RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, imaging and pathological features of extraskeletal osteosarcoma (EOS) and to improve the understanding of this disease and other similar lesions. METHODS: The data for 11 patients with pathologically confirmed extraosseous osteosarcoma, including tumour site and size and imaging and clinical manifestations, were analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: Six patients were male (60%), and 5 were female (40%); patient age ranged from 23 to 76 years (average age 47.1 years). Among the 11 patients, 7 had clear calcifications or ossification with different morphologies, and 2 patients showed a massive mature bone tumour. MRI showed a mixed-signal mass with slightly longer T1 and T2 signals in the tumour parenchyma. Enhanced CT and MRI scans showed enhancement in the parenchyma. Ten patients had different degrees of necrosis and cystic degeneration in the mass, 2 of whom were complicated with haemorrhage, and MRI showed "fluid‒fluid level" signs. Of the 11 patients, five patients survived after surgery, and no obvious recurrence or metastasis was found on imaging examination. One patient died of lung metastasis after surgery, and 2 patients with open biopsy died of disease progression. One patient died of respiratory failure 2 months after operation. 2 patients had positive surgical margins, and 1 had lung metastasis 6 months after operation and died 19 months after operation. Another patient had recurrence 2 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of EOS requires a combination of clinical, imaging and histological examinations. Cystic degeneration and necrosis; mineralization is common, especially thick and lumpy mineralization. Extended resection is still the first choice for localized lesions. For patients with positive surgical margins or metastases, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy is needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition of natural history, complications, and outcomes of patients who develop non-acetaminophen (APAP) drug-induced acute liver failure (ALF). To clarify high-risk factors and develop a nomogram model to predict transplant-free survival (TFS) in patients with non-APAP drug-induced ALF. METHODS: Patients with non-APAP drug-induced ALF from 5 participating centers were retrospectively analyzed. The primary endpoint was 21-day TFS. Total sample size was 482 patients. RESULTS: Regarding causative agents, the most common implicated drugs were herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) (57.0%). The hepatocellular type (R ≥ 5) was the main liver injury pattern (69.0%). International normalized ratio, hepatic encephalopathy grades, the use of vasopressor, N-acetylcysteine, or artificial liver support system were associated with TFS and incorporated to construct a nomogram model (drug-induced acute liver failure-5, DIALF-5). The AUROC of DIALF-5 for 7-day, 21-day, 60-day, and 90-day TFS in the internal cohort were 0.886, 0.915, 0.920, and 0.912, respectively. Moreover, the AUROC of DIALF-5 for 21-day TFS had the highest AUROC, which was significantly higher than 0.725 of MELD and 0.519 of KCC (p < 0.05), numerically higher than 0.905 of ALFSG-PI but without statistical difference (p > 0.05). These results were successfully validated in the external cohort (147 patients). CONCLUSIONS: Based on easily identifiable clinical data, the novel DIALF-5 model was developed to predict transplant-free survival in non-APAP drug-induced ALF, which was superior to KCC, MELD and had a similar prediction performance to ALFSG-PI but is more convenient, which can directly calculate TFS at multiple time points.

RESUMO

According to the characteristics of contaminated soil around uranium mines, combined with the pollution path of soil, the response relationship between the gamma radiation dose rate and radium activity concentration in contaminated soil was proposed by using a numerical model and subequilibrium theory. The results showed that the topsoil (depth 20 cm) made the mainly contribution of gamma dose rate (above 88%), and the main nuclide of concern was radium. Additionally, the uranium-radium equilibrium coefficient between 0 and 0.3 had a great influence on the gamma dose rate. The method proposed in this study could quickly identify the radium activity concentration in topsoil by using on-site gamma dose rate monitoring data. Compared with the actual monitoring results within ±10% error control, which had strong operability. This method could quickly identify the location and scope of contaminated soil and guide the on-site monitoring points around uranium mines.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of aristolochic acid (AA)-associated cancer in patients with AA nephropathy (AAN). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with AAN at Peking University First Hospital from January 1997 to December 2014. Long-term surveillance and follow-up data were analyzed to investigate the influence of different factors on the prevalence of cancer. The primary endpoint was the incidence of liver cancer, and the secondary endpoint was the incidence of urinary cancer during 1 year after taking AA-containing medication to 2014. RESULTS: A total of 337 patients diagnosed with AAN were included in this study. From the initiation of taking AA to the termination of follow-up, 39 patients were diagnosed with cancer. No cases of liver cancer were observed throughout the entire follow-up period, with urinary cancer being the predominant type (34/39, 87.17%). Logistic regression analysis showed that age, follow-up period, and diabetes were potential risk factors, however, the dosage of the drug was not significantly associated with urinary cancer. CONCLUSIONS: No cases of liver cancer were observed at the end of follow-up. However, a high prevalence of urinary cancer was observed in AAN patients. Establishing a direct causality between AA and HCC is challenging.

RESUMO

Microbial diversity and activities in petroleum reservoir systems can be altered by water-flooding operation, but the current understanding of the mechanism for such changes in microbial composition characteristics and community is inadequate. In this study, microbial communities especially functional groups in production water from five petroleum reservoirs in China were investigated by chemical and molecular biological analyses. The dominant and core phyla in the five oil reservoirs were Proteobacteria, Deferribacterota, Firmicutes, Desulfobacterota, Euryarchaeota and Thermoplasmatota. At the genus level, the dominant taxa in each petroleum reservoir were different, and not all of the dominant genera were the core members across the five oil reservoirs. The microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) were investigated for the functional groups in each production water. The corrosion rates in production water were higher than controls with a positive correlation to the abundances of sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP). The SRP diversity based on the aprA and dsrA gene analysis showed that obvious differences were evident between onshore (JS, SL, DQ and XJ) and offshore (BS) oilfields. The core SRP taxa in onshore oilfields were Desulfomicrobium and Desulfovibrio, also with Desulfotomaculum in medium/low-temperature oil reservoirs (DQ and XJ), but in high-temperature petroleum reservoirs (JS, BS and SL), Archaeoglobus, Thermodesulfobacterium and Thermodesulfovibrio were the core groups. Statistical analysis indicated that temperature, electron acceptors and donors showed significant influence on the SRP community. This research reveals the characteristics of microbial and functional community as well as their interaction mechanism on corrosion in petroleum reservoir environments, and will improve industrial bio-control and management of MIC in oilfields.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and liver fibrosis are associated with a high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. We assessed whether entecavir (ETV) plus Biejia-Ruangan compound (BRC), an anti-fibrotic traditional Chinese medicine, can further reduce the risk of HCC in treatment-naïve Chinese patients with CHB and an Ishak fibrosis score of ≥3 points derived from our parent double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. METHODS: After a 72-week comparison between ETV+BRC and ETV+placebo treatment, participants were eligible to enter an open-label treatment phase and were followed up every 6 months. The primary [secondary] endpoints were the incidence of HCC [liver-related deaths, non-HCC events, and non-liver-related deaths]. Modified intention-to-treat (mITT), intention-to-treat (ITT), and per-protocol (PP) populations were defined for the time-to-event analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1,000 patients were recruited; the median age was 42.0 years; 69.9% were male and 58.3% were HBeAg positive. In the mITT population, the 7-year cumulative incidence of HCC [liver-related deaths] was 4.7% [0.2%] for ETV+BRC, which was significantly lower than 9.3% [2.2%] for ETV monotherapy (p = 0.008 [p = 0.030]). Notably, ETV+BRC treatment yielded a lower incidence of HCC in those who did not achieve regression of fibrosis at week 72 than ETV monotherapy (p = 0.018). There were no differences in the other 2 secondary endpoints or safety profiles between the groups. Multivariable Cox proportional regression analysis, including the treatment allocation as a parameter, also demonstrated that ETV+BRC treatment was associated with a reduced incidence of HCC. The ITT and PP analyses showed consistent results. CONCLUSIONS: ETV plus BRC combination treatment could further reduce the risk of HCC and liver-related deaths in patients with CHB and advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, which may have important clinical implications for HCC prevention. LAY SUMMARY: Patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection are at an increased risk of developing liver cancer (specifically hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]). While there are effective antiviral treatments that can suppress the virus in chronically infected patients, the risk of HCC remains. Herein, we show that adding a traditional Chinese medicine called Biejia-Ruangan compound to an antiviral reduced the risk of HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

RESUMO

The present study explored the anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic mechanism of Jingfang Granules on tail thrombosis induced by carrageenan in mice. Thirty-two male ICR mice were randomly divided into a control group, a model group, a Jingfang Granules group, and a positive drug(aspirin) group, with eight mice in each group. The thrombosis model was induced by intraperitoneal injection of carrageenan(45 mg·kg~(-1)) combined with low-temperature stimulation, and the mice were treated with drugs for 7 days before modeling. Twenty-four hours after modeling, blood was detected for four blood coagulation indices in each group. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to detect the activity of plasma interleukin-6(IL-6), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and other inflammatory factors. The tails of mice in each group were cut off to observe tail lesions and measure the length of the thrombus. The protein expression and phosphorylation level of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2(ERK1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(p38 MAPK) in spleen tissues were detected by Western blot. The results showed that dark red thrombus appeared in the tails of mice in each group. The length of the black part accounted for about 40% of the total tail in the model group. Additionally, the model group showed prolonged prothrombin time(PT), increased fibrinogen(FIB) content, and shortened activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT). Compared with the model group, the groups with drug intervention displayed shortened black parts in the tail and improved four blood coagulation indices(P<0.05). As revealed by ELISA, the expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in the mouse plasma were significantly up-regulated in the model group, and those in the groups with drug intervention were reduced as compared with the model group(P<0.05). As demonstrated by Western blot, the protein expression and phosphorylation levels of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK in the spleen tissues were significantly elevated in the model group, while those in the Jingfang Granules group were down-regulated as compared with the model group with a significant difference. Jingfang Granules can inhibit tail thrombosis of mice caused by carrageenan presumedly by inhibiting the activation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathways.

RESUMO

The electrophysiological properties of the heart include cardiac automaticity, excitation (i.e., depolarization and repolarization of action potential) of individual cardiomyocytes, and highly coordinated electrical propagation through the whole heart. An abnormality in any of these properties can cause arrhythmias. MicroRNAs (miRs) have been recognized as essential regulators of gene expression through the conventional RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism and are involved in a variety of biological events. Recent evidence has demonstrated that miRs regulate the electrophysiology of the heart through fine regulation by the conventional RNAi mechanism of the expression of ion channels, transporters, intracellular Ca2+-handling proteins, and other relevant factors. Recently, a direct interaction between miRs and ion channels has also been reported in the heart, revealing a biophysical modulation by miRs of cardiac electrophysiology. These advanced discoveries suggest that miR controls cardiac electrophysiology through two distinct mechanisms: immediate action through biophysical modulation and long-term conventional RNAi regulation. Here, we review the recent research progress and summarize the current understanding of how miR manipulates the function of ion channels to maintain the homeostasis of cardiac electrophysiology.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of the antithrombotic therapy using the oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban and clopidogrel in Chinese patients with acute coronary syndrome complicated with atrial fibrillation after percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS: A total of 100 patients were selected. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: the treatment group (rivaroxaban group) received a therapy of rivaroxaban and clopidogrel. The control group (warfarin group) receivied a combined treatment of warfarin, clopidogrel, and aspirin. The primary outcome endpoint was evaluated based on the adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events within 12 months. RESULTS: A total of 8 (8.00%) main adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events occurred during the 12 months of follow-up, including 5 (9.80%) in the warfarin group and 3 (6.10%) in the rivaroxaban group. The risk of having main adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events in the two groups was comparable (P = 0.479). A total of 9 patients (9.00%) were found to have bleeding events, among which 8 patients (15.7%) were in the warfarin group, whereas only 1 patient (2.00%) was in the rivaroxaban group. Therefore, the risk of bleeding in the warfarin group was significantly higher than that in the rivaroxaban group (P = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS: In Chinese patients with acute coronary syndrome complicated with atrial fibrillation, the efficacy of the dual therapy of oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban plus clopidogrel after percutaneous coronary intervention was similar to that of the traditional triple therapy combined with warfarin, aspirin and clopidogrel, but it has a better safety property, which has potential to widely apply to antithrombotic therapy after PCI.

RESUMO

Water flooding is widely employed for oil production worldwide. However, there has never been a systematic investigation of the microbial communities occurring in oilfield water re-injection facilities. Here, we investigated the distribution of bacterial and archaeal communities in water re-injection facilities of an oilfield, and illustrated the combined influences of environmental variation and the microorganisms in injected water on the microbial communities. Bacterial communities from the surface injection facilities were dominated by aerobic or facultative anaerobic Betaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Flavobacteria, whereas Clostridia, Deltaproteobacteria, Anaerolineae, and Synergistia predominated in downhole of the injection wells, and Gammaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Epsilonproteobacteria predominated in the production wells. Methanosaeta, Methanobacterium, and Methanolinea were dominant archaea in the injection facilities, while Methanosaeta, Methanomethylovorans, and Methanoculleus predominated in the production wells. This study also demonstrated that the microorganisms in injected water could be easily transferred from injection station to wellheads and downhole of injection wells, and environmental variation and diffusion-limited microbial transfer resulted from formation filtration were the main factors determining microbial community assembly in oil-bearing strata. The results provide novel information on the bacterial and archaeal communities and the underlying mechanisms occurring in oilfield water re-injection facilities, and benefit the development of effective microbiologically enhanced oil recovery and microbiologically prevented reservoir souring programs.

RESUMO

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) has been successfully used in oil exploitation to increase oil production. However, the mechanisms of microbial interactions and community assembly related to oil production performance along MEOR process are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the microbiome of an oil reservoir for a period of 5 years under three phases of different treatments with the injection of a mixture of microbes, nutrients, and air at different intensity. During the MEOR process, amplification of functional genes revealed an increase of genes related to hydrocarbon degradation linked to methanogenesis, supported by stable isotope analysis for confirmation of the methanogenesis activity. Meanwhile, a lower contribution of the ubiquitous/common taxa, closer and more positive associations, and lower modularity were observed in bacterial co-occurrence networks, with the rare taxa being the keystone taxa. The null model analysis and structural equation modeling revealed that the contribution of stochastic processes affected by functional groups and co-occurrence patterns to bacterial community increased significantly with the increase of oil production. This provides new insight that stochastic assembly in bacterial community increased along with MEOR process, and it is worthwhile paying attention to the uncertain consequences caused by random evolution since the treatment effect of MEOR is closely related to the in-situ community in oil reservoir.

RESUMO

Disentangling ecological mechanisms behind dredging is meaningful to implement environmental policy for improving water quality. However, environmental adaptation and community assembly processes of bacterioplankton in response to dredging disturbance are poorly understood. Based on Illumine MiSeq sequencing and multiple statistical analyses, we estimated interactions, functions, environmental breadths, phylogenetic signals, phylogenetic clustering, and ecological assembly processes of bacterioplankton community before and after dredging. We found distinct change in community composition, comparable decreases in diversity, functional redundancy and conflicting interaction, relatively low phylogenetic clustering, and relatively weak environmental adaptation after dredging. The bacterioplankton community assembly was affected by both stochastic and deterministic processes before dredging, but dominated by stochasticity after dredging. Sediment total phosphorus was a decisive factor in balancing determinism and stochasticity for bacterioplankton community assembly before and after dredging. Consequently, taxonomic and phylogenetic α-diversities of bacterioplankton exhibited higher contributions to the water trophic level represented by chlorophyl α before dredging than afterwards. Our results emphasized bacterioplankton in response to environmental changes caused by dredging, with nutrient loss and ecological drift playing important roles. These findings extend knowledge of contribution of bacterioplankton diversity to water trophic level and decipher mechanisms of bacterioplankton diversity maintenance in response to dredging, which is useful for guiding mitigation of cyanobacterial blooms.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient, limiting plant growth and microbial activity in many ecosystems. However, a few studies have been conducted to investigate P dynamics and the factors driving P dynamics in peatland soils. Therefore, this study chose Zoige Plateau peatland (the largest peatland in China) to reveal P dynamics and the possible driving factors through fractionating soil P and investigating a series of abiotic and biotic factors. It is found that season, peatland type, and soil depth could strongly affect P dynamics. H2O-P and NaHCO3-P (labile P) had lower content, while NaOH-P, HCl-P, Mix-P, and Residual-P (non-labile P) were the dominant fractions. Besides, the sum of P fractions was higher than the traditional measurement of total P, suggesting P storage might be underestimated in peatland soils. Moreover, it is observed that biotic factors affected P fractions more than abiotic factors, and fungi affected refractory P more than bacteria. This study provides essential information for understanding P cycling in peatland soils and emphasizes specific microbes related to P cycling, which should be paid more attention to in the future.

RESUMO

A vegetated drainage ditch (VDD) system is an effective management practice for removing excess phosphorus (P) from agricultural runoff. However, the maximization of P removing efficiency by VDD remains a challenge. In this study, new VDDs with akadama clay barriers (particle size of clay: 1-6 mm; height of barrier: 5-15 cm and length of barrier: 10-90 cm) were designed in lab scale, and the mechanism of phosphate removal by akadama clay was investigated. It was found that a new VDD with akadama clay barriers (particle size:1 mm; height:10 cm and length: 90 cm) exhibited the highest removal efficiency of total P (TP) (97.1%), particulate P(PP) (96.9%), and dissolved P (DP) (97.4%), respectively. The retained P was mainly adsorbed in akadama clay barrier sections, and a low concentration of P was observed in soil sections in the new VDD. The maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate to akadama clay was 5.06 mg/g at 298 K, and XPS analysis indicated that phosphate was adsorbed by the inner-sphere complexation formation with the metal elements (Al, Fe). This study indicates that the new VDD with akadama clay barriers is a promising technique to efficiently remove P from agricultural runoff and significantly minimize the risk of P release into streams through runoff.

RESUMO

Gualou-Xiebai-Banxia decoction has a long history of medical use for treating cardiovascular diseases in China. In this study, we investigated the protective effect and underlying mechanisms GXB in type II diabetes with acute myocardial ischemia (T2DM-AMI) rats. We hypothesized that GXB may display its protective effect on T2DM-AMI by reducing endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) apoptosisviaactivating PI3K (phosphatidyl inositol 3-kinase)/Akt (serine/threonine protein kinase B)/eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) signaling. Rats were challenged with a high-fat diet and intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin to induce a model of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary ligation to induce acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Changes in metabolites were assessed via enzyme-linked immunoassay and biochemical examination. The number and apoptosis rate of EPCs in peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry. Target mRNAs and proteins in EPCs were analyzed by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The results demonstrated that GXB treatment decreased T2DM-AMI-associated changes in plasma fasting blood glucose, muscular enzymes, and blood lipids, and reduced oxidative stress. Furthermore, EPC apoptosis was increased in T2DM-AMI rats and was associated with decreased mRNA and protein levels of PI3K, Akt, and eNOS compared to the controls. Conversely, T2DM-AMI rats treated with GXB exhibited more circulating EPCs and downregulated levels of cell apoptosis, combined with increased mRNA and protein levels of PI3K, Akt, and eNOS compared to those of untreated T2DM-AMI rats. Our study showed that GXB treatment mitigated EPC apoptosis and promoted PI3K/Akt/eNOS signaling in T2DM-AMI rats.

RESUMO

Recent studies indicate that ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) may play an important role in nitrogen removal by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, our knowledge of the mechanisms employed by AOA for growth and survival in full-scale WWTPs is still limited. Here, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses combined with a laboratory cultivation experiment revealed that three active AOAs (WS9, WS192, and WS208) belonging to family Nitrososphaeraceae were active in the deep oxidation ditch (DOD) of a full-scale WWTP treating landfill leachate, which is configured with three continuous aerobic-anoxic (OA) modules with low-intensity aeration (≤ 1.5 mg/L). AOA coexisted with AOB and complete ammonia oxidizers (Comammox), while the ammonia-oxidizing microbial (AOM) community was unexpectedly dominated by the novel AOA strain WS9. The low aeration, long retention time, and relatively high inputs of ammonium and copper might be responsible for the survival of AOA over AOB and Comammox, while the dominance of WS9, specifically may be enhanced by substrate preference and uniquely encoded retention strategies. The urease-negative WS9 is specifically adapted for ammonia acquisition as evidenced by the high expression of an ammonium transporter, whereas two metabolically versatile urease-positive AOA strains (WS192 and WS208) can likely supplement ammonia needs with urea. This study provides important information for the survival and application of the eutrophic Nitrososphaeraceae AOA and advances our understanding of archaea-dominated ammonia oxidation in a full-scale wastewater treatment system.

RESUMO

Spatial and temporal characteristics of release fluxes of sediment nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were investigated in the high-risk period of algal blooms in Lake Erhai. Moreover, the influence factors were examined. Results show that the release flux of N and P increased in recent years, exhibiting a clear increase in the period from 2009 to 2013, and a slight increase in the period since 2013. The release flux of dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) ranged between 11.71-14.15 mg·(m2·d)-1, within which the release flux of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were 6.39-8.42 mg·(m2·d)-1 and 5.31-5.73 mg·(m2·d)-1, accounting for 58% and 42% of the DTN, respectively. The release flux of dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) ranged between 0.11-0.14 mg·(m2·d)-1, within which the release flux of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) were 0.04-0.05 mg·(m2·d)-1 and 0.07-0.09 mg·(m2·d)-1, accounting for 34% and 66% of the DTP, respectively. The distribution of release flux of N showed a decreasing order:south > north > middle, while P was north > middle > south. The release flux of N increased by 17%, 13% and 23%, and the release flux of P increased by 19%, 28%, and 29% in north, middle, and south part of Lake Erhai from 2009 to 2018. Comparing the years 2009, 2013 and 2018, although the contents of N and P were stable, the release flux of N and P in the sediment was enhanced due to increasing pH and decreasing DO. Therefore, the increasing release of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments, caused by changes in the water environment factors, should be paid attention to for the protection of Lake Erhai.

RESUMO

Microbial reduction of sulfate and metal were simultaneously enhanced in the presence of graphene oxide (GO)-like nanomaterials, however, the mechanism remained unclear. In this study, bio-reduction of Cr was compared between free-living bacterium BY7 and immobilized BY7 (BY-rGO) on reduced GO particles. The role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and rGO material on reduction of sulfate and Cr was investigated. Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and elemental Cr by BY-rGO particles up to 51% and 28%, respectively. EPS produced by the bacterium BY7 mainly consisted of proteins, polysaccharides, nucleic acids and humic substances. Concentration of EPS was sharply increased (about 54%) with the addition of graphene oxide, while the composition of EPS components was strongly affected by the exposure to Cr. By removing surface EPS without breaking the cells, reduction activities of sulfate and chromium by both BY-rGO particles and free-living BY7 cells were decreased. In contrast, reduction of sulfate and Cr by the free-living BY7 cells was enhanced with external addition of extracted EPS. Based on electrochemical analysis, the reduction peak indicating enhanced electron transfer was lost after removing EPS. Moreover, the contribution of each EPS fractions on sulfate and Cr reduction followed an order of polysaccharides > proteins > humic substances. Therefore, microbial sulfate and Cr reduction processes in the presence of BY-rGO particles were enhanced by the increasing amounts of EPS, which likely mediated electron transfer during sulfate and Cr reduction, and relieved bacteria from metal toxicity. Nevertheless, the presence of rGO was crucially important for elemental Cr production under sulfate-reducing condition, which might contribute to lowering electric potential or reducing activation energy for Cr(III) reduction. This work provided direct evidences for enhancing sulfate and Cr reduction activities by supplement of EPS as an additive to increase treatment efficiency in environmental bioremediation.
