Nowadays, medicinal plants are used to overcome the side effects of prescription drugs in modern medicine. Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) derived from the root of the licorice plant is one of the plant compounds whose effectiveness has been confirmed in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD). Liposome thin film hydration method was used to synthesize chitosan-coated liposomes containing GA. In the present study, chitosan-coated liposome was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The FTIR spectrum confirmed the coating of liposomes by chitosan polymer.  Liposome coating leads to an increase in the size and values of zeta potential. The 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay of chitosan-coated liposomes containing GA confirmed that it has no cytotoxicity toward fibroblasts cell line, therefore confirming their cytocompatibility. Overall, drug loading, release and cytotoxicity were evaluated and it was found that chitosan decreased the release rate of GA. It seems; chitosan-coated liposomes may be a suitable system for delivering liposomal GA in the treatment of IBD.

BACKGROUND: In medicinal plants, selection, reproduction and preservation of important genotypes are very necessary. Nowadays, using tissue culture and regeneration techniques of medicinal plants under in vitro conditions has been able to proliferate medicinal plants widely, which is much higher than traditional methods of vegetative propagation. Maca (Lepidium meyenii), is an industrial plant whose root is the usable part. Maca has valuable medicinal effects such as sexual enhancement and reproductive power, infertility treatment, improved sperm count and quality, anti-stress, osteoporosis prevention and more. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was conducted to induce callus and regeneration of Maca. First, MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of Kinetin, Naphthaleneacetic acid and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [0.5, 1 and 2 µM respectively] and control were compared for callus induction from root and leaves. After 38 days of incubation, the first callus appeared, after 50 days of callus induction and after 79 days regeneration occurred. The callus induction experiment was performed for the study of the effect of three explants (leaf, stem and root) and seven hormone levels. The regeneration experiment was carried out by studying the effect of three explants (leaf, stem and root) on eight levels of the hormone. The results of data analysis on callus induction showed that the effects of explants, hormones and their interactions on callus induction percentage were highly significant but not significant on callus growth rate. The results of regression analysis showed that explants, hormones and their interactions had no significant effect on regeneration percentage. CONCLUSION: Based on our results, the best medium for inducing callus was Hormone 2,4-D [2 µM] and Kinetin [0.5 µM], in which the highest percentage of callus induction was in leaf explants (62%). And the lowest were in stem (30%) and root (27%) explants. According to the comparison of the mean, the best environment for regeneration of the environment was 4 µM 6-Benzylaminopurine 2.5 + Thidiazuron, in which the highest percentage of regeneration was in leaf explant (87%) and stem (69%) and the lowest in root explant (12). %).

Plant extracts have been shown to be effective in treating a variety of ailments; however their hydrophilic nature and unique chemical structure have caused significant hurdles due to their low bioavailability. Phytosomes technology is used to improve the absorption of phytoconstituents that are difficult to absorb. Among the leading deaths in the society is malignancy. The aforementioned consumes remained a big issue for modern chemotherapy since it has yet to be treated in an efficient manner. The goal of this study is to outline the most recent research on the potential use of phytosome complexes for cancer therapy, as well as the formulation processes and mechanism of transportation through phytosomes.Nanotechnology has paved the way for cancer therapy by altering key features of medications and their carriers. Novel drug delivery systems are used to transfer antitumor drugs to the particular site via different nanostructures. Among several unique drug delivery systems, phytosomes are a creative way to transfer phytoactive compounds to the site of action, and several phytosomes formulations are now being used in clinical settings. Phytoconstituents' anti-cancer activities are increased by phytosomal formulations.

About 80% higher risk of amputation resulted from microbial infection was indicated for patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Micro and nano-scaffolds made of natural polymers specifically cellulose, chitosan, and collagen can donate the biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioavailability properties appropriate to  accelerate wound closure before microbial biofilm formation. Antimicrobial activity of these wound dressings can be improved by incorporation of bioactive compounds extracted from medicinal plant species such as curcumin. Low water solubility and poor bioavailability are recognized as two main disadvantages of curcumin, lipophilic phytopolyphenol, which could be controlled by targeted polymeric micro and nano-scaffolds. Consequently, this review has discussed the capacity and challenges of these types of formulations according to recent investigations.

Excessive use of refined flour, solid fats, and sugar in preparing baked products are considered to be unhealthy and is intricately linked with the development of lifestyle diseases. Replacing refined flour with whole wheat flour and solid fats with cold-pressed oil serves as an alternate option. The study was aimed at evaluating the physicochemical properties, nutrient composition, sensory attributes, and shelf life of cupcakes enriched using pomegranate seed oil (PSO). Vanilla and chocolate cupcake variants were prepared using 25 and 50% of PSO. A sensory panel consisting of 30 semi-trained participants was selected for evaluating the formulated products using a five-point hedonic scale. Nutrient content was estimated using standard techniques. The stability of the formulated product was determined by evaluating the physicochemical traits and microbial growth on the 0th, 4th, and 7th day. Mean scores of the sensorial analysis showed that the incorporation of PSO in cupcakes was highly accepted by the panel members. Chocolate cupcake containing 50% of PSO was found to be the most preferred product (3.53±0.94), followed by vanilla cupcake containing 25% of PSO (3.4±0.62). The moisture, protein, and fat content of chocolate cupcakes containing 25% of PSO were high. Cupcakes prepared with PSO can be stored for four days at room temperature. GC-MS analysis showed the presence of punicic acid, oleic acid, tocopherols, campesterol, sitosterols, stigmasterol, and α-tocopheryl acetate as pre-dominant fatty acid in unheated and heated PSO. In conclusion, cupcakes prepared using PSO showed acceptable physicochemical qualities and sensory properties which indicated its successful consumption by people affected with metabolic disorders.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) causes a decrease in renal function which leads to failure in balancing electrolyte, fluid and acid-base homoeostasis. AKI is a damaging and life-threatening disorder, but it can be managed if identified earlier. This study aimed to investigate the possible nephroprotective effect of Helianthus annuus seeds extract against gentamicin (GM) induced nephrotoxicity in male mice. The control group (0.5 ml normal saline i.p.,), Gentamycin (GM) group (GM 100 mg/kg i.p), silymarin + GM group (silymarin 50 mg/kg and GM 100 mg/kg i.p.,), H. annuus extract (HAE) and GM, group (HAE 250 mg/kg and GM 100 mg/kg i.p), HAE2 + GM group (HAE2; 500 mg/kg and GM 100 mg/kg i.p) and H. annuus oil (HAO) + GM (HAO 2.5 ml/kg and GM 100 mg/kg i.p). Serum creatinine, urea and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were significantly (P< 0.001) elevated in the GM group compared to the control group. The elevated level of serum creatinine, urea and BUN were decreased significantly (P<0.001) in groups treated with HAE and HAO extracts compared to the GM group. The kidney histopathological study from the GM group showed tubular necrosis, vacuolation and fibrosis. However, the animal that received HAE and HAO showed no tubular necrosis and vacuolation. Only mild inflammation was observed compared to the GM group. In conclusion, the extract caused marked radical scavenger and protected the kidney from oxidative damage of GM. H. annuus seeds contain strong antioxidant compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, tocopherols and minerals, which could be responsible for the current show.

Vegetable oils, whose hydrocarbon structure is very similar to that of petroleum products, are ideal renewable and sustainable alternatives to petroleum lubricants. Bio-lubricants are commonly synthesized by modifying the chemical structure of vegetable oils. In this study, microwave irradiation was applied to intensify the mass-transfer-limited transesterification reaction to produce trimethylolpropane triester (bio-lubricant) from camelina oil as a promising local energy crop. A rotatable RSM-BBD method was applied to find the optimal levels of experimental factors, namely reaction time (67.8 min), the catalyst concentration (1.4 wt%) and the molar ratio (3.5). In these optimal levels, the reaction yield of 94.3% was obtained with desirability of 0.975. The quadratic statistical model with a determination coefficient of 97.97%, a standard deviation of 0.91 and a variation coefficient of 1% was suggested as the most appropriate model by Design-Expert software. Finally, the physicochemical properties of the purified product were in accordance with the requirements of the ISO-VG22 base oil standard.

A group of protozoan parasites known as Leishmania species can cause a variety of chronic illnesses, ranging from self-healing lesions to fatal outcomes. Drug-resistant pathogens have become common due to the lack of safe and effective medications, which has sparked the development of new therapeutic interventions, particularly plant-based natural extracts. As a way to avoid chemotherapy's side effects, natural herbal remedies have drawn more attention. In addition to having anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and cosmetic properties, the secondary metabolites of plants, such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenes, have a number of positive effects on our health. Natural metabolites such as naphthoquinone, alkaloids, benzophenones, etc. that have antileishmanial and antiprotozoal activity have been the subject of extensive research. In this review paper, it can be concluded that these natural extracts can be developed into excellent therapeutic agents against Leishmaniasis.

Paspalidium flavidum (watercrown grass), a medicinal plant, is traditionally used in liver ailments and stomach problems. The hepatoprotective and gastroprotective activities of the aqueous methanol extract of Paspalidium flavidum (AMEPF) were studied in experimental animal models. Paracetamol and aspirin were used to induce hepatotoxicity and gastric ulcer in rats, respectively. Biochemical hepatic parameters, gastric pH, total acidity, ulcer index, percentage protection, nitric oxide and TNF-α were measured in AMEPF-treated groups. Moreover, GC-MS analysis of AMEPF was performed. Pretreatment with AMEPF improved the blood lipid profile and restored liver function tests in paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity. While in aspirin-induced gastric ulcer, oral administration of AMEPF significantly reduced (P<0.05) the gastric lesions, total acidity and ulcer scoring index, TNF-α with upregulation of nitric oxide when compared with the Diseased group. AMEPF exhibited anti-lipid peroxidation activity. Histopathological studies were in good agreement with the biochemical findings. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of anti-oxidant phyto-constituents, including oleic acid and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono(2-ethylhexyl) in AMEPF. This study suggested that aqueous methanol extract from the leaves of P. flavidum has beneficial hepatoprotective and gastroprotective activities related to its anti-oxidant phytochemicals.

Herbal medications or formulations are regularly recommended by clinicians as a potential therapeutic method for a variety of human ailments, including cancer. Although Prosopis juliflora extracts have shown promise in anticancer activity, the effects on prostate cancer and the accompanying molecular mechanisms of action are still unexplored. This research aims at the antioxidant, antiproliferative, and apoptosis-inducing properties of Prosopis juliflora methanolic leaves extract in human prostate cancer LNCaP cells. The antioxidant ability of the extract was assessed using the DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and two additional reducing power tests. Antitumor activity was determined using MTT cell viability tests and LDH cytotoxicity assays. The probable mechanism of apoptotic cell death was further investigated utilizing a caspase-3 activation assay and qRT-PCR mRNA expression investigations of apoptotic-related genes. The results revealed that the methanol extract of Prosopis juliflora leaves contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, and phenols, all of which have substantial antioxidant activity. In vitro anticancer tests demonstrated that extract therapy resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in cell viability of LNCaP prostate cancer cells, but normal HaCaT cells showed no cytotoxic effects. Furthermore, plant extract therapy increased caspase-3 activation and mRNA expression of apoptotic-related genes, suggesting that this could be a mechanism for cancer cell growth suppression. The significance of Prosopis juliflora as a source of new antioxidant compounds against prostate cancer was emphasized in the current study. However, more study is needed to demonstrate the efficacy of Prosopis juliflora leaves extract in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Burn wound is one of the major medical and Hydrogels are one of the best wound dressings for burns. Herein, chitosan/Aloe vera hydrogel was prepared and cross-linked by genipin. The nano-liposomes of soy lecithin as a phospholipid containing calendula were added to the hydrogel. The surface morphology and functional groups were evaluated by SEM and FTIR methods, respectively. The average hydrodynamic diameter was calculated by the dynamic light scattering. Also, the nanoliposomes hydrogel containing calendula has a suitable swelling and vapor permeability. The encapsulation rate of calendula was 83 % which indicates a high load of calendula. In vivo release study of hydrogel containing calendula was achieved by the French diffusion cell. Finally, the cytotoxicity (MTT) test, the proliferation and viability of fibroblast cells (L929) were investigated and the results show no cytotoxicity of the hydrogel. for in vitro study, the passage of calendula-containing liposomes through the skin was investigated. Rat abdominal skin was used as a natural membrane. France diffusion cell was used as a two-compartment model to measure the amount of passage. The skin absorption of the calendula begins with a gentle slope and in 24 h approximately 90% of skin absorption has taken place.

Drought stress is one of the most important limiting factors in crop yield through impact on the cellular and physiological functions of the plant. Therefore, the study of physiological responses of plants can help to better understanding the drought tolerance mechanisms. In this experiment, 125 wild diploid wheat genotypes of Aegilops tauschii were evaluated for the physiological responses under rainfed and supplemental irrigation conditions. The physiological characteristics such as leaf relative water content (RWC), excised leaf water retention (ELWR), relative water loss (RWL), chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, ion leakage, membrane stability index (MSI) and proline content were measured. The results showed that the higher proline content, lower chlorophyll degradation rate and low amount of the membrane stability index (MSI) may inhibit the grain yield reduction under rainfed conditions. It was also found that the lower ion leakage due to the low cell membrane damage may led to the higher yield under rain-fed conditions. The results of regression analysis in both rainfed and supplemental irrigation conditions showed that proline content and total chlorophyll were introduced into the model, and explained the most variation in the grain yield. So, considering the above traits, the genotypes 16, 22, 43, 66 and 106 seems to be more drought tolerant and could be exploited in wheat breeding programs after further assessments.

Hypericum lydium Boiss. is a perennial plant of the Hypericaceae family, which has been used in particular to treat depression. The aim of this study was to determine in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial activities, anticholinesterase (acetylcholinesterase (AChE)/butyrylcholinesterase (BChE)), antidiabetic activities (α-glucosidase/α-amylase) and Tyrosinase inhibitor activity of methanol and water extracts of H. lydium. Also, gene expression has been evaluated in the shoot and root by microarray technology. So, in general, the purpose of this study is to study the active molecules such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, enzymes and genes in the plant, which is the first to be reported. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with three replications. In addition, gene expression was compared in the shoot and root parts. Expression profiling was carried out by microarrays. According to the results, the highest chemical components were determined in methanol extract rather than water extract. There was a difference between the obtained components. While the highest antioxidant activity was determined from the methanol extract of plant herbs for DPPH Free Radical Scavenging Activity, antioxidant activity was the same in both methanol and water extracts using the ABTS method. The methanol extract demonstrated stronger anticholinesterase (AChE and BChE) and α-amylase inhibition activity. This study was complemented by the detection of antioxidant activity and some enzyme inhibition activity in the methanol extract. Microarray showed 10,784 genes had significantly different expression in root and shoot. There was a positive effect of methanol extract in respect of different activities compared to the water extract. Gene expression showed that the number of expressed genes in the root was greater than the shoot.

Arctium lappa L. (Burdock) is an important plant with various pharmacological effects. According to the importance of this plant, optimization of its tissue culture will lead to more investigation and application of it. The aim of this study was to develop protocols for callus induction and shoot regeneration of A.  lappa. In order to optimize of tissue culture in A. lappa, callus induction, indirect regeneration and direct regeneration were carried out in factorial experiment based on Completely Randomized Designs (CRDs). Hypocotyl and cotyledon were cultured on the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) for callus induction. In indirect regeneration experiment various levels of BAP and α-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and two types of explants (calli derived from cotyledon and hypocotyl) were investigated. In direct regeneration section, various levels of BAP plus 2 mg/l NAA and different explants (cotyledon, hypocotyl and bud) were compared. In both cotyledon and hypocotyl, the maximum callus induction was observed on a media containing 2 mg/l 2,4-D plus 1 mg/l BAP (100% and 76.19% respectively). The highest percentage of indirect regeneration (65%) was observed at 1 mg/l BAP plus 0.5 mg/l NAA on calli from hypocotyl. The highest percentage of direct regeneration (90.33) was observed in hypocotyl with a lateral bud explant on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l BAP plus 2 mg/l NAA. In this study, optimization of tissue culture protocol for A. lappa was carried out as a research technique, as well as technique for further exploitation of this plant.

The fenugreek is one of the most important medicinal plants belongs to Fabaceae, originated in West Asia, Iran and Mediterranean regions. This research included a qualitative study of fenugreek proteins using SDS-PAGE electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel and the separation of protein bands of fenugreek leaves in different treatments of vermicompost fertilizer and cultivating dates. Results showed that a band (about 80 kDa) on the first planting date (May 31) is observed in all samples except for sample a1 (10 t/ha vermicompost on May 31). Another significant difference was the band contained in the third planting date (31 September) and in the molecular weight of about 15 kDa, which was not seen in other dates. This difference can be due to the synthesis of this protein with the mentioned weight under the conditions of reducing the temperature in the early fall. It also showed more differences in two-dimensional electrophoresis, for example, in 14 kDa and PI in the range of 4.5-4.7 in treatment without fertilizer, no protein expression was observed, which was consistent with the results of the SDS-PAGE test.

Due to the importance of Camelina for low expectation (water and other inputs) and as an oil crop, Soheil cultivar was cultivated in Ardebil, Hamedan, Rasht, Ilam, Kermanshah, Karaj, Mashhad, Ahvaz and Bushehr Provinces. Fatty acids were measured with MG-Mass. Results showed that morphological traits were not very dependent on the climate, but the profile of the fatty acids was dependent. ANOVA of the effects of climate on the saturated fatty acid showed that there were significant differences between climates for all studied SFAs (P<0.01) with the exception of Lauric acid. Mean squares of the effects of climate on the Unsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) in showing that there were significant differences between climates for all studied MUFAs (P<0.01). Mean squares of the effects of climate on the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), oil percentage and protein content of seeds indicated that there were significant differences between climates for all these studied traits. The statistical analysis for the effects of Climate on the ratio of the Saturated Fatty Acid (SFA) in Camelina sativa showed that there were significant differences (P<0.01) for SFA, MUSFA, PUFA, MP, P:S and MP:S. Briefly, in the cold climates, the percentage of unsaturated fatty acids was higher. So it is possible to the cultivation of this plant in cold provinces for nutritional purposes and in tropical provinces for industrial and sanitary purposes.

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni has been used locally as a non-calorie sweetener in medicine and diabetic diet which claimed to have aphrodisiac properties, although no scientific data of this function have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of S. rebaudiana extract on sexual dysfunction, testosterone levels and number of Leydig cells in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic male rats. A total of 28 diabetic male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: diabetic group without any extract and 3 extract groups (5, 50 and 100 mg/kg). Seven normal control rats were treated with vehicle mount latency and frequency of (ML, MF), intromission latency and frequency (IL, IF), ejaculation latency and frequency of (EL, EF), the mount latency post ejaculation (MPE), the intromission latency post ejaculation (ILE), the intromission frequency post ejaculation (IFE) were recorded during 30 min on days 0, 14, 28. The serum testosterone levels, blood glucose, sex organs weight, number of leydig cells and histology of testicular tissue were measured. The stevia group (5 mg/kg) had a significant (p<0.05) increase in EF and IF. The number of Leydig cells in the diabetic group were significantly (p<0.05) reduced compared to the normal group and diabetic groups with extract (5 and 50 mg/kg). The serum testosterone levels and other sexual behaviors did not show any significant differences. The low- dose stevia extract with attention to antioxidant, vasodilator and anti-diabetic properties can be aphrodisiac in STZ- induced diabetic male rats.

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is one of two species that contains steviol glycosides. Among steviol glycosides that extracted from leaves, stevioside and rebaudioside A are the two major and the sweetest glycosides that are about 200-300 times sweeter than sucrose with zero calories. The best method for stevia propagation is tissue culture. So, for investigation of nutrients in medium, we studied the effect of different concentrations of MS media (MS, 0.5 MS, 0.25 MS, 0 MS) on morphological traits, UGT74G1 and UGT76G1 genes expression and accumulation of steviol glycosides in stevia leaves. The best growth rate (0.472 mm/d) has occurred in plants grown in MS media. Also, the highest gene expression of UGT74G1 gene (1.000 Total lab unit) was seen under MS treatment. However, the highest expression level of UGT76G1 gene (1.701 Total lab unit) was observed at plants grown in 0 MS. The highest amount of both Stevioside and Rebaudioside A (14.23 and 8.12, respectively) were accumulated in plants under MS treatment. Obviously, dilution of MS media associated with decreasing in both expression of the intended genes and accumulation of steviol glycosides.

Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) from Asteraceae family is a useful medicinal plant that prevents and cures diabetes, blood pressure, weight gain and tooth decay. Due to self-incompatibility in stevia, somatic embryo investigation for artificial seed production is valuable in this plant. In order to evaluate the callus induction characteristics in stevia, a factorial experiment was laid out based on a completely randomized design with three replications. The factors included ten hormone combinations and control, two kinds of media (MS and B5) and two types of explants (leaf and internode). Callus induction characters including the percentage of callus formation, days to callus induction, fresh and dry callus weight were recorded. Analysis of variance showed significant differences (p<0.01) among hormone combinations, media and explant types as well as their interactions. The best treatment for callus induction with minimum time to callus formation was 1 mg/l NAA+1 mg/l BAP. The highest fresh and dry callus weight were obtained on B5 medium supplemented by 1 mg/l 2,4-D+1 mg/l BAP (in leaf explant) and 0.25 mg/l 2,4-D+ 0.1 mg/l BAP (in internode explant). These results can be used in suspension culture. To induce somatic embryogenesis in suspension culture, six hormone treatments were investigated. The highest somatic embryogenesis percentage was obtained in MS medium supplemented by 2 mg/l 2,4-D+ 0.5 mg/l NAA+0.5 mg/l BAP.

CONTEXT: Aloe vera Linn. (Liliaceae) is a medicinal plant and has a number of curative properties. Vegetative propagation has not enough potential for supplying market demand. However, via in vitro propagation makes possible the mass production of Aloe plants. OBJECTIVE: The current study was conducted to investigate growth regulators' effects on proliferation of A. vera. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, for comparison of plant growth regulators' effects on proliferation, the shoot tips and auxiliary buds of A. vera were cultured in the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. Rooted plantlets were transferred to garden soil, compost, and sand in the proportion of 1:1:1, respectively, after hardening. RESULTS: The maximum number of shoots was obtained on the medium supplemented with 1 mg/L IAA+4 mg/L BAP and 0.2 mg/L IAA+0.8 BAP mg/L. Rooting was also achieved in the same media composition proliferation of shoot. The acclimatized plants showed 100% of survival. The regenerated plants looked healthy, and they were morphologically similar to that of stock plants. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that in vitro culture may be used as a technique for rapid propagation of A. vera.
