RESUMO

Prior to the advent of the next-generation heater for wearable/on-body electronic devices, various properties are required, including conductivity, transparency, mechanical reliability, and conformability. Expansion to two-dimensional (2D) structure of metallic nanowires based on network- and mesh-type geometries has been widely exploited for realizing these heaters. However, the routes led to many drawbacks such as the low-density cross-bar linking, self-aggregation of wire, and high junction resistance. Although 2D carbon nanomaterials such as graphene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have shown their potentials for the purpose, CVD-grown graphene with sufficiently high conductivity was limited due to its poor processability for large-area applications, while rGO fabricated with a complex reduction process involving the use of toxic chemicals suffered from a low electrical conductivity. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and robust process, utilizing electrostatic assembling of negatively charged MXene flakes on a positively treated surface of substrate, for fabricating a metal-like 2D MXene thin film heater (TFH). Our TFH showed a high optical property (>65%), low sheet resistance (215 Ω/sq), fast electrothermal response (within dozens of seconds) with an intrinsically high electrical conductivity, and mechanical flexibility (up to 180° bending). Its capability for forming a firm and stable ionic-type interface with a counterpart surface allows us to develop a shape-adaptable and patchable thread heater (TH) that can be shaped on diverse substrates even under harsh conditions of conventional sewing or weaving processes. This work suggests that our shape-adaptable MXene heaters are potentially suitable not only for wearable devices for local heating and defrosting but also for a variety of emerging applications of soft actuators and wearable/flexible healthcare monitoring and thermotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) occurs in up to 63-84% of patients after thyroid surgery. This study aims to assess the effects of using a capsicum plaster to reduce PONV after thyroid surgery at either the Chinese acupuncture point (acupoint) Pericardium 6 (P6) or Korean hand acupuncture point K-D2. METHODS: One-hundred eighty-four patients who underwent thyroid surgery were randomized in four groups (n = 46 each): control group = inactive tape at P6 acupoints and on both shoulders as a nonacupoint; P6 group = capsicum plaster at P6 points and inactive tape on both shoulders; K-D2 group = capsicum plaster at K-D2 acupoints and inactive tape on both shoulders; Sham group = capsicum plaster on both shoulders and inactive tape at P6 acupoints. The capsicum plaster was applied before the induction of anesthesia and removed at 8 hr after surgery. RESULTS: The incidence and severity of nausea and vomiting and the need for rescue antiemetics were decreased in the patients in the P6 and K-D2 groups compared to the patients in the control and sham groups (P < 0.001). The patients in the P6 and K-D2 groups also reported that they were more satisfied (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the capsicum plaster at the P6 and K-D2 acupoint was a promising antiemetic method for the patients undergoing thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Metastases usually occur in regional lymph nodes or to lungs. Distant metastases to skeletal muscle are rare. Here, we report a patient with a solitary metastasis to skeletal muscle. PATIENT FINDINGS: A 31-year-old woman was found on routine physical examination to have a 1-cm nodule in the right thyroid lobe. The patient underwent endoscopic total thyroidectomy with central cervical lymph node dissection in April 2008. Pathological analysis showed a 1.5 × 0.9 cm PTC in the right thyroid lobe with extension into perithyroidal soft tissue and lymph node involvement (all six central lymph nodes examined were positive). After surgery, she received 100 mCi of radioactive iodine. Subsequently, the patient was found to have a lateral neck recurrence and, therefore, underwent right unilateral modified radical neck dissection followed by additional radioactive iodine ablation. In February 2010, her serum thyroglobulin was 19.4 ng/mL, but the neck ultrasound was negative. However, a fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography scan showed focal FDG uptake in the vastus medialis muscle of the right distal femur. A 0.9 × 0.5 cm, well-defined, whitish mass in the vastus medialis muscle was confirmed on histopathology to be metastatic PTC. SUMMARY: Here, we report an adult woman who presented with a thyroid nodule that was noted to be PTC on histopathology after total thyroidectomy. Almost 2 years later, she was noted to have had focal FDG uptake consistent in the region of the right femur. A solitary metastasis of PTC in the right vastus medialis muscle was resected. A MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) search showed that this is only the third report of PTC with a distant, solitary skeletal muscle metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: Distant skeletal metastasis in PTC is very rare. Until the availability of FDG to detect skeletal metastasis of PTC, they may have been more difficult to discern.

Neuronal soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein (SNAP) receptor (SNARE) proteins mediate membrane fusion between synaptic vesicle and presynaptic membrane, resulting in neurotransmitter release. SNARE proteins are specific substrates of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) which are now widely used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. While BoNT blocks neuroexocytosis by cleaving SNAREs, inhibiting SNARE assembly process might exert the same effect on neurotransmission. In the present study, some extracts of 100 plants reduced neurotransmitter release by inhibiting SNARE complex formation in neuronal cells. The extracts effectively paralyzed muscle of rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparation. Our results raise the possibility that SNARE folding inhibitors from natural resources might replace some special BoNT application fields.

Bone undergoes continuous remodeling through bone formation and resorption, and maintaining the balance for skeletal rigidity. Bone resorption and loss are generally attributed to osteoclasts. Differentiation of osteoclasts is regulated by receptor activator of nuclear factor NF-kB ligand (RANKL), a member of tumor necrosis factor family. When the balance is disturbed, pathological bone abnormality ensues. Through the screening of traditional Korean medicinal plants, the effective molecules for inhibition and stimulation of RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation in mouse bone marrow macrophages were identified. Among 222 methanol extracts, of medicinal plants, 10 samples exhibited ability to induce osteoclast differentiation. These include Dryobalanops aromatica, Euphoria longana, Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Prunus mume, Prunus nakaii, and Polygonatum odoratum. In contrast, Ailanthus altissima, Curcuma longa, Solanum nigrum, Taraxacum platycarpa, Trichosanthes kirilowii, and Daphne genkwa showed inhibitory effects in RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation.

UNLABELLED: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are still common and distressing problems after general anesthesia, especially in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. We studied a nonpharmacological therapy of PONV-capsicum plaster (PAS)-at either the Korean hand acupuncture point K-D2 or the Chinese acupuncture point Pericardium 6 (P6) of both hands. One-hundred-sixty healthy patients were included in a randomized, double-blinded study: 60 patients were in the control group, 50 patients were in the K-D2 group, and 50 patients were in the P6 group. PAS was applied at the K-D2 point in the K-D2 group and at the P6 point in the P6 group, whereas in the control group, an inactive tape was fixed at the K-D2 point of both hands. The PAS was applied before the induction of anesthesia and removed at 8 h after surgery. The incidence of PONV and the need for rescue medication were evaluated at predetermined time intervals. In the treatment group, the incidence of vomiting was significantly less (22% for the K-D2 group and 26% for the P6 group) than in the control group (56.7%) at 24 h after surgery (P < 0.001). The need for rescue antiemetics was significantly less in the treatment groups compared with the control group (P < 0.001). We conclude that PAS at the Korean hand acupuncture point K-D2 was an effective method for reducing PONV, as was PAS at the P6 acupoint, after abdominal hysterectomy. IMPLICATIONS: Capsicum plaster at either the Korean hand acupuncture point K-D2 or the Pericardium 6 acupoint reduces postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy.
