RESUMO

The mechanisms of the P. oxalicum SL2-mediated microbial community on phosphorus solubilization and Pb stabilization were investigated through a 90-day soil experiment. In the treatments inoculated with P. oxalicum SL2, the amount of P. oxalicum SL2-GFP remained at 77.8%-138.6% of the initial inoculation amount after 90 days, and the available phosphorus (AP) content increased 21.7%-40.8% while EDTA-Pb decreased 29.9%-43.2% compared with CK treatment. SEM-EDS results showed that P. oxalicum SL2 changed the agglomeration degree of microaggregates and promoted the combination of Pb with C and O elements. These phenomena were enhanced when applied with Ca3(PO4)2. Microbial community analysis showed that P. oxalicum SL2 improved soil microbial activity, in which the fungi absolute abundance increased about 15 times within 90 days. Correlation analyses and a partial least-squares path model showed that the activation of Penicillium, Ascobolus, Humicola, and Spizellomyces in a fungal community increased the content of oxalate and AP, which directly decreased EDTA-Pb content, while the change of Bacillus, Ramlibacter, Gemmatimonas, and Candidatus Solibacter in the bacterial community regulated Fe/Mn/S/N cycle-related functions, thus promoting the conversion of Pb to oxidizable state. Our findings highlight that P. oxalicum SL2 enhanced the microbial-induced phosphate precipitation process by activating soil microbial communities and regulating their ecological functions.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil has become a worldwide concern and severely endangered human health. Nano hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) is a practical material to manage paddy Cd pollution, but its dosage should not be excessive. Based on previous studies, we validated the effect of n-HAP pre-treatment on rice Cd uptake in pot and field experiments. The results indicated that n-HAP pre-treatment effectively restricted Cd translocation in the soil-rice system. In pot experiment, when soil n-HAP concentration was 5000 mg/kg, the Cd content in the grains of n-HAP pre-treated rice was 0.171 mg/kg, decreased by 29.3% compared with normal rice (0.242 mg/kg). In field experiment, when soil n-HAP concentration was 20,000 mg/kg, the Cd content in the grains of n-HAP pre-treated rice was 0.156 mg/kg, decreased by 35.3% compared with normal rice (0.241 mg/kg). The primary mechanism was that n-HAP pre-treatment altered the formation and composition of iron plaque and therefore enhanced the Cd binding ability of iron plaque. The available N and P content and urease activity in paddy field were increased. We further investigated the impact of n-HAP on the diversity and structure of paddy microbial communities. The Chao1 and Shannon diversity indices showed no significant difference. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria was significantly decreased by n-HAP, indicating that Cd pollution might be alleviated. Desulfobacterota, Gemmatimonadota, and Geobacteraceae were significantly enriched by n-HAP. The declining relative abundance of Basidiomycota and the increasing relative abundance of other fungal taxa also suggested that n-HAP could alleviate Cd toxicity in soil.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as fungicides in agriculture. Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous contaminant in paddy soil. The present study was focused on the adsorption behavior of CuO NPs with regard to As as well as the characteristics of the microbial community changes in As-contaminated soil-rice systems in response to CuO NPs. The study found that CuO NPs could be a temporary sink of As in soil; a high dose of CuO NPs promoted the release of As from crystalline iron oxide, which increased the As content in the liquid phase. The study also found that the As bioavailability changed significantly when the dose of CuO NPs was higher than 50 mg kg-1 in the soil-rice system. The addition of 100 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the microbial diversity and the abundance of genes involved in As cycling, decreased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, and decreased As accumulation in grains. Treatment with 500 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, decreased Fe plaques, and increased As accumulation in rice. The adverse effects of CuO NPs on crops and associated risks need to be considered carefully.

AIMS: To explore compliance with oral nutritional supplementation (ONS) and to identify the risk factors for noncompliance among gastric cancer patients based on the health belief model (HBM). METHODS: This prospective, observational study included gastric cancer patients at nutritional risk who were prescribed ONS from July to September 2020. Demographic factors, clinical factors, ONS-related factors, social factors and variables derived from the HBM were collected. The outcome of interest was compliance with ONS, which was measured by self-reported intake of ONS. Uni- and multivariate analyses of potential risk factors for noncompliance were performed. RESULTS: A total of 162 gastric cancer patients in the preoperative and adjuvant chemotherapy periods were analyzed. The compliance rate with ONS was 24.7%. Univariate analysis identified thirteen variables as risk factors for decreased compliance. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that ONS compliance was independently associated with the treatment period, perceived barriers to ONS, the motivation to take ONS, and the timing of taking ONS. CONCLUSION: This study showed that overall ONS compliance among gastric cancer patients was notably low. Patients in the chemotherapy treatment period who took ONS at random times each day perceived more barriers to taking ONS and had a lower level of motivation were associated with lower compliance with ONS.

PROBLEM: Psychological and symptom disturbances seriously affect hospitalized children's subjective experiences of hospitalization and their prognosis. We systematically reviewed the effects of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) on pain, anxiety, depression, stress, blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR) in hospitalized children and teenagers. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using the English-language electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, Open Grey and Google Scholar, and the Chinese databases CNKI, Sinomed, Vip, and WanFang. These databases were searched through July 15, 2020. SAMPLE: Eight studies, including four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and four quasi-experimental studies were included, with a total of 348 participants. RESULTS: Hospitalized children and teenagers with AAT had less pain (standardized mean difference = -0.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.77 to -0.22; P < 0.001), lower systolic blood pressure (mean difference [MD] = -4.85; 95% CI, -9.50 to -0.21; P= 0.04), higher diastolic blood pressure (MD = 4.95; 95% CI, 1.90 to 8.00; P = 0.001) than controls, while there was no significant difference in depression, anxiety, stress, or HR. CONCLUSION: As an adjuvant to traditional treatment, AAT was beneficial for controlling pain and BP in hospitalized children and teenagers. IMPLICATION: AAT may be an effective strategy for relieving pain and controlling BP in hospitalized children and teenagers, especially those with cancer. High-quality RCTs conducted or supported by nurses on the effects of AAT are needed.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of art therapy on cancer patients' quality of life and physical and psychological symptoms. METHODS: The databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Clinical Trial.gov, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched from their inception up to 20 August 2019. Trials examining the effects of art therapy on physical and psychological symptoms and quality of life versus a control group were included. The methodological quality of the included randomised controlled trials was assessed using the risk of bias tool of Cochrane Handbook. Meanwhile, the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the non-randomised studies. RESULTS: Twelve studies involving 587 cancer patients were included. The results revealed that art therapy significantly reduced anxiety symptoms (standard mean difference [SMD] = -0.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.90, 0.02], p = .04), depression symptoms (SMD = -0.47, 95% CI [-0.72, 0.21], p < .01), and fatigue (SMD = -0.38, 95% CI [-0.68, -0.09], p = .01) in cancer patients. Art therapy also significantly improved the quality of life of cancer patients (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.18, 0.68], p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Art therapy had a positive effect on quality of life and symptoms in cancer patients and can be used as a complementary treatment for cancer patients.

Fibrosis is a key feature of various cardiovascular diseases and compromises cardiac systolic and diastolic performance. The lack of effective anti-fibrosis drugs is a major contributor to the increasing prevalence of heart failure. The present study was performed to investigate whether the iridoid aucubin alleviates cardiac fibroblast activation and its underlying mechanisms. Neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts were incubated with aucubin (1, 10, 20, 50 µM) followed by transforming growth factor ß1 (TGFß1, 10 ng/mL) stimulation for 24 h. Fibrosis proliferation was measured by cell counting kit-8 assay. The differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts was determined by measuring the expression of α-smooth muscle actin. Then, the expressions levels of cardiac fibrosis-related proteins in myofibroblasts were analyzed by western blot and real-time PCR to confirm the anti-fibrosis effect of aucubin. As a result, aucubin suppressed TGFß1-induced proliferation in fibroblasts and inhibited the TGFß1-induced activation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts. In addition, aucubin further attenuated fibrosis-related protein expression in myofibroblasts. Furthermore, this protective effect was related to increased adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation and decreased mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) phosphorylation, which was confirmed by an mTOR inhibitor (rapamycin), an AMPK agonist (AICAR) and an AMPKα inhibitor compound C. Collectively, our findings suggest that aucubin protects against TGFß1-induced fibroblast proliferation, activation and function by regulating the AMPKα/mTOR signal axis.

Evodiamine, a major component of Evodia rutaecarpa, can protect the myocardium against injury induced by atherosclerosis and ischemia-reperfusion. However, the effect of evodiamine against cardiac fibrosis remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the possible effect and mechanism involved in the function of evodiamine on isoproterenol-induced cardiac fibrosis and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Isoproterenol was used to induce cardiac fibrosis in mice, and evodiamine was gavaged simultaneously. After 14 days, cardiac function was accessed by echocardiography. The extent of cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy was evaluated by pathological and molecular analyses. The extent of endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition was evaluated by the expression levels of CD31, CD34, α-smooth muscle actin, and vimentin by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot analysis. After 14 days, the heart weight/body weight ratio and heart weight/tibia length ratio revealed no significant difference between the isoproterenol group and the isoproterenol/evodiamine-treated groups, whereas the increased heart weight was reduced in the isoproterenol/evodiamine-treated groups. Echocardiography revealed that interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness at the end diastole decreased in the evodiamine-treated groups. Evodiamine reduced isoproterenol-induced cardiac fibrosis as accessed by normalization in collagen deposition and gene expression of hypertrophic and fibrotic markers. Evodiamine also prevented endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition as evidenced by the increased expression levels of CD31 and CD34, decreased expression levels of α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin, and increased microvascular density in the isoproterenol/evodiamine-treated mice hearts. Furthermore, isoproterenol-induced activation of transforming growth factor-ß1/Smad signal was also blunted by evodiamine. Therefore, evodiamine may prevent isoproterenol-induced cardiac fibrosis by regulating endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition, which is probably mediated by the blockage of the transforming growth factor-ß1/Smad pathway.
