RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the related influencing factors of urinary tract infection in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 343 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia admitted to this hospital from January 2013 to December 2016, were selected and treated by TURP. Patients were divided into infection group and non-infection group according to the occurrence of urinary tract infection after operation. The possible influencing factors were collected to perform univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: There were 53 cases with urinary tract infection after operation among 343 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, accounting for 15.5%. The univariate analysis displayed that the occurrence of urinary tract infection in patients undergoing TURP was closely associated with patient's age ≥ 65 years old, complicated diabetes, catheterization for urinary retention before operation, no use of antibiotics before operation and postoperative indwelling catheter duration ≥ 5 d (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age ≥ 65 years old, complicated diabetes, catheterization before operation, indwelling catheter duration ≥ 5 d and no use of antibiotics before operation were risk factors of urinary tract infection in patients receiving TURP (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The patient's age ≥ 65 years old, catheterization before operation, complicated diabetes and long-term indwelling catheter after operation, can increase the occurrence of urinary tract infection after TURP, while preoperative prophylactic utilization of anti-infective drugs can reduce the occurrence of postoperative urinary tract infection.

RESUMO

A novel genetic male sterile germplasm was developed by successively crossing of (C. annuum x C. chinense) x C. pubescens and by chemical mutagenesis in pepper. The sterile anthers showed morphological abnormalities, but pistils developed normally with fine pollination capability. We investigated fertility segregation through sib-crossing of the same strains and test crossing by male sterile plants with 6 advanced inbred lines. The results showed that male fertility in the pepper was dominant in the F1 generation and segregated at a rate of 3:1 in the F2 generation, suggesting that monogenic male sterility was recessive and conformed to Mendelian inheritance. Cyto-anatomy analysis revealed that microspore abortion of sterile anthers occurred during telophase in the microspore mother cell stage when tapetal cells showed excessive vacuolation, resulting in occupation of the loculi. The microspore mother cells self-destructed and autolyzed with the tapetum so that meiosis in pollen mother cells could not proceed past the tetrad stage.

RESUMO

Pentacyclic triterpenoids including the oleanane, ursane and lupane groups are widely distributed in many medicinal plants, such as Glycyrrhiza species, Gymnema species, Centella asiatica, Camellia sinensis, Crataegus species and Olea europaea, which are commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications. A large number of bioactive pentacyclic triterpenoids, such as oleanolic acid, glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, ursolic acid, betulin, betulinic acid and lupeol have shown multiple biological activities with apparent effects on glucose absorption, glucose uptake, insulin secretion, diabetic vascular dysfunction, retinopathy and nephropathy. The versatility of the pentacyclic triterpenes provides a promising approach for diabetes management.

RESUMO

Forty patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria were respectively treated in an open randomized comparative study of dihydroartemisinin tablets given at total doses of 480 mg over 5 days and 640 mg over 7 days in a drug-resistant malaria endemic area in Hainan, China. The result showed that all patients were clinically cured. In 5-day and 7-day groups, the mean fever clearance times (FCT) were 26.1+/-10.2 and 21.1+/-11.8 hours respectively; the mean parasite clearance times (PCT) were 58.7+/-20.9 and 59.4+/-20.9 hours respectively, which showed no significant difference. 28-day follow-ups were accomplished on 39 and 37 cases respectively in two groups, the recrudescence rates were 20.5% (8/39) in 5-day group, while 2.7% (1/37) in 7-day group with significant difference (chi2=4.19, p<0.05). No clinical drug-related side effect was found in two groups during treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of Artesunate on falciparum malaria. METHODS: A randomized controlled study on the treatment of 90 uncomplicated falciparum malaria patients was carried out with 400 mg of artesunate tablet as a total dose over 3 days, 600 mg over 5 days and 800 mg over 7 days. RESULTS: All patients were cured. Fever clearance time (FCT) and parasite clearance time(PCT) among the three groups were similar. Parasite recrudescence rate within 28 days was 39.3% (11/ 28) in 3 day group, 6.9% (2/29) in 5 day group and 3.4% (1/29) in 7 day group (comparing 5 day group with 3 day group, P < 0.005, comparing 7 day group with 3 day group, P < 0.005). CONCLUSION: It indicated that parasite recrudescence rate may be effectively decreased by prolonging treatment courses.

RESUMO

Twenty-seven patients with gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum (PF) were divided into groups A, B, and C. A daily dose of 1200 mg artemisinin was given for 5 days to group A, a state dose of 750 mg of mefloquine to group B and a single dose of 750 mg mefloquine combined with 45 mg primaquine to group C. After treatment, the gametocyte count was taken daily, and infectivity of the gametocytes to Anopheles dirus via membrane feeding was also studied. Results showed that in group A, the density of gametocyte and infectivity were significantly reduced on days 4, 7, 14 and 21 after treatment; In group B, the gametocytes were significantly reduced on days 7, 14 and 21 and infectivity was significantly cut down on days 14 and 21 after medication. In group C, gametocytes disappeared in 5 out of 9 patients with failure of infecting mosquitoes in all 9 patients on day 4 after treatment. These indicate that artemisinin can effectively influence the infectivity of gametocytes of PF. Artemisinin is much better in blocking the transmission of PF malaria than mefloquine.

RESUMO

On experimental gastric ulcer models induced by 0.6mol/L HCl, ethyl alcohol or ligation of the pylorus, the preventive effects of unprepared oyster shell, calcined oyster shell 1(900 degrees C, 1h), calcined oyster shell 2(350 degrees C, 8h) were compared in Wistar rats. Results showed that antagonistic effects of calcined oyster shell 1 to the drug pathogenesis of peptic ulcer and the incidence of peptic ulcer after ligation of the pylorus were markedly greater.

RESUMO

Since 1979 several derivatives of artemisinin have been synthesized and studied in China. Artemisinin suppositories, artesunate (oral or parenteral), intramuscular artemether and dihydroartemisinin tablets have all proved rapidly effective. In all, 2352 patients (2150 with Plasmodium falciparum and 202 with P. vivax) have been included in clinical trials from our centre. All preparations have been well tolerated. These drugs have now replaced chloroquine and quinine for the treatment of malaria in China.

RESUMO

27 patients with gametocytes of P. falciparum were divided into groups A, B and C. 1,200 mg of artemisinine was given as a daily dose for 5 days to group A, 750 mg of mefloquine plus 45 mg of primaquine as a single dose to group C. After medication, gametocyte count was observed daily in addition to the infectivity of gametocytes of P. falciparum to Anopheles dirus. In group A, the density of gametocytes and the infectivity were significantly reduced on days 4, 7, 14 and 21 during the study. In group B, the density of gametocytes was significantly reduced on days 7, 14 and 21 and the infectivity was obviously lowered on days 14 and 21 after medication. In group C, gametocytes disappeared in 5 out of 9 patients with the failure of infection to mosquitoes on day 4 after treatment. This indicates that artemisinine can effectively influence the infectivity of gametocytes of P. falciparum. Artemisinine is superior to mefloquine in blocking the transmission of P. falciparum malaria.

RESUMO

The ethereal extract and decoction from raw Semen Armeniacae Amarum were found to induce EBV-EA activation in Raji cells cultured in vitro. Experiments show that both the extract and decoction have tumor-promoting activities, but the EBV-EA activation can be decreased by three kinds of processing-parching, scalding or parching after scalding, of which parching and parching after scalding are better. Moreover, parching after scalding is the best to enhance the relaxing of bowels, inactivate the amygdalase and increase the decoction rate of amygdalin.

RESUMO

Sixty patients with primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC) were treated with transcatheter hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy (TAI) and embolization (TAE) from June 1988 to December 1989. There were 54 males and 6 females. Their age ranged from 22 to 72 years with an average of 52. Course of disease ranged from 1/2 to 12 months. In these 60 cases, 31 had Stage II and 29 Stage III lesions. Using Seldinger's method per femoral artery, conventional hepatic angiography was performed. Afterwards, adriamycin or cisplatin infusion was carried out, followed by chemoembolization therapy of tumor vessels using mixture of ethiodized oil or iophendylate and mitomycin C. Finally, gelatin sponge block was used for proximal arterial embolization. After the treatment procedure, abdominal pain was relieved, tumor reduced in size, AFP, r-GT, AKP and LDH declined to various degrees and the survival time was prolonged. The 3-, 6- and 12-month survival rates were 93.3% (56/60), 67.3% (37/49) and 33.3% (9/27), respectively. It is indicated that TAI and TAE, being safe and effective, is the treatment of choice for patients with unresectable PHC.
