Many farmers' incomes in developing countries depend on the cultivation of major crops grown in arid and semi-arid regions. The agricultural productivity of arid and semi-arid areas primarily relies on chemical fertilizers. The effectiveness of chemical fertilizers needs to improve by integration with other sources of nutrients. Plant growth-promoting bacteria can solubilize nutrients, increase plant nutrient uptake, and supplement chemical fertilizers. A pot experiment evaluated the promising plant growth-promoting bacterial strain's effectiveness in promoting cotton growth, antioxidant enzymes, yield, and nutrient uptake. Two phosphate solubilizing bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis IA6 and Paenibacillus polymyxa IA7) and two zinc solubilizing bacterial strains (Bacillus sp. IA7 and Bacillus aryabhattai IA20) were coated on cotton seeds in a single as well as co-inoculation treatments. These treatments were compared with uninoculated controls in the presence and absence of recommended chemical fertilizer doses. The results showed the co-inoculation combination of Paenibacillus polymyxa IA7 and Bacillus aryabhattai IA20 significantly increased the number of bolls, seed cotton yield, lint yield, and antioxidants activities, including superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, catalase, and peroxidase. Co-inoculation combination of Bacillus subtilis IA6 and Bacillus sp. IA16 promoted growth attributes, including shoot length, root length, shoot fresh weight, and root fresh weight. This co-inoculation combination also increased soil nutrient content. At the same time, Paenibacillus polymyxa IA7 + Bacillus aryabhattai IA20 increased nutrient uptake by plant shoots and roots compared.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency in humans is an emerging global health issue affecting approximately two billion people across the globe. The situation prevails due to the intake of Zn deficient grains and vegetables worldwide. Clinical identification of Zn deficiency in humans remains problematic because the symptoms do not appear until impair the vital organs, such as the gastrointestinal track, central nervous system, immune system, skeletal, and nervous system. Lower Zn body levels are also responsible for multiple physiological disorders, such as apoptosis, organs destruction, DNA injuries, and oxidative damage to the cellular components through reactive oxygen species (ROS). The oxidative damage causes chronic inflammation lead toward several chronic diseases, such as heart diseases, cancers, alcohol-related malady, muscular contraction, and neuro-pathogenesis. The present review focused on the physiological and growth-related changes in humans under Zn deficient conditions, mechanisms adopted by the human body under Zn deficiency for the proper functioning of the body systems, and the importance of nutritional and nutraceutical approaches to overcome Zn deficiency in humans and concluded that the biofortified food is the best source of Zn as compared to the chemical supplementation to avoid their negative impacts on human.

In the current study, cornstarch-based antimicrobial and edible films were designed using solution-casting methods. The medicinal plants (Acontium heterophyllum, Artemisia annua, and Thymus serpyllum) reinforced the gelatinized solution in different concentrations as fillers. The effect of plant extracts on antimicrobial and antioxidant potential, microstructure, barrier, thermal and mechanical properties of cornstarch-based films (SBFs) was investigated using antimicrobial activity, DPPH free radical scavenging values, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, water vapor transmission rate, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile strength. Likewise, it was depicted that the geometric and crystalline structures of medicinal plants' reinforced films remained the same even after processing. The mechanical tests indicated that the plant extracts effects are associated with reduced elongation, increasing tensile strength, and Young's modulus. Morphological analysis revealed the generation of uniform and the compact surfaces. However, films with 10% concentration of plant extracts have the lowest water vapor permeability values, and emerged better barrier properties. Moreover, these films showed the significant antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity.

Mineral nutrition of crop plants is one of the major challenges faced by modern agriculture, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. In alkaline calcareous soils, the availability of phosphorus and zinc is critically less due to their fixation and precipitation as complexes. Farmers use fertilizers to fulfill crop requirements, but their efficacy is less, which increases production costs. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can improve the availability of crop nutrients through solubilizing the insoluble compounds of phosphorus and zinc in soil. In the present study, a total of 40 rhizobacterial isolates were isolated from cotton rhizosphere and screened for improving cotton growth through the solubilization of phosphorus and zinc. Out of these 40 isolates, seven isolates (IA2, IA3, IA6, IA7, IA8, IA13, and IA14) efficiently solubilized insoluble rock phosphate while seven isolates (IA10, IA16, IA20, IA23, IA24, IA28, and IA30) were more efficient in solubilizing insoluble zinc oxide. In liquid media, strain IA7 (2.75 µg/mL) solubilized the highest amount of phosphate while the highest concentration of soluble zinc was observed in the broth inoculated with strain IA20 (3.94 µg/mL). Seven phosphate-solubilizing and seven zinc-solubilizing strains were evaluated using jar trial to improve the growth of cotton seedlings, and the results were quite promising. All the inoculated treatments showed improvement in growth parameters in comparison with control. Best results were shown by the combined application of IA6 and IA16, followed by the combination of strains IA7 and IA20. Based on the jar trial, the selected isolates were further characterized by plant growth-promoting characters such as siderophores production, HCN production, ammonia production, and exopolysaccharides production. These strains were identified through 16S rRNA sequencing as Bacillus subtilis IA6 (accession # MN005922), Paenibacillus polymyxa IA7 (accession # MN005923), Bacillus sp. IA16 (accession # MN005924), and Bacillus aryabhattai IA20 (accession # MN005925). It is hence concluded that the integrated use of phosphate-solubilizing and zinc-solubilizing strains as potential inoculants can be a promising approach for improving cotton growth under semi-arid conditions.

Background and objectives Vitamin D deficiency is a global public health issue, which affects people of all ages and ethnicities. However, severe deficiency seems to be more prevalent in the Middle East and South Asia. Evidence suggests that low serum 25-hydroxycholicalciferol [25(OH)D] levels are associated with an increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH). Yet, the 25-OHD levels leading to serum PTH increase are still a matter of debate. The objective of this study is to assess deficiency of vitamin D in otherwise healthy individuals, and to determine the response of the PTH to vitamin D deficiency. Methods This observational study was conducted from January 2018 to May 2018. A total of 43 individuals were selected from three separate clinics in Libya (Alrazy clinic, Alhaya clinic, and Alnukbah clinic). Blood drawn from these individuals was assessed for serum calcium, phosphorus, 25(OH)D, and PTH. These data were collected and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). Results The mean age and standard (SD) of the study participants was 47.4 ± 12.4. The age range was 19-67 years. The ratio of male to female was 1:2. The percentage of individuals with vitamin D deficiency in the study group was 95.3%, whereas the percentage of vitamin D insufficiency was 4.7%. These data suggest that individuals with severe deficiency show higher PTH values (75.66 ng/ml), whereas those with insufficiency showed lower PTH values (37.5 ng/ml). Conclusion The population in the present study was overall deficient in 25-OH vitamin D, which indicates a greater need for supplementation with vitamin D. However, not all the individuals with vitamin D deficiency have high levels of PTH, a finding that agrees with the need for new criteria in the management of vitamin D deficiency and the importance of PTH testing.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major dementia disease worldwide with an increasing incidence rate among the elderly. It is a neurodegenerative disease with symptoms starting slowly and then progressing over time. There has been extensive research on AD prevention and treatment; however, there is no cure as of yet. Several drugs are being researched for the treatment and prevention of AD, with a rising interest in specific dietary compounds as potential interventions with lower side effects. One such dietary compound being tested is phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogens are chemically, structurally, and functionally similar to estrogen, which has numerous functions as a cognition-promoting agent; although, as a supplement it can be damaging. Phytoestrogens have the unique ability to substitute for estrogen in elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease and depleted estrogen levels. This paper aims to contribute to the collective understanding of phytoestrogen's role in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease by describing its various mechanisms, including its ability to decrease amyloid beta peptide production, promote calcium outflow and acetylcholine release, and reduce Tau protein phosphorylation. The paper also addresses phytoestrogen's role as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent for the cholinergic neurons associated with Alzheimer's disease.

The treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) induced infections using antibiotic therapies is clinically well accepted; however, using a noninvasive approach with the implementation of therapeutic agents such as vitamin C is not well investigated. Vitamin C has certain characteristics, which allow for it to be considered as a potential treatment option for patients with H. pylori infections. Vitamin C's hostility and mechanism of action towards H. pylori infection in peptic ulcer disease can be classified into two categories: as a preventative agent and alternatively as a therapeutic agent. Preventatively vitamin C acts as a biological antioxidant as well as an immune boosting agent, while therapeutically it acts as an inhibitor of urease, a potential collagen synthesizing agent, and a stimulant in prostaglandin synthesis. As a result, the dosage of vitamin C should be highly regulated. Furthermore, numerous studies have shown that vitamin C supplementation if taken with antibiotics can increase the efficiency of the treatment leading to an increased possibility of eradication of H. pylori in infected individuals. This paper will investigate the recent studies that show different mechanisms through which vitamin C can be used as a preventative or a therapeutic agent for the treatment of H. pylori related infections.

Background Studies have linked vitamin D deficiency with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to the development of chronic complication of diabetes. Vitamin D receptors (VDR) have been found in many tissues in the body including the pancreas, a finding that indicates its role in insulin secretion. In addition, many studies have demonstrated the role of vitamin D and its receptor in insulin sensitivity and signal transduction. Vitamin D deficiency is common throughout the world, but not all vitamin D deficiencies are accompanied by a rise in parathyroid hormone (PTH). The present study was conducted to assess vitamin D deficiency in type 2 diabetic patients in comparison to healthy control and to determine parathyroid gland response to vitamin D deficiency in both groups. Methods This observational study was performed during a period from January to October 2018. The study included 151 type 2 diabetic patients selected from three diabetes clinics and 43 age and sex-matched healthy subjects. Informed consent and clinical information were obtained from all participants before the study. Results of the laboratory analysis for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), PTH, calcium, and phosphorous were recorded. The data was analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) Statistics 17. Results The results showed low vitamin D concentration in both groups; however, there was no significant difference in vitamin D concentration between diabetic patients and the control patients. A high percentage of PTH level was found in severe vitamin D deficient diabetic patients and healthy controls. The higher percentage of diabetic and normal subjects with mild vitamin D deficiency had a normal PTH level. All healthy subjects with vitamin D insufficiency showed normal PTH concentration. About 10% of diabetic patients with severe vitamin D deficiency had a low PTH level. Conclusion The population in our study was generally deficient in 25-OHD irrespective of diabetes mellitus, indicating a greater need for vitamin D supplementation. Not all vitamin D deficient patients have high PTH levels, a finding that supports the emergence of new criteria for vitamin D deficiency, diagnosis and treatment, and highlights the importance of testing PTH in this regard.

Incorporation of genetically modified crops in the cropping system raises the need for studying the effect of these crops on the soil ecosystem. The current study aimed to compare the effect of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)- and non-Bt-cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes on rhizosphere properties under fertilized and unfertilized soil conditions. One non-Bt-cotton (IUB 75) and four Bt-cotton varieties (IUB-222, MM-58, IUB-13, FH-142) were sown in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in a factorial fashion with three replications under unfertilized (T1) and fertilized (T2 at NPK 310-170-110 kg ha-1) soil conditions. The culturable soil bacterial population was recorded at flowering, boll opening, and harvesting stages, while other rhizosphere biological and chemical properties were recorded at harvesting. Results revealed that Bt-cotton genotypes IUB-222 and FH-142 showed significantly higher rhizosphere total nitrogen, NH4+-N, available phosphorus, and available potassium. Total organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon was also maximum in the rhizosphere of IUB-222 under fertilized conditions. Similarly, bacterial population (CFU g-1) at flowering stage and at harvesting was significantly higher in the rhizosphere of IUB-222 as compared to non-Bt- (IUB-75) and other Bt-cotton genotypes under same growth conditions. It showed that Bt genotypes can help in maintaining soil macronutrients (total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium) under proper nutrient management. Moreover, Bt-cotton genotypes seem to strengthen certain biological properties of the soil, thus increasing the growth and yield capability, maintaining available nutrients in the soil as compared to non-Bt cotton, while no harmful effects of Bt cotton on soil properties was detected.

BACKGROUND: The fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) of agricultural crops is generally low, which results in poor crop yields and low economic benefits to farmers. Among the various approaches used to enhance FUE, impregnation of mineral fertilizers with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) is attracting worldwide attention. The present study was aimed to improve growth, yield and nutrient use efficiency of wheat by bacterially impregnated mineral fertilizers. RESULTS: Results of the pot study revealed that impregnation of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea with PGPB was helpful in enhancing the growth, yield, photosynthetic rate, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) of wheat. However, the plants treated with F8 type DAP and urea, prepared by coating a slurry of PGPB (Bacillus sp. strain KAP6) and compost on DAP and urea granules at the rate of 2.0 g 100 g-1 fertilizer, produced better results than other fertilizer treatments. In this treatment, growth parameters including plant height, root length, straw yield and root biomass significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased from 58.8 to 70.0 cm, 41.2 to 50.0 cm, 19.6 to 24.2 g per pot and 1.8 to 2.2 g per pot, respectively. The same treatment improved grain yield of wheat by 20% compared to unimpregnated DAP and urea (F0). Likewise, the maximum increase in photosynthetic rate, grain NP content, grain NP uptake, NUE and PUE of wheat were also recorded with F8 treatment. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the application of bacterially impregnated DAP and urea is highly effective for improving growth, yield and FUE of wheat. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

In present study hypoglycaemic effects of the crude powdered C. decussata and its methanolic extract (ME) in alloxan diabetic rabbits were evaluated. The hypoglycaemic effect was measured by blood glucose, insulin level, HbA1c and his to pathology of pancreas. Glucose lowering effect of the ME was studied in diabetic rabbits. The effects of extract on blood glucose, body weight, food in take, fluid intake, OGTT were also evaluated. The results showed that 0.5,1 and 2g/kg of the powder significantly decreased blood glucose levels in normal rabbits and diabetic rabbits at the intervals checked. Oral intake of pioglitazone also reduced the levels in these rabbits. Synergistic hypoglycaemic effect of 600mg/kg of ME with different doses of insulin (2 & 3unit/kg, s/c) further reduced blood glucose levels of treated alloxan-diabetic rabbits. The oral glucose tolerance test revealed lowered area under curve values in ME treated rabbits. Treatment with ME (400 and 600 mg/kg) for 30 days showed highly significant decrease in blood glucose level by augmenting insulin secretion, HbA1cand significant increase in body weight, serum insulin levels in treated diabetic rabbits. Histopathology study showed regeneration of ß-cells. These studies have, therefore, supported the traditional use of this herb in diabetic patients.

The inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family member X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) is essential for cell survival in lymphoma. However, the role of XIAP overexpression in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is not fully elucidated. Therefore, we analysed the expression of XIAP protein and its clinicopathological correlation in a large cohort of DLBCLs by immunohistochemistry in a tissue micro-array format. XIAP was found to be overexpressed in 55% of DLBCLs and significantly associated with poor clinical outcome (p = 0.0421). To further elucidate the role of XIAP in DLBCL and the inter-relationship with PI3-kinase/AKT signalling, we conducted several in vitro studies using a panel of DLBCL cell lines. We found that pharmacological inhibition of XIAP led to caspase-dependent apoptosis in DLBCL cells. We also detected an inter-relationship between XIAP expression and activated AKT in DLBCL cells that may explain cellular resistance to PI3-kinase/AKT inhibition-mediated apoptosis. Finally, this anti-apoptotic effect was overcome by simultaneous pharmacological inhibition of XIAP and PI3-kinase/AKT signalling leading to a more potent synergistically induced apoptosis. In summary, our data suggest that XIAP expression is a poor prognostic factor in DLBCL and the XIAP-AKT relationship should be explored further as a potential therapeutic target in DLBCL.

Fatty acid synthase (FASN), the enzyme responsible for de novo synthesis of fatty acids, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target for several cancers; however, its role in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the role of FASN in a large series of DLBCL tissues in a tissue microarray (TMA) format followed by in vitro studies using DLBCL cell lines. FASN was found to be expressed in 62.6% DLBCL samples and was seen in highly proliferative tumors, manifested by high Ki67 (P < 0.0001). Significant association was found between tumors expressing high FASN and c-Met tyrosine kinase (P < 0.0002), as well as p-AKT (P = 0.0309). In vitro, pharmacological FASN inhibition and small interference RNA (siRNA) targeted against FASN triggered caspase-dependent apoptosis and suppressed expression of c-Met kinase in DLBCL cell lines, which further highlighted the molecular link between FASN and c-Met kinase. Finally, simultaneous targeting of FASN and c-Met with specific chemical inhibitors induced a synergistically stimulated apoptotic response in DLBCL cell lines. These findings provide evidence that FASN, via c-Met tyrosine kinase, plays a critical role in the carcinogenesis of DLBCL and strongly suggest that targeting FASN may have therapeutic value in treatment of DLBCL.
