Three-dimensional liver bioprinting is an emerging technology in the field of regenerative medicine that aids in the creation of functional tissue constructs that can be used as transplantable organ substitutes. During transplantation, the bioprinted donor liver must be protected from the oxidative stress environment created by various factors during the transplantation procedure, as well as from drug-induced damage from medications taken as part of the post-surgery medication regimen following the procedure. In this study, Silymarin, a flavonoid with the hepatoprotective properties were introduced into the GelMA bioink formulation to protect the bioprinted liver against hepatotoxicity. The concentration of silymarin to be added in GelMA was optimised, bioink properties were evaluated, and HepG2 cells were used to bioprint liver tissue. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was used to induce hepatotoxicity in bioprinted liver, and the effect of this chemical on the metabolic activities of HepG2 cells was studied. The results showed that Silymarin helps with albumin synthesis and shields liver tissue from the damaging effects of CCl4. According to gene expression analysis, CCl4 treatment increased TNF-α and the antioxidant enzyme SOD expression in HepG2 cells while the presence of silymarin protected the bioprinted construct from CCl4-induced damage. Thus, the outcomes demonstrate that the addition of silymarin in GelMA formulation protects liver function in toxic environments.

Women face a significant change in their reproductive health as menopause sets in. It is marred with numerous physiological changes that negatively impact their quality of life. This universal, transition phase is associated with menopausal and postmenopausal syndrome, which may spread over 2-10 years. This creates a depletion of female hormones causing physical, mental, sexual and social problems and may, later on, manifest as postmenopausal osteoporosis leading to weak bones, causing fractures and ultimately morbidity and mortality. Menopausal hormone therapy generally encompasses the correction of hormone balance through various pharmacological agents, but the associated side effects often lead to cessation of therapy with poor clinical outcomes. However, it has been noticed that phytotherapeutics is trusted by women for the amelioration of symptoms related to menopause and for improving bone health. This could primarily be due to their reduced side effects and lesser costs. This review attempts to bring forth the suitability of phytotherapeutics/herbals for the management of menopausal, postmenopausal syndrome, and menopausal osteoporosis through several published research. It tries to enlist the available botanicals with their key constituents and mechanism of action for mitigating symptoms associated with menopause as well as osteoporosis. It also includes a list of a few herbal commercial products available for these complications. The article also intends to collate the findings of various clinical trials and patents available in this field and provide a window for newer research avenues in this highly important yet ignored health segment.

INTRODUCTION: The Desarda autologous tissue repair is comparable to the Lichtenstein hernioplasty for inguinal hernia regarding recurrence, chronic groin pain, and return to work activities. This study was designed to establish the outcomes of Desarda's repair versus Lichtenstein's hernioplasty concerning post-operative recovery to normal gait and its feasibility under local anesthesia (LA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a single-center, prospective, double-blinded, non-inferiority, randomized trial. Patients undergoing open hernia repair for primary inguinal hernia were included. Patients were randomly assigned and followed up for 2 years. The primary endpoint was the time to return to normal gait post-surgery with comfort (non-inferiority margin fixed as 0.5 days). The secondary outcomes studied were post-operative pain score, the time required to return to work (all previously performed activities), and surgical-site occurrences (SSO). RESULTS: One hundred ten eligible patients were randomly assigned [56 patients (50.9%) in the Desarda group and 54 patients (49.1%) in the Lichtenstein group]. All the procedures were safely performed under LA. The median (interquartile range) time for resuming gait post-surgery with comfort was 5 days in the Desarda vs 4 days in Lichtenstein's arm (P = 0.16), thereby failing to demonstrate non-inferiority of Desarda against Lichtenstein hernioplasty. However, there were no significant differences in days to return to work, SSO, chronic groin pain, and recurrence within two years of surgery. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study could not demonstrate the non-inferiority of the Desarda repair versus Lichtenstein hernioplasty regarding the time taken to return to normal gait. Comparing the days to return to work, pain score, SSO, and chronic groin pain, including recurrence rate, Desarda repair faired equally with Lichtenstein hernioplasty, thereby highlighting its feasibility and efficacy under LA. Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) has limited use as a fertilizer, while contribute effectively to the environmental contamination and health risks. Petroleum sludge poses a serious effect on the ecological environment and human health. The present work aimed to present a novel encapsulation process with POFA binder for treating petroleum sludge. Among 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, four compounds were selected for the optimization of encapsulation process due to their high risk as carcinogenic substrates. Percentage PS (10-50%) and curing days (7-28 days) factors were used in the optimization process. The leaching test of PAHs was assessed using a GC-MS. The best operating parameters to minimize PAHs leaching from solidified cubes with OPC and10% POFA were recorded with 10% PS and after 28 days, at which PAH leaching was 4.255 and 0.388 ppm with R2 is 0.90%. Sensitivity analysis of the actual and predicted results for both the control and the test (OPC and 10% POFA) revealed that the actual results of the 10% POFA experiments have a high consistency with the predicted data (R2 0.9881) while R2 in the cement experiments was 0.8009. These differences were explained based on the responses of PAH leaching toward percentage of PS and days of cure. In the OPC encapsulation process, the main role was belonged to PS% (94.22%), while with 10% POFA, PS% contributed by 32.36 and cure day contributed by 66.91%.

Withania somnifera is an important medicinal plant, however, its cultivation and quality are compromised through infestation by leaf spot disease caused by the fungus, Alternaria alternata. To find suitable strategies against this disease, studies on post-infectional changes are important. ROS are critical as they interact with other defence signalling pathways. We analyzed ROS-generating and scavenging systems in healthy and diseased leaf samples of W. somnifera and ROS-driven downstream defence pathways. We used DAB and NBT assays for ROS detection, spectrophotometry and in-gel assays for ROS scavenging enzymes, a thioglycolic acid (TGA) based assay, histochemical staining for lignin, and qRT-PCR for transcript-level expression. Leaf spot infection in W. somnifera increased NADPH oxidase activity and ROS accumulation in infected leaves, together with enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity. Leaf spot-infected leaves had increased lignin content and higher expression of lignin biosynthesis genes. In addition, transcript levels of defence-related genes, NPR1 and PR, were also upregulated. The present work provides insights into responses to leaf spot disease through defence-related signalling in W. somnifera. It demonstrates crosstalk between ROS and lignin biosynthesis. This work identified potential targets for developing strategies to confer disease resistance against A. alternata in W. somnifera.

Remediation of environmental oil pollution with the usage of fungal organisms has proven to be a successful cleanup bioremediation method for organic contaminants. To investigate the breakdown of oil pollutants in water environments, biosurfactant-producing fungi have been isolated from oil-polluted soil samples. 16s rRNA sequencing technique was performed to identify the fungal organism and phylogenetic tree has been constructed. A variety of biosurfactant screening tests have demonstrated the better biosurfactant producing ability of fungi. The emulsion's stability, which is essential for the biodegradation process, was indicated by the emulsification index of 68.48% and emulsification activity of 1.3. In the isolated biosurfactant, important functional groups such as amino groups, lipids, and sugars were found according to thin layer chromatography analysis with a maximum retention value of 0.85. A maximum oil degradation of around 64% was observed with immobilized beads within 12 days. The half-life, and degradation removal rate constant of 20.21 days and 0.03 day-1, respectively, have been determined by the degradation kinetic analysis. GCMS analysis confirmed the highly degraded hydrocarbons such as nonanoic acid and pyrrolidine. The immobilized fungi exhibit better oil biodegradability in aqueous solutions.

In the present study, surface-active compounds (SAC) were extracted from biosolids using an alkaline treatment process. They were tested for their remediation efficiency of crude oil-contaminated sediment soil and was compared with Triton x-100. The SAC exhibited a similar soil washing efficiency to that of the commercial Triton x-100, and under the optimized soil washing parameters, SAC exhibited a maximum of 91% total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal. Further, on analysing the toxicity of the soil residue after washing, it was observed that SAC from biosolids washed soil exhibited an average of 1.5-fold lesser toxicity compared to that of Triton x-100 on different test models-earthworm, a monocot, and dicot plants. The analysis of the key soil parameters revealed that the commercial surfactant reduced the soil organic matter and porosity by an average of 1.3-fold compared to SAC. Further, the ability of surfactants to induce toxicity was confirmed by the adsorption of the surfactants on the surface of the soil particles which was in the order of Triton x-100 > SAC. Thus, this study suggests that SAC can be applied as an effective bioremediation approach for contaminated soil for a greener and sustainable ecosystem.

Brackish lake systems and estuaries are unique aquatic systems that support diversified life forms and strongly influence a region's economy. Major chemical water quality parameters of India's second-largest brackish water lake, Pulicat were assessed. Physico-chemical parameters like pH, temperature, suspended solid concentrates, total dissolved solids, salinity, nitrogenous nutrients, phosphate, silicate, and chlorophyll a were analysed. The results obtained for different parameters were compared and interpreted with statistical software SPSS version 20 and images were plotted using the Arc GIS spatial analyst tool. During the summer months, the nitrogen to phosphorus ratio ranges from a minimum of 1.96 to a maximum of 16.64 (9.55 ± 4.01) while it ranges from a minimum of 7.98 to a maximum of 15.52 (12.47 ± 2) during the pre-monsoon. In the monsoon season, the nitrogen to phosphorus ratio of surface water suggests a range from a minimum of 8.64 to a maximum of 17.58 (13.87 ± 2.14). During the post-monsoon season, the nitrogen to phosphorus ratio ranges from 4.98 to 17.34 (11.77 ± 3.68). The average nitrogen to phosphorus ratios were 9.6, 12.5, 13.9 and 11.8 in summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon respectively. The nitrogen to phosphorus ratio was lower than the Redfield ratio for all the seasons. The average concentration of chlorophyll a was 14.9, 13.4, 12.8 and 11.8 in summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon respectively. As per the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, there was no significant correlation among nitrogen, phosphorus, and chlorophyll a. This suggests the influence of suspended solid concentrates, and nitrogen and phosphorus flux in the sediment-water interface might be interfering with the nutrient cycles and primary productivity.

The treatment of contaminants from lignocellulosic biorefinery effluent has recently been identified as a unique challenge. This study focuses on removing phenolic contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lignocellulosic biorefinery wastewater (BRW) applying a laccase-assisted approach. Cassava waste was used as a substrate to produce the maximum yield of laccase enzyme (3.9 U/g) from Pleurotus ostreatus. Among the different inducers supplemented, CuSO4 (0.5 mM) showed an eight-fold increase in enzyme production (30.8 U/g) after 240 h of incubation. The catalytic efficiency of laccase was observed as 128.7 ± 8.47 S-1mM-1 for syringaldazine oxidation at optimum pH 4.0 and 40 °C. Laccase activity was completely inhibited by lead (II) ion, mercury (II) ion, sodium dodecyl sulphate, sodium azide and 1,4 dithiothretiol and induced significantly by manganese (II) ion and rhamnolipid. After treating BRW with laccase, the concentrations of PAHs and phenolic contaminants of 1144 µg/L and 46160 µg/L were reduced to 96 µg/L and 16100 µg/L, respectively. The ability of laccase to effectively degrade PAHs in the presence of different phenolic compounds implies that phenolic contaminants may play a role in PAHs degradation. After 240 h, organic contaminants were removed from BRW in the following order: phenol >2,4-dinitrophenol > 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol > 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol > acenaphthene > fluorine > phenanthrene > fluoranthene > pyrene > anthracene > chrysene > naphthalene > benzo(a)anthracene > benzo(a)pyrene > benzo(b)fluoranthene > pentachlorophenol > indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene > benzo(j) fluoranthene > benzo[k]fluoranthène. The multiple contaminant remediation from the BRW by enzymatic method, clearly suggests that the laccase can be used as a bioremediation tool for the treatment of wastewater from various industries.

Heavy metals are dumped into the environment as a result of human activities, posing a serious threat to ecology and human health. Surface water, potable drinking water, potable groundwater, and majority of wastewater include their traces, due to which, their detection by nanoparticles has received a lot of attention in recent years. Although microorganisms are utilized for green nanoparticle production, plant materials have recently been explored because they are more environmentally friendly, easier to scale up, and require fewer specific growth conditions. The production and attributes of nanoparticles synthesized by plant mediation could be enhanced through design of experiments approach, extending their feasibility in the detection of heavy metals in polluted environmental samples. A concise review on green synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles utilizing plant phytochemicals, its mechanism of synthesis along with significance of design of experiments for enhancement, and their use as heavy metal contamination detectors is presented in the current study.

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of vitamin D (VitD) supplementation for depression have yielded inconsistent results. We conducted the first RCT of VitD supplementation with multipoint serum 25(OH)D assessments in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with concurrent severe VitD deficiency. METHODS: We randomized antidepressant-free depressed adults with mean baseline 25(OH)D of 11.5 ng/ml to VitD (60,000 IU every 5 days; n = 31) or placebo (n = 28) for 12 weeks. All patients also received escitalopram (10-20 mg/day). Patients were rated at baseline and at the end of weeks 4, 8, and 12. Serum 25(OH)D was estimated at baseline, week 8, and week 12. RESULTS: In an intent-to-treat analysis, mean Hamilton Depression Scale scores dropped from 25.7 to 5.7 and from 25.8 to 5.0 in VitD and placebo groups, respectively (primary outcome; P = 0.92). VitD and placebo groups did not differ on other objective and subjective ratings of depression, or on global ratings. Similar findings characterized completer analyses. No significant correlations were observed between 25(OH)D levels and depression ratings across the course of the study. Importantly, endpoint escitalopram doses were 4 mg/day higher in placebo than in VitD patients, and 4 mg/day higher in VitD deficient than in VitD sufficient patients. LIMITATIONS: A ceiling effect with escitalopram may have prevented the discovery of benefits with VitD supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: VitD supplementation does not improve antidepressant outcomes with flexibly dosed escitalopram. VitD deficient depressed patients may require higher antidepressant doses to experience benefits similar to those whose deficiency is corrected by VitD supplementation.

Rotenone (ROT) is a widely used natural pesticide, and its effect on growth and developmental toxicity remain unclear. In the present study, the effects of ROT exposure on the reproductive structure and function of the female Drosophila melanogaster and third instar larvae were investigated. ROT exposure on female Drosophila melanogaster resulted in developmental inhibition and ovarian abnormality, which were evident from the disruptive growth of border cells as well as morphological changes in the orientation of nurse cells during the 9th-10th stage of developing egg chamber of in the Drosophila ovary. Other abnormalities, such as, altered developmental gene expression (Osk, Grk, Nos, Bic-d), inhibition in the kinesin motor protein level (KIF-5B), increased caspases activities (Caspase 3, 8, & 9) and apoptosis were also observed. Subsequently, ROT treated larvae exhibited behavioral deficits and delay in developmental time. The above findings demonstrate that the exposure of ROT causes developmental toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster.

Green synthesis has emerged as a sustainable approach for the fabrication of nanomaterials in the last few decades. Leaf extracts have been considered low-cost and highly efficient reactants for the synthesis of nanoparticles. In this study, an aqueous extract of Cleistocalyx operculatus leaves was employed as a reductant to synthesize Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites. The morphology, structure, and interface interaction of the Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites were investigated by (i) X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystallinity, (ii) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the morphologies, (iii) energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to determine the elemental composition and distribution, and (iv) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to understand the optical properties. The results showed that Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with particle sizes of 20-40 nm homogeneously covered the surface of the TiO2 nanoparticles. The green-synthesized Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite also exhibited an excellent photodegradation ability for Rhodamine B with a removal percentage up to 91.4% after 180 min of photocatalytic reaction.

Distillery industry generates a huge amount of wastewater, which contains a high strength of organic and inorganic load. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the physico-chemical pollution parameters and the occurrence of phytotoxic, cytotoxic and genotoxic pollutants in wastewater. The result revealed that values of wastewater parameters were recorded as 13268 mg l-1 (BOD), 25144 mg l-1 (COD), 25144 mg l-1 (TS), and 6634 mg l-1 (phosphate), while pH was alkaline. The organic compounds detected by GC-MS were quercetin 7,3',4'-trimethoxy, octadecadienoic acid, propanoic acid, glycocholic acid methyl ester, cantaxanthin, etc. The Allium cepa was used for the toxicity test with different concentrations of wastewater showed a significant level of reduction in root growth and length after exposure and the maximum reduction was at 25% and 20%. Phytotoxicity studies were performed using Cicer arietinum L. with different concentrations of wastewater, which showed adverse effects on seed germination, root length, and the effect was associated with the increasing concentration of wastewater. A. cepa root tips were used for the analysis of mitotic index (MI), nuclear abnormalities (NA), and chromosomal aberrations (CA). MI was decreasing significantly from 72% (control) to 33%, 22%, 23%, 21%, and 18% at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% wastewater concentration, respectively. The A. cepa root tip cells showed chromosomal aberrations and nuclear abnormalities like vagrant, stickiness, chromosomal loss, c-mitosis, binucleated, micronuclei, and aberrant cell. This study concluded that the wastewater treatment process is insufficient and the discharged waste needs a proper assessment to know the associated health risk.

The increased industrialization and urbanization generate a larger quantity of effluent that is discharged into the environment regularly. Based on the effluent composition produced from various industries, the number of hazardous substances such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, organic chemicals, microorganisms introduced into the aquatic systems vary. The conventional wastewater treatment systems do not meet the effluent standards before discharge and require a different treatment system before reuse. Adsorption is an eco-friendly technique that uses selective adsorbents to remove hazardous pollutants even at microscale levels. MXene, a 2-Dimensional nanomaterial with resplendent properties like conductivity, hydrophilicity, stability, and functionalized surface characteristics, is found as a potential candidate for pollutant removal systems. This review discusses the fabrication, characterization, and application of MXene based nanoparticles to remove many pollutants in water treatment systems. The improvement in surface properties and adsorption capacity of MXene based NPs, when modified using different modification agents, has also been discussed. Their feasibility in terms of economic and environmental aspects has been evaluated to understand their scope for practical application in large-scale industries. The challenges towards the synthesis and toxicity's importance have been discussed, with the appropriate recommendations.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Pyrus pashia Buch ham ex. D. Don (Kainth) fruit from the Himalayan region is traditionally consumed by native people in the form of decoctions for various clinical conditions including inflammatory diseases. However, scientific studies on the biofunctional properties of Kainth fruits are still scarce. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study is aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Kainth fruit extracts using in vitro and in vivo inflammation models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Free, esterified and bound fractions from the Kainth ethanolic extracts were prepared for determining the anti-inflammatory effect. The levels of 5-LOX and COX-2 were determined in vitro. The protein levels of cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α & IL-10) were quantitated by ELISA method in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW macrophages. Also, the anti-inflammatory potential of the Kainth fruit extracts was determined using the carrageenan-induced mice paw edema model. The bioaccessibility of Kainth fruit extracts was measured using a simulated in vitro digestion system (salivary, gastric and intestinal). RESULTS: The Kainth fruit extracts were partially purified to yield free, esterified and bound phenolics. Free and bound phenolics of Kainth fruits inhibited 5-Lipoxygenase, Cyclooxygenase-2 activities and pro-inflammatory cytokines (Interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α) expression in vitro. Also, oral administration of these extracts to the carrageenan-injected mice showed an anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing the pro-inflammatory cytokines and reducing the cellular infiltration in paw tissues. Also, both the extracts showed better bioavailability and bioaccessibility in in vitro and in vivo studies. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that free and bound phenolics from Kainth fruits that are rich in catechin, epicatechin, arbutin and chlorogenic acid exhibited anti-inflammatory effects and could potentially be used to treat inflammatory diseases.

Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are prepared from a natural resource Carica Papaya Leaves, by sand bath method. The as-synthesized CDs optical and structural properties were characterized by UltraViolet-Visible, FT- IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Also the size, shape, and particle size distribution was studied using Transmission electron microscopy technique. These CDs were examined for biomedical applications like free radical scavenging activity using DPPH assay, antioxidant activity using phosphomolybdate assay, and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity using membrane stabilization protocol. The CDs exhibited excellent biological activities at lower concentrations and showed notable half-maximal effective concentration (EC50). The EC50 of free radical scavenging activity (27.6 µg/mL), antioxidant activity (23.00 µg/mL), and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity (15.52 µg/mL) signifies that CDs can be potential therapeutic agents.

The microbial infections due to biofilm forming bacterial pathogens are very common in human subjects. The intensive application of antibiotics in integrated disease management strategy has led to increased multidrug resistance incommon pathogens. Thus, indicating need of developing an alternative method for the control of these multidrug resistant pathogens. Present study involves the Moringa oleifera aqueous extract mediated biological synthesis of silver (Ag nanoparticles (NPs)- Avg. size 82.5 nm; zeta potential = -27.9 mV), copper oxide (CuONPs- Avg. size 61 nm; zeta potential = -19.3 mV), iron oxide (FeONPs- Avg. size 83.3 nm; zeta potential = -9.37 mV) and alumina (AlONPs- Avg. size 87.3 nm; zeta potential = -10.9 mV) nanoparticles. Biological nanoparticles were detected by visual observation, spectrophotometric detection followed by zeta potential analysis, nanoparticle tracking analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis. Nanoparticles were further evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial potential, membrane damage effectiveness, biofilm inhibition activity by MTT assay. Nanoparticles were assessed against human pathogens viz. two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441 and Staphylococcus haemolyticus MTCC 3383) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC 111 and Salmonella enterica ser. Typhi MTCC 8767). The nanoparticles exhibited akin activity pattern against all pathogens studied i.e. AgNPs > CuONPs > AlONPs > FeONPs. Tested nanoparticles registered lower MIC values and more intensified growth inhibition against Gram-negative bacteria compared to their Gram-positive counterparts. These results pointed out that the M. oleifera mediated nanoparticles can be prospectivelyutilized in the development of alternative antimicrobials against diverse bacterial infections.

A 62 year old woman diagnosed with Ménière's disease, who underwent vairechanika nasya (VN) with shadbindu taila presented with short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) like phenomena immediately after the procedure. Rescue measures of abhyanga (local oil massage) and nadi sweda (local fomentation) were administered. Within half an hour the symptoms considerably declined and after 1 hour got completely relieved. The exact symptom disclosure by the patient who herself was a doctor helped in detecting the classic pattern of 'saw tooth phenomena' giving leads into a rare manifestation of probable SUNCT. Naranjo scale yielded zero score and thus the probable causality of VN with shadbindu taila could not be established so as to cause probable SUNCT as an adverse drug reaction (ADR). This case study is not put up for reporting an ADR of VN with shadbindu taila; rather this illustrates an uncommon, yet imperative adverse event of probable SUNCT while undergoing nasya procedure probably due to judgment error while fixing the VN dose in a patient with Ménière's disease. Transparent reporting of such unusual events during panchakarma procedures is necessary so that clinicians can understand, evaluate and take appropriate initiatives to manage them.

Currently, hundreds of different nanomaterials with a broad application in products that make daily lives a little bit easier, in every aspect, are being produced on an industrial scale at thousands of tons per year. However, several scientists, researchers, politics, and ordinary citizens have stated their concern regarding the life cycle, collateral effects, and final disposal of these cutting-edge materials. This review summarizes, describes, and discusses all manuscripts published in the Journal Citation Reports during the last 10 years, which studied the toxicity or the effects of nanomaterials on human and environmental health. It was observed that 23.62% of the manuscripts analyzed found no ecological or human risks; 54.39% showed that several nanomaterials have toxicological effects on the ecosystems, human, or environmental health. In comparison, only 21.97% stated the nanomaterials had a beneficial impact on those. Although only 54.39% of the manuscripts reported unfavorable effects of nanomaterials on ecosystems, human, or environmental health, it is relevant because the potential damage is invaluable. Therefore, it is imperative to make toxicological studies of nanomaterials with holistic focus under strictly controlled real conditions before their commercialization, to deliver to the market only innocuous and environmentally friendly products.
