RESUMO

Objective: We aimed to assess the impact of an expressive arts therapy combined with progressive muscle relaxation following music on mental health (anxiety and hope) in patients with gynecological malignancies undergoing surgery. Methods: This was a nonrandomized controlled trial. Eligible patients had a primary or recurrent gynecological malignancy scheduled to be treated with surgery. The intervention consisted of three sessions (preoperation, postoperation, and predischarge) during the perioperative period. Firstly, before starting the first session of intervention, all patients completed three questionnaires including a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), a Herth Hope Index (HHI), and a State Anxiety Inventory (SAI), and the intervention group patients also had to complete the SAI questionnaire again after completing the intervention. Secondly, after the second session of intervention, all patients completed the SAI questionnaire, with the intervention group completed the SAI questionnaire before the intervention. Thirdly, after the third session of intervention, all patients completed HHI and SAI questionnaires, with the intervention group completed the SAI questionnaire before the intervention. Also, to subjectively rate the benefit of expressive arts therapy, the intervention group additionally completed a separate, supplemental questionnaire. Results: A total of 116 patients were enrolled and 110 included in the final analysis. No group differences were found for HHI scores between the intervention and control participants (Cohen's d = 0.19, P=0.31), although there was a substantial improvement in intervention participants' HHI scores compared to the standard care control participants. There was a statistically significant improvement in intervention participants' SAI from preintervention to postintervention of preoperation (Cohen's d = -0.23, P=0.002) and postoperation (Cohen's d = -0.34, P ≤ 0.001). However, no differences were observed for the predischarge period (Cohen's d = -0.09, P=0.118). Besides, a supplemental questionnaire indicated that 52 (98%) patients felt that expressive arts therapy was beneficial. Conclusions: Expressive art therapy combined with progressive muscle relaxation under music may be of some effect on alleviating perioperative anxiety in patients with gynecologic malignancies. Therefore, further relevant studies with large samples and multicenters are urgently needed to provide a reliable evidence-based basis for perioperative psychological care of patients with gynecologic malignancies and to promote rapid recovery of patients. It is recommended that further art therapy studies to examine the impact of patient-tailored arts therapy interventions on spiritual well-being in patients with gynecological malignancies, especially in the perioperative period.

RESUMO

This study was to investigate the effects of Bacillus subtilis on production performance and bone pathophysiological characteristics of layers. Twenty-four 48-week-old Lohmann Pink-shell laying hens were randomly divided into two groups: a basic diet (control) and the basic diet mixed with Bacillus subtilis (0.5 g/kg) for a 60-day trial. Statistically, independent-sample t-test was used to assess the treatment differences. The results showed that Bacillus subtilis supplementation improved the percent of marketable eggs (p < 0.05) with reduced numbers of broken and soft-shelled eggs but had no effects on egg weight, height of albumen, yolk color, and Haugh unit (p > 0.05). Bacillus subtilis supplement also elevated maximum load (p = 0.06), maximum stress (p = 0.01), stiffness (p < 0.01), and Young's modulus (p < 0.01) but suppressed maximum strain (p = 0.06) in the femur. In addition, compared with control birds, phosphorous concentration (p < 0.01) was reduced in serum at day 61 but increased in the femur (p < 0.05) in Bacillus subtilis fed birds. Bacillus subtilis fed birds also had lower magnesium concentrations in both femur (p = 0.04) and feces (p = 0.09). Furthermore, Bacillus subtilis increased plasma estrogen concentration (p = 0.01) and femur TNF receptor superfamily member 11b (OPG) expression (p < 0.05) but reduced plasma IL-1 (p < 0.01) and TNF-α (p < 0.01) concentrations. These results indicate that Bacillus subtilis could be used as a health promotor to reduce overproduction-induced inflammation and associated bone damage and to increase marketable egg production. The data provide evidence for developing a management strategy to use Bacillus subtilis as a feed additive to improve marketable egg production and health and welfare status of laying hens.

RESUMO

BuShen HuoXue decoction (BSHXD) has been used to treat patients with unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). However, the chemical compounds and mechanism by which BSHXD exerts its therapeutic and systemic effects to promote the proliferation of decidual stromal cells (DSCs) has not been elucidated. This work sought to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanism of BSHXD in terms of inflammatory factors IL-17A in DSCs in vitro because of the critical roles of inflammation, apoptosis, and immunity in the development and progression of pregnancy loss. Twelve migratory chemical compounds from BSHXD extract were qualitatively analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). DSCs were collected from normal early pregnancy (NEP) and URSA to determine whether BSHXD affects IL-17A/IL17RA via the PI3K/AKT pathway. Abnormal apoptosis and activated p-AKT were observed in URSA DSCs. RhIL-17 A, LY294002 (a PI3K pathway inhibitor), and BSHXD were individually or simultaneously administered in NEP DSCs, suggesting that BSHXD restored cell proliferation without excessive stimulation and IL-17A promotes proliferation via the PI3K/AKT pathway. Using the same intervention in URSA DSCs, qRT-PCR measured the upregulated mRNA levels of IL-17 A/IL-17RA, PI3K, AKT, p-AKT, PTEN, Bcl-2, and Bcl-xL and downregulated mRNA levels of BAD and ACT1 after treatment with BSHXD. We demonstrated that BSHXD affected IL-17A/IL-17R via PI3K/AKT pathway to promote the proliferative activity of DSCs in URSA. These results provide a new insight to further clarify the relationship between inflammation and apoptosis and the mechanism of imbalance in the dynamic equilibrium between Th17/Treg immune cells at the maternal-fetal interface.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with Yuyin pill on clinical symptoms, levels of serum sex hormone and Th2 cytokines in patients of decreased ovarian reserve function (DOR) with liver-kidney yin deficiency, and to compare the efficacy between EA combined with Yuyin pill and Yuyin pill alone. METHODS: Sixty patients with DOR were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a control group (30 cases, 1 case dropped off). The patients in the control group were treated with Yuyin pill, 1 pill each time, 3 times a day. Based on the treatment of the control group, the patients in the observation group were additionally treated with acupuncture at Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3), Guilai (ST 29), Zigong (EX-CA 1), Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Taixi (KI 3) and Taichong (LR 3); EA was applied at bilateral Zusanli (ST 36) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6), with continuous wave, in frequency of 20 Hz and current intensity of 1 to 4 mA, for 20 min. The treatment was given 3 times a week. All the patients terminated treatment during menstrual period, and the treatment was given for 3 continuous menstrual cycles. The menstrual condition score and systemic symptom score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. The levels of serum sex hormones on 2nd to 3rd day of menstruation, including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E2), and the serums levels of interleukin (IL) -4 and IL-10 secreted by Th2 cytokines were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. RESULTS: After the treatment, the menstruation condition scores and systemic symptom scores in the two groups were reduced (P<0.05), and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After the treatment, the levels of serum FSH, LH and FSH/LH were reduced (P<0.05), and the E2 levels were increased in the two groups (P<0.05), and the levels of FSH, LH in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05), and the E2 level was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After the treatment, the levels of serum IL-4 and IL-10 in the two groups were increased (P<0.05), and the levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA combined with Yuyin pill could significantly improve menstruation, systemic symptoms and serum sex hormone levels in patients of decreased ovarian reserve function with liver-kidney yin deficiency, which may restore ovarian function by up-regulating the expression of Th2 cytokines.

RESUMO

To investigate the effect of Fuyanshu Capsules combined with Western medicine antibiotics on symptoms and inflammatory factors IL-10 and IL-1ß in patients with pelvic inflammatory disease and its possible mechanism. Totally 112 patients with pelvic inflammatory disease of damp-heat stagnation treated since April 2017 to April 2018 were randomly divided into treatment group( group A,57 cases) and control group( group B,55 cases). The treatment group was given Fuyanshu Capsules for 56 d,and levofloxacin hydrochloride tablets and metronidazole tablets for 14 d. The control group was given Fuyanshu Capsules as its analogue. The curative rate, effective rate and inefficiency, serum IL-10 and IL-1ß levels were compared between the two groups. The curative effect was evaluated with McCormack score and traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) syndrome score. The recurrence rate and chronic pelvic pain were followed up after one menstrual cycle. It was found that the curative rate and effective rate of group A were higher than those of group B after treatment. After 28 d of treatment, there was a difference in the effective rate of TCM syndrome score between group A and group B( 62. 71% vs 8. 47%,P < 0. 01). After 56 d of treatment, serum IL-10 increased, while IL-1ß decreased in group A,which was significantly different from that in group B( P<0. 01). The recurrence rate of PID and chronic pelvic pain in group A were significantly lower than those in group B( P<0. 01). The results showed that Fuyanshu Capsules combined with levofloxacin and metronidazole could alleviate the clinical symptoms and signs of chronic pelvic inflammation of damp-heat stagnation type, reduce the recurrence rate of pelvic inflammation, relieve pelvic pain, and alleviate the inflammation status of patients by regulating the expression of IL-10 and IL-1ß in peripheral serum.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Systemic chemotherapy serves as an adjuvant treatment for post-operation patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and provides curative option for the patients with unresectable HCC. However, its efficiency is largely limited because of the high incidence of chemo-resistance. Increasing evidence has shown that tumor initiating cells (TICs) not only have the ability to self-renew and drive the initiation and progression of cancer, but also exhibit greater resistance to conventional chemo- and radio-therapies than non-TICs. It was the aim of this study to investigate the effects of ATRA with and without cisplatin on TIC differentiation and apoptosis in human HCC. METHODS: In the present study, we evaluated the TICs of HCC cell differentiation induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and developed a novel chemotherapeutic approach to HCC, by characterizing the function of combinatorial treatment with cis-diammineplatinum(II) (cisplatin) and ATRA in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: ATRA effectively induced differentiation of TICs, which potentiated the cytotoxic effects of cisplatin. The combinatorial treatment of ATRA acid and cisplatin reduced protein kinase B (AKT) (Thr308) phosphorylation, and promoted apoptosis of HCC cells more significantly than treatment with cisplatin alone. In addition, the combined treatment with the two drugs exerted stronger inhibition on either HCC cell migration in vitro or metastasis in vivo, when compared to the treatment with either drug alone. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that ATRA could significantly improve the effect of cisplatin, which is at least partially attributed to ATRA-induced differentiation of HCC TICs, and the subsequent decrease in this chemo-resistant subpopulation.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis, a progressive disease characterized by the accumulation of lipids and fibrous elements in the arteries, is a most important contributor to cardiovascular diseases. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytopolyphenol compound and shows the ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, beneficial effects of resveratrol on the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, including regulation of vasodilator and vasoconstrictor production, inhibition of oxidative stress/reactive oxygen species generation, anti-inflammation, inhibition of modification of low-density lipoproteins, anti-platelet aggregation, and its abilities to impede progression and modulate complications of atherosclerosis, are discussed.
