RESUMO

The accumulation rate, fractions, and sorption capacity of phosphorus in sediments determine the removal efficiency and service life of constructed wetlands (CWs). Nine pilot-scale three-stage surface flow CWs were constructed to treat three loading rates of lagoon-pretreated swine wastewater, and surface sediment samples at initial and one-year treatment were collected to analyze the phosphorus fractions and sorption capacity. After one-year treatment, concentration of total phosphorus (TP) in sediments increased for high loading rates of wastewater, but remained stable for low loading rates. The annual accumulation rate of TP in sediments (Ma) was -43-445 mg kg-1 yr-1 at surface loading rate (SLR) of 36-355 g P m-2 yr-1. Their association could be described well using a sigmoid model, i.e., Ma = -23 + 538/(1 + exp.(-(SLR-262)/48)) (R2adj = 0.897, RMSE = 40.8, p < 0.01), indicating that the phosphorus accumulation rates in sediments were loading rate-dependent. The sum of inorganic phosphorus fractions contributed to 80-100% of the TP concentration, and accumulation of aluminum-bound phosphorus (AlP) and iron-bound phosphorus (FeP) was responsible for variability of TP concentration in sediments. Phosphorus sorption capacity of CW1 sediments increased by 1.3-1.8 times, attributed to increased pH, and concentrations of ammonium oxalate-extractable aluminum and iron in sediments due to the wastewater input. Selecting iron and aluminum-rich materials preferentially as substrates and regulating the ratio of metal ions to phosphorus in wastewater should be alternative enhancement strategies of CWs for phosphorus removal.

Four paddy soils were collected in Ningxiang County, Hunan province. These used with different long-term fertilization regimes, including a control without fertilizer (CK), chemical fertilization with nitrogen, phosphate, and kalium (NPK), straw fertilization combined with NPK (ST), and manure fertilization combinedwith NPK (OM). Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) technology and MicrorespTM method were used to study the effect of long-term fertilization on soil microorganism abundance, community structure, and activity. Results showed that the abundance of bacteria, fungi, gram-negative (G-) bacteria, and gram-positive (G+) bacteria in the soil from the OM treatment was generally higher than for the other treatments; these levels were lower in the ST and NPK treatments and lowest in the CK treatment. The principal components analysis (PCA) of PLFA showed that the community structure of microorganisms in NPK, ST, and OM treatments was altered in comparison with that in CK, especially in the case of the ST and OM treatments. MicroRespTM results revealed that compared to the CK treatment (1.28 µg·h-1), soil microorganisms in the OM treatment had the highest average utilization rate of multiple carbon sources (1.81 µg·h-1), followed by ST (1.19 µg·h-1), CK (1.28 µg·h-1), and NPK (0.95 µg·h-1). Furthermore, different long-term fertilization regimes resulted in distinct carbon source preferences for the soil microorganisms and revealed a significant alteration in the microbial community. Conclusively, long-term fertilizer with straw or manure changes the microbial community and is a benefit for improving the biomass and activity of microorganism in rice paddy soils.

Elemental selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have multiple biological activities. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of biogenic SeNPs (BioSeNPs) on CCl4-induced liver damage in mice. The results showed that: (i) when compared to sodium selenite (SS), BioSeNPs has a similar tissue distribution after intragastrical administration to mice; (ii) BioSeNPs and SS showed comparable efficacy in increasing the activities of glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase in liver cell lines, mice blood and liver; (iii) pretreatment with BioSeNPs inhibiting the elevation of activities of various enzymes significantly which included aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and liver lipid peroxide (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) in CCl4-treated mice; (iv) activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) were significantly increased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) after a pretreatment with BioSeNPs in CCl4-treated mice; (v) histopathological damages in the liver from CCl4-treated mice were ameliorated by a pretreatment with BioSeNPs. In conclusion, these results have shown that BioSeNPs is able to protect the liver from CCl4-induced hepatic damage via increasing the antioxidant capacity and inhibiting oxidative damage. BioSeNPs may have the potential to be used as a trace element food supplement inducing antioxidant bioactivities.

Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) at high concentrations is toxic to plants. In order to explore the NH4+-N tolerance of Myriophyllum aquaticum (M. aquaticum) and its ability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake, this study used a nutrient solution with three NH4+-N levels (70, 210, 420 mg·L-1) to incubate M. aquaticum for 21 d. The characteristics of plant physiology and N and P uptake of M. aquaticum were measured. At NH4+-N of 70 mg·L-1, M. aquaticum grew healthily, and shoot height and biomass linearly increased with the increase incubation time. Relative shoot height and biomass of M. aquaticum were 40.56 cm and 17.82 g·hole-1 on day 21, respectively. Compared to the control with 70 mg·L-1 ammonium, malondialdehyde (MDA) content of M. aquaticum was significantly increased; chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents were also high at NH4+-N of 210 mg·L-1. M. aquaticum suffered from the NH4+-N stress. However, the stress of 210 mg·L-1 NH4+-N did not affect its normal growth and there was no significant difference in the relative growth rate of the shoot height and biomass compared with the control. At NH4+-N of 420 mg·L-1, MDA contents of M. aquaticum doubled and the shoot height and biomass growth rate were only 27.4% and 17.9% of those for 70 mg·L-1 NH4+-N, indicating that M. aquaticum was subjected to serious stress that caused unhealthy growth or even death. At three NH4+-N levels, the ranges of N and P content of M. aquaticum were 30.7-53.4 mg·g-1 and 3.8-7.7 mg·g-1, respectively, which indicated that M. aquaticum had a high uptake capacity of N and P. M. aquaticum is an ideal wetland plant that has a good application prospect for constructed wetlands in biological treatment of high-ammonia wastewater.

To study the effects of long-term mining activities on the agricultural soil quality of Mengnuo town in Yunnan province, China, the heavy metal and soil enzyme activities of soil samples from 47 sites were examined. The results showed that long-term mining processes led to point source heavy metal pollution and Pb, Cd, Zn and As were the primary metal pollutants. Polyphenoloxidase was found the most sensitive soil enzyme activity and significantly correlated with almost all the metals (P < 0.05). Amylase (for C cycling), acid phosphatase (for P cycling) and catalase (for redox reaction) activities showed significantly positive correlations (P < 0.05) with Pb, Cd, Zn and As contents. The correlations between soil enzymes activities and Cd, Pb and Zn contents were verified in microcosm experiments, it was found that catalase activity had significant correlations (P < 0.05) with these three metals in short-term experiments using different soils under different conditions. Based on both field investigation and microcosm simulation analysis, oxidoreductases activities (rather than a specific enzyme activity) were suggested to be used as "core enzyme", which could simply and universally indicate the heavy metal pollution degrees of different environments. And hydrolases (for C, N, P and S recycling) could be used as a supplement to improve correlation accuracy for heavy metal indication in various polluted environments.

Light hydrocarbons accumulated in subsurface soil by long-term microseepage could favor the anomalous growth of indigenous hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms, which could be crucial indicators of underlying petroleum reservoirs. Here, Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was conducted to determine the bacterial community structures in soil samples collected from three typical oil and gas fields at different locations in China. Incubation with n-butane at the laboratory scale was performed to confirm the presence of "universal microbes" in light-hydrocarbon microseepage ecosystems. The results indicated significantly higher bacterial diversity in next-to-well samples compared with background samples at two of the three sites, which were notably different to oil-contaminated environments. Variation partitioning analysis showed that the bacterial community structures above the oil and gas fields at the scale of the present study were shaped mainly by environmental parameters, and geographic location was able to explain only 7.05% of the variation independently. The linear discriminant analysis effect size method revealed that the oil and gas fields significantly favored the growth of Mycobacterium, Flavobacterium, and Pseudomonas, as well as other related bacteria. The relative abundance of Mycobacterium and Pseudomonas increased notably after n-butane cultivation, which highlighted their potential as biomarkers of underlying oil deposits. This work contributes to a broader perspective on the bacterial community structures shaped by long-term light-hydrocarbon microseepage and proposes relatively universal indicators, providing an additional resource for the improvement of microbial prospecting of oil and gas.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an important liver disease in China, owing to the country's huge population and the availability of a multitude of drugs. Consequently, DILI is becoming an increasingly serious health problem. However, there is not enough relevant epidemiological data, and the clinical features of these patients are not clear. We conducted this study to report the causes and clinical features of DILI in hospitalized patients, and identify the mortality and predictive factors. We retrospectively collected and analyzed the data of all hospitalized patients whose discharge diagnosis was DILI at the Second Xiangya Hospital between January 2011 and December 2014. The data analyses were performed using SAS version 9.2. Among the 469 patients who were diagnosed with DILI at discharge, 361 met the criteria for DILI on re-evaluation. The crude annual incidence rate of DILI was 92.95 cases per 100,000 patients. Chinese herbal medicine was identified as the primary cause of DILI in 36.01 % of the patients. The overall mortality was 8.59 %. Alcohol consumption, use of antituberculosis drugs, serum total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, total protein, albumin, thrombinogen time, international normalized ratio, and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score were significantly correlated with DILI-associated mortality. Among them, the MELD score and albumin were found to be independent predictors of outcome in patients with DILI. Chinese herbal medicine was the primary cause of DILI in the identified patients. The MELD score and albumin were independent predictors of outcome in patients with DILI.

To investigate the temporal variation of the sediment prokaryote communities and their relation with the rapid increase of algae population in Taihu, a shallow eutrophic freshwater Lake, water and surface sediments were sampled from seven sites in different stages of algal bloom. The physicochemical characterization revealed positive correlations among the nutrient (N, P) parameters in the water and sediments, as well as TN/TP ratio 30.79 in average in water and 0.13 in sediments, demonstrating that P content was the limit factor for bloom in Taihu and sediment was an important nutrient resource for the water body. T-RFLP analysis of 16S rRNA genes revealed a diversity decrease of sediment prokaryotic communities along the bloom. The bacterial communities in sediments were more sensitive and shaped by the temporal changes, while archaea were more sensitive to the trophic level. The pyrosequencing data showed clear spatial and temporal changes in diversity of sediment bacteria. Betaproteobacteria was the most abundant group in all the samples, following by Delta-, Gama- and Alpha-proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chlorobi, Chloroflexi etc. At the genus level, Thiobacillus and Sulfuricurvum were the most dominant groups in the sediments, and the increase of Thiobacillus abundance in February might be used as bioindicator for the subsequent bloom. In addition, NO3 (-)-N was evidenced to be the main factor to regulate the bacterial community structure in the sediments. These results offered some novel and important data for the evaluation and predict the algal bloom in Taihu and can be reference for other shallow fresh water lakes.

The trace metal selenium is in demand for health supplements to human and animal nutrition. We studied the reduction of selenite (SeO3⁻²) to red elemental selenium by Rhodopseudomonas palustris strain N. This strain was cultured in a medium containing SeO3⁻² and the particles obtained from cultures were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive microanalysis (EDX) and X ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Our results showed the strain N could reduce SeO3⁻² to red elemental selenium. The diameters of particles were 80-200 nm. The bacteria exhibited significant tolerance to SeO3⁻² up to 8.0 m mol/L concentration with an EC50 value of 2.4 m mol/L. After 9 d of cultivation, the presence of SeO3²â» up to 1.0 m mol/L resulted in 99.9% reduction of selenite, whereas 82.0% (p<0.05), 31.7% (p<0.05) and 2.4% (p<0.05) reduction of SeO3⁻² was observed at 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 m mol/L SeO3²â» concentrations, respectively. This study indicated that red elemental selenium was synthesized by green technology using Rhodopseudomonas palustris strain N. This strain also indicated a high tolerance to SeO3⁻². The finding of this work will contribute to the application of selenium to human health.

High production cost is a major obstacle to the extensive use of microalgae biodiesel. To cut the cost and achieve higher biomass productivity, Chlorella minutissima UTEX2341 was cultured under photoheterotrophic conditions. With the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration of 26.37, 2.61 and 0.03 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹ respectively, a maximum biomass productivity of 1.78 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹ was obtained, which was 59 times more than that cultured under autotrophic condition. The lipid productivity reached 0.29 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹, which was 11.9 times higher than the highest value reported by Oh et al. (2010). The conversion rate of microalgae lipids to FAME was found to be elevated from 45.65% to 62.97% and the FAME productivity increased from 1.16 to 180.68 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹ after the optimization. 94% of the fatty acid of C. minutissima UTEX2341 was found to be composed of palmitic, oleic, linoleic and γ linoleic and the unsaturated fatty acids were the main parts (79.42%).

Effects of phosphorus of low concentrations on the growth and the phosphorus removal efficiency of Scenedesmus obliquus were investigated in this study. Results showed that Scenedesmus obliquus achieved a phosphorus removal efficiency of 100% within 22 h when the initial algal cell concentration was 1 x 10(5) /mL and the initial phosphorus concentration was 0.02-0.10 mg/L. With the initial phosphorus concentration increased from 0.02 mg/L to 0.10 mg/L, both growth velocity of Scenedesmus obliquus and maximum biomass increased obviously. Research found that phosphorus concentration had a significant influence on cell morphology of algal. In the external phosphorus sufficient conditions, most of algae cell present as four cells gather round form, then transformed into two cells side by side form in the absence of external phosphorus in culture medium, Finally in single as the main form of existence.

In this study, the feasibility of bioflocculant extraction from backwashing sludge to reduce its production costs was investigated. Results showed that ultrasound and base treatment could significantly enhance bioflocculant extraction efficiency, however, flocculating activity was affected. It was observed that bioflocculants extracted from sludge of pH 11.0 had no flocculating activity. In contrast, bioflocculants extracted from sludge of pH 5.0, named as M-1, had good flocculating activity. To further study the flocculating activity of M-1, factors such as bioflocculant dosage, temperature and pH of the reaction solution were tested. The optimal conditions were 6.0mg/l bioflocculant dosage and pH 5.0, at a temperature of 10 degrees C. Under these conditions, the flocculating rate of kaolin clay was 92.67%. The effectiveness of such bioflocculants in the decolorization of synthetically dyed wastewater was then examined. In flocculating methylene blue and fast blue in aqueous solutions, decolorization efficiency levels were 82.9% and 77.8%, respectively.

The bioassay-oriented fractionation of mistletoe crude extracts (MCEE) using 75% ethanol and culture products of mistletoe transformed by Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a photosynthetic bacterium (PSBT), revealed that the high cytotoxic activities were due to the petroleum ether extracts (PEs) and the acid-precipitated proteins from the aqueous extracts (AQs) of MCEE and PSBT. The isolated triterpenes may account for the activities of the PEs of MCEE and PSBT, respectively. Extraction of MCEE using petroleum ether led to the isolation of 3-epi-betulinic acid (1), betulonic acid (2), oleanolic acid (3), and beta-amyrin acetate (4), while petroleum ether extraction of PSBT led to the isolation of 1,3,4,betulinic acid (5), erythrodiol (6), and (3beta)-olean-12-ene-3,23-diol (7). The PE of PSBT exerted higher cytotoxicity than the PE of MCEE, which was due to the different triterpene contents of these two extracts. The cytotoxic activities of all compounds were tested, and the results revealed that compounds 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 contributed significantly to the cytotoxicities of both PEs. The AQ of the PSBT exerted almost the same cytotoxic activity and lower toxicity compared to the AQ of the MCEE. These findings indicate that mistletoe products biotransformed by R. sphaeroides could be used to treat cancers, since they have lower toxicities and higher antitumor activities compared to standard treatments.
