INTRODUCTION: There is a large diversity in the clinical presentation of frozen shoulder (FS) and the clinical outcome is not always satisfactory. The aim of the current study was to examine to what extent range of motion (ROM) limitation, metabolic factors (diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders), autonomic symptoms and pain sensitivity may contribute to the prognosis in terms of shoulder pain and disability and quality of life in patients with FS. METHODS: Patients with stage 1 or 2 FS were longitudinally followed-up during 9 months after baseline assessment. They completed six questionnaires and underwent quantitative sensory testing (pressure pain thresholds, temporal summation and conditioned pain modulation) and ROM assessment. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-nine patients with FS were initially recruited and 121 completed at least one follow-up measurement. Shoulder pain and disability improved over time and diabetes mellitus was found to be a prognostic factor for final outcome. Several domains of quality of life also improved over time and external rotation ROM, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorder and autonomic symptoms were found to be prognostic factors for final outcome. These prognostic factors explained 2.5%-6.3% of the final outcome of shoulder pain and disability and quality of life. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In patients with FS, prognostic variables were able to predict different outcomes, indicating that outcomes in this population can be variable-dependent. Other variables not explored in this study might contribute to the prognosis of patients with FS, which should be investigated in future research. In clinical practice, baseline assessment of prognostic factors and focusing on a more holistic approach might be useful to inform healthcare practitioners about progression of patients with FS during a 9-month period.

The FACE-Q rhinoplasty module (nose and nostrils), Utrecht questionnaire, and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale are validated Dutch patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to evaluate rhinoplasty satisfaction. The objective of this study was to analyze the dimensionality of the measured variables in these four existing questionnaires. Additionally, we investigated the ability of the PROMS to measure change. A prospective single-center study was performed in a consecutive cohort of 106 Dutch-speaking patients. Patients were invited to fill in four PROMs: FACE-Q rhinoplasty module (nose and nostrils), Utrecht questionnaire, and NOSE scale, preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Item quality was calculated in all four questionnaires. The ability of the questionnaires to differentiate between pre- and postoperative patients was determined with a binary logistic regression. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the latent dimensions. Item quality was confirmed in all questionnaires. Backward binary logistic regression revealed that NOSE and FACE-Q nose module were the best discriminant factors pre- and postoperatively. Combination of these two questionnaires gave a specificity of 97.33% and a sensitivity of 94.52% to discriminate between pre- and postoperative cases. Exploratory factor analysis identified the presence of four dimensions: (1) cosmesis of the nose, (2) cosmesis of the nostrils, (3) nasal function, and (4) psychosocial well-being in rhinoplasty patients. Lack of factorial invariance in the preoperative phase, as compared with the postoperative phase, was detected, especially with the FACE-Q nose and to a lesser extent with the Utrecht questionnaire. The FACE-Q rhinoplasty modules (nose and nostrils), the Utrecht questionnaire, and NOSE scale measure different dimensions of rhinoplasty satisfaction and can be used complementary to each other to obtain a more holistic evaluation of rhinoplasty patients. However, the surgeon should keep in mind that lack of factorial invariance preoperative, as opposed to the postoperative phase, may influence the outcome of these questionnaires.

INTRODUCTION: To date, guidelines recommend the use of a stepped care approach to treat tinnitus. The current clinical management of tinnitus frequently consists of audiologic interventions and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Due to the high heterogeneity of the tinnitus population and comorbidity of tinnitus with insomnia, anxiety, and depression, these interventions may not be sufficient for every patient. The current study aims to determine whether a bimodal therapy for chronic, subjective tinnitus consisting of the combination of TRT and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) results in a clinically significant different efficacy in comparison with the prevailing bimodal TRT and CBT therapy. METHODS: Patients were randomized in two treatment groups. The experimental group received the bimodal therapy TRT/EMDR and the active control group received the bimodal therapy TRT/CBT. Evaluations took place at baseline (T0), at the end of the treatment (T1), and 3 months after therapy (T2). The tinnitus functional index (TFI) was used as primary outcome measurement. Secondary outcome measurements were the visual analog scale of tinnitus loudness (VASLoudness), tinnitus questionnaire (TQ), hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), hyperacusis questionnaire (HQ), global perceived effect (GPE), and psychoacoustic measurements. FINDINGS: The TFI showed clinically significant improvement in both bimodal therapies (mean decrease 15.1 in TRT/CBT; p < 0.001 vs. 16.2 in TRT/EMDR; p < 0.001). The total score on the TQ, HADS, HQ, and VASLoudness all demonstrated significant decrease after treatment and follow-up (p < 0.001) in the experimental and the active control group. GPE-measurements revealed that more than 80% (i.e., 84% in TRT/CBT vs. 80% in TRT/EMDR) of the patients experienced substantial improvement of tinnitus at follow up. Treatment outcome remained stable after 3 month follow-up and no adverse events were observed. CONCLUSION: Both psychotherapeutic protocols result in a clinically significant improvement for patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. No significant different efficacy was found for the TRT/EMDR treatment compared to the combination of TRT and CBT. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, ID: NCT03114878. April 14, 2017.

BACKGROUND: In sacral neuromodulation (SNM) patients, it is thought the bellows response elicited upon sacral spinal nerve stimulation is reflex-mediated. Therefore the mechanism of action of SNM is considered to be at the spinal or supraspinal level. These ideas need to be challenged. OBJECTIVE: To identify the neural pathway of the bellows response upon sacral spinal nerve stimulation. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Single tertiary center, prospective study (December 2017-June 2019) including 29 patients with overactive bladder refractory to first-line treatment. INTERVENTION: Recording of the pelvic floor muscle response (PFMR) using a camcorder and electromyography (EMG) (intravaginal probe and concentric needles) upon increasing stimulation during lead or implantable pulse generator placement. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The lowest stimulation intensity needed to elicit a visual PFMR and electrical PFMR was determined. Electrical PFMRs were subdivided according to their latency. OUTCOME: the association between visual and electrical PFMRs. Statistical analyses were performed using the weighted kappa coefficient. RESULTS: Three different electrical PFMRs could be identified by surface and needle EMG, corresponding with a direct efferent motor response (R1), oligosynaptic (R2), and polysynaptic (R3) afferent reflex response. Only the R1 electrical PFMR was perfectly associated with the visual PFMR (κ = 0.900). CONCLUSIONS: The visual PFMRs upon sacral spinal nerve stimulation are direct efferent motor responses. A reopening of the discussion on the mechanism of action of SNM is possibly justified.

PURPOSE: To assess the validity, reliability, and feasibility of electromyography (EMG) as a tool to measure pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contractions during placement and (re)programming of the tined lead electrodes in sacral neuromodulation (SNM) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single tertiary center, prospective study conducted between 2017 and 2019 consisting of three protocols including a total of 75 patients with overactive bladder (wet/dry) or nonobstructive urinary retention. PFM EMG was recorded using the multiple array probe (MAPLe), placed intravaginally. All stimulations (monophasic pulsed square wave, 210 µsec, 14 Hz) were performed using Medtronic's standard SNM stimulation equipment. During lead implantation, all four lead electrodes were stimulated with fixed increasing stimulation intensities (1-2-3-5-7-10 V). During lead electrode (re)programming, five bipolar lead electrode configurations were stimulated twice up to when an electrical PFM motor response (EPFMR), sensory response, and pain response were noted (i.e., the threshold), respectively. Additionally, amplitude and latency of the EPFMRs were determined. Validity, reliability, and feasibility were statistically analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient, weighted Cohen's kappa and linear regression, respectively. RESULTS: Validity: EPFMRs were strongly associated with visually detected PFM motor responses (κ = 0.90). Reliability: EPFMR amplitude (ICC = 0.99) and latency (ICC = 0.93) showed excellent repeatability. Feasibility: linear regression (EPFMR threshold = 0.18 mA + 0.76 * sensory response threshold) showed an increase in the sensory response threshold is associated with a smaller increase in EPFMR threshold, with the EPFMR occurring before or on the sensory response threshold in 83.8% of all stimulations. CONCLUSIONS: Measuring PFM contractions with EMG during placement and (re)programming of lead electrodes in SNM patients is valid, reliable, and feasible. Therefore, the use of PFM EMG motor responses could be considered as a tool to assist in these procedures.

Plant carbon (C) partitioning-the relative use of photosynthates for biomass production, respiration, and other plant functions-is a key but poorly understood ecosystem process. In an experiment with Zea mays, with or without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), we investigated the effect of phosphorus (P) fertilization and AMF on plant C partitioning. Based on earlier studies, we expected C partitioning to biomass production (i.e., biomass production efficiency; BPE) to increase with increasing P addition due to reduced C partitioning to AMF. However, although plant growth was clearly stimulated by P addition, BPE did not increase. Instead, C partitioning to autotrophic respiration increased. These results contrasted with our expectations and with a previous experiment in the same set-up where P addition increased BPE while no effect on autotropic respiration was found. The comparison of both experiments suggests a key role for AMF in explaining these contrasts. Whereas in the previous experiment substantial C partitioning to AMF reduced BPE under low P, in the current experiment, C partitioning to AMF was too low to directly influence BPE. Our results illustrate the complex influence of nutrient availability and mycorrhizal symbiosis on plant C partitioning.

Cecropia species are traditionally used in Latin American folk medicine and are available as food supplements with little information warranting their quality. The optimum conditions for the extraction of chlorogenic acid (CA), total flavonoids (TF) and flavonolignans (FL) from leaves of Cecropia species were determined using a fractional factorial design (FFD) and a central composite design (CCD). A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method coupled to a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was validated for the quantification of CA, TF and FL, following the ICH guidelines. Quantitative and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was also performed. The extraction-optimization methodology enabled us developing an appropriate extraction process with a time-efficient execution of experiments. The experimental values agreed with those predicted, thus indicating suitability of the proposed model. The validation parameters for all chemical markers of the quantification method were satisfactory. The results revealed that the method had excellent selectivity, linearity, precision (repeatability and intermediate precision were below than 2 and 5%, respectively) and accuracy (98-102%). The limits of detection and quantification were at nanogram per milliliter (ng/mL) level. In conclusion, the simultaneous quantification of chemical markers using the proposed method is an appropriate approach for species discrimination and quality evaluation of Cecropia sp.

PURPOSE: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is an established minimally invasive therapy for functional disorders of the pelvic organs in which electrodes are stimulated in proximity of the sacral spinal nerves. Reprogramming of the electrodes is regularly required and is based on the sensory response. This study assesses the repeatability of a pelvic chart and grading system to enable a more objective assessment of the sensory response upon electrode stimulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 26 SNM patients, with OAB or NOUR, assessment of the sensory response was done using the sensory threshold (ST) and a pelvic chart with 1 cm2 coordinates, each coordinate corresponding with a dermatome and location of sensation (LoS). A grading system was developed based upon the ST and LoS. Repeatability of ST was assessed using a two-way mixed effects, absolute agreement, single rater/measurement intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and displayed using a correlation and Bland Altman plot. Repeatability of dermatomes, LoS, and grading system was assessed using kappa correlation coefficient. RESULTS: On average, 1.55 ± 0.85 coordinates were used to point out the area where the stimulation was perceived. The mean amount of coordinates between the area pointed at during the first and second measurement was 0.47 ± 0.74. ST showed excellent repeatability (ICC 0.93, 95%CI 0.90-0.94, P < 0.001). Dermatomes, LoS and grading system showed a substantial to almost perfect agreement (κ = 0.740-0.833, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The pelvic chart and grading system, using the sensory response upon electrode stimulation, are repeatable tools and can be used to assist in follow up and troubleshooting of SNM patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from chronic, subjective tinnitus are on a quest to find a cure or any form of alleviation for their persistent complaint. Current recommended therapy forms provide psychotherapeutic interventions that are intended to train the patient how to deal with the tinnitus sound. Pharmaceutical managements are used to reduce secondary effects of the tinnitus sound such as sleep deprivation, emotional and concentration difficulties, but these treatments do not cure the tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) significantly improves the quality of life for tinnitus patients. Furthermore, several studies have reported that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) relieves a substantial amount of distress by changing dysfunctional cognitions. However, when the tinnitus causes great interference with daily functioning, these treatment methods are not always sufficiently effective. Recent insights show that Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective therapy for medically unexplained symptoms such as chronic pain and phantom pain. In scientific research, tinnitus is compared to phantom limb pain. Starting from tinnitus as a phantom percept we therefore aim to demonstrate that the operating mechanisms of EMDR may also be an effective treatment method for patients with subjective tinnitus. The aim of this randomized controlled study with blind evaluator is to examine the effect of EMDR compared to CBT in chronic tinnitus patients. To our knowledge, there are no other studies that evaluate both methods simultaneously. METHODS/DESIGN: A total of 166 patients with subjective, chronic, non-pulsatile tinnitus will be randomized in two treatment groups: TRT + CBT versus TRT + EMDR. The experimental group will receive the bimodal therapy TRT/EMDR and the active control group will receive the bimodal therapy TRT/CBT. Evaluations will take place at baseline before therapy, at the end of the treatment and 3 months after therapy. The score on the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) will be used as the primary outcome measurement. Secondary outcome measurements are the Visual Analogue Scale of Loudness (VAS), Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ), psychoacoustic measurements and event-related potentials (ERP). DISCUSSION: The objective is to evaluate whether the bimodal therapy TRT and EMDR can provide faster and/or more relief from the annoyance experienced in chronic tinnitus patients' daily lives compared to the bimodal therapy TRT and CBT. So far there has been no prospective, randomized controlled, clinical trial with blind evaluator that compares CBT and EMDR as a treatment for tinnitus. BACKGROUND: Gloriosa superba L. (glory lily, Colchicaceae) contains colchicine, and related alkaloids such as 3-O-demethylcolchicine and its glycoside colchicoside. Previously the in vivo efficacy of a crude extract and a colchicine-poor / colchicoside-rich extract of G. superba seeds was shown in a murine model of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The efficacy can be improved without obvious signs of toxicity by increasing the treatment dose; the efficacy of gemcitabine can be improved by coadministration of a Gloriosa superba extract. STUDY DESIGN: A survival experiment was carried out in a murine model of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and the semi-long-term toxicity of both G. superba extracts was determined; a combination therapy with gemcitabine was evaluated. METHODS: A crude ethanolic extract (GS) and a colchicine-poor / colchicoside-rich extract (GS2B) were prepared, containing 3.22% colchicine, 2.52% colchicoside and 1.52% 3-O-demethylcolchicine (GS), and 0.07%, 2.26% and 0.46% (m/m) (GS2B). They were evaluated in a murine model of pancreatic adenocarcinoma at a dose of 4.5mg/kg (p.o., daily) total content of colchicine and derivatives during 3 weeks, or at 3.0mg/kg (p.o., daily) combined with gemcitabine (60mg/kg, i.p., 3x/week) during 54 days. RESULTS: A significant effect in tumour growth over time was observed for gemcitabine and the combination therapy compared to the control group. No significant difference was observed for the groups treated with colchicine and both extracts. However, combination therapy was significantly better than the monotherapy with gemcitabine. Moreover, survival analysis showed a significant prolongation of the survival of the groups treated with gemcitabine and the combination therapy. A slight difference in survival was observed between gemcitabine and the combination therapy, the latter one being slightly better. No significant prolongation of survival was observed for the extracts and colchicine compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Although a relevant tumour growth inhibition and a difference of relative tumour volume compared to the control group were observed on day 11, and a slightly longer survival was noticed for GS2B, the most important conclusion from this study is that the crude G. superba extract (GS) might have an added value combined with gemcitabine in the treatment of pancreatic tumours.

Withaferin A (WA) isolated from Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) has recently become an attractive phytochemical under investigation in various preclinical studies for treatment of different cancer types. In the present study, a comparative pathway-based transcriptome analysis was applied in epithelial-like MCF-7 and triple negative mesenchymal MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells exposed to different concentrations of WA which can be detected systemically in in vivo experiments. Whereas WA treatment demonstrated attenuation of multiple cancer hallmarks, the withanolide analogue Withanone (WN) did not exert any of the described effects at comparable concentrations. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that WA targets specific cancer processes related to cell death, cell cycle and proliferation, which could be functionally validated by flow cytometry and real-time cell proliferation assays. WA also strongly decreased MDA-MB-231 invasion as determined by single-cell collagen invasion assay. This was further supported by decreased gene expression of extracellular matrix-degrading proteases (uPA, PLAT, ADAM8), cell adhesion molecules (integrins, laminins), pro-inflammatory mediators of the metastasis-promoting tumor microenvironment (TNFSF12, IL6, ANGPTL2, CSF1R) and concomitant increased expression of the validated breast cancer metastasis suppressor gene (BRMS1). In line with the transcriptional changes, nanomolar concentrations of WA significantly decreased protein levels and corresponding activity of uPA in MDA-MB-231 cell supernatant, further supporting its anti-metastatic properties. Finally, hierarchical clustering analysis of 84 chromatin writer-reader-eraser enzymes revealed that WA treatment of invasive mesenchymal MDA-MB-231 cells reprogrammed their transcription levels more similarly towards the pattern observed in non-invasive MCF-7 cells. In conclusion, taking into account that sub-cytotoxic concentrations of WA target multiple metastatic effectors in therapy-resistant triple negative breast cancer, WA-based therapeutic strategies targeting the uPA pathway hold promise for further (pre)clinical development to defeat aggressive metastatic breast cancer.

RESUMO

Over the past decade a neurodevelopmental animal model with high validity for schizophrenia has been developed based on the environmental risk factor known as maternal immune activation (MIA). The immunological basis of this model, together with extensive data from clinical and preclinical context, suggests the involvement of an aberrant neuro-immune system in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The goal of this study was to examine microglia activation in adult behaviourally phenotyped MIA offspring. MIA was induced in pregnant rats using viral mimetic Poly I:C at gestational day 15. Adult offspring were behaviourally phenotyped at postnatal days (PND) 56, 90 and 180 through the evaluation of prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle and spontaneous locomotion. Finally, the presence of activated microglia in brain regions associated with schizophrenia was evaluated using post-mortem immunohistochemistry against OX-42 (CD11b) and ED-1 (CD68). Although a deficit in PPI could not be replicated despite the high number of animals tested, we found an overall decrease in basal startle response and spontaneous locomotion in offspring born to Poly I:C- compared to saline-treated dams, accompanied by increased microglial density with characteristics of non-reactive activation in the chronic stage of the model. These findings provide additional evidence for a role played by microglial activation in schizophrenia-related pathology in general and psychomotor slowing in particular, and warrant extensive research on the underlying mechanism in order to establish new drug targets for the treatment of schizophrenia patients with an inflammatory component.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The isolation of D-pinitol (or 3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol) from an aqueous decoction of Desmodium adscendens (Fabaceae) leaves and twigs is reported. The protective and curative effect of this decoction, in which d-pinitol was quantified, and of pure D-pinitol, against chemically-induced liver damage in rats has been evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enzyme levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which are among the usual biomarkers for liver damage, were determined in serum samples of experimental animals. The protective effects against D-galactosamine-induced and ethanol-induced liver damage of a decoction of D. adscendens, quantified on its main constituent D-pinitol, was investigated in rats. In addition, the curative effects of pure D-pinitol and D. adscendens against chronic D-galactosamine-induced and acute acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats was studied. Silymarin was used as positive control. RESULTS: In a first experiment evaluating the protective effect against acute D-galactosamine-induced liver damage in rats, a significant decrease of AST and ALT was observed for the D. adscendens decoction at a dose equivalent to 5 mg/kg/day and 20 mg/kg/day D-pinitol, as well as 20 mg/kg/day pure D-pinitol. With respect to chronic ethanol-induced liver damage in rats, the protective effects of D. adscendens at doses equivalent to 2 mg/kg/day and 10 mg/kg/day D-pinitol, were not observed for serum AST and ALT levels. However, with respect to reduced mortality of animals, statistical analysis showed a trend towards significance for the Desmodium group receiving a dose equivalent to 10 mg/kg/day D-pinitol, versus the untreated hepatotoxic animals. Additional experiments in rat models of acute acetaminophen-induced and chronic D-galactosamine-induced liver damage indicated that D. adscendens decoction and pure D-pinitol had no curative effect when given in a dose equivalent to 10 mg/kg/day D-pinitol, or up to 20 mg/kg/day as a pure compound daily, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The aqueous decoction of D. adscendens showed a protective effect in rats against liver damage induced by D-galactosamine and ethanol, and this effect is at least in part due to the presence of D-pinitol. However, no curative effect of D. adscendens decoction or D-pinitol on liver damage induced by the tested chemicals could be demonstrated.

This study describes the heritability of audiometric shape parameters and the familial aggregation of different types of presbycusis in a healthy, otologically screened population between 50 and 75 years old. About 342 siblings of 64 families (average family-size: 5.3) were recruited through population registries. Audiometric shape was mathematically quantified by objective parameters developed to measure size, slope, concavity, percentage of frequency-dependent and frequency-independent hearing loss and Bulge Depth. The heritability of each parameter was calculated using a variance components model. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs). Estimates of sibling recurrence risk ratios (lambda(s)) are also provided. Heritability estimates were generally higher compared to previous studies. ORs and lambda(s) for the parameters Total Hearing Loss (size), Uniform Hearing Loss (percentage of frequency-dependent hearing loss) and Bulge Depth suggest a higher heredity for severe types of presbycusis compared to moderate or mild types. Our results suggest that the separation of the parameter 'Total Hearing Loss' into the two parameters 'Uniform Hearing Loss' and 'Non-uniform Hearing Loss' could lead to the discovery of different genetic subtypes of presbycusis. The parameter 'Bulge Depth', instead of 'Concavity', seemed to be an important parameter for classifying subjects into 'susceptible' or 'resistant' to societal or intensive environmental exposure.

To study the effect of genetic background on the Fmr1 knockout mutation in mice, we compared the acoustic startle response (ASR) of male fragile X knockout mice bred in three different genetic backgrounds, including C57BL/6J (C57BL/6J x 129P2/OlaHsd) F1 and F2 intercross. ASR is used as a behavioural tool to assess the neuronal basis of behavioural plasticity. For each background studied, fragile X knockouts clearly differed in ASR from their control littermates. C57BL/6J knockouts showed an increase in ASR in response to the lowest stimulus of 90 dB and a decrease in ASR in response to the highest stimulus of 110 dB when compared with control mice, whereas knockouts of the F1 generation showed significantly lower ASRs for all the three stimulus intensities used when compared with control littermates. These data demonstrate that the expression of the fragile X phenotype in ASR of fragile X knockout mice may be influenced by the presence of 129 genes in the genetic background and that modifier genes may influence the fragile X phenotype. Surprisingly, and in contrast with knockouts of the F1 generation that showed a decreased ASR, knockouts of the F2 generation showed a significantly increased ASR compared with their control littermates. This is especially remarkable as both F1 and F2 mice consist of 50% of the genetic material from each of the parental strains C57BL/6J and 129P2/OlaHsd strain. Thus, the different distribution of the genetic background seems to be responsible for the difference in ASR between F1 and F2. This opposite ASR in the F1 and F2 generations is unique in behavioural studies and has, to our knowledge, not been previously reported.
