RESUMO

1. In long-lived animals with delayed maturity, the non-breeding component of the population may play an important role in buffering the effects of stochastic mortality. Populations of colonial seabirds often consist of more than 50% non-breeders, yet because they spend much of their early life at sea, we understand little about their impact on the demographic process. 2. Using multistate capture-mark-recapture techniques, we analyse a long-term data set of individually identifiable common guillemots, Uria aalge Pont., to assess factors influencing their immature survival and two-stage recruitment process. 3. Analysis of the distribution of ringed common guillemots during the non-breeding season, separated by age classes, revealed that all age classes were potentially at risk from four major oil spills. However, the youngest age class (0-3 years) were far more widely spread than birds 4-6 years old, which were more widely spread than birds aged 6 and over. Therefore the chance of encountering an oil spill was age-dependent. 4. A 2-year compound survival estimate for juvenile guillemots was weakly negatively correlated with winter sea-surface temperature, but was not influenced by oil spills. Non-breeder survival did not vary significantly over time. 5. In years following four oil spills, juvenile recruitment was almost double the value in non-oil-spill years. Recent work from Skomer Island showed a doubling of adult mortality associated with major oil spills, which probably reduced competition at the breeding colony, allowing increased immature recruitment to compensate for these losses. We discuss the implications of compensatory recruitment for assessing the impact of oil pollution incidents.

RESUMO

Guinea pigs were exposed to pure tones of 10 kHz at intensities between 98 and 115 dB SPL for 5-30 min, to produce varying degrees of acoustic trauma. Changes in auditory thresholds were measured electrophysiologically, and the animals were immediately fixed for scanning electron microscopy. Correlation between morphological changes to the hair bundle and losses in threshold, showed that with the smallest degrees of trauma (98 dB SPL for 15 min, mean maximum threshold loss of 22 dB), damage was confined to a small stretch of inner hair cells (IHC), with only subtle changes to the stereocilia of the outer hair cells (OHC). At exposure intensities greater than 102 dB SPL (duration: 15 min) the IHC stereocilia in the centre of the lesion were always substantially disarrayed. Substantial damage to the OHC bundles was seen only with exposures above 110 dB SPL (duration: > or = 5 min), producing threshold losses of 50 dB or more. Tip links were lost only where the stereocilia were disarrayed. It is concluded that the tip links are not the most vulnerable components of the cochlear hair cell, but that relatively low levels of acoustic stimulation can cause significant damage to the stereociliary bundle of the IHCs.

RESUMO

Plasma amino acid concentrations were measured during fasting and after 3 days of enteral feeding in 16 trauma patients on a glutamine-supplemented diet and 14 patients on an isonitrogenous control diet. During fasting, total amino acids, including glutamine, were depressed by 50% and this was attributed to a reduction in both essential and nonessential amino acids. The essential amino acid concentrations increased in both groups after feeding. The nonessential amino acid concentrations also increased in the control group but not in the glutamine group during feeding. Repletion of the glutamine extracellular pool was not evident after an average intake of 27.1 g per day of glutamine for 3 days. Nitrogen balance was similar for the two groups during feeding. We conclude that in this study, enteral glutamine did not increase the glutamine plasma concentration. In addition, both formulas improved the hypoaminoacidemia of essential amino acids but only the control diet improved the nonessential amino acids plasma concentration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Glutamine-supplemented parenteral nutrition has been reported to attenuate the early postoperative reduction in intracellular glutamine and improve protein synthesis and nitrogen balance. We investigated the effect of an enteral formula or protein and glucose kinetics and nitrogen balance in trauma patients. METHODS: The enteral formula (AlitraQ) provided a mean intake of 0.35 g of glutamine/kg body weight per day to 16 trauma patients and was compared with an isonitrogenous formula that provided a mean of 0.05 g of glutamine/kg body weight per day in 14 trauma patients. After 3 days of feeding, protein kinetics were measured using a 4-hour prime-continuous infusion of L-[1-13C]leucine. Glucose kinetics were measured during the same time interval using prime-continuous infusion of [U-14C]- and [6-3H]glucose. RESULTS: Nitrogen balance was not significantly different in the two groups. There were no significant differences in protein turnover, synthesis, and breakdown between the two groups. There were no significant differences in glucose turnover, oxidation, recycling, and percent of VCO2 from glucose oxidation between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Glutamine-enriched enteral formulas are well tolerated by the severely injured patient but provide no additional nutritional advantage compared with standard enteral formulas during the first 3 days of feeding immediately after trauma.

RESUMO

Proximal jejunal mucosal biopsy was performed by a radiologist through the nasojejunal catheter at the time of enteroclysis. Seventeen patients (10 men and seven women, aged 23-73 years [mean, 46 years]) were studied with enteroclysis because of clinical signs of malabsorption with suspected small bowel disease. In seven (41%) patients, results at biopsy were positive, and results in another seven (41%) were positive at enteroclysis. In 10 (59%) patients, results were positive at one or both tests. Performance of both small bowel biopsy and enteroclysis at the same session is feasible and offers additional clinically pertinent information than can be obtained at enteroclysis alone.

RESUMO

In the present study, we examined the binding of [3H][D-Ala2,D-Leu5]enkephalin ([ 3H]DADL) to bovine thalamic membranes. Scatchard plots were linear with a KD of 0.7 nM. However, competition experiments suggested binding heterogeneity. Approximately 20% of [3H]DADL binding was easily inhibited by [D-Pen2,D-Pen5]enkephalin (DPDPE) and was insensitive to morphine, implying labeling of delta receptors. The remaining 80% of binding was quite sensitive to both morphine and [D-Ala2,MePhe4,Gly(ol)5]enkephalin (DAGO) and insensitive to DPDPE, consistent with a mu receptor. However, this binding did not correspond to classical morphine-selective mu receptors. Unlike morphine-selective receptors, this binding had similar affinities for morphine, DAGO, DADL and [D-Ser2,Leu5]enkephalin-Thr6 (DSLET). In addition, it was far more sensitive to naloxonazine's wash-resistant inhibition and magnesium-induced enhancement of binding than either the morphine-selective (mu 2) or delta sites. [3H]DSLET binding yielded results very similar to those using [3H]DADL. In conclusion, approximately 80% of [3H]DADL binding in thalamus corresponds to a mu receptor distinct from the classical morphine-selective site. Based upon the results of our studies, we feel that this binding represents mu 1 receptors. DPDPE (10 nM) can effectively inhibit the binding of [3H]DADL to delta receptors, leaving a relatively homogeneous labeling of mu 1 sites. The availability of this selective binding assay should facilitate additional studies of mu 1 receptors.

RESUMO

This study was designed to systematically investigate personality, psychophysiological, and cognitive appraisal variables in three groups of mothers, i.e., abusive (N = 14), neglectful (N = 13), and low-income control (N = 15). All subjects completed a Mini-Mult, the Repression-Sensitization Scale, the Group Embedded Figures Test, the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist, and the Socialization scale of the California Psychological Inventory. They listened to an audiotape sequence of white noise, tone, and infant's cry sounds while cardiovascular and skin resistance measures were recorded. The mothers also rated six dimensions of the infant's cry on a semantic differential. The three groups of mothers differed on a variety of personality variables, e.g., on F, Depression (D), Psychopathic Deviate (Pd), Psychasthenia (Pt), and Schizophrenia (Sc) from the Mini-Mult, on their cognitive appraisal of the infant's cry, and on skin resistance measures. A combination of personality, psychophysiological, and cry rating variables was entered in a discriminant analysis that was successful in discriminating 80% of the subjects. The two significant discriminant functions were defined primarily by the Pd scale and a cognitive appraisal measure.
