RESUMO

Estrogen receptors (ERs) are transcription factors with two subtypes: estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERß), which are essential for the maintenance of human health and play a regulatory role in common diseases such as breast cancer, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disorders, liver injuries and lung cancers. A number of phytochemicals extracted from various fruits and vegetables have been demonstrated to exhibit estrogenic effects and are termed phytoestrogens. As modulators of ERs, phytoestrogens can be involved in the prevention and treatment of multiple diseases as complementary or alternative therapeutic agents and have a variety of health benefits for humans. This article reviews the health benefits of phytoestrogens in clinical and epidemiologic studies for several diseases and also provides a detailed description of the molecular mechanisms of their action. A brief comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of natural phytochemicals compared to synthetic drugs is also presented. The role of phytoestrogens in the treatment of diseases and human health requires further research to fully realize their therapeutic potential.

BACKGROUND: Soybean is one of the most important oil crops in the world. The domestication of wild soybean has resulted in significant changes in the seed oil content and seed size of cultivated soybeans. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of seed formation and oil content accumulation, WDD01514 (E1), ZYD00463 (E2), and two extreme progenies (E23 and E171) derived from RILs were used for weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) combined with transcriptome analysis. RESULTS: In this study, both seed weight and oil content in E1 and E171 were significantly higher than those in E2 and E23, and 20 DAF and 30 DAF may be key stages of soybean seed oil content accumulation and weight increase. Pathways such as "Photosynthesis", "Carbon metabolism", and "Fatty acid metabolism", were involved in oil content accumulation and grain formation between wild and cultivated soybeans at 20 and 30 DAF according to RNA-seq analysis. A total of 121 oil content accumulation and 189 seed formation candidate genes were screened from differentially expressed genes. WGCNA identified six modules related to seed oil content and seed weight, and 76 candidate genes were screened from modules and network. Among them, 16 genes were used for qRT-PCR and tissue specific expression pattern analysis, and their expression-levels in 33-wild and 23-cultivated soybean varieties were subjected to correlation analysis; some key genes were verified as likely to be involved in oil content accumulation and grain formation. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, these results contribute to an understanding of seed lipid metabolism and seed size during seed development, and identify potential functional genes for improving soybean yield and seed oil quantity.

Algae symbiosis technology shows great potential in the synchronous treatment of biogas slurry and biogas, which has promising applications. For improving nutrients and CO2 removal rates, the present work constructed four microalgal systems: Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) monoculture, C. vulgaris-Bacillus licheniformis (B. licheniformis), C. vulgaris-activated sludge, and C. vulgaris-endophytic bacteria (S395-2) to simultaneously treat biogas as well as biogas slurry under GR24 and 5DS induction. Our results showed that the C. vulgaris-endophytic bacteria (S395-2) showed optimal growth performance along with photosynthetic activity under the introduction of GR24 (10-9 M). Under optimal conditions, CO2 removal efficiency form biogas, together with chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus and total nitrogen removal efficiencies from biogas slurry reached 67.25 ± 6.71%, 81.75 ± 7.93%, 83.19 ± 8.32%, and 85.17 ± 8.26%, respectively. The addition of symbiotic bacteria isolated from microalgae can promote the growth of C. vulgaris, and the exogenous addition of GR24 and 5DS can strengthen the purification performance of the algae symbiosis to achieve the maximum removal of conventional pollutants and CO2.

Background: Compound fuling granule (CFG) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula that is used for more than twenty years to treat ovarian cancer (OC) in China. However, the underlying processes have yet to be completely understood. This research is aimed at uncovering its molecular mechanism and identifying possible therapeutic targets. Methods: Significant genes were collected from Therapeutic Target Database and Database of Gene-Disease Associations. The components of CFG were analyzed by LC-MS/MS, and the active components of CFG were screened according to their oral bioavailability and drug-likeness index. The validated targets were extracted from PharmMapper and PubChem databases. Venn diagram and STRING website diagrams were used to identify intersection targets, and a protein-protein interaction network was prepared using STRING. The ingredient-target network was established using Cytoscape. Molecular docking was performed to visualize the molecule-protein interactions using PyMOL 2.3. Enrichment and pathway analyses were performed using FunRich software and Reactome pathway, respectively. Experimental validations, including CCK-8 assay, wound-scratch assay, flow cytometry, western blot assay, histopathological examination, and immunohistochemistry, were conducted to verify the effects of CFG on OC cells. Results: A total of 56 bioactive ingredients of CFG and 185 CFG-OC-related targets were screened by network pharmacology analysis. The potential therapeutic targets included moesin, glutathione S-transferase kappa 1, ribonuclease III (DICER1), mucin1 (MUC1), cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2), E1A binding protein p300, and transcription activator BRG1. Reactome analysis showed 51 signaling pathways (P < 0.05), and FunRich revealed 44 signaling pathways that might play an important role in CFG against OC. Molecular docking of CDK2 and five active compounds (baicalin, ignavine, lactiflorin, neokadsuranic acid B, and deoxyaconitine) showed that baicalin had the highest affinity to CDK2. Experimental approaches confirmed that CFG could apparently inhibit OC cell proliferation and migration in vitro; increase apoptosis; decrease the protein expression of MUC1, DICER1, and CDK2; and suppress the progression and distant metastasis of OC in vivo. DICER1, a tumor suppressor, is essential for microRNA synthesis. Our findings suggest that CFG may impair the production of miRNAs in OC cells. Conclusion: Based on network pharmacology, molecular docking, and experimental validation, the potential mechanism underlying the function of CFG in OC was explored, which supplies the theoretical groundwork for additional pharmacological investigation.

BACKGROUND: Modified Bu-Fei decoction (MBFD), a formula of traditional Chinese medicine, is used for treating lung cancer in clinic. The actions and mechanisms of MBFD on modulating lung microenvironment is not clear. PURPOSE: Lung microenvironment is rich in vascular endothelial cells (ECs). This study is aimed to examine the actions of MBFD on tumor biology, and to uncover the underlying mechanisms by focusing on pulmonary ECs. METHODS: The Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) xenograft model and the metastatic cancer model were used to determine the efficacy of MBFD on inhibiting tumor growth and metastasis. Flow cytometry and trans-well analysis were used to determine the role of ECs in anti-metastatic actions of MBFD. The in silico analysis and function assays were used to identify the mechanisms of MBFD in retarding lung metastasis. Plasma from lung cancer patients were used to verify the effects of MBFD on angiogenin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4) in clinical conditions. RESULTS: MBFD significantly suppressed spontaneous lung metastasis of LLC tumors, but not tumor growth, at clinically relevant concentrations. The anti-metastatic effects of MBFD were verified in metastatic cancer models created by intravenous injection of LLC or 4T1 cells. MBFD inhibited lung infiltration of circulating tumor cells, without reducing tumor cell proliferations in lung. In vitro, MBFD dose-dependently inhibited trans-endothelial migrations of tumor cells. RNA-seq assay and verification experiments confirmed that MBFD potently depressed endothelial ANGPTL4 which is able to broke endothelial barrier and protect tumor cells from anoikis. Database analysis revealed that high ANGPTL4 levels is negatively correlated with overall survival of cancer patients. Importantly, MBFD therapy reduced plasma levels of ANGPTL4 in lung cancer patients. Finally, MBFD was revealed to inhibit ANGPTL4 expressions in a hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)-dependent manner, based on results from specific signaling inhibitors and network pharmacology analysis. CONCLUSION: MBFD, at clinically relevant concentrations, inhibits cancer lung metastasis via suppressing endothelial ANGPTL4. These results revealed novel effects and mechanisms of MBFD in treating cancer, and have a significant clinical implication of MBFD therapy in combating metastasis.

OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis assessed the treatment effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with vascular dementia. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The odds ratios (ORs) and weighted mean differences (WMDs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the pooled effect estimates using a random-effects model for categorical and continuous outcomes, respectively. RESULTS: Thirty-four RCTs (2672 patients) were selected for the final meta-analysis. The use of acupuncture showed association with an increased incidence of effective rate (OR: 3.28; 95 % CI: 2.54-4.24; P < 0.001). The pooled WMDs revealed that acupuncture was significantly associated with an improvement in the Hasegawa dementia scale (HDS) (WMD: 4.31; 95 % CI: 3.15-5.47; P < 0.001), and Mini-Mental State Examination scores (MMSE) (WMD: 3.07; 95 % CI: 2.40-3.74; P < 0.001). However, the use of acupuncture showed no association with the level of Activities of daily living (ADL) (WMD: 1.93; 95 % CI: - 2.53 to 6.38; P = 0.397). Finally, acupuncture was associated with lower levels of Scale for the differentiation of syndromes of vascular dementia (SDSVD) (WMD: - 2.15; 95 % CI: - 4.14 to - 0.16; P = 0.034), and National Institutes of Health stroke scale (NIHSS) (WMD: - 3.90; 95 % CI: - 4.87 to - 2.94; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture is probably helpful in vascular stroke, but strong supportive data are not yet available. Acupuncture should be used cautiously, owing to the analysis of this study based on low to moderate evidence. Further high-quality, large-scale RCTs should be conducted.

Nonvolatile logic devices are crucial for the development of logic-in-memory (LiM) technology to build the next-generation non-von Neumann computing architecture. Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (Fe FET) are one of the most promising candidates for LiMs because of high compatibility with mainstream silicon-based complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processes, nonvolatile memory, and low power consumption. However, because of the unipolar characteristics of a Fe FET, a nonlinear XOR or XNOR logic gate function is difficult to realize with a single device. In addition, because single Fe polarization switch modulation is available in the devices, a reconfigurable logic gate usually needs multiple devices to construct and realize fewer logic functions. Here, we introduced polarization-switching (PS) and charge-trapping (CT) effects in a single Fe FET and fabricated a multi-field-effect transistor with bipolar-like characteristics based on advanced 10 nm node fin field-effect transistors (PS-CT FinFET) with 9 nm thick Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films. The special hybrid effects of charge-trapping and polarization-switching enabled eight Boolean logic functions with a single PS-CT FinFET and 16 Boolean logic functions with two complementary PS-CT FinFETs were obtained with three operations. Furthermore, reconfigurable full 1 bit adder and subtractor functions were demonstrated by connecting only two n-type and two p-type PS-CT FinFET devices, indicating that the technology was promising for LiM applications.

Xian-Xiong-Gu-Kang is composed of Epimedium brevicornu, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Radix clematidis, Cinnamomum cassia, and Fructus xanthii. It is used to treat numbness and pain of limbs. In this study, we developed a method to simultaneously quantify 11 components of Xian-Xiong-Gu-Kang (icarrin, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariside II, chlorogenic acid, ligustilide, senkyunolide A, senkyunolide I, ferulic acid, and cinnamic acid) in rat plasma using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry. Chromatographic separation was performed on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column using gradient elution with a mobile phase comprising acetonitrile and 0.05% (v/v) formic acid aqueous solution. Mass spectrometry detection was performed using positive and negative electrospray ionization in the multiple reaction monitoring mode. The calibration curves of the 11 constituents were linear, with correlation coefficients > 0.99. The intra- and interday accuracy and precision values were within ±15.0%. The extraction recoveries of the 11 constituents and two internal standards were between 66.05 and 105.40%, and the matrix effects were between 86.74 and 112.86%. Using this method, the pharmacokinetic features of the 11 constituents were elucidated in the plasma of osteoarthritic rats after oral administration of the Xian-Xiong-Gu-Kang extract.

The formation of beta-amyloid (Aß) plaques is a classical hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that is associated with the promotion of neuroinflammation and subsequent neurotoxicity. Given the limited therapeutic options for targeting and clearing Aß plaques in AD, there is an urgent need to develop effective approaches to reduce plaque accumulation. The objective of this study was to validate mild magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) hyperthermia technology as a strategy to clear Aß deposits and determine the impact on microglia functionality. Our results demonstrated that the heating of MNPs localized to Aß aggregates upon exposure to high frequency alternating magnetic field (AMF) was sufficient to disrupt Aß plaques, resulting in its fragmentation. Importantly, this could facilitate the phagocytic clearance of Aß as well as attenuate pro-inflammatory responses by human microglial cells. Our results support the feasibility of mild MNP/AMF hyperthermia as a new strategy for reducing beta-amyloid burdens in Alzheimer's disease.

Autophagy has become a promising target for cancer therapy. Fangchinoline (Fan) has been shown to exert anticancer effects in some types of cancers. However, the anticancer effects on colorectal cancer (CRC) and the underlying mechanisms have never been elucidated. More specifically, regulation of autophagy in CRC by Fan has never been reported before. In the present study, Fan was found to induce apoptosis and autophagic flux in the CRC cell lines HT29 and HCT116, which was reflected by the enhanced levels of LC3-II protein and p62 degradation, and the increased formation of autophagosomes and puncta formation by LC3-II. Meanwhile, combination with the early-stage autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) but not the late-stage autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ) further increased Fan-induced cell death, which suggested the cytoprotective function of autophagy induced by Fan in both HT29 and HCT116 cells. Moreover, Fan treatment demonstrated a dose- and time-dependently increase in the phosphorylation of AMPK and decrease in the phosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and ULK1, leading to the activation of the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 signaling pathway. Furthermore, in the HT29 xenograft model, Fan inhibited tumor growth in vivo. These results indicate that Fan inhibited CRC cell growth both in vitro and in vivo and revealed a new molecular mechanism involved in the anticancer effect of Fan on CRC, suggesting that Fan is a potent autophagy inducer and might be a promising anticancer agent.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of early recurrent intussusception after ultrasound-guided saline reduction, and to explore the factors leading to early recurrence. METHODS: The retrospective observational case-control study was conducted at Weifang People's Hospital, Shandong, China, and comprised data from January 2015 to December 2017 related to paediatric intussusception patients aged 0-12 years who underwent ultrasound-guided saline enema reduction. The patients were divided into two recurrent and non-recurrent groups. Clinical characteristics of the patients with early recurrence were analysed. Factors compared between the groups were gender, age, onset season, onset-to-treatment time interval, blood in stool, fever, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting, weight and pathology. Data was analysed using SPSS 22. RESULTS: Of the 672 subjects, 86(13%) were patient with early recurrence while 586(87%) had no early recurrence and acted as controls. Among the patients, 70(81.4%) were aged 6-36 months. In 52(60.5%) patients, recurrence was once, and in 23(26.7%) twice. There were 141 episodes of intussusception; 24(17%) occurring in <12 hours, 85(60.2%) in 12-24 hours. Also, 5(6%) patients required surgery for reduction. Compared to the controls, the second quarter, heavier body weight and pathology were the factors leading to early recurrence of intussusceptions (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The second quarter, heavier body weight and pathological leading points were found to be factors leading to early recurrent intussusception.

This study is to determine the role and mechanism of cryptotanshinone (CTS) in allergic airway inflammation. Asthma induced by OVA was established in BALB/c mice. We found increased airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), increased inflammatory cell infiltration, elevated levels of TNF-α, interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-13, decreased interferon gamma (IFN-γ) in lung tissue, increased content of total immunoglobulin E (IgE), OVA specific IgE, Eotaxin, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and phosphorylation of p38 MAPK in lung tissue. However, the administration of CTS significantly decreased AHR in asthmatic mice, reduced inflammation around the bronchioles and inflammatory cells around airway, regulated cytokine production, reduced the total IgE and OVA-specific IgE levels, and inhibited NF-κB activation and p38 MAPK phosphorylation. In vitro experiments in 16 HBE cells revealed that CTS attenuated CAM-1 and IL-6 expression. These results indicate that CTS alleviates allergic airway inflammation by modulating p38 MAPK phosphorylation and NF-κB activation.

The development of gastritis is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. Current invasive gastritis diagnostic methods are not suitable for monitoring progress. In this work based on 78 gastritis patients and 50 healthy individuals, we observed that the variation of tongue-coating microbiota was associated with the occurrence and development of gastritis. Twenty-one microbial species were identified for differentiating tongue-coating microbiomes of gastritis and healthy individuals. Pathways such as microbial metabolism in diverse environments, biosynthesis of antibiotics and bacterial chemotaxis were up-regulated in gastritis patients. The abundance of Campylobacter concisus was found associated with the gastric precancerous cascade. Furthermore, Campylobacter concisus could be detected in tongue coating and gastric fluid in a validation cohort containing 38 gastritis patients. These observations provided biological evidence of tongue diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine, and indicated that tongue-coating microbiome could be a potential non-invasive biomarker, which might be suitable for long-term monitoring of gastritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and effectiveness of ultrasound-guided saline enema to treat intussusception and to analyze the risk factors affecting short-term recurrence and reduction failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected patients who had undergone intussusception reduction via ultrasound-guided saline enema from January 2010 to December 2017. The overall success rate, overall pathologic intussusception rate, and pathologic intussusception rate were calculated in each group. All the patients were divided into two groups: the successfully reduced group and the failed reduction group. Then, the successfully reduced patients were divided into two groups: the short-term recurrence group and the short-term non-recurrence group. The differences between each of the two sets of groups were analyzed, and the risk factors affecting short-term recurrence and failure of intussusception were analyzed. RESULTS: During the 8-year study period, a total of 1793 patients with intussusception were treated with ultrasound-guided saline enema reduction in our hospital. Among these patients, 1743 (97.2%) experienced successful reduction, 29 (1.6%) had pathologic intussusception, and 1 experienced perforation. After applying the univariate analysis and logistic regressive multivariate analysis, we found that age above 2 years and the absence of fever were risk factors for the early recurrence of intussusception. Pathologic intussusception was a risk factor for reduction failure. CONCLUSION: The overall success rate of ultrasound-guided saline enemas was 97.2%, and the pathologic intussusception rate was 1.6%. Age above 2 years and the absence of fever were risk factors for short-term recurrence, and pathologic intussusception was a risk factor for the failure of reduction.

BACKGROUND: A laboratory-silo study was conducted to evaluate the fermentation quality, feed-nutritive value and aerobic stability of sweet sorghum silage with or without oil-extracted microalgae supplementation. Sweet sorghum was mixed with four microalgae levels (0%, 1%, 2% and 3% on a dry matter basis; control, M1, M2 and M3, respectively) and ensiled for 45 d. Further, the four experimental silages were subjected to an aerobic stability test lasting 7 d. RESULTS: All the silages except M3 silage had good fermentative characteristics with low pH and ammonia nitrogen concentrations, and high lactic acid concentrations and favorable microbial parameters. Meanwhile, oil-extracted microalgae supplementation improved the feed-nutritional value of sweet sorghum silage. Fibre (neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, acid detergent lignin and cellulose) concentrations decreased, while dry matter and crude protein levels markedly increased (P < 0.05). Compared with the control (69.7 h), treatments M2 and M3 improved the aerobic stability of sweet sorghum silage by 43.8% and more than 143% respectively, and decreased the clostridia spore counts during the stage of air exposure. CONCLUSION: Sweet sorghum silage produced with 2% oil-extracted microalgae addition was the most suitable for animal use due to the optimal balance of fermentation quality, feed-nutritional value and aerobic stability, which merits further in vivo studies using grazing ruminants. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chitosan microspheres with diameter of 14.3-48.5 µm were prepared by emulsion method and using natural vanillin as cross-linking agent. The surface morphology and microstructure of the microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, etc. The hollow microspheres showed a well-defined spherical shape with median diameter of 30.3 µm and possessed a uniform surface with micro-wrinkles, which is in favor of the drug release. Interpenetrating network cross-linking mechanism might result from the Schiff base reaction and the acetalization of hydroxyl and carbonyl between chitosan and vanillin. Berberine, as a model drug, was loaded in the microspheres and released in a sustainable manner. The drug loading ratio could change from 9.16% to 29.70% corresponding to the entrapment efficiency of 91.61% to 74.25%. In vitro cell culture study using MG63 cells and in vivo implantation clearly showed that the microspheres could provide favorable cell attachment and biocompatibility. The results confirm that the drug-loaded vanillin-crosslinked chitosan microspheres could be a worthy candidate either as carriers of drugs and cells, or as therapeutic matrix for bone repair and regeneration.

The ideal binary mask (IBM) that was originally defined in anechoic conditions has been found to yield substantial improvements in speech intelligibility in noise. The IBM has recently been extended to reverberant conditions where the direct sound and early reflections of target speech are regarded as the desired signal. It is of great interest to know how the division between early and late reflections impacts on the intelligibility of the IBM-processed noisy reverberant speech. In this present study, the division between early and late reflections in three rooms was first determined by four typical estimation approaches and then used to compute the IBMs in reverberant conditions. The IBMs were then applied to the noisy reverberant mixture signal for segregating the desired signal, and the segregated signal was further presented to normal-hearing listeners for word recognition. Results showed that the IBMs with different divisions between early and late reflections provided substantial improvements in speech intelligibility over the unprocessed mixture signals in all conditions tested, and there were small, but statistically significant, differences in speech intelligibility between the different IBMs in some conditions tested.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a dual-reporter gene system that will be applicable for use as a tool to screen and evaluate therapeutic drug compounds that inhibit transcription of the gene encoding collagen I, chain at1 (COL1A1). METHODS: The full-length eDNA of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) was cloned by RT-PCR and inserted into two vectors, pcDNA3.1 and pJW4303, for construction of two eukaryotic expression vectors, pcDNA3.1-TGFbeta1 and pJW4303-TGFbeta1.Next, the promoter region of COL1A1, cloned by PCR using human genome DNA as template, was inserted into the vector pGL4.29 to construct the reporter gene vector, pGL4.29-COL1A1 promoter.All three recombinant vectors were verified by restriction enzyme digestion and DNA sequencing.Either the pcDNA3.1-TGFbeta1 or pJW4303-TGFbeta1 vector along with the pGL4.29-COL1A1 promoter vector or a pRL-null, control reporter, vector were co-transfected into the LX-2 human hepatic stellate cells to establish the transcription-activated dualreporter gene system.This system was used as a cell model for screening anti-liver fibrosis compounds that inhibit the transcription of COL1A1.Dexamethasone, a model drug that is known to inhibit the expression of COL1A1, was used as a control to validate the dual-reporter gene system. RESULTS: The two TGFbeta1-expressing vectors and the reporter gene vector containing the promoter region of COL1A1 were successfully constructed.The results of a dual-reporter gene assay showed that TGFbeta1 co-expression increased the activity of the COL1A1 promoter by above 200-fold (t =21.78, P =0.0001), whereas in the absence of TGF31 co-expression the activity was below 2-fold (t =3.396, P =0.0274).The transcriptionactivated dual-reporter gene system was successfully established.The model drug, dexamethasone, effectively inhibited the activity of the COL 1A1 promoter in dose-dependent manner; the activity decreased 29.6% with 10 mumol/L dexamethasone (t =4.140, P =0.0144) and 53.9% with 100 mumol/L (t =6.193, P =0.0035). CONCLUSION: The dual-luciferase reporter system of TGFbeta1 and COL1A1 co-expression developed here can be used as a cell model to screen and evaluate anti-liver fibrosis compounds that inhibit activity of the COL1A1.

A novel composite hydrogel was prepared via UV irradiation copolymerization of acrylic acid and maize bran (MB) in the presence of composite initiator (2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone and ammonium persulfate) and cross-linker (N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide)). Under the optimized conditions, maize bran-poly(acrylic acid) was obtained (2507 g g(-1) in distilled water and 658 g g(-1) in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution). Effects of granularity, salt concentration, and various cations and anions on water absorbency were investigated. It was found that swelling was extremely sensitive to the ionic strength and cation and anion type. Swelling kinetics and water diffusion mechanism in distilled water were also discussed. Moreover, the product showed excellent water retention capability under the condition of high temperature or high pressure. The salt sensitivity, good water absorbency, and excellent water retention capability of the hydrogels give this intelligentized polymer wide potential applications.

Tongue diagnosis is a unique method in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This is the first investigation on the association between traditional tongue diagnosis and the tongue coating microbiome using next-generation sequencing. The study included 19 gastritis patients with a typical white-greasy or yellow-dense tongue coating corresponding to TCM Cold or Hot Syndrome respectively, as well as eight healthy volunteers. An Illumina paired-end, double-barcode 16S rRNA sequencing protocol was designed to profile the tongue-coating microbiome, from which approximately 3.7 million V6 tags for each sample were obtained. We identified 123 and 258 species-level OTUs that were enriched in patients with Cold/Hot Syndromes, respectively, representing "Cold Microbiota" and "Hot Microbiota". We further constructed the tongue microbiota-imbalanced networks associated with Cold/Hot Syndromes. The results reveal an important connection between the tongue-coating microbiome and traditional tongue diagnosis, and illustrate the potential of the tongue-coating microbiome as a novel holistic biomarker for characterizing patient subtypes.
