BACKGROUND: A healthy, well-balanced diet plays an essential role in respiratory diseases. Since micronutrient deficiency is relatively common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), micronutrient supplementation might have the beneficial health effects in those patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to demonstrate the impact of micronutrient supplementation on the lung function of patients with COPD. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from their corresponding creation until February 2024. Search terms included 'chronic obstructive pulmonary disease', 'COPD', 'micronutrients', 'dietary supplements', 'vitamins', 'minerals', and 'randomized controlled trials'. Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of micronutrient supplementation alone or complex on lung function in patients with COPD. RESULTS: A total of 43 RCTs fulfilled the inclusion criteria of this study. Meta-analysis revealed that vitamin D supplementation could significantly improve FEV1% (WMDdifferences between baseline and post-intervention (de): 6.39, 95% CI: 4.59, 8.18, p < 0.01; WMDpost-intervention indicators (af): 7.55, 95% CI: 5.86, 9.24, p < 0.01) and FEV1/FVC% (WMDde: 6.88, 95%CI: 2.11, 11.65, WMDaf: 7.64, 95% CI: 3.18, 12.10, p < 0.001), decrease the odds of acute exacerbations, and improve the level of T-cell subsets, including CD3+%, CD4+%, CD8+%, and CD4+/CD8+% (all p < 0.01). The effects of compound nutrients intervention were effective in improving FEV1% (WMDde: 8.38, 95%CI: 1.89, 14.87, WMDaf: 7.07, 95%CI: -0.34, 14.48) and FEV1/FVC% (WMDde: 7.58, 95% CI: 4.86, 10.29, WMDaf: 6.00, 95% CI: 3.19, 8.81). However, vitamin C and vitamin E supplementation alone had no significant effects on lung function (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Micronutrient supplementation, such as vitamin D alone and compound nutrients, has improved effect on the lung function of patients with COPD. Therefore, proper supplementation with micronutrients would be beneficial to stabilize the condition and restore ventilation function for COPD patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) in the treatment of severe chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (coGVHD). METHODS: A prospective cohort study. Seventeen patients with severe coGVHD were selected for inclusion in this study. All subjects were treated with IPL every fortnight together with conventional treatment, observation time points were pre-treatment (W0), 4 weeks post-treatment (W4), 8 weeks post-treatment (W8) and 12 weeks post-treatment (W12). Dry eye related examinations include Tear meniscus height (TMH), Non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT), Schirmer I test, Tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT), Ocular surface staining (OSS) and assessment of meibomian gland. Corneal epithelial cell morphology and inflammatory cell infiltration were analyzed by corneal confocal microscopy, while goblet cell density and squamous epithelial grade were assessed by conjunctival imprinted cytology. RESULTS: Patients did not experience any adverse reactions during the follow-up period. All subjects showed significant improvement in clinical symptoms and most signs after IPL treatment. The corneal confocal microscopy showed that the number of dendritic cells infiltrates in the corneal stroma was significantly reduced after IPL treatment (p < 0.001). Conjunctival blot cytology suggested an increase in the number of conjunctival goblet cells from 5.12 ± 2.71 cells/mm2 before treatment to 22.00 ± 4.58 cells/mm2 after treatment, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). An improvement in conjunctival epithelial cell morphology and a decrease in squamous epithelial grade was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: IPL treatment can effectively increase tear film stability in patients with severe coGVHD without significant side effects.

In this work, a novel fluorescent probe CBO was synthesized for detecting Fe2+ using the natural monoterpenketone camphor as the starting material. The probe CBO displayed turn-on fluorescence to Fe2+ accompanied by the solution change from colorless to green. As expected, there was an excellent linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity of probe CBO and the concentration of Fe2+ (0-20 µM), and the detection limit was as low as 1.56×10-8 M. In particular, CBO could selectively sense Fe2+ more than other analytes (Fe3+ included) through the N-oxide strategy, and quickly responded to Fe2+ (60 s) over a wide pH (4-14) range. Additionally, based on the rapid fluorescence response of CBO to Fe2+, a simple test strip-based detector was designed for boosting practical applicability. The probe CBO had been successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of Fe2+ in onion cells and living zebrafish. The probe CBO was a powerful tool of detecting Fe2+ level in organisms, which was of significance to understand the role of Fe2+ in Fe2+-related physical processes and diseases.

Global nitrogen (N) enrichment likely alters plant community composition and increases productivity, consequently affecting ecosystem stability. Meanwhile, the effects of N addition on plant community composition and productivity are often influenced by phosphorus (P) nutrition, as the effects of N and P addition and interactions between N and P on plant community structure and productivity are still not well understood. An in situ experiment with N and P addition was conducted in a temperate meadow in northeastern China from 2013 to 2016. The responses of plant community composition, structure, functional group cover, richness and productivity to N and P additions were examined. N addition significantly reduced species richness and diversity but increased aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) during the four-study-year period. P addition exerted no significant impact on species richness, diversity or ANPP but reduced cover of grasses and increased legume cover. Under N plus P addition, P addition alleviated the negative effects of N addition on community structure by increasing species richness and covers of legume and forbs. N and P additions significantly altered plant community structure and productivity in the functional groups. N addition significantly increased the cover of gramineous and reduced the cover of legume, P addition significantly increased legume cover. Our observations revealed that soil nutrient availability regulates plant community structure and ANPP in response to nutrient enrichment caused by anthropogenic activities in the temperate meadow. Our results highlight that the negative influence of N deposition on plant community composition might be alleviated by P input in the future.

Among diabetic cardiovascular complications cardiomyopathy is major event which if not well controlled culminates in cardiac failure. Wogonin from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi has shown specific anti-diabetes bioactivity. However, its effect on diabetic complications remains unclear. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the potential effects of wogonin on diabetic cardiomyopathy and to figure out its underlying mechanism. We found that wogonin administration suppressed hyperglycemia, improved cardiac function, and mitigated cardiac fibrosis in STZ-induced diabetic mice. Wogonin supplementation also attenuated diabetic-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and necrosis. In addition, wogonin treatment exhibited the properties of anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammation in STZ diabetic mice, evidenced by improved activities of anti-oxidases including SOD1/2 and CAT, decreased ROS and MDA production, suppressed expression of inflammation factors such as IL-1ß, IL-6, TNFα, and PAI-1, and inhibited NF-κB signaling. These results suggested that wogonin potentially mitigate hyperglycemia-related cardiomyocyte impairment through inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress.

AIM: Wogonin (5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone), a major bioactive compound of the flavonoid family, is commonly extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine Scutellaria baicalensis and possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and is assumed to have anti-diabetes function. Indeed, a current study has shown that it can possibly treat metabolic disorders such as those found in db/db mice. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of wogonin on osteopontin (OPN) expression in adipose tissue from type 1 diabetic mice and in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. METHODS: Type 1 diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) injection. 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were converted to 3T3-L1 adipocytes through treatment with insulin, dexamethasone, and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX). Western blot analysis and RT-PCR were performed to detect protein expression and mRNA levels, respectively. RESULTS: Wogonin treatment suppressed the increase in serum OPN levels and reduced OPN expression in adipose tissue from STZ-induced type 1 diabetic mice. Administration of wogonin enhanced PPARα expression and activity. Silencing of PPARα diminished the inhibitory effects of wogonin on OPN expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Furthermore, the levels of c-Fos and phosphorylated c-Jun were reduced in wogonin-treated adipose tissue and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In addition, wogonin treatment dramatically mitigated p38 MAPK phosphorylation. Pharmacological inhibition of p38 MAPK by its specific inhibitor SB203580 increased PPARα activity and decreased OPN expression. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that wogonin downregulated OPN expression in adipocytes through the inhibition of p38 MAPK and the sequential activation of the PPARα pathway. Given the adverse effects of high OPN levels on metabolism, our results provide evidence for the potential administration of wogonin as a treatment for diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic utility of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism, we tested whether HBO therapy provided rescue of the testes after torsion in rats. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control group, control plus HBO therapy, I/R group, and I/R plus HBO therapy. The I/R model was induced by torsion of the right testis. RESULTS: I/R in the testis resulted in disrupted seminiferous tubules, germ cell-specific apoptosis, followed by a marked reduction in testis weight and daily sperm production. HBO therapy preserved seminiferous tubules, suppressed apoptosis, and prevented testicular atrophy in I/R testes. HBO therapy abated oxidative stress in I/R testes, marked by reduced malondialdehyde formation, enhanced activities of superoxide dismutase and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and decreased activities of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase and xanthine oxidase. HBO therapy resulted in a reduction of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in I/R testes, a marker of neutrophil recruitment. HBO therapy suppressed inflammation in I/R testes, marked by reduced messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), and CD44. Furthermore, HBO therapy suppressed the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB), p38, and c-JUN-N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathways in I/R testes. In addition, HBO therapy reduced nitric oxide formation in I/R testes through suppression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase. CONCLUSION: HBO therapy in rats attenuated I/R-induced testicular injury, possibly through abating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation, and reducing nitric oxide formation.

AIM OF STUDY: Nowadays diabetic nephropathy (DN) has become a serious problem. Astragalus membranaceus is a traditional herb used for thousands of years in China and East Asia for kidney disease. In modern medicine, Astragalus shows significant renal protective effect in DN. We aimed to systematically review the randomized and semi-randomized control trials to ascertain its role in the treatment of DN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PUBMED, MEDLINE, Chinese journal full-test database (CJFD), Chinese biological and medical database were searched by computer and manual searching. Two assessors independently reviewed each trial. 25 studies comprising 21 RCTs and 4 CCTs were involved including 1804 patients (945 in treatment group and 859 in control group). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Astragalus injection had more therapeutic effect in DN patients including renal protective effect (BUN, SCr, CCr and urine protein) and systemic state improvement (serum albumin level) compared with the control group. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: This study investigates the effect of Astragalus in DN patients. It suggests that although of unknown bioactive ingredients and mechanism of renal protection, the role of Astragalus in the treatment of DN can be disclosed and of profound significance.
