RESUMO

Soil salinity affects the plant growth and productivity detrimentally, but Solanum chilense, a wild relative of cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), is known to have exceptional salt tolerance. It has precise adaptations against direct exposure to salt stress conditions. Hence, a better understanding of the mechanism to salinity stress tolerance by S. chilense can be accomplished by comprehensive gene expression studies. In this study 1-month-old seedlings of S. chilense and S. lycopersicum were subjected to salinity stress through application of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Through RNA-sequencing here we have studied the differences in the gene expression patterns. A total of 386 million clean reads were obtained through RNAseq analysis using the Illumina HiSeq 2000 platform. Clean reads were further assembled de novo into a transcriptome dataset comprising of 514,747 unigenes with N50 length of 578 bp and were further aligned to the public databases. Genebank non-redundant (Nr), Viridiplantae, Gene Ontology (GO), KOG, and KEGG databases classification suggested enrichment of these unigenes in 30 GO categories, 26 KOG, and 127 pathways, respectively. Out of 265,158 genes that were differentially expressed in response to salt treatment, 134,566 and 130,592 genes were significantly up and down-regulated, respectively. Upon placing all the differentially expressed genes (DEG) in known signaling pathways, it was evident that most of the DEGs involved in cytokinin, ethylene, auxin, abscisic acid, gibberellin, and Ca2+ mediated signaling pathways were up-regulated. Furthermore, GO enrichment analysis was performed using REVIGO and up-regulation of multiple genes involved in various biological processes in chilense under salinity were identified. Through pathway analysis of DEGs, "Wnt signaling pathway" was identified as a novel pathway for the response to the salinity stress. Moreover, key genes for salinity tolerance, such as genes encoding proline and arginine metabolism, ROS scavenging system, transporters, osmotic regulation, defense and stress response, homeostasis and transcription factors were not only salt-induced but also showed higher expression in S. chilense as compared to S. lycopersicum. Thus indicating that these genes may have an important role in salinity tolerance in S. chilense. Overall, the results of this study improve our understanding on possible molecular mechanisms underlying salt tolerance in plants in general and tomato in particular.

RESUMO

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy in children and one of the very few life-threatening ophthalmic conditions. Genetically, the disease may be heritable or non-heritable. It can have unilateral or bilateral involvement and can present either sporadically or with a positive family history. Leukocoria and strabismus are the most common presentations. Diagnosis is made by indirect ophthalmoscopy aided by imaging techniques. Multidisciplinary management is aimed at saving lives, salvaging the globe and maintaining good vision. The use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and focal treatments, such as cryotherapy, laser photocoagulation, transpupillary thermotherapy, brachytherapy and periocular chemotherapy, form the mainstay of globe preserving treatment in retinoblastoma. In developing countries, retinoblastoma is unfortunately accompanied by a high mortality rate due to delayed diagnosis made at advanced stages of the disease. Early diagnosis and timely management are vital for a good prognosis.

RESUMO

Ayurvedic medicinal preparations, commonly known as bhasmas, were analysed for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). All the preparations contained PAH. The level of total PAH varied widely (2.32-9.55 ppm) among the preparations tested. Similarly, the benzo(a)pyrene level also varied the highest concentration being 9.7 ppm.

RESUMO

Growth, nutrient retention, and metabolic response of low-birth-weight infants fed human milk provided by their mother; this milk supplemented with bovine milk protein, calcium, phosphorus, and sodium; or pasteurized term human milk with the same supplement were monitored from the time desired intake was tolerated until weight reached 2200 g. The supplement resulted in greater rates of weight gain (20.5 +/- 2.3 vs 16.4 +/- 2.2 g.kg-1.d-1) and nitrogen retention (353 +/- 76 vs 270 +/- 53 mg.kg-1.d-1), increase in plasma transthyretin (TTR) concentration (7 +/- 16 vs -3 +/- 9 mg.L-1.wk-1), a higher mean plasma albumin concentration (34 +/- 3 vs 32 +/- 4 g/L), and a higher plasma TTR concentration at discharge (100 +/- 22 vs 75 +/- 24 mg/L). All these variables correlated significantly with total nitrogen intake, suggesting that the differences are attributable to the protein content of the supplement. The supplement also resulted in greater rates of calcium and phosphorus accretion but the plasma alkaline phosphatase activity of the supplemented vs the unsupplemented groups did not differ.

RESUMO

This paper describes the construction and evaluation of two new inductive applicators for electromagnetic hyperthermia. The cross-section of the applicators can be designed to suit the area to be heated. A tuning device which can match different applicators to a source is also described.

RESUMO

Gradual alterations of testicular tissues were noted in rats treated with mercuric chloride at dosages of 0.05 mg/kg and 0.10 mg/kg body weight (i.p.) over a period of 90 days. Significant reduction in body and testicular weights were observed throughout the experimental period in treated animals. Consequently, testicular protein, DNA and RNA also exhibited a similar type of diminution in the same groups. Moreover, high cholesterol and low ascorbic acid concentrations were found in testis at both doses. Testicular degeneration and spermatogenic arrest were more pronounced in the high dose group over a period of 90 days.
