RESUMO

Most combat sports (CS) are structured in weight categories, and it is very common to carry out body weight adjustment strategies in order to compete in lower weight categories. For this reason, different rapid weight loss (RWL) strategies are usually performed to pass the pre-competition weigh-in test, and then a replenishment of fluids and carbohydrate-rich foods is conducted in an attempt to recover the weight and avoid a performance loss. In this context, no clear references have been found on whether these types of strategies have negative effects, impairing the athlete's combat and/or physical performance. For this reason, the aim of this study was to review the scientific literature on the effect of rapid weight reduction strategies on the performance of CS athletes. A literature search was performed through four different databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and ScienceDirect). Four inclusion criteria were established as follows: (1) the subjects had to be competitors in the CS and carry out RWL strategies; (2) at least two measurement points, that is, normal conditions and dehydration condition; (3) measurements in a real competition or simulating the same conditions; (4) original research articles written in English or Spanish and available in full text. Finally, a total of 16 articles were finally included in this research. All subjects (n = 184) were athletes from combat disciplines, with a minimum of 3-4 years of practice, as well as with certain experience in RWL. Six of the studies reported that an RWL strategy of around 5% of body weight loss did not affect performance parameters. However, the other ten studies with RWL between 3 and 6% or even higher reported negative effects or impairments on different parameters related to performance and/or athlete's psychophysiology, such as perceived fatigue, mood states, strength and power production, as well as changes in hormonal, blood and urine parameters, body composition, or the kinematics of the technical gesture. Although there is still no clear answer to the issue approached in this research, in general terms, it seems that in order to guarantee an acceptable athletic performance of the competitor, the weight loss should not exceed 3% to ≤5% of body weight together with ≥24 h for adequate (or at least partial) recovery and rehydration processes. In addition, it is highly recommended to lose weight progressively over several weeks, especially focusing on competitions lasting several days, as well as multiple rounds or qualifying stages.

RESUMO

Sarcopenia is a multifactorial condition related to the loss of muscle mass and strength due to aging, eating habits, physical inactivity, or even caused by another disease. Affected individuals have a higher risk of falls and may be associated with heart disease, respiratory diseases, cognitive impairment, and consequently an increased risk of hospitalization, in addition to causing an economic impact due to the high cost of care during the stay in hospitals. The standardization of appropriate treatment for patients with sarcopenia that could help reduce pathology-related morbidity is necessary. For these reasons, this study aimed to perform a systematic review of the role of nutrition and drugs that could ameliorate the health and quality of life of sarcopenic patients and PRISMA guidelines were followed. Lifestyle interventions have shown a profound impact on sarcopenia treatment but using supplements and different drugs can also impact skeletal muscle maintenance. Creatine, leucine, branched-chain amino acids, omega 3, and vitamin D can show benefits. Although with controversial results, medications such as Metformin, GLP-1, losartan, statin, growth hormone, and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors have also been considered and can alter the sarcopenic's metabolic parameters, protect against cardiovascular diseases and outcomes, while protecting muscles.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze midwives' employment situation of midwives and detect their workload measurement needs. METHODS: a mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative), observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Two phases were carried out. The first methodological phase consisted of conducting semi-structured individual interviews. The second methodological phase analyzed the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) interventions that midwives perform in the labor room during daily practice. RESULTS: 90.3% of midwives have work overload, since for 80.6% the midwife-pregnant mother ratio is not well established, since the mean execution time of a Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) intervention is 20 minutes. For this reason, 100% of the sample considers the development of workload measurement tools to be highly useful. CONCLUSIONS: the need to generate an instrument that considers the diversity of Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) interventions that develop within the labor room is ratified.

RESUMO

Front-of-package warning label (FOPWL) policies incentivize the food industry to reduce the content of regulated nutrients in products. We explored changes in the content of nutrients of concern (sugar, saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium) and the percentage of products in the Peruvian food supply that would carry a FOPWL before and after Peru's implementation of FOPWLs. Longitudinal data on the top-selling foods and beverages (n = 94) were collected at three time points: three months before the implementation of the policy, four months after, and two years after. Using the nutritional information declared on products' labels, we compared quantities of nutrients of concern and the percentage of foods that would carry a FOPWL at each time point. Between the first and the third data collection, a decrease in the median sugar content of beverages was observed (from 9.0 to 5.9 g/100 mL, p = 0.005), accompanied by an increase in the use of nonnutritive sweeteners. This change drove the reduction of the percentage of beverages that would carry a FOPWL (from 59 to 31%, p = 0.011). Among foods, decreases were observed in saturated fat (from 6.7 to 5.9 g/100 g, p = 0.002). The percentage of foods that would carry a FOPWL according to their nutritional profile declined from before to after implementation of the policy (from 82 to 62%, p < 0.001). The study shows that the industry reformulated products in Peru after implementation of its FOPWL policy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autotransfusion (AT) in trauma laparotomy is limited by concern that enteric contamination (EC) increases complications, including infections. Our goal was to determine if AT use increases complications in trauma patients undergoing laparotomy with EC. METHODS: Trauma patients undergoing laparotomy from October 2011-November 2020 were reviewed. Patients were excluded if they did not receive blood in the operating room, did not have a full thickness hollow viscus injury, or died <24 h from admission. AT and non-AT patients were matched. Outcomes were compared. RESULTS: 185 patients were included, 60 received AT, and 46 pairs were matched. After matching, demographics were similar. No differences were noted in septic complications (33 vs 41%, p = 0.39), overall complications (59% vs 54%, p = 0.67), or mortality (13 vs 6%, p = 0.29). CONCLUSIONS: AT use in contaminated trauma laparotomy fields was not associated with a higher rate of complications.

RESUMO

A food tradition not only corresponds to the vital need to be nourished every day, but is part of the particularity of a territory as a consequence of its history, traditions, natural heritage, and capacity for ecological and social resilience. In the search for culinary identity, a valorization of a rural territory of high identity potential is carried out, such as in the environmental protection area "Sierra Grande de Hornachos" (Extremadura, Spain), and specifically the town of Hornachos. For this purpose, a series of workshops and interviews were held for men and women who had lived most of their lives in Hornachos and who were older than 70. Information on the food uses of wild and cultivated plants, as determined by the Cultural Significance Index (CSI) for 79 species, was extracted from the interpretation of the data collected. In addition, new uses were collected in Extremadura for 16 plants and in Spain for 3, with some of these data being of particular significance in the culinary culture of Hornachega. We conclude that the area "Sierra Grande de Hornachos" forms an environment of great culinary identity that must be preserved, not only for its heritage interests but also for its agroecological ones, which could be translated into measures of wealth creation and development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This analysis examined whether specific social, physical, and financial factors were associated with diet quality among older, community-dwelling women. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis was conducted in a subset of 6,094 community-dwelling Women's Health Initiative participants who completed a food frequency questionnaire, administered from 2012 to 2013, and a self-administered supplemental questionnaire, administered approximately 1 year later. The supplemental questionnaire included five questions assessing social, physical, and financial factors related to eating. Diet quality was assessed with the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010; range of 0-100; higher score indicates a higher quality diet). The total HEI-2010 score was calculated by summing individual scores representing the intake of nine adequacy components (beneficial food groups) and three moderation components (food groups to limit). Associations of responses to the five questions on the supplemental questionnaire with HEI-2010 scores were examined with multiple linear regression, adjusting for relevant covariates. RESULTS: Mean ±â€Šstandard deviation age of participants was 78.8 ±â€Š6.7 years. Reporting eating fewer than two meals per day, having dental or other mouth problems causing problems with eating, and not always being able to shop, cook, or feed oneself were associated with statistically significantly lower HEI-2010 scores, compared with those not reporting these issues, after multivariable adjustment: 5.37, 2.98, and 2.39 lower scores, respectively (all P values <0.0001). Reporting eating alone most of the time and not always having enough money to buy food were not associated with HEI-2010 scores. CONCLUSIONS: Among older, community-dwelling women, eating fewer than two meals per day, dental and other mouth problems, and diminished ability to shop for food, prepare meals, and feed oneself were associated with lower diet quality. These are potential targets for interventions to improve diet quality in older women. : Video Summary:http://links.lww.com/MENO/A561.

RESUMO

Ugni molinae Turcz. is a native shrub of Chile, known for its edible berries and its leaves, which have been the focus of recent attention, as a good source of phenolic compounds to be used in cosmetics and food products. The aim of this study was to assess the differences in the phenolic composition and antioxidant capacity of the ethanolic extracts from the leaves of 10 genotypes of U. molinae, that were cultivated under the same soil, climate and agronomical management. Antioxidant activity was assessed by complementary methods (ORAC-Fl, FRAP and DPPH assay), phenolic composition of each extract was analyzed by LC-MS. Phenolic and flavonoid total contents were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods. Significative differences were found by these methods, and ellagitannins, gallic acid derivatives and flavonols were identified as responsible for these differences, showing the influence of the genotype on the phenolic composition of U. molinae leaves.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare mortality, nonfatal coronary heart disease (CHD), and congestive heart failure (CHF) risk across BMI categories in white, African American, and Hispanic women, with a focus on severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40), and examine heterogeneity in weight-related CHD risk. METHODS: Among 156,775 Women's Health Initiative observational study and clinical trial participants (September 1993-12 September 2005), multivariable Cox models estimated relative risk for mortality, CHD, and CHF. CHD incidence was calculated by anthropometry, race, and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF). RESULTS: Mortality, nonfatal CHD, and CHF incidence generally rose with BMI category. For severe obesity versus normal BMI, hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence interval) for mortality were 1.97 (1.77-2.20) in white, 1.55 (1.20-2.00) in African American, and 2.59 (1.55-4.31) in Hispanic women; for CHD, HRs were 2.05 (1.80-2.35), 2.24 (1.57-3.19), and 2.95 (1.60-5.41) respectively; for CHF, HRs were 5.01 (4.33-5.80), 3.60 (2.30-5.62), and 6.05 (2.49-14.69). CVRF variation resulted in substantial variation in CHD rates across BMI categories, even in severe obesity. CHD incidence was similar by race/ethnicity when differences in BMI or CVRF were accounted for. CONCLUSIONS: Severe obesity increases mortality, nonfatal CHD, and CHF risk in women of diverse race/ethnicity. CVRF heterogeneity contributes to variation in CHD incidence even in severe obesity.

Introduction: Several studies have demonstrated the importance of feeding in the development of cancer, it is estimated that up to 40 por ciento of the tumors could be prevented through proper diet and healthy lifestyles. Some epidemiological studies suggest that the mother's diet during pregnancy can influence the subsequent risk of childhood cancer in children, increasing it (high consumption of animal fat, cured meat, smoked or grilled roast, alcohol and little or no vegetable intake) or reducing (high intake of cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits and antioxidant supplements). Objectives: To determine the relationship between cancer and previous diet school in patients hospitalized pediatric service of the National Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins. Lima-Peru. Design: Quantitative observational, analytic study case-control. Location: Service of Pediatrics, National Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins. Participants: The sample consisted of 20 cases and 20 controls service and Pediatric Hematology Oncology, respectively. Interventions: Application of a questionnaire to mothers in the sample unit to determine the frequency of potentially carcinogenic food consumption and dietary supplements during the preconception stage, gestational stage and the first 5 years of the child. Results: No statistically significant relationship was found between disease and diet pediatric cancer prior by applying the chi-square test (x2) (p=0.448). We obtained an average score of the three stages evaluated, gaining 30.53 points (SD±5.72) for the case group, while the control group was 26.85 points (SD±8.14), and both scores considered within the range of a level of average risk for the presence of cancer. Conclusions: The previous diet of scholar patients hospitalized in the pediatric service of the National Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins does not have a cause-effect with the presence of pediatric cancer disease. However, there is a tendency of a medium risk level by...

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: In prepubertal mice, subcutaneous thymulin injection before equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) treatment simulates ovulation; seemingly, the thymulin could be acting at the hypothalamus-pituitary axis level. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to analyze the effects of injecting thymulin into the hypothalamus or pituitary on induced ovulation of prepubertal mice. METHOD: Female mice, 19 days old, were anesthetized with ether and injected with saline solution or thymulin into the anterior or medial hypothalamus or the pituitary and treated with eCG when 20 days old. The ova shed were counted and serum concentrations of 17beta-estradiol were measured. In the ovaries, the morphometrical analysis was performed and the atresia evaluated. RESULTS: Ether anesthesia treatment blocked eCG-induced ovulation in almost all animals. Mice anesthetized and treated with eCG and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) ovulated a full quota of ova. Injecting saline solution into the anterior or medial hypothalamus or the pituitary did not reduce the blocking effects of ether anesthesia on induced ovulation, but the incidence of atretic follicles was higher. Injecting thymulin directly into the anterior hypothalamus did not restore ovulation, nor diminish the number of atretic follicles. In contrast, injecting thymulin into the medial hypothalamus restored the ovulation ratio and decreased the percentage of atretic follicles. Similar results were obtained by injecting thymulin into the pituitary, though thymulin treatment in the pituitary resulted in a higher number of ova shed and lower follicular atresia. CONCLUSION: The present results suggest that thymulin acts at the medial hypothalamus level, facilitating the release of GnRH and at the pituitary level regulating gonadotrophin release.
