RESUMO

Str. pneumoniae isolates were susceptible to penicillin, all to also ofloxacin and chloramphenicol and cefotaxim and 39 (100%) to cotrimoxazol. Concerning S. aureus, all isolates 22 were susceptible to oxacillin and chloramphenicol, and 21 also to cotrimoxazol. All N. meningitidis isolates but one-10 of all were susceptible to penicillin, all to cefotaxim, chloramphenicol and cotrimoxazol. All H.influenzae isolates were susceptible to ampicillin and chloramphenicol, as well as to ofloxacin and cotrimoxazol. Those surprisingly high susceptibilities to rather "old" antibiotics may be explained by low antibiotic consumption, accessibility and therefore low usage which is a key promoter of resistance both in community and hospital.

RESUMO

Intraepithelial bacteria were isolated by the gentamicin protection assay (GPA) from biopsy samples obtained at colonoscopy (colon cancer, n = 10 patients; colonic adenoma, n = 20; control group, n = 20; cancer patients without gastrointestinal tract GIT malignancy, n = 10). After a three-month administration of E. faecium M-74 to patients with positive GPA biopsies, 172 biopsy specimens from 60 patients were examined with the GPA. The number of biopsies with intracellular bacteria was significantly higher in adenoma and carcinoma group than in control group (26 vs. 10%; p = 0.004); in cancer patients without GIT malignancy the difference was nonsignificant. E. faecium M-74 was also administered to 5 patients with colonic adenoma; according to a control colonoscopy the number of biopsies with intracellular bacteria was significantly lower after probiotic administration (48 vs. 16%; p = 0.03). A striking prevalence of intraepithelial bacteria was also showed in patients with large bowel adenoma and carcinoma. The administration of probiotic strain M-74 can thus be considered to be an effective and promising method for elimination of pathogenic bacteria in the case of inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer.

RESUMO

The aim of the work was to determine the short-term effect (19 days) of dietary As additions (30 microg As/g in the form As2O3) on the Se and I concentrations in eggs and tissues of 49-week-old Rhode Island Red laying hens. Se and I concentrations were determined in eggs collected from the 8th to the 10th and from the 17th to the 19th days of the experiment. After 19 days, blood was collected by anterior heart puncture, and after slaughter the liver, kidney, lung, muscle (musculus pectoralis superficialis) and feathers were collected. Se and I concentrations were determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis and the results expressed on a dry matter basis. In the control and the exposed group, the highest Se concentrations were found in kidney, followed by liver, blood, lung, muscle, and feathers. In the control group the highest I concentration was found in feathers, followed by kidney, blood, lungs, liver, and muscle. In the trial group, the order was almost the same, except that blood concentration was lower than in liver. As2O3 added to the feed significantly increased the Se concentration in the lung (p = 0.0216), I concentration in muscle (p = 0.0112) and significantly decreased I concentration in blood (p = 0.0371). It had no effect on the concentrations of Se and I in egg yolk and white.
