene, is used for the creation of various monoterpenoids via a nucleophilic aromatization of monoterpenes under cascade catalysis of nickel and iodine. Drugs and oil mixtures from conifer and lemon can be convergently transformed to the desired monoterpenoid. Preliminary mechanistic studies are conducted to get insights about reaction pathway. Two types of cyclic monoterpenes can be respectively introduced onto two similar heterocycles via orthogonal C-H functionalization. And various hybrid terpenyl indoles are programmatically assembled from abundant C5 or C10 blocks. This work not only contributes a high chemo-, regio-, and redox-selective transformation of isoprene, but also provides a complementary approach for the creation of unnatural monoterpenoids.

Chemotherapy remains as the first-choice treatment option for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, the limited tumor penetration and low cellular internalization efficiency of current nanocarrier-based systems impede the access of anticancer drugs to TNBC with dense stroma and thereby greatly restricts clinical therapeutic efficacy, especially for TNBC bone metastasis. In this work, biomimetic head/hollow tail nanorobots were designed through a site-selective superassembly strategy. We show that nanorobots enable efficient remodeling of the dense tumor stromal microenvironments (TSM) for deep tumor penetration. Furthermore, the self-movement ability and spiky head markedly promote interfacial cellular uptake efficacy, transvascular extravasation, and intratumoral penetration. These nanorobots, which integrate deep tumor penetration, active cellular internalization, near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive release, and photothermal therapy capacities into a single nanodevice efficiently suppress tumor growth in a bone metastasis female mouse model of TNBC and also demonstrate potent antitumor efficacy in three different subcutaneous tumor models.

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis caused by chronic liver injury, eventually develops into liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, there are no effective drugs to relieve liver fibrosis due to the lack of molecular pathogenesis characteristics. Former research demonstrates that the hepatic immune microenvironment plays a key role in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, thus macrophages are important immune cells in the liver. Our previous study has found that IDO1 plays an important role in the liver immune microenvironment. CRG is a gallic acid tannin found in medicinal plants of many ethnicities that protects against inflammation, tumors and chronic liver disease. However, the mechanism of by which CRG mediates the interaction of IDO1 with macrophages during hepatic immune maturation is not clear. PURPOSE: To investigate the regulatory mechanism of CRG in liver fibrosis and the intrinsic relationship between IDO1 and macrophage differentiation. METHODS: Zebrafish, RAW264.7 cells and mice were used in the study. IDO1 overexpression and knockdown cell lines were constructed using lentiviral techniques. RESULTS: We discovered that CRG remarkably reduced the AST and ALT serum levels. Histological examination revealed that CRG ameliorates CCL4-induced liver fibrosis and depressed the expression of α-SMA, Lamimin, Collagen-Ι and fibronectin. Besides, we found that CRG promoted increased MerTK expression on partly macrophages. Interestingly, in vitro, we found that CRG suppressed IDO1 expression and regulated macrophage differentiation by upregulating CD86, CD80 and iNOS, while downregulating CD206, CD163, IL-4 and IL-10 expression. Additionally, we found that CRG could inhibit hepatic stellate cell activation by direct or indirect action. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that CRG alleviates liver fibrosis by mediating IDO1-mediated M2 macrophage repolarization.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Wenyang Zhenshuai Granules(WYZSG) on autophagy and apoptosis of myocardial cells in rats with sepsis via regulating the expression of microRNA-132-3p(miR-132-3p)/uncoupling protein 2(UCP2). Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into modeling group(n=50) and sham operation group(n=10). The sepsis rat model was constructed by cecal ligation and perforation in the modeling group. The successfully modeled rats were randomly divided into WYZSG low-, medium-and high-dose groups, model group and positive control group. Rats in the sham operation group underwent opening and cecum division but without perforation and ligation. Hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining was used to observe the pathological changes of rat myocardial tissue. Myocardial cell apoptosis was detected by TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling(TUNEL) assay. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR) was performed to detect the expression of miR-132-3p and the mRNA expressions of UCP2, microtubule-associated protein light chain 3(LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ), Beclin-1 and caspase-3 in rat myocardial tissue. The protein expressions of UCP2, LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ, Beclin-1 and caspase-3 in myocardial tissue were detected by Western blot. Dual luciferase reporter assay was used to verify the regulatory relationship between miR-132-3p and UCP2. The myocardial fibers of sepsis model rats were disordered, and there were obvious inflammatory cell infiltration as well as myocardial cell edema and necrosis. With the increase of the WYZSG dose, the histopathological changes of myocardium were improved to varying degrees. Compared with the conditions in the sham operation group, the survival rate and left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) of rats in the model group, positive control group and WYZSG low-, medium-and high-dose groups were decreased, and the myocardial injury score and apoptosis rate were increased. Compared with the model group, the positive control group and WYZSG low-, medium-and high-dose groups had elevated survival rate and LVEF, and lowered myocardial injury score and apoptosis rate. The expression of miR-132-3p and the mRNA and protein expressions of UCP2 in myocardial tissue in the model group, positive control group and WYZSG low-, medium-and high-dose groups were lower, while the mRNA and protein expressions of LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ, Beclin-1 and caspase-3 were higher than those in the sham operation group. Compared with model group, the positive control group and the WYZSG low-, medium-and high-dose groups had an up-regulation in the expression of miR-132-3p and the mRNA and protein expressions of UCP2, while a down-regulation in the mRNA and protein expressions of LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ, Beclin-1 and caspase-3. WYZSG inhibited excessive autophagy and apoptosis of myocardial cells in septic rats and improved myocardial injury, possibly by regulating the expression of miR-132-3p/UCP2.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and immune dysfunction with classically activated macrophages(M1) infiltration are important mechanisms in the progression of atherosclerosis (AS). Dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1)-dependent mitochondrial fission is a novel target for alleviating inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effects of DRP1 inhibitor Mdivi-1 on AS. METHODS: ApoE-/- mice were fed with a high-fat diet supplemented with or without Mdivi-1. RAW264.7 cells were stimulated by ox-LDL, pretreated with or without MCC950, Mito-TEMPO, or Mdivi-1. The burden of plaques and foam cell formation were determined using ORO staining. The blood lipid profles and inflammatory cytokines in serum were detected by commercial kits and ELISA, respectively. The mRNA expression of macrophage polarization markers, activation of NLRP3 and the phosphorylation state of DRP1 were detected. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mito-ROS), mitochondrial staining, ATP level and mitochondrial membrane potential were detected by mito-SOX, MitoTracker, ATP determination kit and JC-1 staining, respectively. RESULTS: In vivo, Mdivi-1 reduced the plaque areas, M1 polarization, NLRP3 activation and DRP1 phosphorylation at Ser616. In vitro, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) triggered M1 polarization, NLRP3 activation and abnormal accumulation of mito-ROS. MCC950 and Mito-TEMPO suppressed M1 polarization mediated foam cell formation. Mito-TEMPO significantly inhibited NLRP3 activation. In addition, Mdivi-1 reduced foam cells by inhibiting M1 polarization. The possible mechanisms responsible for the anti-atherosclerotic effects of Mdivi-1 on reducing M1 polarization were associated with suppressing mito-ROS/NLRP3 pathway by inhibiting DRP1 mediated mitochondrial fission. In vitro, similar results were observed by DRP1 knockdown. CONCLUSION: Inhibition of DRP1-dependent mitochondrial fission by Mdivi-1 alleviated atherogenesis via suppressing mito-ROS/NLRP3-mediated M1 polarization, indicating DRP1-dependent mitochondrial fission as a potential therapeutic target for AS.

AIMS: To explore the relationship between vitamin D and obesity and abdominal obesity in women with infertility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We screened the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2016. A total of 201 infertile women between the ages of 20 and 40 years were included in our study. To estimate the independent association of vitamin D with obesity and abdominal obesity, we used weighted multivariate logistic regression models and cubic spline analyses. RESULTS: Among infertile women in the NHANES 2013-2016 database, serum vitamin D levels were significantly and negatively associated with body mass index (ß= -0.96, 95% CI: -1.40, -0.51, p < 0.001)and waist circumference (ß= -0.40, 95% CI: -0.59, -0.22, p < 0.001), respectively. After multivariable adjustment, lower vitamin D levels were found to be associated with a higher prevalence of obesity (OR: 8.290, 95% CI: 2.451-28.039, p for trend = 0.001) and abdominal obesity (OR: 4.820, 95%CI: 1.351-17.194, p for trend =0.037). Spline regression showed linearity of the associations between vitamin D and obesity/abdominal obesity (p for nonlinearity > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that a decreased vitamin D might correspond to a higher prevalence of obesity in infertile women, which reminded us to pay more attention to the supplement of vitamin D in obese infertile women.

Metal oxide modified biochars are increasingly being used for intensive agricultural soil remediation, but there has been limited research on their effects on soil phosphorus transformation, soil enzyme activity, microbe community and plant growth. Two highly-performance metal oxides biochars (FeAl-biochar and MgAl-biochar) were investigated for their effects on soil phosphorus availability, fractions, enzyme activity, microbe community and plant growth in two typical intensive fertile agricultural soils. Adding raw biochar to acidic soil increased NH4Cl-P content, while metal oxide biochar reduced NH4Cl-P content by binding to phosphorus. Original biochar slightly reduced Al-P content in lateritic red soil, while metal oxide biochar increased it. LBC and FBC significantly reduced Ca2-P and Ca8-P properties while improving Al-P and Fe-P, respectively. Inorganic phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria increased in abundance with biochar amendment in both soil types, and biochar addition affected soil pH and phosphorus fractions, leading to changes in bacterial growth and community structure. Biochar's microporous structure allowed it to adsorb phosphorus and aluminum ions, making them more available for plants and reducing leaching. In calcareous soils, biochar additions may dominantly increase the Ca (hydro)oxides bounded P or soluble P instead of Fe-P or Al-P through biotic pathways, favoring plant growth. The recommendations for using metal oxides biochar for fertile soil management include using LBC biochar for optimal performance in both P leaching reduction and plant growth promotion, with the mechanisms differing depending on soil type. This research highlights the potential of metal oxide modified biochars for improving soil fertility and reducing phosphorus leaching, with specific recommendations for their use in different soil types.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Given the adverse effects of the current principal treatments, there is still a great need for effective cures for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune-mediated disease. Toddalia asiatica (L.) Lam is a traditional medicinal herb that can be used for RA treatment because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the possible effects of Toddalia asiatica extract (TAE) on intestinal immunity and the intestinal bacterial flora in a rat model of RA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-arthritis effect of TAE was evaluated in arthritis rats induced by complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA). Arthritis index (AI) scores, systemic inflammation scores, histopathologic changes in the colon and ankle were detected by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Western blot analysis was performed to assess the protein expression of IL-17A, RORC, IL-1ß, IL-6, FOXP3, IL-10 in the colon. RT-PCR was performed to assess the expression of the colon's mRNA. Finally, changes to the gut microbiome by sequencing 16S rDNA. Microbial function prediction was performed using PICRUSt with the KEGG databases and correlation analysis was carried out by computing Spearman's rank correlations. RESULTS: demonstrated that TAE administration at a dose of 3 g/kg dramatically decreased AI scores, systemic inflammation scores, and histopathologic lesions of the ankle and colon in AIA rats. TAE was found to significantly reduce the expression levels of Th17-related proteins and mRNAs (IL-17A, RORC, IL-1ß and IL-6) in the colon, while increasing the expression levels of Treg-related proteins and mRNA (IL-10 and FOXP3), which helped restore the balance of Th17/Treg immune cells in the colon. Meanwhile, TAE was also found to be capable of remodeling the gut microbiota in AIA rats. Depleting RA-associated genera and thereby increasing α-diversity enriched the gut microbiota's diversity and shifted the community composition dramatically, leading to the increase of Firmicutes_unclassified, Ruminococcaceae_unclassified, Muribaculum, Subdoligranulum, Lachnospira, Marvinbryantia, and the reduction of RA-related bacteria Ligilactobacillus, Streptococcus and Eubacterium-eligens-group. Furthermore, PICRUSt analysis revealed that metabolic pathways were associated with TAE treatment, with metabolic pathways dominating. Among them, metabolic pathways were predominant. Correlation studies showed that a total of 9 microorganisms, including Ligilactobacillus, Eubacterium-eligens-group and Subdoligranulum, were significantly associated with Th17/Treg expression. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that TAE is a low-toxicity poly alkaline drug that can rapidly and effectively improve joint symptoms in RA rats and increases beneficial intestinal bacteria and decreases harmful ones, which is associated with modulating Th17/Treg interactions in intestinal T cells and reversing microbial disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the brain effect mechanism and the correlation between brain functional imaging and cognitive function in treatment of depressive disorder (DD) with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) based on the resting-state functional magenetic reasonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Thirty-two DD patients were included in a depression group and 32 subjects of healthy condition were enrolled in a normal group. In the depression group, the taVNS was applied to bilateral Xin (CO15) and Shen (CO10), at disperse-dense wave, 4 Hz/20 Hz in frequency and current intensity ≤20 mA depending on patient's tolerance, 30 min each time, twice daily. The duration of treatment consisted of 8 weeks. The patients of two groups were undertaken rs-fMRI scanning. The scores of Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA) and Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST) were observed in the normal group at baseline and the depression group before and after treatment separately. The differential brain regions were observed before and after treatment in the two groups and the value of degree centrality (DC) of fMRI was obtained. Their correlation was analyzed in terms of HAMD, HAMA and WCST scores. RESULTS: The scores of HAMD and HAMA in the depression group were all higher than those in the normal group (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of HAMD and HAMA were lower than those before treatment in the depression group; the scores of total responses, response errors and perseverative errors of WCST were all lower than those before treatment (P<0.05). The brain regions with significant differences included the left inferior temporal gyrus, the left cerebellar peduncles region 1, the left insula, the right putamen, the bilateral supplementary motor area and the right middle frontal gyrus. After treatment, the value of DC in left supplementary motor area was negatively correlated to HAMD and HAMA scores respectively (r=-0.324, P=0.012; r=-0.310, P=0.015); the value of DC in left cerebellar peduncles region 1 was negatively correlated to the total responses of WCST (r=-0.322, P=0.013), and the left insula was positively correlated to the total responses of WCST (r=0.271, P=0.036). CONCLUSION: The taVNS can modulate the intensity of the functional activities of some brain regions so as to relieve depressive symptoms and improve cognitive function.

Globally, red mud is a solid waste from the aluminum industry, which is rich in iron oxides. It is an effective soil amendment in agriculture that protects connected waters from legacy diffuse phosphorus (P) soil losses. However, other management practices such as flooding and drying and/or organic carbon inputs could potentially alter P fixation in these red mud-amended soils thereby releasing P to waters. The present study was designed and conducted to monitor the mobilization of P in a red mud-amended acidic soil subjected to periodic flooding-drying, straw incorporation, and a mix of both management practices. Sequential extraction and K edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (k-XANES) were employed to distinguish P fractions/species and the Langmuir model was fitted to evaluate soil P sorption capacity. The content of labile P indicated by CaCl2-P was increased significantly by 101% and 28.7% in the straw incorporation and periodic flooding-drying treatments, while it decreased significantly by 22.3% in the combined periodic flooding-drying with straw incorporation treatment, compared with Control. The inherent phosphate contained in sorghum straw, and the enhanced iron (Fe) reduction and dissolution of Calcium (Ca)-bound P induced by straw addition contributed to mobilization of P in the straw incorporation treatment. In contrast, the increased poorly crystalline Al/Fe oxides-bound P and occluded Fe-bound P fraction in the combined periodic flooding-drying with straw incorporation treatment explains the decrease in CaCl2-P. Furthermore, the increased soil P sorption capacity and the decreased P desorption rate were also responsible for the reduced P loss risk in the treatment. The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated that organically complexed Fe and Fe-bound P were directly affecting P mobilization in the amended soil. Overall, the present study shows that appropriate flooding-drying events coupled with straw incorporation could be a mitigation practice for stabilizing P in red mud-amended soil. However, before it can be applied on a wide scale, multi-point and field trials should be carried out to further evaluate actual environmental implications.

Addition of organic amendments, such as manure and straw, to arable fields as a partial substitute for mineral phosphorus (P), are a sustainable practice in high-efficiency agricultural production. Different organic inputs may induce varied soil organic carbon (OC) stability and phoD harboring microbes, subsequently regulate P behavior, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. A 11-year field experiment examined P forms by 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), OC chemical composition by 13C NMR, and biologically-based P availability methods, phoD bacterial communities, and their co-occurrence in soils amended with chemical P fertilizer (CF), chemical P partly substituted by organic amendments including pig manure (CM), a mixture of pig manure and corn straw (CMS), and corn straw (CS), with equal P input in all treatments. Organic amendments significantly increased soil labile Pi (CaCl2-P, citrate-P, 2.91-3.26 and 1.16-1.32 times higher than CF) and Po (enzyme-P, diesters, 4.08-7.47 and 1.71-2.14 times higher than CF) contents and phosphatase activities, while significantly decreased aromaticity (AI) and recalcitrance indexes (RI) of soil C, compared with CF. The keystone genera in manured soils (Alienimomas and Streptomyces) and straw-applied soils (Janthinobacterium and Caulobacter) were significantly correlated with soil enzyme-P, microbial biomass P (MBP), diesters, and citrate-P. Soil AI and RI were significantly correlated with the phoD keystone and soil P species. It suggested that the keystone was impacted by soil OC stability and play a role in regulating P redistribution in amended soils. This study highlights how manure and straw incorporation altered soil OC stability, shaped the phoD harboring community, and enhanced soil P biological processes promoted by the keystone taxa. The partial substitution of mineral P by mixture of manure and straw is effectively promote soil P availability and beneficial for environmental sustainability.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) treatment by comparing uterine artery chemotherapy embolization (UACE) combined with dilation and curettage (D&C) with or without ultrasound guidance. METHODS: CSP patients treated with UACE combined with D&C from January 2013 to December 2020 at Shuguang Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were included in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into groups A and B according to whether D&C was guided by ultrasound. RESULTS: Forty-eight patients with CSP diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasound were included in this study, whose gestational age was <8 weeks. There were no significant differences in the basic clinical characteristics of the two groups. The success rates of the 2 groups were no significant difference, 100% (27/27) in group A and 85.7% (18/21) in group B. The maximal intraoperative blood loss of group A was 100 mL and that of group B was 150 mL. There was no uterine perforation during the operation. Ultrasound guidance can shorten the D&C operation time, reduce intraoperative bleeding during D&C, and decrease the residual rate of trophoblastic tissue after D&C. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound guidance can improve the safety and efficiency of UACE combined with D&C in the treatment of CSP and reduce its complications. We believe it is an optimal treatment for CSP patients who do not plan to have children in the future.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) may lead to many adverse effects on women and their offspring. METHOD: 24,429 pregnant women were enrolled during early pregnancy from January 2018 to December 2021. The self-reported intake of folic acid supplements was assessed via a questionnaire. Oral glucose tolerance tests were used for the diagnosis of GDM. The association between intake or not, dose, and duration of folic acid and GDM risk was assessed. RESULTS: 6396 (26.18%) women were diagnosed with GDM. In the univariate models, folic acid was found to be correlated with total GDM risk (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70~0.95, p = 0.009). After adjusting for potential confounders, the association with total GDM risk was not significant, but the association of folic acid with 2-h PBG diagnosed GDM risk was consistently significant (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.63~0.90, p = 0.002). No significant association between the dose and duration of folic acid supplementation and GDM risk was observed in the analyses. CONCLUSION: Folic acid supplementation might be a protective factor for the risk of GDM caused by the high level of postprandial blood glucose, but the dose or duration-related association between folic acid supplementation and GDM risk is not clear.
