Background: The effect of surgery on advanced prostate cancer (PC) is unclear and predictive model for postoperative survival is lacking yet. Methods: We investigate the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, to collect clinical features of advanced PC patients. According to clinical experience, age, race, grade, pathology, T, N, M, stage, size, regional nodes positive, regional nodes examined, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, history of malignancy, clinical Gleason score (composed of needle core biopsy or transurethral resection of the prostate specimens), pathological Gleason score (composed of prostatectomy specimens) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) are the potential predictive variables. All samples are divided into train cohort (70% of total, for model training) and test cohort (30% of total, for model validation) by random sampling. We then develop neural network to predict advanced PC patients' overall. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) is used to evaluate model's performance. Results: 6380 patients, diagnosed with advanced (stage III-IV) prostate cancer and receiving surgery, have been included. The model using all collected clinical features as predictors and based on neural network algorithm performs best, which scores 0.7058 AUC (95% CIs, 0.7021-0.7068) in train cohort and 0.6925 AUC (95% CIs, 0.6906-0.6956) in test cohort. We then package it into a Windows 64-bit software. Conclusion: Patients with advanced prostate cancer may benefit from surgery. In order to forecast their overall survival, we first build a clinical features-based prognostic model. This model is accuracy and may offer some reference on clinical decision making.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity has been identified as a significant risk factor for several chronic conditions, including diabetes, tumours and cardiovascular disease, and has been associated with increased mortality rates. Despite the well-established clinical practice of electroacupuncture (EA) as a potential treatment option for obesity, its efficacy remains questionable, primarily due to the paucity of empirical evidence supporting its therapeutic benefits. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The present study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of EA for weight loss in obese individuals with pre-diabetes, using a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial design. A total of 256 eligible patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: EA (comprising EA treatment with health education) or superficial acupuncture (SA) (comprising SA treatment with health education). The intervention will be administered three times per week for the initial 12 weeks, two times per week for the subsequent 8 weeks and one time per week for the final 4 weeks, with a 24-week follow-up period. The primary outcome measure will be the percentage of patients who achieve a reduction of 10% or more in their body weight at week 24. Secondary outcome measures will include changes in body weight and body mass index, blood test results, data collected by the body composition analyser, size of adipose tissue scanned by MRI of the abdomen and the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life, the 21-item Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-Revised and the Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait. The Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale will be employed to monitor every adverse reaction from baseline to follow-up. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This trial has received ethical clearance from the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine under the registration number 2021SHL-KY-74. All participants will provide their written informed consent prior to their enrolment. The findings of this investigation will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and scholarly conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05237089.

To explore the influencing factors of singletons with macrosomia, and to develop interventions for the prevention of macrosomia. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 26,379 pregnant women who established the Maternal and Child Health Record and gave birth from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 in a community health service center in Haidian district, Beijing. The study analyzed factors such as maternal age, ethnicity, education level, prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), parity, folic acid supplementation, gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hyper, hypothyroidism in pregnancy (including subhypothyroidism), hyperthyroidism in pregnancy, and infant gender. Univariate analysis was performed using the χ2 test, and multivariate analysis was performed using non-conditional multivariate logistic regression analysis. Out of 26,379 live births, 5.8% (1522/26,379) were macrosomia and 94.2% (24,857/26,379) were non-macrosomia. Univariate analysis revealed that maternal age, prepregnancy BMI, education level, parity, hypothyroidism during pregnancy, and infant gender were identified as influencing factors for macrosomia (P < .05). Multivariate analysis showed that maternal age ≥ 35 years, education level of high school or below, pre-pregnancy BMI, hypothyroidism, male infant, and parity were all influencing factors for macrosomia (P < .05). Prepregnancy overweight or obesity, male infants, multiparity, and low education level are risk factors for macrosomia. Multiple factors can contribute to macrosomia, and therefore, maternal health care should be strengthened, and early interventions should be taken for the above-mentioned factors in the local area.

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to screen drug molecules with potential therapeutic effects has revolutionized the drug discovery process, with significantly lower economic cost and time consumption than the traditional drug discovery pipeline. With the great power of AI, it is possible to rapidly search the vast chemical space for potential drug-target interactions (DTIs) between candidate drug molecules and disease protein targets. However, only a small proportion of molecules have labelled DTIs, consequently limiting the performance of AI-based drug screening. To solve this problem, a machine learning-based approach with great ability to generalize DTI prediction across molecules is desirable. Many existing machine learning approaches for DTI identification failed to exploit the full information with respect to the topological structures of candidate molecules. To develop a better approach for DTI prediction, we propose GraphormerDTI, which employs the powerful Graph Transformer neural network to model molecular structures. GraphormerDTI embeds molecular graphs into vector-format representations through iterative Transformer-based message passing, which encodes molecules' structural characteristics by node centrality encoding, node spatial encoding and edge encoding. With a strong structural inductive bias, the proposed GraphormerDTI approach can effectively infer informative representations for out-of-sample molecules and as such, it is capable of predicting DTIs across molecules with an exceptional performance. GraphormerDTI integrates the Graph Transformer neural network with a 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) to extract the drugs' and target proteins' representations and leverages an attention mechanism to model the interactions between them. To examine GraphormerDTI's performance for DTI prediction, we conduct experiments on three benchmark datasets, where GraphormerDTI achieves a superior performance than five state-of-the-art baselines for out-of-molecule DTI prediction, including GNN-CPI, GNN-PT, DeepEmbedding-DTI, MolTrans and HyperAttentionDTI, and is on a par with the best baseline for transductive DTI prediction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and safety of foot baths with Tangbi Waixi Decoction (TW) in treating patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: It is a multicenter double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Participants with DPN were recruited between November 18, 2016 and May 30, 2018 from 8 hospitals in China. All patients received basic treatments for glycemic management. Patients received foot baths with TW herbal granules either 66.9 g (intervention group) or 6.69 g (control group) for 30 min once a day for 2 weeks and followed by a 2-week rest, as a therapeutic course. If the Toronto Clinical Scoring System total score (TCSS-TS) ⩾6 points, the patients received a total of 3 therapeutic courses (for 12 weeks) and were followed up for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was change in TCSS-TS score at 12 and 24 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in bilateral motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of the median and common peroneal nerve. Safety was also assessed. RESULTS: Totally 632 patients were enrolled, and 317 and 315 were randomized to the intervention and control groups, respectively. After the 12-week intervention, patients in both groups showed significant declines in TCSSTS scores, and significant increases in MNCV and SNCV of the median and common peroneal nerves compared with pre-treatment (P<0.05). The reduction of TCSS-TS score at 12 weeks and the increase of SNCV of median nerve at 24 weeks in the control group were greater than those in the intervention group (P<0.05). The number of adverse events did not differ significantly between groups (P>0.05), and no serious adverse event was related with treatment. CONCLUSION: Treatment of TW foot baths was safe and significantly benefitted patients with DPN. A low dose of TW appeared to be more effective than a high dose. (Registry No. ChiCTR-IOR-16009331).

The principle of acupoint stimulation efficacy is based on traditional meridian theory. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of acupoints in treating diseases remain unclear in modern scientific understanding. In this study, we selected the ST36 acupoint for investigation and summarized all relevant literature from the PubMed database over the past 10 years. The results indicate that stimulation of ST36 single acupoints has therapeutic effects mainly in models of respiratory, neurological, digestive, endocrine and immune system diseases. And it can affect the inflammatory state, oxidative stress, respiratory mucus secretion, intestinal flora, immune cell function, neurotransmitter transmission, hormone secretion, the network of Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICC) and glucose metabolism of the organism in these pathological states. Among them, acupuncture at the ST36 single point has the most prominent function in regulating the inflammatory state, which can mainly affect the activation of MAPK signaling pathway and drive the "molecular-cellular" mode involving macrophages, T-lymphocytes, mast cells (MCs) and neuroglial cells as the core to trigger the molecular level changes of the acupuncture point locally or in the target organ tissues, thereby establishing a multi-system, multi-target, multi-level molecular regulating mechanism. This article provides a comprehensive summary and discussion of the molecular mechanisms and effects of acupuncture at the ST36 acupoint, laying the groundwork for future in-depth research on acupuncture point theory.

Selenomethionine (SeMet) as the main form of daily dietary selenium, occupies essential roles in providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which alleviates inflammatory liver damage. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most prevalent and abundant internal transcriptional modifications that regulate gene expression. To investigate the protective mechanism of SeMet on liver injury and the regulatory effect of m6A methylation modification, we established the model by supplementing dietary SeMet, and LPS as stimulus in laying hens. LMH cells were intervened with SeMet (0.075 µM) and/or LPS (60 µg/mL). Subsequently, histopathology and ultrastructure of liver were observed. Western Blot, qRT-PCR, colorimetry, MeRIP-qPCR, fluorescent probe staining and AO/EB were used to detect total m6A methylation level, m6A methylation level of Nrf2, ROS, inflammatory and necroptosis factors. Studies showed that SeMet suppressed LPS-induced upregulation of total m6A methylation levels and METTL3 expression. Interestingly, SeMet reduced the m6A methylation level of Nrf2, activated antioxidant pathways and alleviated oxidative stress. LMH cells were transfected with 50 µm siMETTL3. SeMet/SiMETTL3 reversed the LPS-induced reduction in Nrf2 mRNA stability, slowed down its degradation rate. Moreover, LPS induced oxidative stress, led to necroptosis and activated NF-κB to promote the expression of inflammatory factors. SeMet/SiMETTL3 alleviated LPS-induced necroptosis and inflammation. Altogether, SeMet enhanced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity by reducing METTL3-mediated m6A methylation levels of Nrf2, ultimately alleviating liver damage. Our findings provided new insights and therapeutic target for the practical application of dietary SeMet in the treatment and prevention of liver inflammation, and supplied a reference for comparative medicine.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia is a common monotherapy for sporotrichosis, but only in patients with special conditions, such as pregnancy and nursing. However, hyperthermia has not been used more widely for sporotrichosis in clinical practice. PATIENTS/METHODS: An HIV-positive adult male with lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix globosa that did not respond to conventional itraconazole therapy lasting >2 months received adjunctive therapy with local hyperthermia. To simulate the effects of heat exposure on the growth and morphology of Sporothrix spp. in vitro, S. globosa, S. schenckii and S. brasiliensis were exposed to intermittent heat (42°C) for 1 h a day for 7 or 28 days and observed under transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: Itraconazole combined with local hyperthermia significantly improved the lesions, and the patient was successfully cured of sporotrichosis, with no recurrence after 2 years of follow-up. Cultures of Sporothrix spp. treated with 7 days of daily heat exposure in vitro showed obvious decreases in colony diameters, but not numbers, compared with untreated cultures (p < .001). After 28 days of heat exposure in vitro, Sporothrix spp. were unable to thrive (p < .001), and ultrastructural alterations, including loose cell wall structure, incomplete cell membrane, disrupted vacuoles and fragmented nuclei, were noticeable. CONCLUSIONS: Our case findings and in vitro experiments on Sporothrix spp., together with a literature review of previous sporotrichosis cases, suggest that hyperthermia has a clinical role as a treatment adjunct. Large-scale clinical trials are required to examine the utility of hyperthermia in various forms of cutaneous sporotrichosis.

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) mild photothermal therapy with higher tissue penetration depth and less damage to healthy tissues is emerging as an attractive antitumor modality, but its therapeutic efficiency is dramatically suppressed by the resistance of heat shock proteins (HSPs). As a widely explored photothermal agent, the application of polydopamine (PDA) in the NIR-II region is hampered by low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, its PCE in the NIR-II region is improved by developing novel hollow cavity CaO2 @PDA nanocomposites through chelation-induced diffusion of inner core Ca2+ to the shell PDA to facilitate multiple reflections of laser in the cavity. Upon pH-responsive degradation of CaO2 , its structure is transformed into a stacked "nano-mesh" with excellent light absorption and an enlarged effective irradiation area. Overloading of Ca2+ ions not only induces downregulation of HSPs but also enhances interference of light on membrane potential, which further aggravate mitochondrial dysfunction and reduce the thermotolerance of tumor cells, promoting efficient mild hyperthermia of PDA in the NIR-II region.

In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of stevia extract on production performance, serum immune indexes, intestinal structure, and cecum microbial structure. We randomly divided eight hundred 46-wk-old Roman hens into 5 groups, with 8 replicates in each group and 20 chickens in each replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, whereas the 4 experimental groups were fed 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg stevia extracts. The study period was 24 wk. The addition of different concentrations of the stevia extract to the diet resulted in significant secondary changes in the egg production rate at 1 to 12 wk (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the addition of 50 and 100 mg/kg stevia extract to the diet significantly increased serum IgM and IgG levels in laying hens (P < 0.05) but linearly decreased serum IL-1ß levels (P < 0.05). Serum T-SOD activity linearly increased (P = 0.057); however, serum biochemical indexes showed no significant differences. Stevia extract tended to increase the ratio of the duodenal villi height to the depth of the crypt (P = 0.067), with no obvious lesions in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In addition, stevia extract increased the relative abundance of species at the phylum level, with the abundance of Bacteroides and Firmicutes exhibiting significant secondary changes (P < 0.05). The ACE and Chao1 indexes suggested that stevia extract addition significantly increased the alpha diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Furthermore, NMDS analysis based on operational taxonomic units revealed that stevia extract addition increased the beta diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Adding a certain amount of stevia extract to feed can improve the production performance, immune ability, and intestinal health of laying hens to some extent, and we recommend an effective level of 200mg/kg of stevia extract for laying hen diets.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cinobufacini injection, an aqueous extract of the toad, is a commonly used anti-tumor animal herbal medicine in clinical practice. It has the effects of detoxifying, reducing swelling, and relieving pain. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To investigate the effects of Cinobufacini injection on hepatocellular carcinoma progression by regulating lipid metabolism and macrophage polarization in the tumor microenvironment and to identify the potential molecular mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To establish the axillary transplantation tumor model of hepatocellular carcinoma Hepa1-6 in C57BL/6 mice, and to evaluate the inhibitory effect of Cinobufacini injection on hepatocellular carcinoma in vivo as well as drug delivery security. Combined metabolomics and transcriptomics analysis of the effect of Cinobufagin Injection on tumor microenvironment. An in vitro mouse co-culture model of peritoneal macrophages and Hepa1-6 cells was established to research the effects of Cinobufacini injection on macrophage polarization, hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth, migration, and changes in lipid metabolism. Cinobufacini injection inhibition of the AMPK/SREBP1/FASN signaling pathway regulating cholesterol metabolism and affecting macrophage polarization was examined using qRT-PCR, lentiviral transfection, immunofluorescence, and Western blot. RESULT: In vivo experiments demonstrated that Cinobufacini injection treatment significantly inhibited the growth of Hepa1-6 hepatomas, along with a reduction in cholesterol content and a decrease in the percentage of M2 macrophages in tumor tissue. In vitro, we found that Cinobufacini injection inhibits IL-4-induced M2 macrophage polarization, reduces the cholesterol content of Hepa1-6 cells in a co-culture system, and inhibits the promotion of hepatocellular carcinoma cells by M2 macrophages. In addition, successful overexpression of SREBP1 in Hepa1-6 cells showed more pronounced cellular activity whereas Cinobufacini injection inhibited this change and reduced intracellular lipid levels. CONCLUSION: Cinobufacini injection inhibits cholesterol synthesis within the tumor microenvironment via the AMPK/SERBP1/FASN signaling pathway, which in turn blocks the M2 polarization of macrophages, leading to the weakening of hepatocellular carcinoma growth and migration, and the promotion of its apoptosis. Our findings provide an important Introduction to understanding the molecular mechanism of Cinobufacini injection's anticancer activity and provide reliable theoretical and experimental support for its clinical application.

Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) are emerging natural enzyme mimics and have attracted much attention in the biomedical field. SAzymes with Metal─Nx sites designed on carbon matrixes are currently the mainstream in research. It is of great significance to further expand the types of SAzymes to enrich the nanozyme library. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) are a material in which single-atom metal sites are dispersed onto another active metal matrix, and currently, there is limited research on their enzyme-like catalytic performance. In this work, a biodegradable Pt1Pd SAA is fabricated via a simple galvanic replacement strategy, and for the first time reveals its intrinsic enzyme-like catalytic performance including catalase-, oxidase-, and peroxidase-like activities, as well as its photodynamic effect. Experimental characterizations demonstrate that the introduction of single-atom Pt sites contributes to enhancing the affinity of Pt1Pd single-atom alloy nanozyme (SAAzyme) toward substrates, thus exhibiting boosted catalytic efficiency. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that Pt1Pd SAAzyme exhibits a photo-controlled therapeutic effect, with a tumor inhibition rate of up to 100%. This work provides vital guidance for opening the research direction of SAAs in enzyme-like catalysis.

Currently, it is important but challenging to rationally design high-performance SAzymes and deeply reveal the interaction mechanism between SAzymes and substrate molecules. Herein, this work reports the controllable fabrication of a unique Cu-N1S2-centred SAzyme (Cu-N/S-C) via a chemical vapor deposition-based sulfur-engineering strategy. Benefiting from the optimized geometric and electronic structures of single-atom sites, Cu-N/S-C SAzyme shows boosted enzyme-like activity, especially in catalase-like activity, with a 13.8-fold increase in the affinity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) substrate and a 65.2-fold increase in the catalytic efficiency when compared to Cu-N-C SAzyme with Cu-N3 sites. Further theoretical studies reveal that the increased electron density around single-atom Cu is achieved through electron redistribution, and the efficient charge transfer between Cu-N/S-C and H2O2 is demonstrated to be more beneficial for the adsorption and activation of H2O2. The as-designed Cu-N/S-C SAzyme possesses an excellent antitumor effect through the synergy of catalytic therapy and oxygen-dependent phototherapy. This study provides a strategy for the rational design of SAzymes, and the proposed electron redistribution and charge transfer mechanism will help to understand the coordination environment effect of single-atom metal sites on H2O2-mediated enzyme-like catalytic processes.

Introduction: Chronic heart failure (CHF), as the final stage of the progression of many cardiovascular disorders, is one of the main causes of hospitalization and death in the elderly and has a substantial impact on patients' quality of life (QOL). Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been shown to considerably enhance QOL and prognosis. Given the barriers to center-based CR faced by most developing countries in the form of expensive instruments, the development of home-based CR is necessary. Tai Chi, as an instrument-free exercise, has been shown to be successful in treating elderly CHF individuals. Fu Yang, as one of the academic concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), believes that the fundamental pathogenesis of CHF is the gradual decline of Yang, and emphasizes the restoration of Yang physiological function in the treatment process. Therefore, we develope a home-based Tai Chi exercise rehabilitation program called Fu Yang Tai Chi (FYTC) for elderly CHF patients by combining the Fu Yang Theory of TCM with the CR theory. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, acceptability, and safety of the program. Methods and analysis: We suggest conducting a parallel randomized controlled clinical trial with open label. Eighty CHF elderly participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the FYTC rehabilitation program group or the moderate-intensity aerobic walking control group. Eligible participants will engage in either three sessions weekly of FYTC or walking exercise for 12 weeks. The primary outcome is the relative change in 6 min walk distance (6MWD). The secondary outcomes are the plasma levels of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), QOL, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDd), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and depression scale (SDS), exercise skills, and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring. Throughout the trial, adverse events will be recorded for safety evaluation. Researchers who are blinded to the treatment allocation will analyze the data. Ethics and dissemination: This research was authorized by the Guang'anmen Hospital Ethics Committee of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (2022-141-KY). Our findings will be shared online and in academic conferences as well as in peer-reviewed journals. Trial registration number: ChiCTR2200063511.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial susceptibility tests (ASTs) are pivotal tools for detecting and combating infections caused by multidrug-resistant rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) but are time-consuming and labor-intensive. DESIGN: We used a Mycobacterium abscessus-based RGM model to develop a rapid (24-h) AST from the beginning of the strain culture, the Clinical Antimicrobials Susceptibility Test Ramanometry for RGM (CAST-R-RGM). The ASTs obtained for 21 clarithromycin (CLA)-treated and 18 linezolid (LZD)-treated RGM isolates. RESULTS: CAST-R-RGM employs D2O-probed Raman microspectroscopy to monitor RGM metabolic activity, while also revealing bacterial antimicrobial drug resistance mechanisms. The results of clarithromycin (CLA)-treated and linezolid (LZD)-treated RGM isolates exhibited 90% and 83% categorical agreement, respectively, with conventional AST results of the same isolates. Furthermore, comparisons of time- and concentration-dependent Raman results between CLA- and LZD-treated RGM strains revealed distinct metabolic profiles after 48-h and 72-h drug treatments, despite similar profiles obtained for both drugs after 24-h treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Ultimately, the rapid, accurate, and low-cost CAST-R-RGM assay offers advantages over conventional culture-based ASTs that warrant its use as a tool for improving patient treatment outcomes and revealing bacterial drug resistance mechanisms.

Gastrointestinal dysfunction is manifested as digestive symptoms. Clinically, Zusanli (ST36) is crucial in the acupoint prescriptions of acupuncture no matter which type of the disease is differentiated in traditional Chinese medicine, but the underlying mechanism remains to be explored. Aiming to summarize the current status of the researches in terms of ameliorating gastrointestinal mucosal damage and regulating gastrointestinal motility disorders, we systematically reviewed the basic researches on the intervention with electroacupuncture (EA) at "ST36" in treatment of the diseases related to gastrointestinal dysfunction in the past 5 years, after searching the articles from Chinese and English databases. The results suggest that EA at ST36 may regulate the local gastrointestinal inflammation, oxidative stress and immune microenvironment to relieve gastrointestinal mucosal damage and adjust gastrointestinal motility disorders by means of modulating the central and peripheral nerve signaling as well as the function of mast cells and Cajal interstitial cells.

Human beings have always pursued a prolonged lifespan, while the aging of the nervous system is associated with a large variety of diseases. Pathological aging of the nervous system results in a series of neurodegenerative diseases and can cause disability and death in the elderly. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the prevention and treatment of nervous system aging. Chinese herbal medicines have a long history, featuring rich and safe ingredients, and have great potential for the development of anti-aging treatment. We searched the publications on PubMed with key words "anti-aging of the nervous system" and "Chinese herbal medicine" in recent 10 years, and found sixteen Chinese herbal medicines. Then by comparing their popularity of use as well as active components based on the research articles, five common Chinese herbal medicines namely Ginseng Radix, Lycii Fructus, Astragali Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma and Ginkgo Folium, were confirmed to be the most related to anti-nervous system aging and neural degenerative diseases. At the same time, the active ingredients, research models, action mechanisms and curative effects of these five common Chinese herbal medicines were reviewed. From the five common Chinese herbal medicines reviewed in this paper, many encouraging effects of Chinese herbal medicines on treating nervous system aging and related diseases were revealed and more potent herbs would be explored with the help of the proposed possible mechanisms.

Cancer treatment remains a significant challenge for the medical community, and improved therapies are necessary to treat cancer and its associated complications. Current anticancer therapies often have significant side effects, underscoring the need for new treatment options. Moxibustion is a representative external therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine. This review examines clinical studies demonstrating moxibustion's ability to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and control tumor progression. Moxibustion can prevent and treat various complications of cancer, including cancer-related or therapy-induced gastrointestinal symptoms, myelosuppression, fatigue, pain, and postoperative lymphedema. has also been shown to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients. However, very few studies have investigated the underlying mechanisms for these effects, a topic that requires systematic elucidation. Evidence has shown that moxibustion alone or combined with chemotherapy can improve survival and inhibit tumor growth in cancer-bearing animal models. The anticancer effect of moxibustion is associated with alleviating the tumor immunosuppressive and vascular microenvironments. Additionally, the therapeutic effects of moxibustion may originate from the heat and radiation produced during the combustion process on acupoints or lesions. This evidence provides a scientific basis for the clinical application of moxibustion in anticancer treatment and reducing the side effects of cancer therapies and helps promote the precise application of moxibustion in cancer treatment.

In order to distinguish different grades of Jiuqu hongmei tea (black tea), four different grades of Jiuqu hongmei tea were used as materials in this study: Super Grade (SuG), First Grade (FG), Second Grade (SG), and Third Grade (TG). HS-SPME-GC-MS combined with electronic nose (E-nose) and electronic tongue (E-tongue) technology was used to detect and analyze tea samples. The results showed that 162 volatile substances were identified, mainly alcohols, followed by hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones and esters. Twenty-nine volatile compounds were found in all grades of tea samples. The results of heat map analysis showed that the relative contents of five volatile compounds in different grades of Jiuqu hongmei tea were positively correlated with the grades of Jiuqu hongmei tea. By orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), 35 different compounds of SuG and FG, 30 different compounds of SG and TG, 34 different compounds of FG and SG were found. Overall, the results indicated that there were significant differences in volatile compounds among different grades of Jiuqu hongmei tea, and the use of HS-SPME-GC-MS combined with E-nose and E-tongue could provide a scientific reference method as an effective tool for detecting flavor characteristics of other types of black tea grades.

Background: We conducted this randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion at Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupoint for treatment of negative mood and sleep quality in healthcare workers during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Methods: A total of 180 participants were divided in a 1:1 ratio into two groups, the treatment group (for moxibustion) and the control group (for no treatment). The treatment group had a 30-minute moxibustion therapy once a day for two weeks, followed by a two-week follow-up. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) was used to assess the degree of the participants' anxiety, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was utilized to examine their depressed condition. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) was used to measure the level of burnout among healthcare workers. To determine the severity of insomnia, the Sleep Dysfunction Rating Scale (SDRS) was utilized. At baseline, week 2, and week 4, all scales were evaluated. Results: Compared to the control group, The treatment group improved more significantly in the HAMA at week 2 (MD = -19.01, 95% CI: -21.89 to -16.14; P<0.001) and at week 4 follow-up visits (MD = -8.96, 95% CI: -11.19 to -6.73; P<0.001). A subgroup study of HAMA scores revealed that position and education had significant impact on treatment effectiveness. During the 2-week intervention period, the treatment group showed more significant improvements in depressive symptoms measured by PHQ-9 (13.00±2.41 vs. 15.60±3.65; P<0.001), work burnout symptoms measured by MBI-GS (MD = -11.88, 95% CI, -15.73 to -8.03; P<0.001), and insomnia symptoms measured by SDRS (MD = -2.45, 95% CI, -4.24 to -0.66; P<0.01). There were no significant adverse effects reported. Conclusion: Moxibustion at SP6 may be an effective treatment to improve anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and quality of life for healthcare workers during COVID-19.
