RESUMO

Endometriosis is common in women of childbearing age, while severe intestinal endometriosis requiring bowel resection is relatively rare. Intestinal endometriosis has recently been managed laparoscopically. We report the case of a 38-year-old patient with rectosigmoid and ileal endometriosis who was successfully treated by laparoscopic bowel resections. The patient had first presented at age 34 years with a chief complaint of rectal bleeding and lower abdominal pain related to the menstrual cycle. She underwent laparoscopic surgery and was diagnosed with severe endometriosis involving the rectosigmoid colon. Although an additional laparoscopic surgery had been planned, she did not return to the hospital. When she was 38 years old, she presented again with the same symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a low intensity mass between the uterus and the rectosigmoid colon. A barium enema showed a stenotic site in the rectosigmoid colon. After hormone therapy, she underwent laparoscopic surgery. The anterior wall of the rectosigmoid colon adhered firmly to the corpus of the uterus, and another stenotic site was identified at the terminal ileum. The rectosigmoid colon and ileum were partially resected under laparoscopy. The postoperative course was uneventful and she was freed of symptoms. Laparoscopic treatment for patients with severe endometriosis of the bowel has becomes feasible and safe.

OBJECTIVE: The relationships between element concentrations and sperm parameters in semen samples were investigated. METHODS: Semen samples (n = 113) were donated voluntarily by male partners of infertile couples. The concentrations of fourteen elements (Na, K, P, Ca, Zn, Mg, Fe, Cu, Se, Mn, Sn, Co, Ni, and Cd) in semen were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, fluorometry, or colorimetry. Element concentrations in seminal plasma and in sperm were also measured. RESULTS: Element concentrations in semen were in the order Na > P, K > Ca > Zn > Mg > > Fe> Cu, Se > Mn > Sn, Ni, Co, Cd. When the samples were divided into two groups in terms of sperm concentration and number, the Se concentration in semen with normal parameter values (sperm concentration > or = 20 x 10(6) and sperm number > or = 40 x 10(6)), 99.4 +/- 37.4 ng/ml, was higher than that in semen with abnormal parameter values (sperm concentration < or = 20 x 10(6) and/or sperm number < or = 40 x 10(6)), 72.1 +/- 33.9 ng/ml (p < 0.001). A clearer positive correlation between the Se concentration and the sperm concentration was observed in the sperm portion (r = 0.853, p < 0.001) than in semen (r = 0.512, p < 0.001) and seminal plasma (r = 0.292, p = 0.003). Statistically significant correlations were also observed between the concentration of Se, P, Zn, Cu, Fe, or Mn in semen, the sperm portion or seminal plasma and the sperm concentration, semen volume or abnormal morphology, although correlation coefficients were small. CONCLUSION: Among biologically essential elements in semen of infertile males, Se was a good indicator of sperm concentration; however, other trace elements did not indicate clear relationships between their concentrations and sperm parameters.

RESUMO

Our aim is to determine the relationship between heart rate and behavioral states of a fetal goat using power spectral analysis. Electrocardiograms, electrocortical activity, and fetal breathing movements are recorded from 7 goat fetuses during extrauterine incubation. The heart rate power spectrum is classified into very low, low, and high frequency bands, and behavioral states are classified into low-voltage electrocortical activity with fetal breathing movements (LVB), low-voltage electrocortical activity without fetal breathing movements (LVN), and high-voltage electrocortical activity (HVN). There is a significant difference in total power spectral density in the high frequency band between LVN and HVN, and LVN and LVB. The relationship between each fetal behavioral state is assessed by power spectral analysis.
