The ovarian germline stem cells(OGSCs) cultured in the optimized culture system were used as the research object to observe the effect of Tripterygium glycosides(TG) on OGSCs and explore the mechanism of reproductive toxicity by the Notch signaling pathway. Cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) was used to observe the viability level of OGSCs in mice cultured in vitro by TG of 3.75, 7.5, and 15 µg·mL~(-1). Immunofluorescence technology and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) were used to detect the protein and gene expression level of OGSCs marker mouse vasa homologue(MVH) and octamer-binding transcription factor 4(Oct4) by TG of 3.75 µg·mL~(-1). RT-PCR detected the gene expression of neurogenic locus Notch homolog protein 1(Notch1), Hes family BHLH transcription factor 1(Hes1), and jagged canonical Notch ligand 1(Jagged1). The RNA was extracted for transcriptome analysis to analyze the mechanism of action of TG intervention on OGSCs. 3.75 µg·mL~(-1) of TG was combined with 40 ng·mL~(-1) Notch signaling pathway γ-secretagocin agonist jagged canonical notch ligand(Jagged) for administration. CCK-8 was used to detect the viability level of OGSCs. Double immunofluorescence technology was used to detect the protein co-expression of MVH with Hes1, Notch1, and Jagged1. The results showed that compared with the blank group, the TG administration group significantly inhibited the activity of OGSCs(P<0.01 or P<0.001). It could reduce the protein and gene expression of OGSC markers, namely MVH and Oct4(P<0.05, P<0.01, or P<0.001). It could significantly inhibit the gene expression of Notch1, Hes1, and Jagged1(P<0.001). Transcriptomic analysis showed that TG affected the growth and proliferation of OGSCs by intervening Jagged1, a ligand associated with the Notch signaling pathway. The experimental results showed that the combination of Notch signaling pathway γ-secretagorein agonist Jagged could significantly alleviate the decrease in OGSC viability induced by TG(P<0.001) and significantly increased the OGSC viability compared with the TG group(P<0.001). It also could significantly increase the co-expression of MVH/Jagged1, MVH/Hes1, and MVH/Notch1 proteins(P<0.01 or P<0.001). It suggested that TG play the role of γ-secretagorease inhibitors by downregulating the OGSC markers including MVH and Oct4 and Notch signaling pathway molecules such as Notch1, Hes1, and Jagged1, participate in the OGSC pathway, and mediate reproductive toxicity caused by the Notch signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVES: To construct a clinical prediction model for the impact of acupuncture on pregnancy outcomes in poor ovarian response (POR) patients, providing insights and methods for predicting pregnancy outcomes in POR patients undergoing acupuncture treatment. METHODS: Clinical data of 268 POR patients (2 cases were eliminated) primarily treated with "thirteen needle acupuncture for Tiaojing Cuyun (regulating menstruation and promoting pregnancy)" was collected from the international patient registry platform of acupuncture moxibustion (IPRPAM) from September 19, 2017 to April 30, 2023, involving 24 clinical centers including Acupuncture-Moxibustion Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. LASSO and univariate Cox regression were used to screen factors influencing pregnancy outcomes, and a multivariate Cox regression model was established based on the screening results. The best model was selected using the Akaike information criterion (AIC), and a nomogram for clinical pregnancy prediction was constructed. The prediction model was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves, and internal validation was performed using the Bootstrap method. RESULTS: (1) Age, level of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and total treatment numbers of acupuncture were independent predictors of pregnancy outcomes in POR patients receiving acupuncture (P<0.05). (2) The AIC value of the best subset-Cox multivariate model (560.6) was the smallest, indicating it as the optimal model. (3) The areas under curve (AUCs) of the clinical prediction model after 6, 12, 24, and 36 months treatment were 0.627, 0.719, 0.770, and 0.766, respectively, and in the validation group, they were 0.620, 0.704, 0.759, and 0.765, indicating good discrimination and repeatability of the prediction model. (4) The calibration curve showed that the prediction curve of the clinical prediction model was close to the ideal model's prediction curve, indicating good calibration of the prediction model. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical prediction model for the impact of acupuncture on pregnancy outcomes in POR patients based on the IPRPAM platform has good clinical application value and provides insights into predicting pregnancy outcomes in POR patients undergoing acupuncture treatment.

Background: Cordyceps militaris is recognized as a tonic in traditional Chinese medicine, and there have been documented findings on the anti-allergic properties of its extract derived from the fruiting body. Due to the limited availability of wild C. militaris, a specialized grain substrate has been devised for the solid-state fermentation of its fruiting bodies. However, the fermented grain substrate is considered waste and usually used as feeds for animals. To achieve the sustainable development goals, C. militaris-fermented grain substrate (CFGS) was collected to prepare CFGS extracts. Further, the anti-allergic properties of these extracts were assessed with the aim of exploring novel applications. Methods: The water extract and ethanol extract of CFGS were prepared, and their potential in alleviating allergic enteritis was assessed in mice with food allergy. Assessment of immunomodulatory effects included the measurement of serum antibodies and splenic cytokines. Additionally, influence of extracts on gut microbiota composition was examined through sequencing analysis of 16S rRNA gene from freshly collected feces of the mice. Results: Daily administration of the water and ethanol extracts, at doses of 50 or 250 mg/kg body weight, demonstrated a notable alleviation of allergic diarrhea and enteritis. This was accompanied by a decrease in mast cell infiltration in the duodenum and a reduction in allergen-specific IgE production in the serum. Both extracts led to a significant decrease in IL-4 secretion. Conversely, there was an increase in IFN-γ, IL-10, and TGF-ß secretion from splenocytes. Remarkably, allergic mice exhibited a distinct fecal microbiota profile compared to that of normal mice. Intriguingly, the administration of these extracts had varying effects on the fecal microbiota. Conclusion: Taken together, these findings collectively indicate the potential of CFGS extracts as promising candidates for functional foods. These extracts show promise in managing allergic enteritis and modulating gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans is the most prevalent fungal pathogen, affecting over 75% of women who have experienced candidal vaginitis. Given the identification of drug-resistant C. albicans strains, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic methods for treating vaginal Candida infection. Polysaccharide is the major bioactive component of Cordyceps militaris, known to modulate immune responses and alleviate inflammation. Sesame oil is known with anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities. METHODS: C. militaris polysaccharide was prepared and formulated with sesame oil to prepare emulsion and nanoemulsion, which are ideal mucosal delivery systems for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds concurrently. The physical property and storage stability of these formulations were illustrated, and their effects on ameliorating vaginitis were investigated in a murine model of vaginal Candida infection. RESULTS: C. militaris polysaccharide-containing nanoemulsion showed smaller particle size, lower polydispersity index, higher zeta-potential and better stability than emulsion. Intravaginal administration of C. militaris polysaccharide-containing nanoemulsion significantly attenuated C. militaris colonization and vaginitis. Notably, these formulations exerted distinct effects on modulating cell infiltration and splenic cytokine production. Moreover, different profile of vaginal microflora was observed among the treatment groups, revealing the potential action mechanisms of these formulations to mitigate vaginal Candida infection. CONCLUSION: C. militaris polysaccharide- and sesame oil-containing nanoemulsion is potential to be developed as intravaginal therapeutic strategy for C. albicans-induced vaginitis.

Objective: The benefits of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) are receiving increasing attention. Therefore, this study aims to systematically analyze the global research on the treatment of KOA by Chinese traditional non-pharmacological therapies using bibliometric analysis and present the results with a knowledge map form. Methods: Literature related to traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapies used in the treatment of KOA from 2012 to 2022 was searched from the Web of Science core database and PubMed database. CiteSpace, SCImago Graphica and VOSviewer were used to extract nations, institutions, journals, authors, references, keywords, as well as the most widely used acupoints, therapies and evaluation indexes. Results: A total of 375 literature have been included. 32 countries around the world have participated in the research. China, the United States, and Europe were at the center of the global cooperation network. The most prolific institutions and authors were from China represented by Cun-zhi Liu and Jian-feng Tu of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the institution with the highest cited frequency was University of York, and "Osteoarthritis Cartilage" was the most frequently cited journal. The most frequently cited literature was "OARSI guidelines for the non-surgical management of knee, hip, and poly articular osteoarthritis." 22 kinds of Chinese non-pharmacological therapies were used to treat KOA, among which acupuncture was the most commonly used one, and ST36 (Zusanli) and WOMAC were the most commonly selected acupoint and evaluation index. Conclusion: In the past decade, the value of Chinese non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of KOA has received widespread attention. It was a common concern of global researchers to relieve the pain of KOA patients and restore the quality of life. Under the background that acupuncture accounts for a relatively high proportion, the next step may consider how to make the balanced development of a variety of Chinese non-pharmacological therapies. In addition, the problem of how to eliminate the placebo effect maybe the direction of future research.

The naringin extraction process was optimised using response surface methodology (RSM). A central component design was adopted, which included four parameters: extraction temperature (X1), material-liquid ratio (X2), extraction time (X3), and ultrasonic frequency (X4) of 74.79 °C, 1.58 h, 1:56.51 g/mL, and 28.05 KHz, respectively. Based on these optimal extraction conditions, naringin was tested to verify the model's accuracy. Naringin yield was 36.2502 mg/g, which was equivalent to the predicted yield of 36.0124 mg/g. DM101 macroporous adsorption resin was used to purify naringin. The effects of loading concentration, loading flow rate, and sample pH on the adsorption rate of naringin and the effect of ethanol concentration on the desorption rate of naringin were investigated. The optimum conditions for naringin purification using macroporous resins were determined. The optimal loading concentration, sample solution pH, and loading flow rate were 0.075 mg/mL, 3.5, and 1.5 mL/min, respectively. Three parallel tests were conducted under these conditions, and the average naringin yield was 77.5643%. Naringin's structure was identified using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. In vitro determination of the lipid-lowering activity of naringin was also conducted. These results showed that naringin has potential applications as a functional food for lowering blood lipid levels.

Objective To screen the targets of traditional Chinese medicine-derived potential plant molluscicides based on network pharmacology and explore the mechanisms of molluscicidal actions. Methods The traditional Chinese medicines with molluscicidal actions were screened based on retrospective literature reviews, and their molluscicidal efficiency was summarized. The active ingredients and potential targets of traditional Chinese medicines were captured from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform, Unified Protein Database and literature mining using network pharmacology. The drug-active ingredient-target network was created using the software Cytoscape 3.7.2, and the key targets were subjected to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis using the Metascape software. Results A total of 27 types of snail control drugs derived from traditional Chinese medicines were screened from publications and classified into 14 categories. Network pharmacology identified 190 active ingredients, and the active ingredients with a high degree in the drug-active ingredient-target network included quercetin, linoleyl acetate, luteolin, beta-carotene, (24S)-ethylcholesta-5,22,25-trans-3beta-ol, fumarine and arctiin, with 181 corresponding potential targets screened. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that these targets were mainly located in 16 pathways, including the neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, regulation of adipocyte lipolysis and adrenergic signal in myocardial cells. Conclusions This study preliminarily demonstrates the multi-ingredient, multi-target and multi-pathway mechanisms of action of 27 molluscicides. The screened key ingredient may provide the basis for isolation, purification and pharmacological studies of molluscicides, and the screened key targets and key pathways may facilitate the illustration of mechanisms of actions of traditional Chinese medicine-derived molluscicides and development of novel green molluscicides.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of high suspension and low incision (HSLI) surgery on mixed haemorrhoids, compared with Milligan-Morgan haemorrhoidectomy. METHODS: A multi-centre, randomized, single-blind, non-inferiority clinical trial was performed. Participants with mixed haemorrhoids from Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing Rectum Hospital, Air Force Medical Center of People's Liberation Army of China, and Puyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were enrolled from September 2016 to March 2018. By using a blocked randomization scheme, participants were assigned to two groups. The experimental group was treated with HSLI, while the control group was treated with Milligan-Morgan haemorrhoidectomy. The primary outcome was the clinical effect evaluated at 12 weeks after operation. The secondary outcomes included the number of haemorrhoids treated during the operation, pain scores, use of analgesics, postoperative oedema, wound healing, incidence of anal stenosis, anorectal manometry after operation, as well as surgical duration, length of stay and total hospitalization expenses. A safety evaluation was also conducted. RESULTS: In total, 246 eligible participants were enrolled, with 123 cases in each group. There was no significant difference in the clinical effect between the two groups (100.00% vs. 99.19%, P>0.05). Compared with the control group, the number of external haemorrhoids treated during the operation and the pain scores after operation were significantly reduced in the experimental group (P<0.05 or P<0.01); the patient number with wound healing at 2 weeks after operation and the functional length of anal canal at 12 weeks after operation were significantly increased in the experimental group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of anal stenosis, the numbers of patients using analgesics and patients with postoperative oedema between the two groups after operation (P>0.05). The surgical duration and length of stay in the experimental group were significantly longer than those in the control group, and the total hospitalization expense was significantly higher than that in the control group (all P<0.05). No adverse events were reported in either group during the whole trial or follow-up period. CONCLUSION: HSLI had the advantages of preserving the skin of anal canal completely, alleviating postsurgical pain and promoting rapid recovery after operation. (Registration No. ChiCTR1900022883).

BACKGROUND: Globally, more than 170 million people are infected with hepatitis C virus, a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The Yinchenhao Decoction (YCHD) is a classic formula comprising three herbal medicines. This decoction have long been used in China for clinically treating acute and chronic infectious hepatitis and other liver and gallbladder damp heat-accumulation disorders. METHODS: In this study, we identified 32 active ingredients and 200 hepatitis C proteins and established a compound-predicted target network and a hepatitis C protein-protein interaction network by using Cytoscape 3.6.1. Then, we systematically analyzed the potential targets of the YCHD for the treatment of hepatitis C. Finally, molecular docking was applied to verify the key targets. In addition, we analyzed the mechanism of action of the predicted targets by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and gene ontology analyses. RESULTS: This study adopted a network pharmacology approach, mainly comprising target prediction, network construction, module detection, functional enrichment analysis, and molecular docking to systematically investigate the mechanisms of action of the YCHD in hepatitis C. The targets of the YCHD in the treatment of hepatitis C mainly involved PIK3CG, CASP3, BCL2, CASP8, and MMP1. The module and pathway enrichment analyses showed that the YCHD had the potential to influence varieties of biological pathways, including the TNF signaling pathway, Ras signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, FoxO signaling pathway, and pathways in cancer, that play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C. CONCLUSION: The results of this study preliminarily verified the basic pharmacological effects and related mechanisms of the YCHD in the treatment of hepatitis C.

Torreya grandis Fort. ex Lindl. is a plant belonging to the Taxaceae family and Torreya grandis cv. Merrillii is the only grafted and thoroughbred species belonging to this species. In this study, we extracted five different seed oils, including T. grandis seed oil (TGSO), T. grandis "Xiangyafei" seed oil (XYSO), T. grandis "Zhimafei" seed oil (ZMSO), T. grandis "Majus"seed oil (TGMSO), and T. grandis "cunguangfei" seed oil (CGSO) using physical pressure. The resulting extracts were analyzed to determine their fatty acid composition, antioxidant activity, and inhibitory activity towards tyrosinase. The results of the antioxidant activity assays revealed that XYSO and ZMSO exhibited much greater DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power than TGSO. Notably, all five of the seed oils showed dose-dependent inhibitory activity towards tyrosinase. XYSO and TGSO gave the highest activities of all of the seed oils tested in the current study against monophenolase and diphenolase, with IC50 values of 227.0 and 817.5µg/mL, respectively. The results of this study show that wild TGSOs exhibit strong antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition activities. These results therefore suggest that wild TGSOs could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidant agents and tyrosinase inhibitors.

Abelmoschus esculentus L. has favorable nutritional/medicinal features. We found the content of total flavonoids in flower extract to be the highest (788.56 mg/g) of all the different parts of A. esculentus; according to high-performance liquid chromatography, the quercetin-3-O-[ß-D-glu-(1 → 6)]-ß-D-glucopyranoside content was 122.13 mg/g. Protective effects of an extract of the total flavonoids of A. esculentus flowers (AFF) on transient cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (TCI-RI) were investigated. Compared with the model group, mice treated with AFF (300 mg/kg) for 7 days showed significantly reduced neurologic deficits, infarct area, and histologic changes in brain tissue, accompanied by increased contents of superoxide dismutase, whereas contents of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde decreased. AFF upregulated the expression of Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1. These data suggest that AFF protects against TCI-RI by scavenging free radicals and activating the Nrf2-ARE pathway.

BACKGROUND: Hypomagnesemia was identified as a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). However, the effects of magnesium (Mg) on vascular calcification (VC) have not been fully elucidated. Thus, we aim to determine the effects of Mg citrate (MgCit) on VC in CRF rats. METHODS: Rats were divided into 5 groups: group 1 (normal diet), group 2 (normal diet with MgCit), group 3 (the VC model of CRF induced by 0.75% adenine and 0.9% phosphorus diet from day 1 to day 28), group 4 (group 3 treated with low-dose MgCit from day 1 to day 42), and group 5 (same as group 3 except the high-dose MgCit). All rats were killed at day 43 with collection of blood and aortas. Then, serum biochemical parameters, VC-related staining, calcium and P contents, alkaline phosphatase contents and activity, expression of alpha smooth muscle actin, and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) in aortas were assessed. RESULTS: Group 3 had extensive VC. The VC degree decreased in groups 4 and 5 in a dose-depended manner with reduced calcium content, P levels, alkaline phosphatase content and activity, and protein levels of RUNX2 and increased protein levels of alpha smooth muscle actin in aortas. CONCLUSIONS: MgCit exerted a protective role in VC in adenine-induced CRF rats; thus, it may be a potential drug for the prevention of VC in patients with CRF.

Our research was designed for on-line detection of multi-index in the concentration process of Ganmaoling granules by integration of near infrared spectroscopy and automatic control system. First, on-line detection system was set up in the concentration tank for Ganmaoling granules production. Spectra were scanned and values of chlorogenic acid, linarin, solid content and relative density were measured. Models of partial least squares regression were built and imported into near infrared workstation. By connecting the control system, real-time multi-index values were determined automatically in the concentration process. Results showed that correlation coefficients of chlorogenic acid, linarin, solid content and relative density models were 0.963, 0.989, 0.993 and 0.918, respectively. Relative standard errors of prediction were 3.71%, 4.28%, 4.17% and 0.24%, respectively, indicating a good performance and high accuracy of the models. Real-time data collection during the whole process was measured by the near infrared detecting system in the control system. In conclusion, the near infrared detection system is able to perform real-time automatic determination of multiindex in the concentration process of Ganmaoling granules with significant advantages.

To investigate the changes in intestinal absorption of ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re and ginsenosides Rd after combined administration of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma extract and Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, in order to confirm whether the combined administration is scientific and rational, and provide experimental basis for pharmaceutical studies of the formula. An in vivo single-pass perfusion method was performed to study the effect of various concentrations of ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd on the intestinal absorption at duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon. The concentrations of ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd were determined by RP-HPLC.The absorption rate constant (Ka) and the apparent absorption coefficient(Papp) of ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd were calculated.The result showed that ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd had a high absorption rate on upper portion of the small intestine. The drug concentration had not significantly impact on the absorption rate, suggesting that ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd were absorbed via passive diffusion.Volatile oil of Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma had obvious effect in enhancing intestinal absorption of ginsenosides Rg1, ginsenosides Re, ginsenosides Rd, indicating that the combined administration of Ginseng extract and Acorus tatarinowii Schott is scientific and rational.

Electrical skin resistance (ESR) measurements were performed with a four-electrode impedance detector at 10 points bilaterally on the first day of and the third day after menstruation in 48 healthy volunteers and 46 primary dysmenorrhea (PD) patients, to assess whether ESR changes of acupuncture points can reflect menstrual pain or not. The results showed statistical reductions in ESR imbalance ratio between left and right side that were detected at SP8 (Diji) and GB39 (Xuanzhong) (P < 0.05), and a statistical increase was detected at SP6 (Sanyinjiao) (P = 0.05) on the first day of menstruation compared with those values on the third day after menstruation in dysmenorrhea group. No significant differences were detected at other points within and between two groups (P > 0.05). This study showed that the imbalance of ESR at uterine-relevant points in PD patients is not significantly different from those of healthy women on both the 1st day of and the 3rd day after menstruation. The ESR imbalance ratio of certain points can either be lower or higher during menstruation in PD patients. The ESR property of acupuncture points needs to be investigated in further clinical trials with appropriate points, diseases, larger sample sizes, and optimal device.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is often used for primary dysmenorrhea. But there is no convincing evidence due to low methodological quality. We aim to assess immediate effect of acupuncture at specific acupoint compared with unrelated acupoint and nonacupoint on primary dysmenorrhea. METHODS: The Acupuncture Analgesia Effect in Primary Dysmenorrhoea-II is a multicenter controlled trial conducted in six large hospitals of China. Patients who met inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to classic acupoint (N = 167), unrelated acupoint (N = 167), or non-acupoint (N = 167) group on a 1:1:1 basis. They received three sessions with electro-acupuncture at a classic acupoint (Sanyinjiao, SP6), or an unrelated acupoint (Xuanzhong, GB39), or nonacupoint location, respectively. The primary outcome was subjective pain as measured by a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Measurements were obtained at 0, 5, 10, 30, and 60 minutes following the first intervention. In addition, patients scored changes of general complaints using Cox retrospective symptom scales (RSS-Cox) and 7-point verbal rating scale (VRS) during three menstrual cycles. Secondary outcomes included VAS score for average pain, pain total time, additional in-bed time, and proportion of participants using analgesics during three menstrual cycles. FINDINGS: Five hundred and one people underwent random assignment. The primary comparison of VAS scores following the first intervention demonstrated that classic acupoint group was more effective both than unrelated acupoint (-4.0 mm, 95% CI -7.1 to -0.9, P = 0.010) and nonacupoint (-4.0 mm, 95% CI -7.0 to -0.9, P = 0.012) groups. However, no significant differences were detected among the three acupuncture groups for RSS-Cox or VRS outcomes. The per-protocol analysis showed similar pattern. No serious adverse events were noted. CONCLUSION: Specific acupoint acupuncture produced a statistically, but not clinically, significant effect compared with unrelated acupoint and nonacupoint acupuncture in primary dysmenorrhea patients. Future studies should focus on effects of multiple points acupuncture on primary dysmenorrhea.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cumulative analgesic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Xuanzhong (GB 39) and non-acupoint for primary dysmenorrhea patients. METHODS: A total of 200 patients with primary dysmenorrhea were randomly assigned to Sanyinjiao (SP 6, a dysmenorrheal-relieving related acupoint) group, Xuanzhong (GB 39, an unrelated acupoint) group, non-acupoint group and control group, with 50 cases in each group. The participants were administered with EA (2 Hz/100 Hz, 0.5-1.6 mA) at SP 6, GB 39 and non-acupoint for 30 min, once daily for 3 consecutive days. The intensity of the pain was ranked from 0 (no pain) to 100 (intolerable) using visual analogue scale (VAS) and RSS (Cox retrospective symptom scale) severity rating scores (RSS-COX 2) before and after three interventions. RESULTS: In comparison with the control group, VAS and RSS-COX 2 scores were significantly lower in the SP 36, GB 39 and non-acupoint groups (P < 0.001, P < 0.05), suggesting an alleviation of the pain severity after EA treatment. No significant differences were found among the three treatment groups in both VAS and RSS-COX 2 scores (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of SP 6, GB 39 and non-acupoint has a good cumulative analgesic effect in patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

Based on the retrieval of literatures at home and abroad from 2000 to 2011, the evaluation indices of acupuncture clinical trials for primary dysmenorrhea (PD) were analyzed. The results indicated that in domestic area the reports were more concerned with the improvement of clinical symptoms and signs while paid less attention on the objective evaluation methodology, on the other hand, the studies abroad generally took many kinds of scales as their evaluation indices and focused on the patients' quality and activity of daily life. The authors suggeste that our clinical research, according to the designed intentions, should combine the general indicators with the specific indicators of diseases to have a more comprehensive evaluation on the effects of acupuncture for PD in clinical practice.

Acupuncture prescription is the key and effectiveness guarantee to acupuncture treatment. Proper selection of acupoint is directly related to the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. Several issues were discussesed, which were acupoint indications, clinical syndrome differentiation and acupoints selection. Acupuncturists should grasp the acupoints characteristic and pay attention to syndrome differentiation. Also they should have flexible selection of acupoints and keep pace with research updates when facing clinical problems in order to maximize the curative effect of acupuncture.
