PURPOSE: This review assesses the effect of electrotherapy (e.g. functional electrical stimulation (FES), motor and sensor therapeutic electrical stimulation (TES)) on muscle strength and skeletal muscle characteristics in individuals post-stroke compared to conventional or sham therapy. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, focusing on randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of electrotherapy. Data of interest was extracted from eligible studies, and risk of bias was assessed. RESULTS: In total, 23 studies (933 people post-stroke) were included, of which 17, which mainly focus on patients in a chronic stage of stroke recovery and the implementation of FES, were incorporated in the meta-analysis. A significant increase in muscle strength was found favoring electrotherapy over conventional therapy (SMD 0.63, 95% CI 0.34-0.91, I2 = 37%, p = 0.07) and over sham therapy (SMD 0.44, 95% CI 0.20-0.68, I2 = 38%, p = 0.08). Three studies investigated the effect on muscle thickness and found a significant increase in favor of electrostimulation when compared to conventional therapy (MD 0.11 cm, 95% CI 0.06-0.16, I2 = 0%, p = 0.50). CONCLUSION: Current evidence suggests electrotherapy in combination with physiotherapy has positive effects on lower limb muscle strength and skeletal muscle characteristics in patients recovering from stroke.


As stroke is known to cause long term disability, the implementation of strengthening interventions in rehabilitation becomes an indispensable part to optimize recovery.Peripheral electrical stimulation might be a useful intervention since it has the potential to repetitively activate the sensory-motor system via electrical pulses to nerves and muscles of the paretic limb.Results of the meta-analysis indicate a beneficial effect of electrotherapy on muscle strength when compared to conventional and sham therapy, and muscle thickness when compared to conventional therapy.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of iron depletion in a prevalent population of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and to gain preliminary insights on the possibility of its treatment with oral drugs. METHODS: Iron status was determined in 31 consecutive prevalent idiopathic patients with PAH. Iron depletion was defined as serum iron <10 mmol/L and decreased transferrin saturation irrespective of the coexistence of anaemia. Patients underwent laboratory examinations, 6-min walking test and echocardiography in the same day. A subgroup of iron depleted patients received one oral capsule/day containing 30 mg of pyrophosphate sucrosomial iron for 16 weeks. After this period all patients were re-evaluated. RESULTS: Iron depletion was observed in 22 patients (71%), of whom 6 were also anaemic and 16 were not anaemic. Iron depletion was associated with higher systolic pulmonary artery pressure (60 [50-90] vs. 45 [40-50] mmHg, p = .007), greater prevalence of moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation (36% vs. 0%, p = .039), lower tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (23 [21-24] vs. 19 [18-20] mm; p = .025]) and higher left ventricular eccentricity index (1.35 vs. 1, p = .042). After 16 weeks of treatment, 6-min walking distance significantly improved (500 [390-500] vs. 530 [410-550] metres; p = .043). CONCLUSIONS: Iron deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with PAH and is associated with worse clinical conditions. Treatment with oral sucrosomial iron is a therapeutic option which should be further investigated in future trials.

Objectives and background: Tissue stabilized-guided subcision (TS-GS) treatment has emerged as a single session treatment for cellulite dimples. To date, studies on a few patients were reported. We present data concerning efficacy and safety of TS-GS for cellulite in a cohort of Italian patients.Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study involving 122 patients requiring cellulite treatment, classified according to validate cellulite dimples scale at rest, at T0. TS-GS technique is assessed in terms of efficacy (masked evaluations of pre- and post-treatment pictures, satisfaction of patients and variations in cellulite dimples scale at rest), safety of results at 12 months follow-up (T1). U nivariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to evaluate variables associated with the size effect.Results: Masked evaluations of 112 patients completing the study resulted in the correct selection of pre- and post-treatment images in all cases and all patients were satisfied. The mean cellulite dimples scale at rest score improved ≥1 point at T1. We found a significant association between size effect, higher satisfaction (p < .01), cellulite grading at T0 (p < .01), higher BMI (p = .037); a higher BMI was correlated to an increased cellulite grading at T0 (p = .02). Only minor and temporary adverse events were reported.Conclusions: We confirm herein the clinical efficacy and safety of TS-GS for cellulite dimples treatment in a cohort of Italian patients assessed with the validated cellulite dimples scale at rest.

Due to the difference in refraction coefficients between air and the corneal epithelium, irradiation of the skin with a light source can lead to reflection of the energy and its leakage to the skin causes epidermal injury. All of which decreases the efficacy of treatment. We evaluated cooling sapphire handpieces' efficacy in decreasing pain and epidermal injuries and enhancing the treatment outcome in laser hair removal. A total of 49 patients with Fitzpatrick skin types of II to IV were treated for laser hair removal on face, limbs, inguinal, and axillary areas with pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser equipped with a sapphire handpiece and the cooling system. Hair counts were performed by two independent observers at the baseline and 3 months after the final treatment. A marked reduction in hair regrowth was noted 3 months after the final treatment in all body locations studied. Clinical hair reduction was observed and fully assessed. There were no serious side effects with an average pain score of 4.6 out of 40. The cooled sapphire cylinder tip has been shown to minimize epidermal injury and reduce the system energy leaks to the skin.
