OBJECTIVES: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Fengfu" (GV16), "Taichong" (LR3) and "Zusanli" (ST36) on α-synuclein (α-syn), Occludin, Claudin-1, thioredoxin interaction protein (TXNIP) and Nod-like receptor 3 (NLRP3) in Parkinson's disease (PD) mice, so as to investigate the mechanisms of EA on intestinal barrier function and inflammation in PD mice. METHODS: Thirty six C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control, model and EA groups, with 12 mice in each group. PD mice model was induced by rotenone intragastric administration for 28 days. Mice in the EA group were treated with EA (2 Hz, 1 mA) at GV16, LR3 and ST36 for 30 min, once a day for 14 days. The behavioral scores were observed. The total distance of autonomic movement was measured by open field test. The expression level of α-syn in substantia nigra and colon tissue was determined by immunohistochemistry. The colonic morphology and goblet cell distribution were observed by Alcian blue staining. The expression levels of Occludin, Claudin-1, TXNIP and NLRP3 mRNA in colon tissue were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the behavioral scores of rats were increased (P<0.01);the total distance of autonomous movement was decreased (P<0.01);the positive expression level of α-syn in the substantia nigra and colon was increased (P<0.01);the goblet cells and crypts in colon tissue were reduced, and the muscular layer was thinner;the expression levels of Occludin and Claudin-1 mRNAs in colon tissue were decreased (P<0.01) while TXNIP and NLRP3 mRNAs were increased (P<0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, the surface villi of colon tissue was more complete, the goblet cells and crypts were increased, and the muscular layer was thickened;the other indexes were reversed (P<0.01, P<0.05) in the EA group. CONCLUSIONS: EA at GV16, LR3 and ST36 can reduce the abnormal accumulation of α-syn in the substania nigra and colon tissue of PD mice, alleviate the damage of intestinal barrier, regulate TXNIP/NLRP3 signaling pathway, so as to delay the occurrence and development of PD.

Hyperplasia of mammary glands is a benign breast disease with disordered breast structure. Nowadays, the incidence rate of breast hyperplasia in women is increasing year by year, and the etiology is related to the imbalance of estrogen and progesterone in the body. The symptoms include breast pain, breast nodules, or nipple discharge, which can develop into breast cancer in the context of psychological pressure. Therefore, it is timely and effectively necessary for people to treat the symptoms. At present, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) often treats breast hyperplasia by oral drug, external application, acupuncture, moxibustion, and massage, while western medicine often uses hormone therapy or surgery. TCM can regulate hormone levels to treat breast hyperplasia. Acupuncture, moxibustion, and other methods can stimulate acupoints to reduce breast lumps. However, since TCM is easy to produce hepatorenal toxicity after long-term use and simple external treatment is slow to take effect, rapid and effective treatment is difficult to be achieved. Although western medicine can inhibit the disease, it is easy to produce toxic and side effects if taken for a long time. In addition, surgery can only remove the focus and the recurrence rate is high. Some studies have found that the combination of oral and external use of TCM compounds has a significant effect, with mild toxic and side effects, few adverse reactions, and a low recurrence rate. Based on the relevant literature in recent years, this article reviewed the combination of oral and external treatment of TCM in the treatment of hyperplasia of mammary glands, discussed the effectiveness, clinical evaluation indexes, and mechanism, and pointed out the existing shortcomings to explore a comprehensive therapy worthy of clinical application.

BACKGROUND: New drugs are urgently needed for the treatment of liver cancer, a feat that could be feasibly accomplished by finding new therapeutic purposes for marketed drugs to save time and costs. As a new class of national anti-infective drugs, carrimycin (CAM) has strong activity against gram-positive bacteria and no cross resistance with similar drugs. Studies have shown that the components of CAM have anticancer effects. AIM: To obtain a deeper understanding of CAM, its distribution, metabolism and anti-inflammatory effects were assessed in the organs of mice, and its mechanism of action against liver cancer was predicted by a network pharmacology method. METHODS: In this paper, the content of isovaleryl spiramycin III was used as an index to assess the distribution and metabolism of CAM and its effect on inflammatory factors in various mouse tissues and organs. Reverse molecular docking technology was utilized to determine the target of CAM, identify each target protein based on disease type, and establish a target protein-disease type network to ascertain the effect of CAM in liver cancer. Then, the key action targets of CAM in liver cancer were screened by a network pharmacology method, and the core targets were verified by molecular docking and visual analyses. RESULTS: The maximum CAM concentration was reached in the liver, kidney, lung and spleen 2.5 h after intragastric administration. In the intestine, the maximum drug concentration was reached 0.5 h after administration. In addition, CAM significantly reduced the interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels in the lung and kidney and especially the liver and spleen; moreover, CAM significantly reduced the IL-1ß levels in the spleen, liver, and kidney and particularly the small intestine and lung. CAM is predicted to regulate related pathways by acting on many targets, such as albumin, estrogen receptor 1, epidermal growth factor receptor and caspase 3, to treat cancer, inflammation and other diseases. CONCLUSION: We determined that CAM inhibited inflammation. We also predicted the complex multitargeted effects of CAM that involve multiple pathways and the diversity of these effects in the treatment of liver cancer, which provides a basis and direction for further clinical research.

Previous studies investigated the age-related positivity effect in terms of emotion perception and management, whereas little is known about whether the positivity effect is shown in emotion utilization (EU). If yes, the EU-related intrinsic functional connectivity and its age-associated alterations remain to be elucidated. In this study, we collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 62 healthy older adults and 72 undergraduates as well as their self-ratings of EU. By using the connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) method, we constructed a predictive model of the positive relationship between EU self-ratings and resting-state functional connectivity. Lesion simulation analyses revealed that the medial-frontal network, default mode network, frontoparietal network, and subcortical regions played key roles in the EU-related CPM. Older subjects showed significantly higher EU self-ratings than undergraduates, which was associated with strengthened connectivity between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and bilateral frontal poles, and between the left frontal pole and thalamus. A mediation analysis indicated that the age-related EU network mediated the age effect on EU self-ratings. Our findings extend previous research on the age-related "positivity effect" to the EU domain, suggesting that the positivity effect on the self-evaluation of EU is probably associated with emotion knowledge which accumulates with age.

Context: Spleen-stomach vacuity cold is the primary TCM pattern for epigastric pain, accounting for 75% of the patients. According to the TCM theory of treating both the tip and the root, epigastric pain requires the caregiver to dissipate cold and relieve pain, the treatments for the tip, which warm and supplement the spleen and stomach, the treatments for the root. Objective: This study aimed to explore effectiveness of traditional Chinese nursing care using fennel mixed with coarse salt for ironing,with umbilical moxibustion, for epigastric pain, with a pattern of spleen-stomach vacuity cold. Design: The research team designed a randomized control trial (RCT). Setting: The study was conducted at Ruikang Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine in the capital city of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in the People's Republic of China. Participants: Participants were 96 patients who had been admitted to the hospital between October and November 2020 with epigastric pain resulting from the TCM spleen-stomach vacuity cold pattern, equivalent to chronic atrophic gastritis in Western medicine. Intervention: The research team randomly divided participants into an intervention group (n = 48) and a control group (n = 48) using a random digits table. The intervention group received fennel mixed with coarse salt for ironing, combined with umbilical moxibustion, whereas the control group received routine care. Outcome Measures: The study's instruments included the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Syndrome Score Scale (TCMSSS), Medical Outcome Study (MOS) Short Form 36 (SF-36), and Satisfaction with TCM Nursing Program (STCMNP). Data were collected and analyzed through descriptive statistics a Chi-square test and independent t test. A significance level of P < .05 was accepted for all statistical analyses. Results: The intervention group had mean scores that indicated significantly higher decreases in epigastric pain, and increases in quality of life and level of satisfaction with the traditional Chinese nursing care than the control group did (P < .05). Conclusions: The traditional Chinese nursing care was able to improve epigastric pain, enhance quality of life, and increase satisfaction with the traditional Chinese nursing care.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Fengfu"(GV16), "Taichong"(LR3), and "Zusanli"(ST36) on the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), interleukin (IL)-6, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) in mice with Parkinson's disease (PD), and to explore the underlying mechanism of EA in the treatment of PD. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control, model, and EA groups, with 10 mice in each group. The PD model was induced by rotenone (i.g.) in mice for 28 d. EA was applied to GV16, LR3 and ST36 of mice in the EA group for 30 min, once daily for 14 d. The behavioral changes of mice in each group before and after treatment were observed and scored. The total distance traveled autonomously of mice was detected in the open field test. TH expression in the substantia nigra (SN) was measured by immunohistochemistry, and the changes in colon tissue structure were observed by HE staining. The intestinal mRNA expression of ZO-1, NF-κB, and IL-6 was detected by quantitative real-time PCR, and the colon tissue protein expression of NF-κB was detected by Western blot. The colon tissue concentration of IL-6 was detected by ELISA. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the pre- and post-treatment behavioral scores of the model group and the pre-treatment behavioral score of the EA group were increased (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the EA group showed reduced behavioral score after treatment (P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the model group showed reduced goblet cells and crypts and thinner muscle layer in the intestinal specimens of mice. Compared with the model group, the EA group showed intact surface villi, increased goblet cells and crypts, and thickened muscle layer. Compared with the control group, the model group exhibited reduced total distance traveled in the open field test, TH expression in SN, and ZO-1 mRNA expression (P<0.01), and elevated mRNA and protein expression of NF-κB and IL-6, and the ratio of p-NF-κB/NF-κB in the intestinal tract (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the EA group displayed increased total distance traveled, TH expression in SN, and ZO-1 mRNA expression (P<0.01), and declining mRNA and protein expression of NF-κB and IL-6, and the ratio of p-NF-κB/NF-κB in the colon tissue (P<0.01, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA at GV16, LR3, and ST36 can regulate the expression of NF-κB/IL-6, inhibit the transmission of the colon tissue inflammatory response, repair the intestinal barrier function, and potentiate the TH activity, thereby improving the behavioral performance of PD mice.

The dry root and rhizome of Panax ginseng C. A. Mey has garnered much interest owing to its medicinal properties against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In this study, an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS)-based metabolomics approach was used to illustrate the therapeutic mechanisms of ginseng extract on the serum and urinary metabolic profiles in streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) rats. Pharmacological and renal parameters in response to the administration of ginseng were also evaluated. In total, 16 serum endogenous metabolites and 14 urine endogenous metabolites, including pyruvic acid, indoleacetic acid, and phenylacetylglycine, were identified as potential biomarkers for diabetes. Pathway enrichment and network analysis revealed that the biomarkers modulated by ginseng were primarily involved in phenylalanine and pyruvate metabolism, as well as in arginine biosynthesis. Moreover, the levels of several renal injury-related biomarkers in T1DM rats were significantly restored following treatment with ginseng. The administration of the extract helped maintain tissue structure integrity and ameliorated renal injury. The findings suggest that the regulatory effect of ginseng extract on T1DM involves metabolic management of diabetic rats, which subsequently attenuates T1DM-induced early renal dysfunction.

A complementary copper-catalyzed and electrochemical aminosulfonylation of O-homoallyl benzimidates and N-alkenyl amidines with sodium sulfinates was developed. The terminal alkene substrate produced sulfone-containing 1,3-oxazines and tetrahydropyrimidines in the presence of Cu(OAc)2, Ag2CO3, and DPP, and under similar reaction conditions, sulfonylated tetrahydro-1,3-oxazepines were prepared from 1-aryl-substituted O-homoallyl benzimidates in moderate to good yields. For certain electron-rich 1,1-diaryl-substituted alkene substrates, the corresponding tetrahydro-1,3-oxazepines could also be obtained in similar or even higher yields via a green electrochemical technique.

BACKGROUND: Metatarsalgia refers to localized or generalized forefoot pain in the region of the metatarsal heads. Often this pain is plantar, beneath the metatarsal heads, and arises from either mechanical or iatrogenic causes. The treatment of metatarsalgia remains controversial. A thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the forefoot and the underlying pathology of the particular type of metatarsalgia affecting the patient is a prerequisite to selecting the proper treatment. In recent years, massage therapy has been increasingly accepted by patients due to its lower costs, fewer unwanted side effects, and safety for clinical use. In this systematic review, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of massage therapy for patients with metatarsal pain. METHODS: We will search the following electronic databases for randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of massage therapy in treating metatarsal pain: Wanfang and PubMed Database, CNKI, CENTRAL, CINAHL, and EMBASE. Each database will be searched from inception to October 2020. The entire process will include study selection, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and meta-analyses. RESULTS: This proposed study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of massage therapy for patients with metatarsal pain. The outcomes will include changes in metatarsal pain relief and adverse effect. CONCLUSIONS: This proposed systematic review will evaluate the existing evidence on the effectiveness and safety of massage therapy for patients with metatarsalgia. DISSEMINATION AND ETHICS: The results of this review will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication. Because all of the data used in this systematic review and meta-analysis has been published, this review does not require ethical approval. "Social mindfulness" refers to being thoughtful of others and considering their needs before making decisions, and can be characterized by low-cost and subtle gestures. The present study compared the behavioral and neural responses triggered by observing others' socially mindful/unmindful choices and how these responses were modulated by the social status of the agency. At the behavioral level, observing socially mindful choices made observers feel better, rate the actors as more likable, and behave more cooperatively than did observing socially unmindful choices. Analysis of event-related potentials in the brain revealed that compared with socially unmindful choices, mindful choices elicited more negative feedback-related negativity (FRN). Notably, while this effect of social mindfulness was only significant when the actor's social status was medium and high, it was undetectable when the actor's social status was low. These results demonstrate that the social mindfulness of others can be rapidly detected and processed, as reflected by FRN, even though it does not seem to receive further, more elaborate evaluation. These findings indicated that low-cost cooperative behaviors such as social mindfulness can also be detected and appreciated by our brain, which may result in better mood and more cooperative behaviors in the perceivers. Besides, the perception of social mindfulness is sensitive to important social information, such as social status.

Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, as a traditional Chinese medicine, has great potential for development. However, the identification and quality control system is not perfect, leading to the market chaos and chronic slow growth in deep processing of Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum. This paper gives an overview of present situation in identification and quality control system of the Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, and analyzes present problems. Based on these results, the feasibility study scheme in identification and quality control system for Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum would be then put forward, providing ideas to establish its comprehensive evaluation system.

Catalpol, a natural active ingredient extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine, was verified exhibiting beneficial effects on neural differentiation compared with commonly used chemical inducers by our previous studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of catalpol-loaded scaffold on guiding neuronal differentiation of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hASCs). Fabrication technique of catalpol loading into the electrospun poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silk fibroin nanofibrous scaffolds was successfully established. The topographical and mechanical properties of the nanofibers scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and tensile instrument, respectively. In vitro catalpol release was studied in phosphate-buffered solution at 37 °C. Immunnocytochemistry, RT-PCR, and western blot assays were performed to estimate hASCs neuronal differentiation, and it was shown that catalpol has significantly upregulated the expressions of ßIII-tubulin and Nissl. Our experiments demonstrated that catalpol, as a traditional Chinese medicine extract, could be encapsulated into composite nanofibers and induce differentiation of hASCs into neural-like cells, which might offer new avenues in nerve regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Tangshenkang Granule (TG) containing serum on renal mesangial cells' (RMCs) proliferation and TGF-ß1/Smad2/3 pathway in the high glucose condition. METHODS: Twelve SD rats were randomly divided into four groups, i.e., the low dose TG group, the middle dose TG group, the high dose TG group, and the blank control group, 3 in each group. After 7-day gastrogavage via portal vein blood, rats were sacrificed and their serum samples were collected. RMCs were cultured in common rat serum and TG containing serum respectively. The proliferation of mesangial cells was determined by methly thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay to determine the optimal TG containing serum concentration. Expression levels of TGF-ß1 mRNA and protein were determined by real time quantitative PCR and ELISA. Smad2/3 protein expression and phosphorylation were determined by Western blot and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: TG containing serum at different doses could inhibit high glucose induced RMC cells' proliferation, TGF-ß1 over-expression and Smad2/3 phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: TG containing serum could inhibit high glucose induced RMC cells' proliferation, and its mechanism might be possibly associated with inhibiting TGF-ß1/Smad2/3 signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate functional abnormalities of the brain in females with migraine using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a finger-tapping task. METHODS: Twenty-nine female patients with migraine (aged 16-40years) and age- and gender-matched healthy controls were studied with an MEG system at a sampling rate of 6000Hz. MEG recordings were performed during an attack in migraineurs with and without aura. Neuromagnetic brain activation was elicited by a finger-tapping task. The latency and amplitude of neuromagnetic responses were analyzed with averaged waveforms in the frequency range of 5-100Hz. The Morlet wavelet and beamformers were used to analyze the spectral and spatial signatures of MEG data from subjects in two frequency ranges of 5-100 and 100-1000Hz. RESULTS: The latency of motor-evoked magnetic fields evoked by finger movement was significantly prolonged in migraineurs as compared with controls. Neuromagnetic spectral power in the motor cortex in migraineurs was significantly elevated. There were significantly higher odds of activation in 5-30, 100-300 and 500-700Hz frequency ranges in the ipsilateral primary motor cortices and the supplementary motor area in migraineurs as compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: Neuromagnetic signal abnormalities in this study suggest cortical hyperexcitability in females with migraine during migraine attack, which could be measured and analyzed with MEG signal in a frequency range of 5-1000Hz. SIGNIFICANCE: These findings may help to identify neurophysiological biomarkers for studying mechanisms of migraine, and may facilitate to develop new therapeutic strategies for migraine by alterations in cortical excitability.

RESUMO

By using 1, 2, 4, 5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid as organic ligands, two uranyl coordination complexes, (UO2)2(bta)(DMA)2 (1) and [(UO2)2(bta)(µ3-OH2)]·2[HN(CH3)2]·H2O (2) (H4bta=1, 2, 4, 5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, DMA=N,N-Dimethylacetamide) were synthesized. The X-ray single crystal analysis revealed that complex 1 exhibits a 3-demensional framework, while complex 2 exhibits a 2-demensional framework. In order to furthermore characterize the two complexes and extend their functional properties, spectroscopies of IR, UV-vis, photoluminescence and surface photovoltage were also studied primarily. In addition, thermogravimetric analyses and photocatalytic studies for complexes 1 and 2 were discussed in detail.
