Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a most common type of oral cancer. Due to its highly invasive nature and poor survival rate, the development of effective pharmacological therapeutic agents is urgently required. Quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) is a polyphenolic flavonoid found in plants and is an active component of Chinese herbal medicine. The present study investigated the pharmacological effects and possible mechanisms of quercetin on apoptosis of the tongue SCC-derived SAS cell line. Following treatment with quercetin, cell viability was assessed via the MTT assay. Apoptotic and necrotic cells, mitochondrial transmembrane potential and caspase-3/7 activity were analyzed via flow cytometric analyses. A caspase-3 activity assay kit was used to detect the expression of caspase-3 activity. Western blot analysis was performed to examine the expression levels of proteins associated with the MAPKs, AMPKα, GSK3-α/ß and caspase-related signaling pathways. The results revealed that quercetin induced morphological alterations and decreased the viability of SAS cells. Quercetin also increased apoptosis-related Annexin V-FITC fluorescence and caspase-3 activity, and induced mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signals, including a decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane potential and Bcl-2 protein expression, and an increase in cytosolic cytochrome c, Bax, Bak, cleaved caspase-3, cleaved caspase-7 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase protein expression. Furthermore, quercetin significantly increased the protein expression levels of phosphorylated (p)-ERK, p-JNK1/2 and p-GSK3-α/ß, but not p-p38 or p-AMPKα in SAS cells. Pretreatment with the pharmacological JNK inhibitor SP600125 effectively reduced the quercetin-induced apoptosis-related signals, as well as p-ERK1/2 and p-GSK3-α/ß protein expression. Both ERK1/2 and GSK3-α/ß inhibitors, PD98059 and LiCl, respectively, could significantly prevent the quercetin-induced phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and GSK3-α/ß, but not JNK activation. Taken together, these results suggested that quercetin may induce tongue SCC cell apoptosis via the JNK-activation-regulated ERK1/2 and GSK3-α/ß-mediated mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The flower buds of Tussilago farfara L. (Abbreviated as FTF) were widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat respiratory diseases, including asthma, dry throat, great thirst, turbid saliva, stinky pus, and coughs caused by various causes. AIM OF STUDY: The aim of study is to explore the efficiency of FTF in vitro and in vivo for the treatment of lung inflammation, and to illustrate the possible mechanisms of FTF in treating inflammation-related respiratory diseases targeting NOD-like receptor 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB). METHODS: Lung inflammation model in vivo was induced by exposure of mice to cigarette smoke (CS) for two weeks. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), inflammatory factors, and histology in lung tissues were investigated in presence or absence of ethanol extract of the flower buds of T. farfara L. (FTF-EtOH). In the cell-based models, nitric oxide (NO) assay, flow cytometry assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa), and glutathione (GSH) assay were used to explore the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of FTF-EtOH. Possible anti-inflammatory mechanisms of FTF targeting NLRP3 inflammasome, Nrf2, and NF-κB have been determined using western blot, quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), immunofluorescence assay, nuclear and cytoplasmic extraction, and ubiqutination assay. RESULTS: FTF-EtOH suppressed CS-induced overproduction of inflammatory factors [e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß)], and upregulation of the content of intracellular MDA in the lung homogenate of mice. In cell-based models, FTF-EtOH reduced the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced overproduction of inflammatory factors, and attenuated the CS extract-induced overgeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, FTF-EtOH up-regulated Nrf2 and its downstream genes through enhancing the stability of Nrf2 protein, and inhibited the activation of NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome, which have been confirmed by detecting the protein levels in the mouse model. CONCLUSIONS: FTF-EtOH effectively attenuated lung inflammation in vitro and in vivo. The protection of FTF-EtOH against inflammation was produced by activation of Nrf2 and inhibitions of NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome. These datas definitely support the ethnopharmacological use of FTF as an anti-inflammatory drug for treating respiratory diseases in TCM.

Communicating the finiteness of the Earth system at sub-global scales is necessary to guide human activities within a safe operating space. Despite the numerous efforts committed to downscaling planetary boundaries (PBs) at multiple scales, neither top-down nor bottom-up approaches adequately account for the spatial heterogeneity and integrity of local and global natural systems. To overcome these shortcomings, we developed a hybrid approach that combines bottom-up aggregation and top-down adjustment for downscaling five crucial PBs (i.e., climate change, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, freshwater use, and land use change) to Chinese provinces and industries. In addition to the widely applied equity principle, we further incorporated the eco-efficiency principle into the downscaling of PBs under the proposition that safeguarding finite PBs should be reconciled with the pursuit of maximizing human welfare. Environmental sustainability at multiple scales was subsequently assessed with the complementary use of environmental footprints and downscaled PBs. The results demonstrate that 1) China suffers from severe unsustainability because of the transgression of PBs for phosphorus and nitrogen cycles, carbon emissions, and cropland use; 2) provinces in West and North China perform worse than other provinces in terms of the eco-efficiency in manufacturing industries, including Electronic equipment, Textiles, and Wood processing and furnishing, rendering these industries that are more unsustainable; and 3) industries with varying eco-efficiencies account differently for the provincial PBs. Construction dominates the provincial shares of carbon PBs, whereas Agriculture and Food processing and tobacco contribute most to the other four PBs. Our findings suggest that improving eco-efficiency in most manufacturing industries is the key to saving resources, reducing emissions, and safeguarding local boundaries.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine (1) the feasibility of the study procedures (i.e. recruitment, retention, attendance, and assessment completion rates), and (2) the effects of horticultural therapy (HT) on apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity.Methods: This was a parallel-group, match-paired, randomized controlled trial. Thirty-two participants were allocated to either the experimental or the control group. Data were collected at baseline (T0), immediately postintervention (T1), and 3 months postintervention (T2). The Apathy Evaluation Scale-informant version (AES-I); Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease (QoL-AD) scale; Barthel index (BI) were used to measure apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity, respectively.Results: The recruitment, retention, attendance and assessment completion rates were 22.7%, 87.5%, 100% and 100%, respectively. The between-group differences in AES-I (p = 0.007) and MMSE (p = 0.034) scores were statistically significant at T1. In the experimental group, the AES-I (p = 0.001), MMSE (p = 0.010), and QoL-AD (p = 0.017) scores were significantly different over time. In the post hoc pair-wise analysis, the AES-I scores of the experimental group observed at T1 were significantly lower than that at T0 (p = 0.032). In the control group, the MMSE scores (p = 0.001) were significantly different over time.Conclusion: HT is feasible for residents with dementia and apathy. The HT program effectively reduced apathy and promoted cognitive function, but its effects on quality of life and functional capacity were not observed.

Two new physalins, 7α-hydroxy-5-deoxy-4-dehydrophysalin IX (1) and 5-deoxy-4-dehydrophysalin IX (2), together with six known compounds, luteolin (3), luteolin-7-O-glucoside (4), neoechinulin A (5), 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-propenamide (6), physalin D (7) and blumenol A (8) were isolated from Physalis alkekengi L. var. franchetii (Mast.) Makino. Their structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopic analysis, HR-ESI-MS, X-ray crystallographic data analysis and comparison with the known compounds. Among them, compounds 5 and 6 were isolated from the genus Physalis for the first time. Compound 1 exhibited weak NAD(P)H: quinone reductase (QR) inducing activity.

Arisaematis Rhizoma included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is the dried tuber of Arisaema erubescens, A. heterophyllum or A. amurense in the family Araceae. This paper mainly focuses on the classification and summary of the chemical components and structures reported in recent years in the above three varieties of this medicinal material included in the pharmacopoeia, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, lignans and benzene ring derivatives, steroids and terpenes, glycosides and esters, etc. Then we reviewed the reported biological activities of these chemical components, including cytotoxicity, antitumor activity, antibacterial activity, nematicidal activity, etc. Although there have been reports on the review of the chemical composition of the medicinal material, the structure and classification of the chemical composition in these reviews are not clear enough. This review provides a basis for the later study of the chemical composition of this medicinal material, especially the identification of the chemical structures. And most of the current reviews on the biological activity of this medicinal material are mainly for the crude extract. This paper mainly summarized the biological activity of related monomer compounds and expected to lay a foundation for the development of novel high-efficiency and low-toxicity active leading compounds from Arisaematis Rhizoma.

The rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. has been widely used for the therapy of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The nuclear transcription factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is a potential target for treating DN. The purpose of this research was to study the chemical constituents from the rhizome of L. chuanxiong, evaluate their Nrf2 inducing activity, and find the molecules with potential therapeutic effect against DN. In this study, two new phthalides (1-2) along with twenty-seven known constituents were obtained from the rhizome of L. chuanxiong. Their structures were elucidated through various spectroscopic methods. Twelve constituents, including eight phthalides (2, 5, 6,10-13, 14) and four other compounds (17, 18, 20,28), stimulated NAD(P)H: quinone reductase (QR) activity, suggesting that these bioactive constituents were potential Nrf2 activators. Among the isolated compounds, phthalide levistolide A (LA, 14) upregulated the protein levels of Nrf2, NQO1, and γ-GCS in a dose-dependent manner. Our results implied that the clinical application of the rhizome of L. chuanxiong as an anti-DN drug in TCM might be attributed to the Nrf2 inducing effect of phthalides. Thus, phthalides is a group of promising leading molecules for discovering anti-DN agents.

BACKGROUND: Suction-curettage using an arthroscopic shaver is the most effective surgical treatment for bromhidrosis; however, information regarding the procedure is limited. This study investigated the factors that affect the efficacy of suction-curettage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data for 215 patients (430 axillae) with bromhidrosis treated with suction-curettage using an arthroscopic shaver between 2011 and 2019. RESULTS: Excellent or good efficacy with improved malodor was achieved in 418 axillae (97.21%). Secondary suction-curettage was performed for 11 (2.56%), with excellent results. Efficacy and need for secondary suction-curettage were not associated with age, sex, shaving time, and tumescent infiltration use. Complications were observed in 52 (12.09%) axillae, including hematoma or seroma, epidermis decortication, skin necrosis, and infections; 10 (2.33%) required local debridement for wounds. Complications showed a significant difference with respect to age (p < .001). Pain scores on postoperative Day 2 were significantly lower for patients treated using tumescent infiltration than those for the others (1.65 ± 0.84 vs 4.57 ± 1.16; p < .001). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that 7 to 15 minutes of suction curettage using an arthroscopic shaver is sufficient to achieve good efficacy for bromhidrosis with few complications. Older age was a risk factor for complications, and tumescent infiltration use achieved good postoperative pain control. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: II.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Thesium chinense Turcz. has been used to treat mastitis, pulmonitis, tonsillitis, iaryngopharyngitis and upper respiratory tract infections in the indigenous medicine of China for a long history. Presently, several pharmaceutics prepared by this medical herb have been clinically used for the therapy of infectious diseases. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to comprehensively summarize the current researches on the ethnomedical, phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of T. chinense, and discuss their possible opportunities for the future research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extensive database searches, including Web of Science, SciFinder, Google Scholar and China Knowledge Resource Integrated, were performed using keywords such as 'Thesium chinense', 'Bai Rui Cao', and their chemical constituents. In addition, local classic herbal literature on ethnopharmacology and relevant textbooks were consulted to provide a comprehensive survey of this ethnomedicine. RESULTS: Thirty four chemical constituents, including flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids, have been identified from T. chinense. Of which, flavonoids are the predominant and characteristic constituents. The crude extracts, the purified constituents, and commercial available pharmaceutics have displayed diverse in vitro and in vivo pharmacological functions (e.g. anti-inflammation, antimicrobial activity, analgesic effect, hepaprotection), and are particularly useful as a potential therapeutic agent against inflammation-related diseases. CONCLUSIONS: T. chinense is an important ethnomedical medicine and possesses a satisfying effect for treating inflammation, microbial infection, and upper respiratory diseases. It has received plenty of researches on its phytochemical and pharmacological aspects since 1970s. These findings definitely establish the link between chemical composition and pharmacological application, and support the ethnomedical use of T. chinense in the indigenous medicine of China. However, chemical composition of this plant and the molecular mechanisms of purified constituents have not been comprehensively investigated, and thus the trace constituents and the therapeutic targets of bioactive constituents deserve a further exploration. Collectively, the researchers should pay more attention to a better understanding and application of this ethnomedical plant.

Physalis Calyx seu Fructus, a traditional Chinese medicine consisting of the calyxes and fruits of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, has been used as therapy for inflammation-related respiratory diseases such as excessive phlegm, cough, sore throat, and pharyngitis for a long history in China. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chemical constituents of Physalis Calyx seu Fructus and identify the bioactive constituents responsible for its traditional application as therapy for inflammation-related diseases. In the present study, one new phenylpropanoid (1: ), two new steroids (17: and 18: ), together with 55 known constituents have been purified from the EtOH extract of Physalis Calyx seu Fructus. Among them, seven and twelve known constituents were isolated for the first time from Physalis Calyx seu Fructus and the genus Physalis, respectively. Fourteen constituents, including steroids [physalins (5: â-â9, 12: â-â14: , and 15: ) and ergostane (21: )], a sesquiterpenoid (35: ), alkaloids (36: and 37: ), and a flavonoid (44: ), showed inhibitory effects against oxidative stress. Ten constituents, including steroids (5, 6, 8, 13: , and 15: ), sesquiterpenoids (34: and 35: ), alkaloids (37: and 41: ), and a flavonoid (43: ), were found be potential anti-inflammatory constituents of this medicinal plant. The inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammatory response may be related to the regulation of Nrf2 and nuclear factor-κB pathways. The ethnomedical use of Physalis Calyx seu Fructus as a treatment for respiratory diseases might be attributed to the combined inhibitory effects of steroids, alkaloids, sesquiterpenoids, and flavonoids against oxidative stress and inflammatory response.

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of tuina manipulations in treating different types of tic disorders (TD). Methods: Eligible TD patients were classified into three types, transient tic disorders (TTD), chronic multiple tic disorders (CMTD) and Tourette syndrome (TS), according to their disease duration and severity. The three types of children were treated with the same tuina manipulations. Changes in the Yale global tic severity scale (YGTSS) score, effective rate for tic, and cervical spine imaging examination results (including asymmetry of the lateral atlanto-dental interval, broadened anterior atlanto-dental interval, C2 spinous process deviation, occipito-atlanto-axial flexion/ extension instability) were observed after 1-month and 3-month treatments respectively. Results: The YGTSS score changed significantly after 1-month and 3-month treatments compared with that before treatment (both P<0.01); the effective rate for TD was 46.6% and 86.7% respectively after 1-month and 3-month treatments; there were significant differences comparing the effective rate for tic between different types of TD after 1-month and 3-month treatments (all P<0.05); comparing the effective rate for tic after 1-month treatment with that after 3-month treatment for the same type, the intra-group differences were statistically significant [TTD group (P<0.01), CMTD group (P<0.01), TS group (P<0.05)]; the abnormal parameter rates in neck imaging examination after 3-month treatment were significantly different from those before treatment (all P<0.01). Conclusion: Tuina manipulation is effective for TTD, CMTD and TS. It can correct the abnormal alterations of patients' cervical vertebrae, and its efficacy for TTD is most significant.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder linked to oxidative stress of rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLSs). The effects and potential mechanism of salicin on inflammation and oxidative stress of RA-FLSs were examined by MTT, ELISA, and Western blot methods. Salicin significantly reduced cell viability (82.03 ± 7.06, P < 0.01), cytokines (47.70 ± 1.48 ng/L for TNF-α, 30.03 ± 3.49 ng/L for IL-6) ( P < 0.01), and matrix metalloproteinases-1/-3 expression ( P < 0.01) in IL-1ß-induced RA-FLSs and inhibited ROS generation and p65 phosphorylation ( P < 0.01) as compared with IL-1ß-induced treatment. Moreover, salicin promoted Nrf2 nuclear translocation (2.15 ± 0.21) and HO-1 expression (1.12 ± 0.05) and reduced ROS production in IL-1ß-induced RA-FLSs ( P < 0.01). Salicin not only reduced the collagen-induced arthritis by reducing the clinical score ( P < 0.01), inflammatory infiltration, and synovial hyperplasia in vivo but also suppressed the oxidative damage indexes (SOD 155.40 ± 6.53 U/mg tissue, MDA 152.80 ± 5.89 nmol/g tissue, GSH 50.98 ± 3.45 nmol/g tissue, and CAT 0.92 ± 0.10 U/g protein) ( P < 0.01) of ankle joint cells. Conclusively, our findings indicate that salicin ameliorates rheumatoid arthritis, which may be associated with oxidative stress and Nrf2-HO-1-ROS pathways in RA-FLSs.

In this work, the feasibility of a novel sensitive electrochemiluminescence aptasensor for the detection of lysozyme using Ru(bpy)32+-Silica@Poly-L-lysine-Au (RuSiNPs@PLL-Au) nanocomposites labeling as an indicator was demonstrated. The substrate electrode of the aptasensor was prepared by depositing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on 3D graphene-modified electrode. The lysozyme binding aptamer (LBA) was attached to the 3D graphene/AuNPs electrode through gold-thiol affinity, hybridized with a complementary single-strand DNA (CDNA) of the lysozyme aptamer labeled by RuSiNPs@PLL-Au as an electrochemiluminescence intensity amplifier. Thanks to the synergistic amplification of the 3D graphene, the AuNPs and RuSiNPs@PLL-Au NPs linked to Ru(bpy)32+-ECL further enhanced the ECL intensity of the aptasensor. In presence of lysozyme, the CDNA segment of the self-assembled duplex was displaced by the lysozyme, resulting in decreased electrochemiluminescence signal. Under the optimized conditions, the decrease in electrochemiluminescence intensity varied proportionally with the logarithmic concentration of the lysozyme from 2.25 × 10-12 to 5.0 × 10-8 molâ¯L-1, and the detection limit was estimated to 7.5 × 10-13 molâ¯L-1. The aptasensor was further tested in real samples and found reliable for the detection of lysozyme, thus holding great potential application in food safety researches and bioassay analysis.

Bladder cancer is a common malignancy worldwide. However, there is still no effective therapy for bladder cancer. In this study, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of cantharidin [a natural toxin produced (pure compound) from Chinese blister beetles (Mylabrisphalerata or Mylabriscichorii) and Spanish flies (Cantharis vesicatoria)] in human bladder cancer cell lines (including: T24 and RT4 cells). Treatment of human bladder cancer cells with cantharidin significantly decreased cell viability. The increase in the expressions of caspase-3 activity and cleaved form of caspase-9/-7/-3 were also increased in cantharidin-treated T24 cells. Furthermore, cantharidin increased the levels of phospho-eIF2α and Grp78 and decreased the protein expression of procaspase-12, which was accompanied by the increase in calpain activity in T24 cells. Cantharidin was capable of increasing the intracellular Ca (2+) and the phosphorylation of protein kinase C (PKC) in T24 cells. The addition of BAPTA/AM (a Ca (2+) chelator) and RO320432 (a selective cell-permeable PKC inhibitor) effectively reversed the increase in caspase-3 and calpain activity, the phosphorylation levels of PKC and eIF2α and Grp78 protein expression, and the decrease in procaspase-12 expression induced by cantharidin. Importantly, cantharidin significantly decreased the tumor volume (a dramatic 71% reduction after 21 days of treatment) in nude mice xenografted with T24 cells. Taken together, these results indicate cantharidin induced human bladder cancer cell apoptosis through a calcium/PKC-regulated ER stress pathway. These findings suggest that cantharidin may be a novel and potential anticancer agent targeting on bladder cancer cells.

OBJECTIVE: Only a few clinical reports in the treatment of early mycosis fungoides (MF)(IA, IB, IIA stage) are available in the literature. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of narrow-band UVB and psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) photochemoterapy in 24 patients with early-stage MF, and explore a new approach for the treatment of early mycosis fungoides. METHODS: A total of 24 identified early mycosis fungoides patients received PUVA, NB-UVB and a combined therapy of PUVA followed by NB-UVB (n = 9/6/9) irradiation. A retrospective study was carried out to analyze the sex, age of onset, TNM stage, treatment, and duration of treatment, and times of treatment, duration of maintenance treatment, effective and recurrence in these patients. The data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0 and a two-sided test at the α = 0.05 level of significance was conducted. RESULTS: Of the 24 patients studied, the average treatment was 104.5 (95% CI, 75.71-133.29) times. The average duration of treatment was 12.88 (95% CI, 9.90-15.85) months. The average maintenance treatment time was 11.08 (95% CI, 2.13-20.04) months. The effective rate (CR+PR) of PUVA treatment was 88.9%, recurrence rate was 11.1% (n = 9). In the NB-UVB treatment group, the effective rate was 100.0%, and the recurrence rate was 33.3% (n = 6). In the PUVA followed by NB-UVB (combination therapy) treatment group, the effective rate was 77.8% and the recurrence rate was 55.6% (n = 9). There were no significant differences among the three groups in terms of number of treatments, treatment duration, maintenance treatment duration, effective rate and recurrence rate (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: PUVA and NB-UVB are effective and safe in the targeted therapy of early stage mycosis fungoides. The combined therapy of PUVA followed by NB-UVB can reduce the total PUVA dose and risk of developing skin cancer.

Inflammation is a serious health issue worldwide that induces many diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), sepsis, acute pancreatitis and lung injury. Thus, there is a great deal of interest in new methods of limiting inflammation. In this study, we investigated the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, an aquatic perennial plant cultivated in eastern Asia and India, in anti-inflammatory pharmacological effects in the murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7. Results showed that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) increased the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and COX-2, as well as the mRNA expression and level of IL-6 and TNF-α, while NNE significantly reduced these effects of LPS. LPS also induced phospho-JNK protein expression. The JNK-specific inhibitor SP600125 decreased the proteins expression of phospho-JNK, iNOS, COX-2, and the mRNAs expression and levels of IL-6 and TNF-α. Further, NNE reduced the protein expression of phospho-JNK. LPS was also found to promote the translocation of NF-κB from the cytosol to the nucleus and to decrease the expression of cytosolic IκB. NNE and SP600125 treatment recovered the LPS-induced expression of NF-κB and IκB. While phospho-ERK and phospho-p38 induced by LPS, could not be reversed by NNE. To further investigate the major components of NNE in anti-inflammatory effects, we determined the quercetin and catechin in inflammatory signals. Results showed that quercetin and catechin significantly decreased the proteins expression of iNOS, COX-2 and phospho-JNK. Besides, the mRNAs and levels of IL-6 and TNF-α also decreased by quercetin and catechin treatment in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. These results showed that NNE and its major components quercetin and catechin exhibit anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the JNK- and NF-κB-regulated pathways and could therefore be an useful anti-inflammatory agent.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects and mechanisms of Xuebijing Injection (XI) on multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) patients. METHODS: Recruited were 76 MODS patients at ICU, Zhejiang Provincial Quhua Hospital from February 2009 to September 2011. They were randomly assigned to the control group (36 cases) and the treatment group (40 cases). All patients received conventional treatment. Those in the treatment group were intravenously injected with XI (prepared by adding 100 mL QI in 100 mL normal saline), twice daily for seven successive days. The APACHE II score, SOFA score, serum procalcitonin (PCT), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and 10 (IL-10) of the two groups were observed in the two groups before treatment, at 3 days and 7days after treatment. The ICU stay time and the 28-day mortality were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: After seven days of treatment, the APACHE II score, SOFA score, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-10, and PCT significantly decreased in the treatment group, showing statistical difference when compared with the control group at the same time point (P < 0.05). The 28-day mortality, the ICU stay time, APACHE II score, and SOFA score decreased more significantly in the treatment group than in the control group, showing statistical difference (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: XI could significantly reduce the ICU stay time of MODS patients, and its mechanisms might be correlated to regulating inflammatory reactions.

AIM: To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among related species of Lycium samples. METHODS: Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting and lab-on-a-chip electrophoresis techniques were used to analyze the characteristics of Lycium species. Seven species and 3 varieties of Lycium were studied. Based on RAPD fingerprint data obtained from 11 primers, we proposed a new index, called dispersivity, using entropy theory and projection methods to depict the diversity of the DNA fingerprints. RESULTS: Using the proposed dispersivity, primers were sorted and the dendrograms of the 7 species and 3 varieties of Lycium were constructed synthetically by merging primer information. CONCLUSION: Phylogenetic relationships among Lycium samples were constructed synthetically based on RAPD fingerprint data generated from 11 primers.
