RESUMO

Pd/SSZ-13 has been proposed as a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) for low-temperature NOx adsorption. However, it remains challenging for Pd/SSZ-13 to work efficiently when suffering from phosphorus poisoning. Herein, we report a simple and efficient strategy to regenerate the phosphorus-poisoned Pd/SSZ-13 based on the cooperation between hydrothermal aging treatment and Na cocations. It was found that hydrothermal aging treatment enabled the redispersion of Pd and P-containing species in phosphorus-poisoned Pd/SSZ-13. Meanwhile, the presence of Na cocations significantly reduced the formation of AlPO4 and retained more paired Al sites for highly dispersed Pd2+ ions, which was of great importance for the recovery of adsorption performance. To our satisfaction, the restoration ratio of the adsorption capacity of poisoned Pd/SSZ-13 was >90% after regeneration. Strikingly, the NOx adsorption activities of phosphorus-poisoned Pd/SSZ-13 with phosphorus loadings of 0.2 and 0.4 mmol g-1 almost completely recovered upon regeneration. This study demonstrates the promoting effect of Na cocations on the regeneration of phosphorus-poisoned Pd/SSZ-13 by hydrothermal aging treatment, which provides useful guidance for the design of PNA materials with excellent durability for cold-start application.

RESUMO

Liver tumor is one of the most lethal cancers due to its low ratio of surgical resection, high recurrence rate, and invasiveness. Photothermal therapy (PTT) possesses many advantages for cancer therapy because of its noninvasive nature. However, most PTT is conducted in the first near-infrared (NIR-I) window, so second near-infrared (NIR-II) photosensitizers with higher penetrating ability and clinical prospects are seriously desirable. Herein, a semiconducting polymer with optimized absorption in NIR-I and NIR-II regions is obtained by ternary copolymerization methodology. The prepared nanoparticle (NP) from the semiconducting polymer is used for treatment of orthotopic liver cancer upon laser irradiation. Compared with an 808 nm laser, a 1064 nm laser leads to more effective inhibition toward orthotopic liver cancer in the same conditions. These results thus demonstrate that the NIR-II polymeric NPs may inspire another aspect for highly efficient therapy of various orthotopic cancers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fulminant Clostridium difficile colitis (fCDC) is a highly lethal disease with mortality rates ranging between 12% and 80%. Although often these patients require a total abdominal colectomy (TAC) with ileostomy, there is no established management protocol for post-operative antibiotics. In this study we aim to make some recommendations for post-operative antibiotic usage, while describing the practice across different institutions. METHODS: Multi-institutional retrospective case series including fCDC patients who underwent a TAC between January 1, 2007, and June 30, 2012. We first analyzed the complete cohort and consecutively performed a survivor analysis, comparing different antibiotic regimens. Additionally we stratified by time interval (antibiotics for ≤7 d, or ≥8 d). Primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Additional secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay (HLOS), ICU LOS, number of ventilator-free days, and occurrence of intra-abdominal complications (proctitis, abscess, sepsis, etc.). RESULTS: A total of 100 fCDC patients that underwent a TAC were included across five institutions. Four different antibiotic regimens were compared; A (metronidazole IV+vancomycin PO), B (metronidazole IV), C (metronidazole IV+vanco PO and PR), and D (metronidazole IV+vancomycin PR). The combination of IV metronidazole with or without PO vancomycin showed superior outcomes in terms of a shorter ICU length of stay and more ventilator-free days. However, when comparing metronidazole alone vs. metronidazole and any combination of vancomycin, no significant differences were found. Neither the addition of vancomycin enema, nor the time interval changed outcomes. CONCLUSION: Patients, after a TAC for fCDC, may be placed on either IV metronidazole or PO vancomycin depending upon local antibiograms, and proctitis may be treated with the addition of a vancomycin enema (PR). There was no data to support routine treatment of more than 7 d.

RESUMO

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the failure to produce functional pollen, which is inherited maternally. And it is known that anther development is modulated through complicated interactions between nuclear and mitochondrial genes in sporophytic and gametophytic tissues. However, an unbiased transcriptome sequencing analysis of CMS in cotton is currently lacking in the literature. This study compared differentially expressed (DE) genes of floral buds at the sporogenous cells stage (SS) and microsporocyte stage (MS) (the two most important stages for pollen abortion in JA-CMS) between JA-CMS and its fertile maintainer line JB cotton plants, using the Illumina HiSeq 2000 sequencing platform. A total of 709 (1.8%) DE genes including 293 up-regulated and 416 down-regulated genes were identified in JA-CMS line comparing with its maintainer line at the SS stage, and 644 (1.6%) DE genes with 263 up-regulated and 381 down-regulated genes were detected at the MS stage. By comparing the two stages in the same material, there were 8 up-regulated and 9 down-regulated DE genes in JA-CMS line and 29 up-regulated and 9 down-regulated DE genes in JB maintainer line at the MS stage. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to validate 7 randomly selected DE genes. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that genes involved in reduction-oxidation reactions and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism were down-regulated, while genes pertaining to photosynthesis and flavonoid biosynthesis were up-regulated in JA-CMS floral buds compared with their JB counterparts at the SS and/or MS stages. All these four biological processes play important roles in reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, which may be an important factor contributing to the sterile trait of JA-CMS. Further experiments are warranted to elucidate molecular mechanisms of these genes that lead to CMS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of intestinal function-recovering decoction on multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in rats, and to investigate a novel solution to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. METHODS: Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome was induced in 60 Sprague-Dawley rats by intestinal ischemia-reperfusion combined with cecal ligation and puncture. Then these rats were intragastrically administered physiological saline (group I, n=20), ampicillin (group II, n=20) or intestinal function-recovering decoction (group III, n=20). After treatment, serum malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase levels were compared among three groups. Simultaneously, bacterial culture of various organ tissues was performed and bacterial and endotoxin translocation were observed. RESULTS: Compared with group I, serum malondialdehyde, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were significantly decreased (all P<0.05) and serum superoxide dismutase level was significantly increased (P<0.05) in the group III. However, there were no significant differences in these indices between groups II and III (P>0.05). The rate of bacterial translocation in the groups II and III was significantly lower than in the group I (P<0.05), and no significant difference was observed between groups II and III (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Intestinal function-recovering decoction can significantly reduce endotoxin and bacterial translocation and stabilize enteral oxidative-antioxidative balance.
