RESUMO

1. Bacteriophages (BP) have gained increasing attention as a treatment of bacterial infection for animals. However, the data pertaining to dietary application of BP for laying hens have been limited. 2. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary BP on laying performance, egg quality and caecal bacterial populations in laying hens. 3. The dietary BP used in this experiment was a mixture of individual BP targeting Salmonella gallinarum, Salmonella pullorum, Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella derby and Staphylococcus aureus. 4. A total of 360 Hy-Line Brown laying hens of 32 weeks of age were allotted to one of three dietary treatments with 6 replicates in a completely randomised design. The basal diet was prepared, and 0.4 or 0.8 g/kg BP mixture was supplemented to the basal diet. Diets were fed to hens for 8 weeks. 5. Laying performance and egg quality were not affected by dietary treatments. As inclusion levels of BP mixture in diets were increased, the DNA copy numbers for Salmonella spp. in the caecal contents decreased linearly, whereas the DNA copy numbers for Escherichia coli in the caecal contents increased linearly. 6. Results indicate that dietary supplementation of BP mixture decreases the target Salmonella spp. populations but increases Escherichia coli populations in the gastrointestinal tract of laying hens with little impact on laying performance and egg quality.

RESUMO

Twelve healthy two-month-old Landrace x Yorkshire pigs of both sexes were randomly assigned to receive either tiletamine and xylazine (zx) or zolazepam and xylazine followed 20 minutes later by yohimbine (zxy). The pigs' scores for immobilisation and analgesia, and their rectal temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, pO(2), pCO(2), alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose and total plasma proteins were determined before and five, 25, 45, 65 and 85 minutes after the administration of the tiletamine/zolazepam and xylazine. The mean total scores for immobilisation and analgesia of the zxy pigs were significantly lower than those of the zx pigs after 85 minutes. The mean rectal temperatures of the zxy pigs were significantly lower than those of zx pigs after 25, 45 and 65 minutes. The mean respiratory rates of the zx pigs were significantly lower than those of zxy pigs after five minutes. The mean pCO(2) of the zxy pigs were significantly lower than those of zx pigs five minutes after the administration of yohimbine. The mean glucose concentration of the zxy pigs were significantly lower than those of zx pigs after 65 and 85 minutes. The mean concentration total protein of the zxy pigs were significantly lower than those of zx pigs throughout the period of anaesthesia. Both groups became laterally recumbent within three minutes. When recovering from anaesthesia, the pigs treated with yohimbine took significantly less time to achieve sternal recumbency (mean [sd] 52.2 [8.9] v 76.2 [20.6] minutes) and less time to be able to stand (mean [sd] 77.0 [9.8] v 98.7 [15.8] minutes), and walk (mean [sd] 81.3 [11.3] v 110.8 [18.6] minutes).

RESUMO

Holmes' (rubral or midbrain) tremor is an unusual combination of 2 Hz to 5 Hz rest, postural, and kinetic tremors of an upper extremity. This tremor has been considered to result from the lesions in the vicinity of the red nucleus in the midbrain. There has been no systematic analysis of the surgical target in the Holmes' tremor so far of nucleus ventrointermedius (Vim) or globus pallidus interna. This 26 year old man gradually developed a disabling midbrain tremor involving both the distal and proximal parts of the left upper arm. Additional neurological findings included oculomotor palsy and ataxia of the left arm. On the radiological studies, a mass lesion (germinoma) was found on the midbrain tegmentum, which was treated by conventional radiation therapy. Although there was improvement in the radiological imaging, his midbrain tremor became intolerable despite medical treatment. The authors performed MR guided stereotactic Vim thalamotomy. With radiofrequency lesioning in the right Vim, his resting, postural, and action tremors were much alleviated in both the distal and proximal parts of the left upper extremity. The authors consider that Vim thalamotomy is still an effective means of controlling midbrain tremors involving the proximal upper limb.

RESUMO

Intussusception is a common but life threatening gastrointestinal emergency that occurs in the infant or young child. A three-year-old boy presenting with abdominal pain and vomiting was diagnosed to have the target sign on ultrasonography. An ileocolic intussusception was initially reduced using air enema. Recurrent intussusception 12 hours later was reduced by barium enema. In the proper hands, ultrasonography has a high diagnostic accuracy rate for intussusception. For treatment, air enema is usually perferred to barium enema. Air enema is a safe, rapid, and clean procedure that has been shown to achieve a high reduction rate, comparable to that of barium enema. Ultrasonographically-guided hydrostatic reduction of intussusception has also been recently described and is an effective alternative.

RESUMO

A multijet and multistage aerosol concentrator was designed and fabricated with two virtual impactors in a series. Collection efficiency, internal loss, and concentration factors were calculated at ambient conditions for each stage. The total inlet flow rate of the aerosol concentrator was set at 1000 L/min(-1), while the minor flow rate for the first stage was at 6.0% of the total inlet flow and the minor flow rate of the second stage was at 6.7% of the first stage minor flow. The aerosol concentrator was calibrated using polystyrene latex particles in aerodynamic sizes ranging from 0.5 to 10 microm. Several configurations of the multijet acceleration nozzles and multitube receptors were designed in this study. The effects of the different designs were subsequently evaluated through experimentation. It was found that a properly designed multijet and multistage aerosol concentrator can significantly improve aerosol concentration performance. Results showed that the concentration factor increases from 1 to 240 over the particle size range studied. Applications of the multijet and multistage aerosol concentrator with high-volume flow rate can vary widely, from detection of biological aerosols at low concentration, laboratory aerosol sampling, clean room monitoring, and ambient aerosol measurements.

RESUMO

The compatibility of remifentanil hydrochloride with 90 other drugs during simulated Y-site administration was studied. Five milliliters of remifentanil 25 and 250 micrograms/mL (as hydrochloride) in 0.9% sodium chloride injection or 5% dextrose injection was combined with 5 mL of each of 90 other drugs in 5% dextrose injection of 0.9% sodium chloride injection. Each combination was prepared in duplicate. The combinations were stored at approximately 23 degrees C under fluorescent light and examined with the unaided eye and in high-intensity monodirectional light during the first 15 minutes after preparation and at one and four hours. The turbidity of each combination was measured as well. Particle sizing and counting were performed for selected combinations. Most of the combinations exhibited no haze, turbidity, or color change throughout the study period. Remifentanil 25 micrograms/mL combined with chlorpromazine hydrochloride showed a small increase in haze within four hours. One of the combinations of remifentanil 250 micrograms/mL with cefoperazone sodium was unacceptably hazy within one hour. The combination of remifentanil 250 micrograms/mL with amphotericin B formed a gross precipitate upon mixing. Remifentanil 25 and 250 microgram/mL (as hydrochloride) in 0.9% sodium chloride injection was compatible for four hours at approximately 23 degrees C with all the drugs studied except chlorpromazine hydrochloride (with remifentanil 25 micrograms/mL), cefoperazone sodium (with remifentanil 250 micrograms/mL), and amphotericin B (with remifentanil 250 micrograms/mL in 5% dextrose injection).
