Magnetic phosphorous biochar (MPBC) was prepared from Camellia oleifera shells using phosphoric acid activation and iron co-deposition. The materials were characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), specific surface area and pore size analysis (BET), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MPBC had a high surface area (1 139.28 m2·g-1) and abundant surface functional groups, and it could achieve fast solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The adsorption behavior and influencing factors of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water were investigated. The adsorbent showed excellent adsorption properties for SMX under acidic and neutral conditions, and alkaline conditions and the presence of CO32- had obvious inhibition on adsorption. The adsorption process conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. The adsorption rate was fast, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 356.49 mg·g-1. The adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction, and low temperature was beneficial to the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was mainly the chemisorption of pyrophosphate surface functional groups (C-O-P bond) between the SMX molecule and MPBC and also included hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (π-πEDA) interaction, and a pore filling effect. The development of MPBC adsorbent provides an effective way for resource utilization of waste Camellia oleifera shells and treatment of sulfamethoxazole wastewater.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered environmental pollutants that have received extensive attention recently. The accumulation of REEs in plants is important because REEs can eventually enter the human body via the food chain. Marigolds are widely utilized as medicinal and commercial plants in medicine, feed, and therapeutics. Due to the extremely high demand for marigold in global, it is urgent to investigate the accumulation and distribution of REEs in marigold plants to reduce human and animal health risks. Marigold leaves tended to bioaccumulate the highest amounts of REEs from soil compared with other tissues. The distribution patterns of REEs in marigold were similar to those in the rhizosphere soil, which was enriched in light rare earth elements. Cerium accumulated most in marigold and soil, accounting for nearly 50% of ΣREEs, followed by lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium. Roots were the most susceptible tissue affected by soil REE concentration, and a significant positive correlation was observed for REEs in the roots of marigold and soils (R = 0.87), while no significant correlation was observed for REEs in soils and other tissues. REEs were poorly transferred from soil to marigold, with bioaccumulation factor values for all tissues of marigold less than one. Additionally, REEs exhibited a positive correlation with Al and Fe in the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers of marigold. The present research revealed the biological interactions between marigold and soil and the distribution of REEs in various parts of marigold. It provides a reference for large-scale commercial cultivation and potential environmental risk in the future.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has become a health issue globally. Laminarin, a low molecular weight marine-derived ß-glucan, has been identified with multiple biological activities. In this study, the ameliorative effect on ALD of laminarin isolated from brown algae was investigated. Phenotypic, pathological alterations and biochemical characteristics indicated that laminarin administration (100 mg/kg/day) significantly alleviated liver injury and improved liver function in the alcohol-induced mice. Gene chip results indicated that laminarin treatment caused 52 up-regulated and 13 down-regulated genes in the hepatic tissues of alcohol-induced damage mice, and most of these genes are associated with regulation of oxidative stress (such as CYP450/glutathione-dependent antioxidation), Wnt signaling pathway, retinol metabolism, and cAMP pathway based on GO and KEGG analysis. PPI network analysis indicated that the downstream target genes lied in the hub of the net. Our experiments also confirmed the changed expressions of some target genes. Taken together, these results suggest that laminarin can ameliorate alcohol-induced damage in mice and its molecular mechanism lies in modulating anti-oxidation pathway, WNT pathway, and cAMP pathway, which regulate the expressions of downstream target genes and alleviate alcohol-induced damage. Our study provides new clue to prevent alcohol-induced damage and will be benefit to develop functional foods. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study verified the positive effect on alcoholic liver disease (ALD) of laminarin, a water-soluble brown algae-derived ß-glucan, linked by ß-(1,3) glycosidic bonds with ß-(1,6) branches. Laminarin significantly alleviated liver injury and improved liver function of ALD mice. Moreover, transcriptomics and bioinformatics analysis further revealed the gene expression patterns, hub targets, and signalings including CYP450/glutathione, Wnt, retinol metabolism, cAMP pathways regulated by laminarin. This research is the first evidence for hepatoprotective effect of laminarin against ALD and its molecular mechanism, which will be advantage to develop functional foods or adjuvant therapy of ALD.

Despite the dramatic advances in our understanding of the etiology of colorectal cancer (CRC) in recent decades, effective therapeutic strategies are still urgently needed. Oncogenic mutations in the Wnt/ß-Catenin pathway are hallmarks of CRC. Moreover, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as molecular managers are involved in the initiation, progression, and metastasis of CRC. Therefore, it is important to further explore the interaction between lncRNAs and Wnt/ß-Catenin signaling pathway for targeted therapy of CRC. Natural phytochemicals have not toxicity and can target carcinogenesis-related pathways. Growing evidences suggest that flavonoids are inversely associated with CRC risk. These bioactive compounds could target carcinogenesis pathways of CRC and reduced the side effects of anti-cancer drugs. The review systematically summarized the progress of flavonoids targeting lncRNA/Wnt axis in the investigations of CRC, which will provide a promising therapeutic approach for CRC and develop nutrition-oriented preventive strategies for CRC based on epigenetic mechanisms. In the field, more epidemiological and clinical trials are required in the future to verify feasibility of targeting lncRNA/Wnt axis by flavonoids in the therapy and prevention of CRC.

The pathophysiology of diabetes has been studied extensively in various countries, but effective prevention and treatment methods are still insufficient. In recent years, epigenetics has received increasing attention from researchers in exploring the etiology and treatment of diabetes. DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs play critical roles in the occurrence, maintenance, and progression of diabetes and its complications. Therefore, preventing or reversing the epigenetic alterations that occur during the development of diabetes may reduce the individual and societal burden of the disease. Dietary flavonoids serve as natural epigenetic modulators for the discovery of biomarkers for diabetes prevention and the development of alternative therapies. However, there is limited knowledge about the potential beneficial effects of flavonoids on the epigenetics of diabetes. In this review, the multidimensional epigenetic effects of different flavonoid subtypes in diabetes were summarized. Furthermore, it was discussed that parental flavonoid diets might reduce diabetes incidence in offspring, which represent a promising opportunity to prevent diabetes in the future. Future work will depend on exploring anti-diabetic effects of different flavonoids with different epigenetic regulation mechanisms and clinical trials. Hyperlipidemia is intricately associated with the dysregulation of gut microbiota and host metabolomes. This study explored the antihyperlipidemic function of oryzanol and investigated whether the function of oryzanol affected the gut microbiome and its related metabolites. Hamsters were fed a standard diet (Control) and a high fat and cholesterol (HFCD) diet with or without oryzanol, separately. Our results showed that oryzanol significantly decreased HFCD-induced fat accumulation, serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), LDL-c/HDL-c ratio, triglyceride, and liver steatohepatitis, attenuated HFCD-induced gut microbiota alterations, and altered amino acid concentrations in feces and the liver. We investigated the role of the gut microbiota in the observed beneficial effects; the protective effects of oryzanol were partly diminished by suppressing the gut bacteria of hamsters after using antibiotics. A fecal microbiota transplantation experiment was carried out by transplanting the feces from HFCD group hamsters or hamsters given oryzanol supplementation (as a donor hamster). Our results showed that administering the fecal liquid from oryzanol-treated hamsters attenuated HFCD-induced hyperlipidemia, significantly decreased the abundance of norank_f__Erysipelotrichaceae, norank_f__Eubacteriaceae, and norank_f__Oscillospiraceae and the concentration of tyrosine. These outcomes are significantly positively correlated with serum lipid concentration. This study illustrated that gut microbiota is the target of oryzanol in the antihyperlipidemic effect.

A high fat and cholesterol diet (HFCD) can modulate the gut microbiota, which is closely related with hypercholesterolemia. This study aimed to explore the anti-hypercholesterolemia effect of oryzanol, and investigate whether the function of oryzanol is associated with the gut microbiota and related metabolites. 16S rRNA and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry were applied for the gut microbiota and untargeted metabolomics, respectively. The results showed that HFCD significantly upregulated body fat accumulation and serum lipids, including triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and ratio of LDL-c/HDL-c, which induced hypercholesterolemia. Oryzanol supplementation decreased body fat accumulation and serum lipids, especially the LDL-c concentration and LDL-c/HDL-c ratio. In addition, the abundances of Desulfovibrio, Colidextribacter, norank_f__Oscillospiraceae, unclassified_f__Erysipelotrichaceae, unclassified_f__Oscillospiraceae, norank_f__Peptococcaceae, Oscillibacter, Bilophila and Harryflintia were increased and the abundance of norank_f__Muribaculaceae was decreased in HFCD-induced hyperlipidemia hamsters. Metabolites were changed after HFCD treatment and 9 differential metabolites belonged to bile acids and 8 differential metabolites belonged to amino acids. Those genera and metabolites were significantly associated with serum lipids. HFCD also disrupted the intestinal barrier. Oryzanol supplementation reversed the changes of the gut microbiota and metabolites, and intestinal barrier injury was also partly relieved. This suggests that oryzanol supplementation modulating the gut microbiota contributes to its anti-hyperlipidemia function, especially anti-hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous peritoneal metastasis of colorectal cancer usually predicts a bleak prognosis. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) have brought a glimmer of hope to the treatment of peritoneal cancer. Few cases treated with lobaplatin have been reported in the literature and the regimen is controversial. In this case, the comprehensive treatment scheme of lobaplatin-based HIPEC plus CRS and rechallenge using cetuximab plus systemic chemotherapy is effective, especially for the patients with left colon cancer (wild-type RAS). CASE PRESENTATION: A 49 year-old man with signet ring cell carcinoma of sigmoid colon with extensive abdominal metastasis (wild-type RAS) was hospitalized with prolonged abdominal pain, distention and abdominal mass. After receiving HIPEC with lobaplatin and XELOX regimen combined with cetuximab for eight cycles, the patient had been treated with the FOLFIRI regimen and cetuximab for 24 cycles, which discontinued due to myelosuppression. Because the disease recurred unfortunately 4 months later, the FOLFIRI + cetuximab regimen was initiated again and stopped after two cycles. Intestinal obstruction occurred 1 month later, so open total colectomy, CRS + HIPEC and ileorectal anastomosis were performed. Capecitabine adjuvant chemotherapy was administered, followed by the maintenance therapy with FOLFIRI + cetuximab regimen. After that, the patient has been in relatively stable condition. By August 2021, the overall survival is more than 45 months, which displays significant curative effect. CONCLUSION: For peritoneal metastasis from left colon cancer, the management with CRS + lobaplatin HIPEC and rechallenge of systemic chemotherapy plus targeted medicine based on gene detection can dramatically improve prognosis and extend the overall survival.

Studies have shown that the peroxidation caused by oxygen free radicals is an important reason of vascular endothelial dysfunction and multiple diseases. In this study, active peptides (F2ds) were isolated from the fermentation product of rice dregs and its antioxidant effects were approved. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) stimulated by H2O2 were used to evaluate the antioxidation effect and its molecular mechanism in the oxidative stress model. F2d protected H2O2-induced damage in HUVECs in a dosage-dependent manner. F2d can reduce the expression of Keap1, promote the expression of Nrf2, and activate the downstream target HO-1, NQO1, etc. It means F2d can modulate the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Using Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 to block the Nrf2 activation, the protective function of F2d is partially lost in the damage model. Our results indicated that F2d isolated from rice exerts antioxidant effects via the Nrf2 signaling pathway in H2O2-induced damage, and the work will benefit to develop functional foods.

Several publications report that octacosanol (OCT) has different biological functions. This study was designed to evaluate the antifatigue effect and molecular mechanism of octacosanol (200 mg/(kg day)) in forced exercise-induced fatigue models of trained male C57BL/6 mice. Results showed that octacosanol ameliorated the mice's autonomic activities, forelimb grip strength, and swimming endurance, and the levels of liver glycogen (LG), muscle glycogen (MG), blood lactic acid (BLA), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were also regulated. Gene analysis results showed that treatment with OCT upregulated 29 genes, while 38 genes were downregulated in gastrocnemius tissue. Gene ontology (GO) analyses indicated that these genes enriched functions in relation to myofibril, contractile fiber, and calcium-dependent adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) activity. Octacosanol supplementation significantly adjusted the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression levels related to fatigue performance. Octacosanol has an observably mitigating effect in exercise-induced fatigue models, and its molecular mechanism may be related to the regulation of tripartite motif-containing 63 (Trim63), periaxin (Prx), calcium voltage-gated channel subunit α1 H (Cacna1h), and myosin-binding protein C (Mybpc3) expression.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene response factors (ERFs) perform diverse functions in fruit development, ripening and senescence. However, the effects of postharvest treatments on ERF genes have not been widely investigated due to the lack of peach ERF genomic information. The aim of this study was to investigate the ERF genes' expression of freshly harvested peach during storage after 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment. METHODS: 10 µL L-1 1-MCP was used to fumigate peaches. Treated peaches and control peaches were stored at 20°C for 9 days. Fruit firmness, ethylene production and the transcript abundance of ERFs were evaluated during storage. RESULTS: 127 AP2/ERF genes were identified genome using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). Expression profiles of 39 ERF genes were considered at day 0, 3, 5 and 7. Results showed that 1-MCP inhibited some ERF genes' expression (e.g., Prupe.5G117800), some genes were generally up-regulated responding to 1-MCP (e.g., Prupe.6G039700), while the other ERF genes displayed no significant difference between the two groups (e.g., Prupe.1G130300). CONCLUSIONS: These data revealed that peach ERF genes perform diverse functions during fruit growth, ripening and senescence. The different responses of ERF genes to postharvest 1-MCP treatment may be useful to understand the roles of ethylene and ERF genes in controlling technological aspects of postharvest peach conservation.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are effective treatment options for selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). We compared the short-term outcomes of surgery plus HIPEC and CRS alone for PC. METHODS: We retrospectively examined patients who underwent CRS-HIPEC for PC at a single center from 2014 to 2019 using the Chinese CRS-HIPEC patient database at our institution. Patients were divided into two groups: surgery plus HIPEC (450) and surgery alone (200). A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed. The postoperative outcomes, mortality, and length of hospital stay were compared between the surgery plus HIPEC and CRS alone groups. RESULTS: Propensity scoring generated 162 pairs. There was no statistically significant difference in the 30-day mortality rate between the groups (0% vs 0%, P = 1.000), and the morbidity rates were similar in both groups (7.4% vs 8.0%, P = 0.835). The surgery plus HIPEC group had a longer operative time (247.81 ± 64.70 vs 184.55 ± 29.56, P ≤ 0.001) and a slightly longer postoperative hospital stay (14.64 ± 5.24 vs 12.59 ± 3.76, P ≤ 0.001). No other baseline characteristics were significantly different. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery plus HIPEC is feasible for select patients and is associated with prolonged surgery times and prolonged hospital stays, and there is no significant difference in mortality rates or postoperative outcomes.

Exploring the spatial relationship of various neuron pools in the spinal cord is crucial and difficult due to its complexity. The single-labelling tracing and sectioning were employed in previous studies exploring the distribution of spinal motor neuron pools, which could only delineate one single motor neuron pool in one specimen and could not achieve intact-tissue observation. Here, with combination of neuroanatomy tracing techniques and the optical clearing technique, we developed a multiple retrograde tracing method compatible with 3DISCO clearing. Fluoro-Gold, Fluoro-Ruby, Cholera Toxin Subunit B, Alexa Fluor 488 and 647 Conjugate were injected intramuscularly in hindlimbs of C57BL/6 adults. After labelling, the harvested spinal cords were optically cleared by 3DISCO method and imaged using confocal microscope. There were positive signals of all four tracers and four motor neurons pools targeting injected muscles were labelled. Three-dimension model of four motor neuron pools was successfully reconstructed based on tomography images showing the spatial relationship of different neuron pools. In conclusion, using this method, we first delineated the spatial relationship of four different motor neuron pools targeting four skeletal muscles in one spinal cord at the same time, which provide a holistic view of motor neuron pools in the spinal cord.

As the famous Chinese patent medicine, Yinhua Miyanling Tablets, which was derived from ancient prescription denominated Bazhengsan, has not only the effects in clearing away heat and purging pathogenic fire, removing dampness and relieving stranguria, but also have the functions of detoxifying and tonifying. A great number of scientific studies have demonstrated that Yinhua Mi-yanling Tablets played significant roles in destroying harmful microbes and resisting inflammatory and diuresis. Compared with antibiotics, traditional antibacterial Chinese patent medicine Yinhua Miyanling Tablets has the advantage in bacterial resistance in long-term use. Fundamental studies about the content of pharmaceutical ingredients and the modern pharmacology of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets were collected and summarized, which conduces to indicating the active ingredients of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets with the medicinal efficacy from the molecular level and the internal mechanism of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets in the treatment of urinary tract infection(UTI) from the scientific perspective. In the field of clinical research, literatures associated with Yinhua Miyanling Tablets for the treatment of UTI were summarized and analyzed in terms of treatment type, administration mode, dosage, frequency of medication, course, efficiency, side effects and whether combined with healthy lifestyle. These literatures confirmed the medicinal values and the application prospect of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets in treating UTI, especially acute UTI, which provides a scientific theoretical foundation and a correct direction for the clinical application of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets. In conclusion, this article contributes to the standardization of Yinhua Miyanling Tablets in the treatment of UTI, in the expectation of giving the scientific guidance for clinical practice.

1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) negatively affects peach aroma but the underlying molecular basis remains elusive. In this study, transcriptomics and metabolite analyses were carried out to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of 1-MCP on peach aroma from different standpoints: fatty acid (FA) metabolism, ethylene signal transduction and lipoxygenase/ß-oxidation pathway during 20 °C storage. Results indicate that 1-MCP significantly postponed the ethylene climacteric peak appearance and reduced ethylene production through down-regulation of related biosynthesis and signal transduction genes including PpaSAMS1/2, PpaACS1/2, PpaACO1 together with PpaETR1/2, PpaERS1, PpaEIN4 and PpaCTR1. Decrease in the levels of FAs and PpaFADs was observed in treated fruit, except oleic acid and PpaFAD4/5, before day 5 of storage. In addition, 1-MCP-treated fruit also possessed higher levels of C6 aldehydes and alcohols and delayed the formation of volatile compounds characteristic of peach-like aroma by upregulation of PpaLOX1/2/3 and PpaHPL1 expression and down-regulation of PpaLOX5 expression. Our findings suggest that inhibition of peach-like volatiles and promotion of green-note volatiles by 1-MCP were associated with ethylene production and modulation of FA levels through transcriptional regulation.

A questionnaire survey of 1 000 clinicians having experience in treating uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections from different levels of hospitals was conducted to mainly evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of clinical application of clinical practice guideline on traditional Chinese medicine therapy alone or combined with antibiotics for uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection(hereinafter referred to as Guideline). The research was conducted with the three-level quality control strictly throughout the process, and the data was real and reliable. The survey's results showed that: most clinicians considered that the Guideline had good clinical applicability. The availability and price of the recommended medicine were moderate. Traditional Chinese medicine had obvious features and advantages in treating lower urinary tract infection for it could reduce the usage of antibiotics and shorten the course of antibiotic application. In the recommendation section, clinicians proposed increasing medication guidance, updating the Guideline timely, as well as increasing treating methods and techniques, strengthen propaganda and promotion, and improve the use of evidence-based methods. In the evaluation of effectiveness, the majority of clinicians agreed that the definition in both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine and differential diagnosis in the Guideline were accurately described and the basic principle of treatment as well as the treating method of TCM were recommended appropriately. The TCM formulas and Chinese patent medicine had good effect. Some clinicians suggested refining the syndrome differentiation of stranguria. Some clinicians considered that the formulas and herbs recommended in Guideline didn't have obvious effect and some had doubts about the manipulation of fumigation and washing in the part of other methods recommended in Guideline. Moreover, specification and procedure of manipulation of fumigation and washing using herbs and the acupuncture included in characteristic TCM therapy treating uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection remained to be developed.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) belongs to the category of stranguria. This article describes the unsatisfactory situations in clinical practice such as antibiotics abuse, increasing of drug-resistant bacteria, high recurrence rate, etc. According to evidence-based medicine, literatures as evidence are collected for summarizing and analyzing and the result shows the advantages of TCM of relieving symptoms, reducing the dosage of antibiotics, less side effects, lower recurrence rate, etc. In the field of fundamental research, literatures associated with UTI are also summarized and analysed from several perspectives, such as causes, pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation, pharmacological effects of Chinese herbal medicine, working mechanism of non-drug therapy, etc and the result presents that integrated treatment of TCM in UTI has significant advangtages and its own characteristic.

The study was designed to identify differences in the dielectric properties of ex vivo colorectal cancerous tissues at different tumor stages. To date, 130 freshly excised colorectal cancerous specimens underwent measurement of both relative permittivity and conductivity on the serosal and mucosal surfaces of the carcinoma nidus, and the mucosa of the surgical resection margin ranging from 50 to 500 MHz at the Larmor frequencies. Tumor node metastasis staging was determined according to pathological reports for each patient. There were statistically significant differences in the relative permittivity of both colorectal cancerous serosa and mucosa among stages ≤I, II, III, and IV and between stages ≤II and ≥III (P < 0.05) at most frequencies under 300 MHz; statistically significant differences in conductivity were also observed for most of the measured frequencies (P < 0.05). The significant differences in dielectric characteristics among tumor stages, especially between early and advanced stages, have value for selecting appropriate surgical strategies. The presented ex vivo data provide important information for magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography in vivo system because the frequencies of 64 MHz (1.5T) and 128 MHz (3T) are usually used in clinical settings. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Comprehensive epidemiologic data on AKI are particularly lacking in Asian countries. This study sought to assess the epidemiology and clinical correlates of AKI among hospitalized adults in China. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of 659,945 hospitalized adults from a wide range of clinical settings in nine regional central hospitals across China in 2013. AKI was defined and staged according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes criteria. The incidence of AKI in the cohort was estimated using a novel two-step approach with adjustment for the frequency of serum creatinine tests and other potential confounders. Risk factor profiles for hospital-acquired (HA) and community-acquired (CA) AKI were examined. The in-hospital outcomes of AKI, including mortality, renal recovery, length of stay, and daily cost, were assessed. RESULTS: The incidence of CA-AKI and HA-AKI was 2.5% and 9.1%, respectively, giving rise to an overall incidence of 11.6%. Although the risk profiles for CA-AKI and HA-AKI differed, preexisting CKD was a major risk factor for both, contributing to 20% of risk in CA-AKI and 12% of risk in HA-AKI. About 40% of AKI cases were possibly drug-related and 16% may have been induced by Chinese traditional medicines or remedies. The in-hospital mortality of AKI was 8.8%. The risk of in-hospital death was higher among patients with more severe AKI. Preexisting CKD and need for intensive care unit admission were associated with higher death risk in patients at any stage of AKI. Transiency of AKI did not modify the risk of in-hospital death. AKI was associated with longer length of stay and higher daily costs, even after adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSION: AKI is common in hospitalized adults in China and is associated with significantly higher in-hospital mortality and resource utilization.

TGF-ß 1 has been recognized as a key mediator in DN. This study aimed to observe the effects of low-protein diets supplemented with ketoacid on mRNA and protein expression of TGF-ß and TßRI and t TßRII receptors in the renal tissue of diabetic rats. A diabetes model was established in 72 male SD rats. They were then equally randomized to three groups: NPD group, LPD group, and LPD + KA group. Additional 24 male SD rats receiving normal protein diets were used as the control. Eight rats from each group were sacrificed at weeks 4, 8, and 12 after treatment, from which SCr, BUN, serum albumin, and 24 h urinary protein excretion were collected. The expressions of TGF-ß 1, TßRI, and TßRII in LPD and LPD + KA groups were significantly lower than those in NPD group and lower in LPD + KA group than those in LPD group. Low-protein diets supplemented with ketoacid have been demonstrated to provide a protective effect on the renal function as represented by reduced SCr, BUN, and urinary protein excretion, probably through downregulating the gene expression of TGF-ß 1 and its receptors in LPD + KA group.
