Selenium contributes to physiological functions through its incorporation into selenoproteins. It is involved in oxidative stress defense. A selenium deficiency results in the onset or aggravation of pathologies. Following a deficiency, the repletion of selenium leads to a selenoprotein expression hierarchy misunderstood. Moreover, spirulina, a microalga, exhibits antioxidant properties and can be enriched in selenium.. Our objective was to determine the effects of a sodium selenite or selenium-enriched spirulina supplementation. Thirty-two female Wistar rats were fed for 12 weeks with a selenium-deficient diet. After 8 weeks, rats were divided into 4 groups and were fed with water, sodium selenite (20 µg Se/kg body weight), spirulina (3 g/kg bw), or selenium-enriched spirulina (20 µg Se/kg bw + 3 g spirulina/kg bw). Another group of 8 rats was fed with normal diet during 12 weeks. Selenium concentration and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured in plasma, urine, liver, brain, kidney, heart, and soleus. Expression of GPx (1, 3), Sel (P, S, T, W), SEPHS2, TrxR1, ApoER2, and megalin were quantified in liver, kidney, brain, and heart. We showed that a selenium deficiency leads to a growth delay, reversed by selenium supplementation despite a minor loss of weight in week 12 for SS rats. All tissues displayed a decrease in selenium concentration following deficiency. The brain seemed protected. We demonstrated a hierarchy in selenium distribution and selenoprotein expression. A supplementation of sodium selenite improved GPx activities and selenoprotein expression while a selenium-enriched spirulina was more effective to restore selenium concentration especially in the liver, kidney, and soleus.

Potato, corn and banana starches were blended in various combinations and ratios. Stability and clarity, freeze-thaw stability, water retention capacity and apparent viscosity of the pastes (prepared with a hydrothermic treatment using 100 degrees C for 30 min) were evaluated. In general, the samples stored at room temperature (28 degrees C) presented stability as well as low retrogradation rate. However, in the samples stored at 4 degrees C the propagation and maturation of crystals in the amylopectin component were favored, increasing sample retrogradation. A synergistic effect was shown in some starch blends. The blends had poor stability to freeze-thaw cycle, but a high synergestic effect was presented in water retention capacity. Potato:banana and corn:potato blends showed a synergistic effect in the apparent viscosity and in general, starch blends had stability during the 30-min test.

BACKGROUND: Mucocele is a cystic dilatation of the vermiform appendix that contains mucous material. It may be caused by benign or malignant diseases. AIM: To report and discuss four cases with mucocele. REPORT OF CASES: The main clinical manifestations were abdominal pain and changes in the bowel habits. In two cases, appendiceal mucocele was an incidental finding in the diagnostic work-up or operation for acute diverticulitis and acute cholecystitis, respectively. The diagnostic approach included barium enema and CT scan of the abdomen. In three cases, the mucocele was secondary to mucinous cystadenoma; two of them had a preoperative diagnosis of mucocele and underwent colonic preparation and right hemicolectomy, one patient underwent appendectomy alone. The remaining case underwent appendectomy alone, was found to have mucinous adenocarcinoma, and underwent a right hemicolectomy in a second operation. Postoperative outcome was adequate in all cases. CONCLUSION: Mucocele of the vermiform appendix is a rare disease. An appendectomy is an adequate treatment for benign disease. If malignant disease is demonstrated, a right hemicolectomy should be performed.
