INTRODUCTION: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) has an increasing prevalence worldwide, accounting for at least 20%-40% of all diagnoses of dementia. The decline in cognitive function seriously impairs patients' activities of daily living and social participation and reduces their quality of life. However, there is still a lack of advanced, definitive rehabilitation programmes for VCI. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are recognised treatments for improving cognitive impairment. The former can restore oxygen supply in the brain by increasing oxygen partial pressure in brain tissue, while the latter can enhance neuronal excitability and promote synaptic plasticity. However, no studies have explored the effect of HBO combined with rTMS on VCI. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is designed as a single-centre, assessor-blind, randomised controlled clinical trial with four parallel arms. A total of 72 participants will be recruited and randomly assigned to the control group, HBOT group, rTMS group and HBOT combined with rTMS group at a ratio of 1:1:1:1. All enrolled participants will receive conventional treatment. The entire intervention period is 4 weeks, with a 3-week follow-up. Outcomes will be measured at baseline (T0), after a 4-week intervention (T1) and after an additional 3-week follow-up period (T2). The primary endpoint is the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score. The secondary endpoints are Mini-Mental State Examination score, Modified Barthel Index score, latency and amplitude of P300, cerebral cortical oxygenated haemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxygenated haemoglobin (HbR) concentrations as measured by task-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval was obtained from the West China Hospital Clinical Trials and Biomedical Ethics Committee of Sichuan University (ethics reference: 2022 (1972)). The findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated through scientific conferences and seminars. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2300068242.

Heavy metal pollution seriously threatens the environment and human health. The biosorption of heavy metals has attracted worldwide attention due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. It is significant to develop biosorbents with excellent adsorption performance. Sphingopyxis is widely used in the removal of various organic pollutants, but its potential application in heavy metal adsorption has been largely overlooked. This study investigates the biosorption of U(VI) onto live and dead cells of a Sphingopyxis strain YF1. The effects of pH, contact time and initial ion concentration on U(VI) adsorption investigated, and kinetic and isothermal models were used to fit the adsorption results. The results show that under pH 3-6, the adsorption of U(VI) by YF1 live cells increased with the increase of the pH. Both the pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order models can satisfactorily interpret the adsorption by live and dead cells. Three isothermal adsorption models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips) were used to fit the adsorption process. The adsorption of uranium by live and dead cells was best fitted by the Sips model. The maximal adsorption capacities of U(VI) by live and dead cells were 140.7 mg g-1 and 205.7 mg g-1, respectively. The mechanisms of U(VI) adsorption by Sphingopyxis sp. YF1 were revealed. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) show that U(VI) was deposited on the surface of the bacterial cells. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows that amine, hydroxyl, alkyl, amide I, amide II, phosphate, carboxylates and carboxylic acids were the major functional groups that are involved in U(VI) adsorption by live and dead cells. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests that the main functional groups of live cells involved in adsorption were O = C-O, C-OH/C-O-C and N-C = O. This study indicates Sphingopyxis sp. YF1 is a high-efficiency U(VI)-adsorbing strain, promising to remove U(VI) from aquatic environment.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the protective mechanisms of melatonin in an in vitro model of sepsis-induced hepatocyte injury, specifically focusing on mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis. Methods: In this study, we utilized lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated AML12 cells to establish an in vitro model of sepsis-induced hepatocyte injury. The effects of melatonin pretreatment were examined through various analyses, including assessments of oxidative stress, inflammation, mitophagy, mitochondrial biogenesis, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels. Results: The results revealed that LPS-treated AML12 cells exhibited elevated levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6 protein, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lipid peroxidation, specifically malondialdehyde (MDA). Moreover, the levels of key markers associated with mitophagy, including PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1), parkin, and LC3, were significantly increased (P < .05). Similarly, markers of mitochondrial biogenesis, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1), and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), were also significantly increased (P < .05). Conversely, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and ATP levels were significantly decreased in LPS-treated AML12 cells compared to the control group (P < .05). However, melatonin pretreatment led to a significant decrease in TNF-α and IL-6 protein levels, intracellular ROS, and MDA levels (P < .05), along with a significant increase in SOD activity, ATP levels, and markers of mitophagy and mitochondrial. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that melatonin plays a role in regulating mitochondrial quality control in sepsis-induced hepatocytes. It achieves this result by promoting mitophagy and inducing mitochondrial biogenesis, thereby selectively eliminating dysfunctional mitochondria.

Ischemic stroke (IS) has become the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the prevention of IS should be given high priority. Recent studies have indicated that hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBO-PC) may be a protective nonpharmacological method, but its underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study comprehensively reviewed the pathophysiology of IS and revealed the underlying mechanism of HBO-PC in protection against IS. The preventive effects of HBO-PC against IS may include inducing antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-apoptosis capacity; activating autophagy and immune responses; upregulating heat shock proteins, hypoxia-inducible factor-1, and erythropoietin; and exerting protective effects upon the blood-brain barrier. In addition, HBO-PC may be considered a safe and effective method to prevent IS in combination with stem cell therapy. Although the benefits of HBO-PC on IS have been widely observed in recent research, the implementation of this technique is still controversial due to regimen differences. Transferring the results to clinical application needs to be taken carefully, and screening for the optimal regimen would be a daunting task. In addition, whether we should prescribe an individualized preconditioning regimen to each stroke patient needs further exploration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for fibromyalgia (FM). DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, VIP (China Science and Technology Journal Database), CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) and WanFang database were searched from from inception to 22 October 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included clinical trials (randomised controlled and non-randomised controlled trials) of HBOT for FM. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data and evaluated the quality of the included studies, with disagreements resolved by a third researcher. The Cochrane Collaboration checklists and the Methodological Index for Non-randomised Studies were used to assess the risk of bias. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan V.5.4.1 software. Random effect models were used for meta-analysis. RESULTS: Nine studies were included in this review, with a total of 288 patients. For pain assessment, we combined the results of the Visual Analogue Scale and Widespread Pain Index. The results showed that HBOT could relieve the pain of FM patients compared with the control intervention (standardised mean difference=-1.56, 95% CI (-2.18 to -0.93), p<0.001, I 2=51%). Most included studies reported that HBOT ameliorated tender points, fatigue, multidimensional function, patient global and sleep disturbance in FM. Adverse events occurred in 44 of 185 patients (23.8%). Twelve patients (6.5%) withdrew because of adverse reactions. No serious adverse events or complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS: HBOT might have a positive effect in improving pain, tender points, fatigue, multidimensional function, patient global and sleep disturbance in FM, with reversible side effects. Low pressure (less than 2.0 atmospheric absolute) may be beneficial to reduce adverse events in FM. Further studies should be carried out to evaluate the optimal protocol of HBOT in FM. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Stokes) F.A. Barkley (RVS) is an economic tree species and widely distributed in East Asia. Wood parts and raw lacquers of RVS have been used in coatings, herbal medicines or food supplements, and the leaves, flowers, roots, and fruits of RVS are also widely used in medicine traditionally. Lacquer seed oil (LSO) has potential health benefits and has not previously been evaluated for safety. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present study was to investigate the toxicological potential of LSO by acute and subchronic toxicity tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The characterization of fatty acids of the LSO was carried out by gas chromatography. In the acute toxicity study, LSO was administered at single doses of 5000 or 10000 mg/kg by oral gavage. The subchronic toxicity study was conducted by daily oral administration of LSO at doses of 1250, 2500 and 5000 mg/kg/day for 30 consecutive days. The animals were evaluated for clinical observations, body weight, organ weight, feed consumption, biochemical and hematological parameters, and liver, lung, and kidney histology. RESULTS: There were no mortality and toxic changes were observed in acute toxicity study. The results of subchronic toxicity showed no toxicologically significant changes in clinical observations, body weight, organ weight, biochemical or hematological parameters. Histopathologic results indicated slight hepatic steatosis and inflammatory infiltration in the rats of 5000 mg/kg/day LSO treated group. However, the histopathologic observation was not confirmed by hepatic biochemical analysis. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that the LD50 of LSO is over 10000 mg/kg and LSO is non-toxic for SD rats in acute toxicity study. The no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of LSO in rats is considered to be 5000 mg/kg/day, and liver is the potential target organ of LSO for 30-day subchronic toxicity study.

Objective: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disease that includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Existing literature suggests that HBOT may be an effective therapy for IBD, but a quantitative analysis is lacking. This study aims to estimate the adjunctive role of HBOT in treating IBD and lowering its recurrence rate. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang databases were systematically searched by two reviewers independently. Meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager (RevMan, version 5.3). A random-effects model was applied due to the heterogeneity between studies. Results: Twenty-nine out of the initially identified 606 articles were covered in this review, with a total of 2151 patients (2071 for UC and 80 for CD). No randomized data of HBOT for CD were included. Among UC patients, usual care plus HBOT were more likely to achieve a clinical response than usual care alone (risk ratio [RR], 1.24; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.17 to 1.31; P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that the number of HBOT sessions had no statistically significant effect on overall efficacy (P > 0.05). The pooled data showed a lower recurrence rate in the usual care plus HBOT group (RR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.53; P < 0.001). The standardized mean difference in the serum tumor necrosis factor level between HBOT and non-HBOT groups was -2.13 (95% CI, -3.09 to -1.18; P < 0.001). No severe adverse events of HBOT were observed. Conclusions: HBOT might be an effective and safe adjunctive treatment for IBD. Further studies are required to investigate the optimal protocol of HBOT in IBD treatment.

Purpose: Berberine (BBR), an alkaloid produced by a traditional Chinese plant, was recently attributed multiple effects on lipometabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis. Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is highly associated with these pathologic changes. Thus, we aimed to examine the potential therapeutic effect of BBR in an in vitro model of TAO. Methods: Orbital fibroblasts (OFs) obtained from control donors (n = 6) or patients with TAO (n = 6) were cultured. The CCK-8 assay was conducted for assessing the optimal concentration range. Oil Red O staining, Western blotting, and quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) were conducted to assess adipogenesis in OFs. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to screen the key pathways of the antiadipogenic effect mediated by BBR. Along with incremental concentrations of BBR, IL-1ß-induced expression of proinflammatory molecules was determined by ELISA and qRT-PCR. In addition, TGF-ß-induced hyaluronan (HA) production and fibrosis were evaluated by ELISA, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting. Results: TAO-OFs, but not control fibroblasts (CON-OFs), were readily differentiated into adipocytes with the commercial medium. Intracellular lipid accumulation was dose-dependently decreased by BBR, and adipogenic markers were also downregulated. Moreover, the PPARγ and AMPK pathways were screened out by RNA-seq and their downstream effectors were suppressed by BBR. Besides, BBR attenuated IL-1ß-induced expression of proinflammatory molecules in both TAO-OFs and CON-OFs by blocking nuclear factor-κB signaling. BBR's inhibitory effect on TGF-ß-mediated tissue remodeling was also confirmed in OFs. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate BBR has outstanding capabilities of controlling adipogenesis, inflammation, HA production, and fibrosis in OFs, highlighting its potential therapeutic role in TAO management.

By searching the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture and moxibustion from CNKI since its inception date to december 31 of 2019, the development status and hot trend of RCTs of acupuncture and moxibustion in China were summarized. The CiteSpace and VOSviewer software were used to perform keyword co-occurrence analysis, clustering analysis, time-zone analysis and citation-burst analysis, and visual map was drawn. As a result, a total of 60 995 articles were included, which were published in 1027 academic journals with 1787 keywords. The publication date was from 1975 to 2019. During the past 45 years, the publications of RCTs on acupuncture and moxibustion had shown an overall growth trend with characteristics of the times. The RCTs of manual acupuncture ranked the top, and its proportion of publications every 5 years was stable in the past 30 years. Since 1994, the hot words such as electroacupuncture, warming needling, auricular point sticking and various acupoint therapies had emerged; meanwhile, the spectrum of diseases had broadened, and an evolutionary trend corresponding to therapies and disease systems had been formed. In recent decade, the RCTs using moxibustion therapy have increased significantly, and the hot words such as "sub-health" "winter diseases being treated in summer" and "acupoint application/ moxibustion during the dog days" had indicated that acupuncture clinical research was further inclined to the field of chronic disease prevention and health services, which was in line with social development and the needs of the times.

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a chronic inflammatory breast condition that is characterized by granulomatous inflammation. GLM remains a refractory disease due to its failure to respond to routine anti-inflammatory therapies and its high recurrence rate. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the application of local heat therapy in GLM as a potential therapeutic strategy. The results revealed that the application of local heat therapy was associated with a shortened remission time for GLM, while the remission and recurrence rates were similar to those of existing therapies. The median first remission time following local heat therapy was significantly decreased compared with that following corticosteroid therapy (5.30 months vs. 11.27 months; P<0.05). The remission rates were not significantly different between the local heat therapy (76.9%), extensive excision (90.4%) and the corticosteroid therapy (85.7%) groups (P>0.05). In addition, the recurrence rates were not statistically different between the groups (local heat therapy, 8.3%; extensive excision, 10%; and corticosteroid therapy, 10%; P>0.05). The local heat therapy showed mild adverse effects and shortened healing times compared to the other therapies; however, further confirmation is required.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Compound Danshen Injection combined with Western medicine in the treatment of vascular dementia. Databases of Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMbase, CNKI, SinoMed, VIP, Wanfang Data were electronically retrieved for collecting randomized controlled trial(RCT)about vascular dementia treated with Western medicine alone or combined with Compound Danshen Injection from the year of database establishment to January 2020. Two researchers independently screened out li-teratures, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias for inclusion in the study. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software. A total of 5 RCTs were included, involving 588 patients, with 299 in treatment group and 289 in control group. Meta-analysis results showed that compared with Western medicine alone, Compound Danshen Injection combined with Western medicine was better in the effective rate(RR=1.23,95%CI[1.14,1.33],P<0.000 01), MMSE score(MD=3.54,95%CI[3.01,4.06],P<0.000 01), ADL score(MD=11.49,95%CI[8.05,14.93],P<0.000 01), the level of CRP(MD=-0.72,95%CI[-1.25,-0.20],P=0.007) and the level of IL-6(MD=-7.64,95%CI[-9.65,-5.63],P<0.000 01). Adverse reactions mainly included rash and skin prick, which did not affect the treatment effect. Based on the findings, the combination of Compound Danshen Injection in the treatment of vascular dementia could improve the effective rates, relieve the mental state damage and improve the daily living ability, with mild adverse reactions and a low incidence. However, due to the low quality of the included literatures, high-quality and large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed for further verification.

BACKGROUND: Nuezhenide (NZD), an iridoid glycoside isolated from Ilex pubescens Hook. & Arn. var. kwangsiensis Hand.-Mazz., used as a traditional Chinese medicine for clearing away heat and toxic materials, displays a variety of biological activities such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, and other life-protecting activities. However, a few studies involving anti-inflammatory activity and the mechanism of NZD have also been reported. In the present study, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects of NZD are illustrated. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test the hypothesis that NZD suppresses LPS-induced inflammation by targeting the NF-κB pathway in RAW264.7 cells. METHODS: LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were employed to detect the effect of NZD on the release of cytokines by ELISA. Protein expression levels of related molecular markers were quantitated by western blot analysis. The levels of ROS, NO, and Ca2+ were detected by flow cytometry. The changes in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were observed and verified by fluorescence microscopy. Using immunofluorescence assay, the translocation of NF-κB/p65 from the cytoplasm into the nucleus was determined by confocal microscopy. RESULTS: NZD exhibited anti-inflammatory activity and reduced the release of inflammatory cytokines such as nitrite, TNF-α, and IL-6. NZD suppressed the expression of the phosphorylated proteins like IKKα/ß, IκBα, and p65. Besides, the flow cytometry results indicated that NZD inhibited the levels of ROS, NO, and Ca2+ in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. JC-1 assay data showed that NZD reversed LPS-induced MMP loss. Furthermore, NZD suppressed LPS-induced NF-B/p65 translocation from the cytoplasm into the nucleus. CONCLUSION: NZD exhibits anti-inflammatory effects through the NF-κB pathway on RAW264.7 cells.

BACKGROUND: Alstonia scholaris is a folk medicine used to treat cough, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in China. Total alkaloids (TA) from A. scholaris exhibit anti-inflammatory properties in acute respiratory disease, which suggests their possible anti-inflammatory effect on influenza virus infection. PURPOSE: To assess the clinical use of TA by demonstrating their anti-influenza and anti-inflammatory effects and the possible mechanism underlying the effect of TA on influenza A virus (IAV) infection in vitro and to reveal the inhibitory effect of TA on lung immunopathology caused by IAV infection. METHODS: Antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities were assessed in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) and A549 cells and U937-derived macrophages infected with influenza A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) virus. Proinflammatory cytokine levels were measured by real-time quantitative PCR and Bio-Plex assays. The activation of innate immune signaling induced by H1N1 virus in the absence or presence of TA was detected in A549 cells by Western blot. Furthermore, mice were infected intranasally with H1N1 virus and treated with TA (50, 25 and 12.5 mg/kg/d) or oseltamivir (60 mg/kg/d) for 5 days in vivo. The survival rates and body weight were recorded, and the viral titer, proinflammatory cytokine levels, innate immune cell populations and histopathological changes in the lungs were analyzed. RESULTS: TA significantly inhibited viral replication in A549 cells and U937-derived macrophages and markedly reduced cytokine and chemokine production at the mRNA and protein levels. Furthermore, TA blocked the activation of pattern recognition receptor (PRR)- and IFN-activated signal transduction in A549 cells. Critically, TA also increased the survival rate, reduced the viral titer, suppressed proinflammatory cytokine production and innate immune cell infiltration and improved lung histopathology in a lethal PR8 mouse model. CONCLUSION: TA exhibits anti-viral and anti-inflammatory effects against IAV infection by interfering with PRR- and IFN-activated signal transduction.

There has been a recent increase in research interest regarding the development of wound dressings containing bioactive compounds capable of improving outcomes for complex healing needs. In the present study, we describe the generation of bromelain immobilized eletrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) fibers (BrPDA-PCL fibers) using the dopamine-assisted co-deposition strategy. We wanted to combine the structural advantage of electrospun fiber and the activity of bromelain and PDA to develop functional wound dressings. We found that bromelain activity could be better stabilized when via its immobilization on electrospun fibers. The resultant BrPDA-PCL fibers exhibited promising properties including optimal mechanical stability, wettability, and rates of water vapor transmission. In addition, these BrPDA-PCL fibers were biocompatible, allowing for effective cellular adhesion and proliferation. The results of zone of inhibition testing further confirmed that these fibers achieved effective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. When used in vivo, as compared with PCL fibers or control animals the BrPDA-PCL fibers enhanced wound healing rates while reducing associated inflammation. As such, these results indicate that these biocompatible BrPDA-PCL fibers exhibit desirable physicochemical properties making them ideal for use as a wound dressing to enhance the repair of full-thickness wounds to the skin.

Five unusual dimers of ent-labdane diterpenoids (1-5) were isolated and identified from Andrographis paniculata, a famous medicinal plant. Bisandrographolide E (1) represents the first example of a labdane dimer possessing an unprecedent tricyclic system that comprised a spiroketal moiety fused with a ketal-γ-lactone unit in its skeleton. Its biosynthetically related intermediates, all four stereoisomers at C-12 and C-15', bisandrographolides F (2, a new compound) and A-C (3-5), were obtained at the same time. The steric configurations of the newly formed asymmetric carbons in 1-5 were first solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of the diacetone derivatives of 2-4 and ECD and NMR calculations of 1. More importantly, bisandrographolides 1-5, with different chemical structures or absolute configurations at C-12 and C-15', selectively activated different TRPV1-4 channels and protected cardiomyocytes from hypoxia-reoxygenation injury. Among them, 5 with 12R/15'S configuration activated TRPV1 most effectively and displayed the best cardiomyocyte protection.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of vitamin D (VD) against hyperoxia-induced bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in newborn mice and explore the mechanism. METHODS: Thirty-six newborn mice were randomly divided into air + VD group, air + saline group, hyperoxia + VD group, and hyperoxia + saline group. In all the groups, saline or VD was administered on a daily basis via intramuscular injection. After 3 weeks of treatment, the mice were weighed and cardiac blood was collected for measurement of serum VD level using ELISA, and histological examination of the lungs was performed. Radial alveolar counting (RAC) and alveolar secondary interval volume density were measured using image analysis software. The expression levels of vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in the lung tissues were detected using Western blotting. RESULTS: The weight gain rate of the mice and the weight of the lungs were significantly higher in air + saline group and air + VD group than in the hyperoxia + saline group. The RAC was significantly lower in hyperoxic+saline group than that in hyperoxia+VD group (P < 0.001), and was significantly higher in hyperoxic+VD (125 times) than in hyperoxia + VD (1250 times) group (P < 0.01). The alveolar secondary protrusion count was significantly higher in hyperoxic+VD (1250 times) group than in hyperoxic+saline group (P < 0.001), and was significantly higher in hyperoxia+VD (125 times) group than in hyperoxia + VD (1250 times) group (P < 0.01). Compared with that in air + saline group, VEGFR2 expression was significantly lowered in hyperoxia+saline group (P < 0.05) and in air+VD group (P < 0.05); VEGFR2 expression was significantly higher in hyperoxia+VD (1250 times) group than in hyperoxia+saline group (P < 0.001) and hyperoxia+VD (125 times) group (P < 0.001); VEGFR2 expression was significantly higher in hyperoxia+VD (125 times) group than in hyperoxia+ saline group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In newborn mice with BPD, VD supplement can increase the weight of the lungs and promote lung maturation, and a higher concentration of VD can better protect the lungs and promote the growth of pulmonary blood vessels.

Rheum palmatum has a long history in medicine, which is one of the main export medicinal herb in China. The complete chloroplast genome of R. palmatum was assembled and reported in this study. The R. palmatum chloroplast genome was 161,541 bp in length as the circular and consisted a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,519 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 13,112 bp and a pair of inverted-repeat (IR) regions of 30,955 bp. The nucleotide composition was asymmetric 31.2% A (Adenine), 31.5% T (Thymine), 19.0% C (Cytosine), and 18.3% G (Guanine) with an overall G + C content of 37.3%. It encoded 131 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes (76 PCG species), 37 transfer RNA genes (26 tRNAs species), and eight ribosomal RNA genes (four rRNAs species). The Phylogenetic relationships used neighbour-joining (NJ) method and the result showed that R. palmatum and Rheum officinale are phylogenetically related to each other in the family Polygonaceae. This study will be very important for Chinese medicinal herb research value and clinical drug development for future in China.

To achieve dual-reuse of both enzyme and support in enzyme immobilization, hybrid nanoflowers (hNFs) were synthesized and crystallized in aqueous solution using calcium phosphate as inorganic component and enzyme as organic component. When hNFs lost their catalytic activity after reuse for times, they underwent dissolution and recrystallization to achieve the dual-cycle of enzyme and support. Six enzymes including papain, bromelain, trypsin, Lipase from Porcine Pancreas (PPL), Lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL) and Lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) were chose as model enzymes and the obtained hNFs all presented high catalytic activity and thermal stability. The highest catalytic efficiency (K cat/K m) of TLL-hNFs was 38.52 mM-1 s-1, 21.7 folds than that of free enzyme. Moreover, after heating for 6 h at 70 °C, the residual activities of TLL-hNFs, PPL-hNFs, and CALB-hNFs, were 78.3%, 72.9% and 84.3%, which were 4.57, 2.61 2.35 folds of that of their corresponding free one. Furthermore, the recovery rate of Ca3(PO4)2 were above 95% by recrystallizing the calcium phosphate with fresh enzymes after dissolving the used hNFs and removing the denatured enzyme. The recrystallized hNFs using the recovered phosphate salts and fresh enzymes all gave the consistent catalytic activities. This sustainable dual-cycle method depending on calcium phosphate crystallization, dissolution and recrystallization, was facile and efficient and can also be applied to other enzymes immobilization for industrial biocatalysis.

A capillary electrophoresis fingerprint was constructed for Sanhuang tablet, a Chinese traditional patent medicine, that was commonly used in clinical practice, where the isosceles trapezoid method was first applied for the optimization of background electrolyte solution, and the resolution index was performed to assess the experimental conditions; furthermore, a novel linear quantitative fingerprint method was established for accurate qualitative and quantitative discrimination of the test samples from diverse commercial brands. The fingerprint analysis coupled with quantitative determination of two components was employed to elucidate that the quality consistency of the products was relatively good within one manufactory, but poor among different companies for the 30 batches of samples. In addition, the fingerprint-efficacy relationship between chemical components and antioxidant activity in vitro was investigated using partial least squares analysis, and the calibration and prediction of the antioxidant activity of the selected samples via fingerprint data were presented with the desired results. This work illustrates that the proposed fingerprint analysis based on linear quantitative fingerprint method can be applied for the quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine and herbal preparations as part of their quality control, and the constructed mathematical model is particularly suitable for depicting the fingerprint-efficacy relationship.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effects of Xingpi Yang'er Granule (XYG) on serum gastrin (GAS), plasma motilin (MOT), and somatostatin (SS) in children patients with pneumonia induced diarrhea.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Recruited were 120 children inpatients with pneumonia induced diarrhea at the Department of Pediatrics, Liaocheng People's Hospital from June 2011 to June 2012. They were randomly assigned to two groups, the treatment group and the control group, 60 in each group. Those in the treatment group were treated with XYG, while those in the control group were treated with Live Combined Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus Tablets. Besides, 30 healthy children who received physical examinations at our hospital were recruited as the healthy control group. The clinical efficacy, changes of GAS, MOT, and SS contents were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate was 95.0% in the treatment group and 93.3% in the control group, showing no statistical difference (P > 0.05). Compared with healthy control group, the GAS and MOT contents increased, and SS decreased before treatment in the other two groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the same group before treatment, GAS and MOT contents obviously decreased, and SS increased in the other two groups after treatment (P<0.05). Compared with the control group at the same time point, GAS and MOT decreased, and SS increased in the treatment group after treatment, showing statistical differences (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The levels of GAS, MOT, and SS were obviously changed in children patients with pneumonia induced diarrhea. XYG had obvious regulation on their GAS, MOT and SS contents.</p>
