RESUMO

Multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) production from phytochemicals is a sustainable process and an eco-friendly method, and this technique has a variety of uses. To accomplish this, we developed zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using the medicinal plant Tinospora cordifolia (TC). Instruments such as UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM with EDX, and high-resolution TEM were applied to characterize the biosynthesized TC-ZnONPs. According to the UV-vis spectra, the synthesized TC-ZnONPs absorb at a wavelength centered at 374 nm, which corresponds to a 3.2 eV band gap. HRTEM was used to observe the morphology of the particle surface and the actual size of the nanostructures. TC-ZnONPs mostly exhibit the shapes of rectangles and triangles with a median size of 21 nm. The XRD data of the synthesized ZnONPs exhibited a number of peaks in the 2θ range, implying their crystalline nature. TC-ZnONPs proved remarkable free radical scavenging capacity on DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), and NO (Nitric Oxide). TC-ZnONPs exhibited dynamic anti-bacterial activity through the formation of inhibition zones against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18 ± 1.5 mm), Escherichia coli (18 ± 1.0 mm), Bacillus cereus (19 ± 0.5 mm), and Staphylococcus aureus (13 ± 1.1 mm). Additionally, when exposed to sunlight, TC-ZnONPs show excellent photocatalytic ability towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. These findings suggest that TC-ZnONPs are potential antioxidant, antibacterial, and photocatalytic agents.

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a ciliated parasite causing ichthyophthiriasis (white spot disease) in freshwater fishes, results in significant economic loss to the aquaculture sector. One of the important predisposing factors for ichthyophthiriasis is low water temperature (i.e., below 20°C), which affects the health and makes freshwater fishes more susceptible to parasitic infections. During ichthyophthiriasis, fishes are stressed and acute immune reactions are compromised, which enables the aquatic bacterial pathogens to simultaneously infect the host and increase the severity of disease. In the present work, we aimed to understand the parasite-bacteria co-infection mechanism in fish. Later, Curcuma longa (turmeric) essential oil was used as a promising management strategy to improve immunity and control co-infections in fish. A natural outbreak of I. multifiliis was reported (validated by 16S rRNA PCR and sequencing method) in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus from a culture facility of ICAR-CIFRI, India. The fish showed clinical signs including hemorrhage, ulcer, discoloration, and redness in the body surface. Further microbiological analysis revealed that Aeromonas hydrophila was associated (validated by 16S rRNA PCR and sequencing method) with the infection and mortality of P. hypophthalmus, confirmed by hemolysin and survival assay. This created a scenario of co-infections, where both infectious agents are active together, causing ichthyophthiriasis and motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in P. hypophthalmus. Interestingly, turmeric oil supplementation induced protective immunity in P. hypophthalmus against the co-infection condition. The study showed that P. hypophthalmus fingerlings supplemented with turmeric oil, at an optimum concentration (10 ppm), exhibited significantly increased survival against co-infection. The optimum concentration induced anti-stress and antioxidative response in fingerlings, marked by a significant decrease in cortisol and elevated levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in treated animals as compared with the controls. Furthermore, the study indicated that supplementation of turmeric oil increases both non-specific and specific immune response, and significantly higher values of immune genes (interleukin-1ß, transferrin, and C3), HSP70, HSP90, and IgM were observed in P. hypophthalmus treatment groups. Our findings suggest that C. longa (turmeric) oil modulates stress, antioxidant, and immunological responses, probably contributing to enhanced protection in P. hypophthalmus. Hence, the application of turmeric oil treatment in aquaculture might become a management strategy to control co-infections in fishes. However, this hypothesis needs further validation.

In recent times, humans who have been exposed to influenza A viruses (IAV) may not become hostile. Despite the fact that KLRD1 has been discovered as an influenza susceptibility biomarker, it remains to be seen if pre-exposure host gene expression can predict flu symptoms. In this paper, we enable the examination of flu using deep neural networks from input human gene expression datasets with various subtype viruses. This study enables the utilization of these datasets to forecast the spread of flu and can provide the necessary steps to eradicate the flu. The simulation is conducted to test the efficiency of the model in predicting the spread against various input datasets. The results of the simulation show that the proposed method offers a better prediction ability of 2.98% more than other existing methods in finding the spread of flu.

The drug resistance is higher among Gram-negative bacteria and demands the usage of strong antibiotics which can in turn result in systemic toxicity. In the treatment of the chronic wounds harboring pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, the demand for an antimicrobial product that can be topically administered has been on the rise. In an effort to address the above issue, we have developed Colistimethate sodium (a high-end antibiotic) loaded chitosan hydrogel and characterized. The prepared hydrogel is very stable and observed to be bio- and hemo-compatible in nature. The antibacterial activity of the prepared hydrogel was studied against both ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) strains and clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The CMS incorporated hydrogel is also capable of inhibiting the biofilm formation. The developed hydrogel can be potentially being used for the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infected wounds.

AIMS: Various factors can influence the learning curve of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Initiating CRS and HIPEC programmes in low- and middle-income countries is challenging due to resource constraints and limited availability of expertise. We present our experience of CRS and HIPEC from a learning curve perspective among a cohort 155 peritoneal surface malignancy patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing CRS and HIPEC between May 2015 and February 2019 were included in the study. Patients were divided into two consecutive cohorts: the first 73 cases comprised the learning phase, group 1; the subsequent cohort of 82 patients were considered as the implementation phase, group 2. A comparative analysis of clinical and surgical outcome parameters was carried out between the two groups. RESULTS: The clinical spectrum was comparable among group 1/group 2. Most were ovarian (56.8%), colorectal (13.5%) and appendiceal (11.0%) malignancies. Group 2 had a higher number of moderate to high peritoneal cancer index patients (34.1% versus 19.1%), total peritonectomies (48.8% versus 45.2%), multi-visceral resections (colonic 41.5% versus 27.4%, small bowel 25.6% versus 19.1%, diaphragmatic 8.5% versus 6.5% and hepatic resections 8.5% versus 2.7%) and completeness of cytoreduction 0/1 rates (97.6% versus 93.1%). A lower incidence of intraoperative urological injuries (2.6% versus 12.3%) was noticed in group 2 (P = 0.007). Non-significant improvements seen in group 2 included surgery duration (6.0 ± 1.3 h versus 6.4 ± 1.7 h), intensive care unit stay (1.3 ± 1.1 days versus 1.8 ± 1.5 days), overall hospital stay (8.1 ± 0.9 days versus 8.8 ± 1.4 days) and reduction in Clavien-Dindo grade 3-4 complications (25.4% versus 36.9%). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the current study indicate that by implementing standard protocols and mentoring by an experienced team, a learning curve of CRS and HIPEC can be achieved in fewer than 75 cases. The baseline expertise of the treating team can also influence the learning curve.

Hypoxia is a common stressor in aquaculture systems, which causes severe physiological disturbances, ultimately leading to mortality or reduced productivity. Arginine, as a precursor of NO, has a role in enhancing oxygen delivery. Thus, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary arginine (Arg) in Cirrhinus mrigala exposed to hypoxia. The fish were fed with different levels of arginine for 60 days and exposed for 72 h to a sublethal level of hypoxia (0.50 ± 0.16 mg/L dissolved oxygen [DO]). The six treatment groups with three replicates were N0 (0% Arg + Normoxia), H0 (0% Arg + Hypoxia), N0.7 (0.70% Arg + Normoxia), H0.7 (0.70% Arg + Hypoxia), N1.4 (1.40% Arg + Normoxia), H1.4 (1.40% Arg + Hypoxia). Eighteen experimental units with twelve animals (5.8 ± 0.18 g) each were used for the trial.The results indicated that supplementation of arginine at 0.7 and 1.4% enhanced the hypoxia tolerance time, although the high dose (1.4%) did not yield any further increments. The exposure to hypoxia up-regulated Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1α mRNA expression and supplementation of arginine significantly decreased hypoxia induced up-regulation of HIF at 1.4%. Arginine supplementation partially or completely normalised the hypoxia induced changes in the metabolic enzymes of C. mrigala. The fish exposed to hypoxic conditions exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.05) lipid peroxidation levels than those maintained under normoxic conditions, while arginine feeding significant in reducing lipid peroxidation. Antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in hypoxia-exposed carp, indicating increased oxidative stress during the hypoxic exposure, that was improved in Arg-supplemented groups. However, arginine did not modulate erythrocyte countsalthough itreduced the erythrocyte fragility. We conclude arginine supplementation is effective in ameliorating hypoxia induced metabolic alterations and improving antioxidant defences in fish.

A 62 year old woman diagnosed with Ménière's disease, who underwent vairechanika nasya (VN) with shadbindu taila presented with short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) like phenomena immediately after the procedure. Rescue measures of abhyanga (local oil massage) and nadi sweda (local fomentation) were administered. Within half an hour the symptoms considerably declined and after 1 hour got completely relieved. The exact symptom disclosure by the patient who herself was a doctor helped in detecting the classic pattern of 'saw tooth phenomena' giving leads into a rare manifestation of probable SUNCT. Naranjo scale yielded zero score and thus the probable causality of VN with shadbindu taila could not be established so as to cause probable SUNCT as an adverse drug reaction (ADR). This case study is not put up for reporting an ADR of VN with shadbindu taila; rather this illustrates an uncommon, yet imperative adverse event of probable SUNCT while undergoing nasya procedure probably due to judgment error while fixing the VN dose in a patient with Ménière's disease. Transparent reporting of such unusual events during panchakarma procedures is necessary so that clinicians can understand, evaluate and take appropriate initiatives to manage them.

The catastrophic pandemic engendered due to the Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak which causes severe clinical afflictions on the respiratory system has severely high morbidity and mortality rates. The requirement of novel compounds is at utmost importance due to lack of targeted drug molecule to treat the afflictions and restrict the viral infection and for the usage of prophylactic treatment to avoid the spread of the infection is of utmost importance. Vitamin D is one such naturally available multifunctional molecule, which plays an eminent role in the immune system and instigation of numerous cellular pathways further promoting health benefits and enhancing the human quality of life. This article reviews the current standpoint scenario and future prevalence of vitamin D supplementation in the management of covid-19 patients. Novel findings of Vitamin D suggest that along with regulation of cell growth, neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing effects, it regulates the immune response also modulate cytokine Interleukin-6 (IL-6) by inducing progesterone-induced blocking factor (PIBF), given the IL-6 levels are considerably high in COVID-19 patients which increases the further complications. Vitamin D also have its effect on angiotensin converting enzyme (ACEII) inhibitor through which the COVID-19 virus makes cell entry. Numerous research data elucidate the play of Vitamin D, in complications of COVID-19 including the most common comorbid conditions, neurological manifestations and immunological aspects makes it an ideal molecule for adjuvant therapy. Including Vitamin D as add-on therapy in the management of COVID-19 might aid the arrest of infection and helps fight this arduous epidemic.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death due to infectious diseases in the world. Kerala a southern state in India aims to eliminate TB in the near future. In order to achieve its goal Kerala is providing various social support services to TB patients to ensure their smooth transition as they pass through the treatment cascade. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to qualitatively analyse the support systems provided for TB patients in Kerala and to assess the enablers and challenges faced during the provision of these services. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study using grounded theory approach was carried out among TB survivors, current TB patients and healthcare workers from all 14 districts of Kerala along with district health officials. A total of 14 in depth interviews were conducted among healthcare workers from all the districts of Kerala. Three FGDs were conducted, out of which two were among TB survivors and another one among current TB patients. The data was collected till data saturation was reached. The audio recorded data was transcribed, translated, manually coded and emerging themes and sub themes were identified. Using data triangulation, conclusions were made. RESULTS: It was observed that different TB support services were being provided across all the 14 districts of Kerala. Each of these initiatives were found to be unique in their own way for bridging the gaps in the in the continuum of care provided for TB patients. The main domains identified were grouped as support services provided for getting diagnosis, services provided after diagnosis of TB, prevention of TB and support provided to the patients reaching private sector. Under each of these domains a wide range of TB support initiatives that facilitated early diagnosis, good adherence to treatment, minimising patient inconveniences, stigma reduction, prevention out of pocket expenditure and emotional support were identified. Majority of these supportive measures were found not to be uniform throughout. Those are locally customised initiatives, evolved at different time periods with common objective of patient support. Community ownership, proactive health care system and political commitment contributed to these patient support systems. CONCLUSION: These support services offered to TB patients were found to be very effective in paving the way towards the goal of TB elimination in Kerala.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), the leading cause of visual disability in diabetics, is a significant complication of diabetes mellitus. Currently available conventional treatments for DR have certain limitations, considering which Ayurvedic treatment protocol was designed. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the Ayurvedic treatment protocol for DR. Materials and methods: This was a randomized, controlled, black box design clinical study conducted from April 2016 to September 2017 by the department of Shalakya Tantra of a tertiary academic hospital in Western India. A hundred patients of DR in the age group 30-70 years were randomly divided into two groups by simple random sampling using computer-generated random number tables. In the trial group (n = 70), the preparatory phase included Dipana-Pachana (stomachic and digestant), Koshtha Shodhana (mild therapeutic purgation), and Shiro Virechana (eliminative nasal medication). The treatment phase included Marsha Nasya (nasal medication) and Pratimarsha Nasya (nasal medication of mild dose) with Durvadi Ghrita, Takra Dhara (pouring medicated buttermilk over the scalp) with Siddha Takra, and intake of Rasayana Yoga (treatment duration - 3 months). In the control group (n = 30), patients were kept under conservative treatment and observed during the trial period of 3 months. Patients of both groups continued with their treatment for diabetes and DR if any. Two follow-ups were done at an interval of 15 days. The primary outcomes were objective signs like best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA); ophthalmoscopic signs such as superficial hemorrhages, dot-blot hemorrhages, hard exudates, cotton wool spots, neovascularization disc, neovascularization elsewhere, and fibrovascular proliferation; subjective symptoms such as diminished vision, blurred vision, frequent changes in presbyopia glasses, perception of flashes of light, floaters, and problem for dark adaptation. The secondary outcomes were fasting blood sugar (FBS), postprandial blood sugar (PPBS), urine sugar, serum cholesterol, hemoglobin (Hb), glycosylated HbA1C, liver function test, and renal function test outcomes were assessed before and after the treatment. Results: Ninety participants were included in the analysis of the primary outcome (62 in the trial and 28 in the control group). The trial group provided better results which were statistically significant on dot-blot hemorrhages, superficial hemorrhages, hard exudates, BCVA, FBS, and serum cholesterol. Both the groups provided almost similar effects in PPBS, Hb, HbA1C, and urine sugar which were statistically insignificant. Adverse effects were not reported in any of the patient among either groups. Conclusion: Ayurvedic treatment protocol is safe and effective in DR.

With the upsurge in the cases of COVID-19 around the world, plenty of potential COVID-19 complications are becoming more prevalent, including a higher risk of secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Mucormycosis is one such condition which has high prevalence among individuals with diabetes who were infected with COVID-19.The usage of steroids in the treatment further inflates the risk of infection and exacerbation of disease in pre-existent mucormycosis patients. Generally, Corticosteroid-induced diabetes can arise on long-term steroid medication, increasing the likelihood of mucormycosis. In patients with COVID-19, the indications and dose of corticosteroids should be properly regulated, and persons with diabetes who take insulin or oral anti-diabetic medicines should be cautious. To avoid poor outcomes, strategies to improve glycemic management should be emphasized. This narrative review elucidates different disciplines on rampant use of steroids, iron and zinc supplements as well as the methods utilized as primary or adjunctive treatment of this fatal condition. This article may help to pave the way for robust research that needs to be done to tackle the deadly triple burden of the disease.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) that comprises about 90% of all oral cancer cases is associated with poor prognosis due to its highly metastatic nature. The majority of OSCC treatment options are related detrimental side-effects. Hypothesis/Purpose: The present study aimed at deciphering the effects of a bioactive phytochemical, sodium danshensu, on human oral cancer cell metastasis. Methods and Results: The treatment of FaDu and Ca9-22 cells with different doses of sodium danshensu (25, 50, and 100 µM) caused a significant reduction in cellular motility, migration, and invasion, as compared to the untreated cells. This effect was associated with a reduced expression of MMP-2, vimentin and N-cadherin, together with an enhanced expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1. Further investigation on the molecular mechanism revealed that treatment with sodium danshensu caused significant reduction in p38 phosphorylation; however, phosphorylation of ERK1/2 significantly decreased only in FaDu cells, whereas p-JNK1/2 did not show any alteration. A combination of p38 and JNK1/2 inhibitors with sodium danshensu also reduced the migration in the FaDu and Ca9-22 cell lines. Conclusion: Collectively, the present study findings reveal that sodium danshensu execute anti-metastatic effect by suppressing p38 phosphorylation in human oral cancer. The study identifies sodium danshensu as a potential natural anticancer agent that can be used therapeutically to manage highly metastatic OSCC.

BACKGROUND: Time to revascularization is critical in improving outcomes in stroke thrombolysis. We studied the effectiveness of a mobile app based strategy to improve door-to-needle time (DNT) in treatment of acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke to the emergency department at a tertiary care hospital in Southern India between April 2017 - September 2018 were included. The app enabled rapid entry of patient parameters, the NIH stroke scale (NIHSS), thrombolysis checklist and dose calculation along with team synchronization, notifying all on-call members and team leaders of the patient movement, and sharing of radiological images. DNT captured from the app was compared to previous values from our center using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) after adjusting for differences in baseline variables. RESULTS: A total of 76 patients were thrombolysed during the study period, while using the mobile app. The mean DNT was 41 min, with 89% being thrombolysed within 60 min and 57% being thrombolysed within 45 min. Compared to 100 consecutive patients thrombolysed in the months prior to April 2017 where the mean DNT was 57 min, with 67% thrombolysed within 60 min and 47% being thrombolysed within 45 min, there was a mean DNT decrease of 16 min with 1.3x increase in DNT < 60 min. This difference was statistically significant after adjusting for age, sex and NIHSS Score (p=0.005, One-Way ANOVA). CONCLUSION: We have been able to demonstrate a significant improvement in DNT using mobile app as a tool to improve team performance.

In this study, we used ICI 182 780 (ICI), an estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist, to investigate the estrogenic activity of Danshen, and to further explored whether Danshen extract can block Leu27IGF-II-induced hypertrophy in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. We first used an IGF-II analog Leu27IGF-II, which specifically activates IGF2R signaling cascades and induces H9c2 cardiomyoblast cell hypertrophy. However, Danshen extract completely inhibited Leu27IGF-II-induced cell size increase, ANP and BNP hypertrophic marker expression, and IGF2R induction. We also observed that Danshen extract inhibited calcineurin protein expression and NFAT3 nuclear translocation, leading to suppression of Leu27IGF-II-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Moreover, the anti-Leu27IGF-II-IGF2R signaling effect of Danshen was totally reversed by ICI, which suggest the cardio protective effect of Danshen is mediated through estrogen receptors. Our study suggests that, Danshen exerts estrogenic activity, and thus, it could be used as a selective ER modulator in IGFIIR induced hypertrophy model.

The Indian major carp, mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), is a bottom-dwelling fish that can survive hypoxic episodes in its natural environment. We hypothesise that it can better survive hypoxic conditions by altering metabolic responses through GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) supplementation. In the first experiment, the hypoxia tolerance time of the fishes was evaluated under extreme anoxic conditions after feeding with GABA, which showed that GABA had improved survival time under hypoxia. To study the response of dietary GABA in hypoxia-exposed fish, the branchial HIF-1α expression levels, serum thyroid hormone levels and hepatic metabolic responses were assessed in the subsequent experiment. The treatment groups were fed for 60 days with experimental diets containing 4 levels of GABA (0.00% G, 0.50% G, 0.75% G and 1.0%G) and were subjected to 72-h hypoxia exposure (0.5 ± 0.02 mg L-1 dissolved oxygen (DO)) whereas a control group was maintained under normoxic conditions (6.0 ± 0.21 mg L-1 DO). The five treatment groups with three replicates were C0 (0% G + normoxia), H0 (0% G + hypoxia), H0.5 (0.50% G + hypoxia), H0.75 (0.75% G + hypoxia) and H1.0 (1.00% G + hypoxia). The results indicated that GABA supplementation triggered downregulation of HIF 1 alpha expression. When compared with the control group, decreased thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels were observed in the GABA-fed hypoxic groups. However, TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level remained unchanged in all the treatments. The LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) level in hypoxia-exposed groups was decreased by GABA supplementation. Our study demonstrated that GABA supplementation restores acute hypoxia-induced HIF-1α expression, thyroid hormone levels and LDH activities. On the other hand, it enhanced the citrate synthase (CS) activities at 0.5-1.00%, which showed a sharp decline in hypoxia. Hypoxia caused increase in the serum metabolites such as glucose, lactate, cholesterol and triglycerides. However, GABA supplementation was partially effective in reducing glucose and lactate level while triglycerides and cholesterol values remained unchanged. Overall, our results suggested a potential role of GABA in suppressing metabolism during hypoxia exposure, which can increase the chances of survival of the species Cirrhinus mrigala during hypoxia.

In this communication, we present the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using medicinally important Nardostachys jatamansi rhizome extract in the presence of sunlight. UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were employed to characterize the synthesized AgNPs. UV-visible spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of biosynthesized AgNPs. Transmission Electron Microscopic studies revealed the structure of spherical AgNPs in the diameter range of 10-15 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis and elemental mapping clearly confirmed the presence of silver in AgNPs samples. Interestingly, biomolecules functionalised AgNPs exhibited a remarkable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-biofilm activities and hence biosynthesized AgNPs from N. jatamansi can be used as a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) pollution is of serious concern due to its toxic effects in both humans and animals. The study investigates the protective effect of Tinospora cordifolia stem methanolic extract (TCME) on Cd induced hepatotoxicity. OBJECTIVE(S): The objective of the study was to explore the hepatoprotective effects of T. cordifolia extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were administered orally with Cd (5 mg/kg) and TCME (100 mg/kg) for 28 days. At the end of the treatment period, serum and liver tissues homogenates were subjected to biochemical analysis. RESULTS: Cd treated rats showed increased activities of the serum marker enzymes of liver damage such as AST and ALT along with increased levels of LPO and protein carbonyl content in liver tissues. Cd treatment also leads to decreased activities of endogenous antioxidants (SOD, CAT, GSH, GPx and GST), membrane ATPases (Na+K+ATPase, Ca2+ATPase and Mg2+K+ATPase) and the tissue glycoprotein levels (hexose, fucose, hexosamine and sialic acid). Histological analysis revealed vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes with focal necrosis upon Cd administration. TCME co-treatment restored the biochemical and histological alterations caused by Cd intoxication to near normal levels. CONCLUSION: The results of the present investigation reveal the hepatoprotective nature of T.cordifolia against Cd induced hepatotoxicity.

In the present study, a facile and green combustion method has been optimized for the synthesis of zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles using marine brown alga (seaweed), Sargassum wightii (S. wightii). Structural, optical and photoluminescence properties of the prepared ZrO2 nanoparticles were studied using XRD, FTIR, HR-TEM, UV-vis and PL spectroscopy. The average grain size of the nanoparticles calculated from the XRD pattern was around 4.8 nm which exhibits tetragonal structure. TEM results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles were uniformly monodispersed without aggregation. Formation of zirconia nanoparticles were confirmed by FTIR studies. The PL spectra exhibit broad emission peaks at the interface of UV and visible regions which can be assigned to the ionized oxygen vacancy in the material. Antibacterial activity of the synthesized zirconia nanoparticles was studied against gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains using agar well diffusion method. The prepared zirconia nanoparticles show significant antibacterial effect against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi due to their large surface area by their nanosize.
