Coccidiosis is an intestinal protozoan disease of sheep, that causes substantial economic losses in the industry due to its intestinal protozoan origins. Many anti-protozoan drugs including ionophores, triazines, and sulfonamides have been widely used to treat sheep coccidiosis. Still, anticoccidial resistance and drug residues in edible tissues have prompted an urgent search for alternatives. In this study, the anti-coccidial effectiveness of the Radix dichroae extract was compared to that of the conventional anti-coccidial drug diclazuril. Here, eighteen 45-day-old lambs naturally-infected with Eimeria spp. were randomly allocated in three groups: control group, Radix dichroae extract group and diclazuril group. The results showed that the body weight gain (BWG) during the treatment and withdrawal periods was considerably improved in the coccidiosis-infected sheep treated with Radix dichroae extract and diclazuril compared to the control group, respectively. Additionally, the Radix dichroae extract and diclazuril had fewer oocysts per gram (OPG) than the control group, showing similar anti-coccidial effects on days 14, 21, 28, 35 and 78, respectively. Furthermore, Radix dichroae extract and diclazuril treatment altered the structure and composition of gut microbiota, promoting the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, Alistipes, and Bifidobacterium, while decreasing the abundance of Bacteroidota, Marinilaceae, Helicobacteraceae, and Prevotella. Moreover, Spearman's correlation analysis further revealed a correlation between the OPG and BWG and gut microorganisms. Collectively, the results indicated that Radix dichroae extract had similar anti-coccidial effects as diclazuril, and could regulate gut microbiota balance in growing lambs.

Phototherapy of deep tumors still suffers from many obstacles, such as limited near-infrared (NIR) tissue penetration depth and low accumulation efficiency within the target sites. Herein, stimuli-sensitive tumor-targeted photodynamic nanoparticles (STPNs) with persistent luminescence for the treatment of deep tumors are reported. Purpurin 18 (Pu18), a porphyrin derivative, is utilized as a photosensitizer to produce persistent luminescence in STPNs, while lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) exhibit bioimaging properties and possess high photostability that can enhance photosensitizer efficacy. STPNs are initially stimulated by NIR irradiation before intravenous administration and accumulate at the tumor site to enter the cells through the HER2 receptor. Due to Pu18 afterglow luminescence properties, STPNs can continuously generate ROS to inhibit NFκB nuclear translocation, leading to tumor cell apoptosis. Moreover, STPNs can be used for diagnostic purposes through MRI and intraoperative NIR navigation. STPNs exceptional antitumor properties combined the advantages of UCNPs and persistent luminescence, representing a promising phototherapeutic strategy for deep tumors.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dalbergia pinnata, as a natural and ethnic medicine in China, has been used for burns and wounds with a long history, which has the effect of invigorating blood and astringent sores. However, there were no reports on the advantage activity of burns. AIM OF STUDY: The purpose of this study was to screen out the best active extract part of Dalbergia pinnata and investigate its therapeutic effect on wound healing and scar resolution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rat burn model was established and the healing effects of extracts from Dalbergia pinnata on burn wounds were evaluated by the percentage of wound contraction and period of epithelialization. Histological observation, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and ELISA were used for the examination of inflammatory factors, TGF-ß1, neovascularization and collagen fibers through the period of epithelialization. In addition, the effect of the optimal extraction site on fibroblast cells was evaluated by cell proliferation and cell migration assays. The extracts of Dalbergia pinnata were analyzed by UPLC-Q/TOF-MS or GC-MS technique. RESULTS: Compared to the model group, there were better wound healing, suppressed inflammatory factors, more neovascularization as well as newly formed collagen in the ethyl acetate extract (EAE) and petroleum ether extract (PEE) treatment groups. The ratio of Collagen I and Collagen III was lower in the EAE and PEE treatment groups, suggesting a potential for reduced scarring. Furthermore, EAE and PEE could repair wounds by up-regulating TGF-ß1 in the early stage of wound repair and down-regulating TGF-ß1 in the late stage. In vitro studies showed that both EAE and PEE were able to promote NIH/3T3 cells proliferation and migration compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, EAE and PEE were found to significantly accelerate wound repair and might have an inhibitory effect on the generation of scars. It was also hypothesized that the mechanism might be related to the regulation of TGF-ß1 secretion. This study provided an experimental basis for the development of topical drugs for the treatment of burns with Dalbergia pinnata.

This study was designed to determine the inhibitory effect of astragaloside Ⅳ(AS-Ⅳ), a principal bioactive component extracted from the Chinese medicinal Astragali Radix, on the inflammatory response of vascular endothelial cells induced by angiotensin Ⅱ(Ang Ⅱ), the most major pathogenic factor for cardiovascular diseases, and to clarify the role of calcium(Ca~(2+))/phosphatidylinosi-tol-3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt)/endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS)/nitric oxide(NO) pathway in the process. To be specific, human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs) were cultured in the presence of AS-Ⅳ with or without the specific inhibitor of NO synthase(NG-monomethyl-L-arginine, L-NMMA), inhibitor of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway(LY294002), or Ca~(2+)-chelating agent(ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid, EGTA) prior to Ang Ⅱ stimulation. The inhibitory effect of AS-Ⅳ on Ang Ⅱ-induced inflammatory response and the involved mechanism was determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), cell-based ELISA assay, Western blot, and monocyte adhesion assay which determined the fluorescently labeled human monocytic cell line(THP-1) adhered to Ang Ⅱ-stimulated endothelial cells. AS-Ⅳ increased the production of NO by HUVECs in a dose-and time-dependent manner(P<0.05) and raised the level of phosphorylated eNOS(P<0.05). The above AS-Ⅳ-induced changes were abolished by pretreatment with L-NMMA, LY294002, or EGTA. Compared with the control group, Ang Ⅱ obviously enhanced the production and release of cytokines(tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6), chemokines(monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) and adhesion molecules(intercellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1), and the number of monocytes adhered to HUVECs(P<0.05), which were accompanied by the enhanced levels of phosphorylated inhibitor of nuclear factor-κBα protein and activities of nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)(P<0.05). This study also demonstrated that Ang Ⅱ-induced inflammatory response was inhibited by pretreatment with AS-Ⅳ(P<0.05). In addition, the inhibitory effect of AS-Ⅳ was abrogated by pretreatment with L-NMMA, LY294002, or EGTA(P<0.05). This study provides a direct link between AS-Ⅳ and Ca~(2+)/PI3K/Akt/eNOS/NO pathway in AS-Ⅳ-mediated anti-inflammatory actions in endothelial cells exposed to Ang Ⅱ. The results indicate that AS-Ⅳ attenuates endothelial cell-mediated inflammatory response induced by Ang Ⅱ via the activation of Ca~(2+)/PI3K/Akt/eNOS/NO signaling pathway.

Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Acari: Macronyssidae) is a common ectoparasite that feeds on the blood of poultry. Following infestation, this mite will cause symptoms such as weight loss, anemia, and decreased egg production. To explore green and safe drugs for the prevention and treatment of O. sylviarum, this study evaluated the effects of ethanol extracts of seven Chinese medicinal herbs-Leonurus artemisia (motherwort), Illicium verum (star anise), Cinnamomum cassia (cinnamon), Hibiscus syriacus, Artemisia argyi (Chinese mugwort), Taraxacum sp. (dandelion), and Syzygium aromaticum (clove)-on O. sylviarum at different life stages. The results showed that different methods of administration affected the acaricidal efficacy of these plant extracts on O. sylviarum. After 6 h of administration with the fumigation method, the acaricidal efficacy of S. aromaticum on adults, nymphs and larvae of O. sylviarum reached 100%. 30 min after administration with the infiltration method, S. aromaticum, H. syriacus and L. artemisia showed acaricidal effects on adults and nymphs of O. sylviarum reaching 100%. In another experiment evaluating the inhibition of egg hatching of O. sylviarum with alcohol extracts of these seven herbs, at 48 h after treatment, A. argyi and C. cassia showed inhibition rates of 19.4%. The results of this study indicate that S. aromaticum induced mortality at all stages of O. sylviarum, whereas A. argyi was found to be the most effective at inhibiting the mite's egg hatching among the seven herbs. These herbs can therefore be used as potential substitutes for chemical pesticides to prevent and control O. sylviarum. These results provide practical knowledge for the control of O. sylviarum.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As a typical heat-clearing prescription, Shaoyao decoction (SYD) has a robust function of clearing viscera heat for the treatment of several intestinal discomfort symptoms. Clinical evidence indicated that it had the potential to cure radiation enteritis. However, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study was designed to probe the protective effects and the involved mechanisms of SYD on X-ray radiation-induced enteritis of C57BL/6 mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: X-ray irradiation were used to establish the radiation enteritis model. Forty-eight male C57BL/6 mice (20 ± 2 g) were randomly divided into six groups: the control group, model group, dexamethasone group (DEX, 0.12 mg/kg) and SYD groups (0.12, 0.24 and 0.36 g/mL), respectively. All mice (except the control group) were intragastrically administrated for a continuous 7 days. H&E and Masson staining were employed to evaluate the morphological and collagen fibers changes of the colon. ELISA was performed to assess the levels of MDA, SOD, COX, LPS, IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α in serum. Moreover, TUNEL fluorescence, western blot and qRT-PCR were used to detect the levels of apoptosis-related proteins and genes of Dclk-1, ATM, MRE-11, Bcl-2, Bax, Caspase-3, and Cyto-c. Furthermore, immunofluorescent staining was applied to detect the protein levels of p53 and Claudin-1 in colon. RESULTS: Treatment with SYD decreased the exfoliated and necrotic epithelial cells and prevent the proliferate from damaged fibrous tissue in the crypt layer of mucos. The levels of serum peroxidation and pro-inflammatory cytokines (MDA, COX, LPS, IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α) were obviously inhibited, while SOD sharply increased in serum after administration. Moreover, SYD can significantly ameliorate the apoptosis of colon cells, evidenced by the reduced positive expression of TUNEL staining. Meanwhile, the results of qRT-PCR and western blot demonstrated that SYD can dramatically stimulate the expression of genes and proteins Dclk-1, ATM and MRE-11, thus promoting the expression of mitochondrial pro-apoptotic proteins Bax, Caspase-3 and Cyto-c, while increasing the level of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Furthermore, immunofluorescence revealed that SYD can notably decreased the protein level of p53 while reverse the reduction of Claudin-1. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that radiation enteritis in C57BL/6 mice can be ameliorated by treatment with SYD. The potential protection mechanisms may be involved in ameliorating tissue fibrosis by decreasing inflammatory and apoptotic events.

Asthma occurs accompanied by the ferroptosis in bronchial epithelial cells, during which Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a key role. However, the associations between IL-6, ferroptosis and asthma have not been reported. Bronchial epithelial cells BEAS-2B cells were induced by different concentrations of IL-6 and cell viability was detected by MTT assay. The TBARS production rate was detected by corresponding kit. The expression of oxidative stress-related indexes was detected by ELISA. The Iron Assay Kits detected total iron levels and ferrous ion (Fe2+) levels. Labile iron pool assay was used to detect the cell unstable iron pool. The expression of ferroptosis-related proteins was detected by Western blot. To further examine the mechanism of action, ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin 1 (Fer-1), antioxidant NAC, and the iron supplement Fe were added. We found that IL-6 decreased the activity, promoted lipid peroxidation, disrupted iron homeostasis of BEAS-2B cells, and induced iron death in bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. However, pretreatment with Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) and antioxidant NAC partially reversed the effect of IL-6 on lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in BEAS-2B cells, while Fe augmented the effect. Overall, IL-6 promotes ferroptosis in bronchial epithelial cells by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent lipid peroxidation and disrupting iron homeostasis.

This article explores the effects and mechanisms of magnolol on the proliferation of gastric cancer cells as well as the apoptosis. First, 0 (control group), 20, 40, and 80 /x mol/L magnolol were observed on SGC-7901 cells for 24, 48, and 72 h. We use MTT method to measure the cell viability, and apoptosis and cells were detected by flow cytometry. Cell proliferation inhibition rate, apoptosis and cell cycle experiments showed that P-value < 0.05 means the difference is statistically significant. And the results which compare the control group, the 20, 40, and 80 /x mol/L show that honokiol had lower cell viability (P < 0.01), increased apoptotic rate (P < 0.01), and cell cycle stay in the G1 phase (P < 0.01), so we found that honokiol may suppress the proliferation of SGC-7901 cells and stimulate apoptosis by regulating cyclin and apoptosis-related proteins. With the development of nanomaterials synthesis technology and application in biomedicine, gold magnetic composite nanomaterials have unique properties, so they have been widely concerned in many applications. We combine gold and magnetic nanomaterials through other nanostructures to achieve the integration of diagnosis and treatment of tumors. We have synthesized two kinds of gold magnetic nanocomposites, GNR-PPy-FA nanocomposites. With the role of chemotherapy and heat and light therapy, GNR-PPy-FA nanocomposites have high light-to-heat conversion efficiency. Cell experiments verify the effect of chemotherapy and photothermal treatment of composite nanomaterials. After incubation with gold magnetic composite nanomaterials, the cell survival rate of tumor cells decreased to about 15%. In addition, both types of gold magnetic nanocomposites have the ability to dually target cancer cells, and the modification of folic acid and cancer cell membranes makes the material more biocompatible.

The National Bureau of Statistics of China shows that the population over 65 years old in China exceeds 166 million accounting for 11.93% of the total population by the end of 2018. The importance and severity of taking care of the elderly are becoming increasingly prominent. High-quality and meticulous care for the daily life of the elderly needs helpful and advanced sciences and technologies. Smart geriatric nursing is a must. Basing on the professional knowledge of geriatric nursing, this paper proposes a framework of smart geriatric nursing which consists of three aspects of smart nursing: smart geriatric nursing in physical health using biosensor and advanced devices, smart geriatric nursing in mental health based on user profile, and smart geriatric nursing for daily life based on big data in health. The deployment of the proposed method relies on the technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT), user profile system, big data, and many other advanced information technologies. The framework of methods can provide a useful reference for the systematic technical scheme of smart geriatric nursing in an aging society.

Egg oil from Portunus trituberculatus (Pt-egg oil) can overcome insulin resistance resulting from abundant bioactive lipids. However, its effects on obesity and gut microbiota were unclear. Here, we evaluated whether Pt-egg oil could improve obesity and gut microbiota or not in high-fat diet feeding mice. Results exhibited that Pt-egg oil markedly reduced body weight and adipose weight gain, improved lipid accumulation and circulatory cytokines, inhibited epididymal adipose cell size. Moreover, Pt-egg oil modified gut microbiota, involving decreases in the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and increase in Verrucomicrobia phylum. Pt-egg oil reduced serum and fecal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels and down-regulated Toll-like receptor 4 pathway in both epididymal adipose and liver tissues. Meanwhile, Pt-egg oil increased short chain fatty acids and up-regulated of G-protein-coupled receptors in both epididymal adipose and liver tissues. These suggest that Pt-egg oil could be alternative food supplement for the prophylactic effects on anti-obesity and improvement in human gut health.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapeutic treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has always been plagued by nonspecific and side effects. Plant extracts have potential anticancer capabilities with low cytotoxicity and few side effects, but their detailed mechanisms are still unclear, thus limiting their clinical applications. METHODS: In this study, five plant extracts were chosen, their inhibition on HCC cell viability was compared by CCK-8 assay and sanguinarine (SAN) was selected. Then, wound healing assay, transwell assay, and apoptosis assay were carried out in Hep3B cells. Bioinformatics methods were performed and IGFBP-3 was predicted the targets of SAN in HCC. The mechanism of SAN regulating IGFBP-3 was explored using qRT-PCR, Western blotting, cell viability assay and apoptosis assay. Meanwhile, knockdown of IGFBP-3 were used by small interfering RNA (siRNA). RESULTS: In five plant extracts, SAN inhibited the proliferation of HCC cell lines most considerably. In addition, apoptosis was promoted, and invasion and migration were inhibited in the Hep3B cell line by treatment with SAN at 2 µM. Bioinformatics indicated that SAN could affect HCC apoptosis through the TP53/IGFBP-3 pathway, and further verification experiments showed that SAN upregulated the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in the Hep3B cell line; SAN also inhibited the expression of Bcl-2 and promoted the expression of BAX and caspase-3. After using siRNA to inhibit the expression of IGFBP-3, the effect of SAN was blocked. CONCLUSION: Our study further reveals a novel mechanism that IGFBP-3 is an important target of SAN, by upregulating expression of IGFBP-3, SAN promotes apoptosis in HCC.

The further development of fishery resources is a hotspot in the development of the fishery industry. However, how to develop aquatic animal resources deeply is a key point to be solved in the fishery industry. Over the past decades, numerous aquatic animals have gained great attention in the development and utilization of their bioactive molecules which are of therapeutic applications as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Recent research revealed that aquatic animals are composed of many vital moieties, such as polysaccharides and proteins, which provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. In particular, aquatic animal polysaccharides are gaining worldwide popularity owing to their high content, ease of extraction, specific structure, few side effects, prominent therapeutic potential and incorporation in functional foods and dietary supplements. Thus, tremendous research on the isolation, identification and bioactivities of polysaccharides has been carried out. This review presents comprehensive viewpoints on extraction, separation, purification, structural characterization and bioactivity of various polysaccharides from aquatic animals, such as sea cucumber, abalone, oyster and mussels. In addition, this review profiled a brief knowledge on both current challenges and future scope in aquatic animal polysaccharides field. The review will be a direction of deep processing in fishery resources, which is a hotspot, but technical bottleneck. Furthermore, the review could be served as a useful reference material for further investigation, production and application of polysaccharides from aquatic animals in functional foods and therapeutic agents.

This study evaluated the effects of long-chain bases from sea cucumber (SC-LCBs) on modulation of the gut microbiota and inhibition of obesity in high fat diet-fed mice. Results showed that SC-LCBs exerted significant antiobese effects, which were associated with the inhibition of hyperglycemia and lipid accumulation. SC-LCBs also regulated serum adipocytokines toward to normal levels. SC-LCBs caused significant decreases in Firmicutes, Actinobacteria phylum, and obesity-related bacteria (Desulfovibro, Bifidobacterium, Romboutsia etc. genus). SC-LCBs also elevated Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia phylum, and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing bacteria (Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group etc. genus). Moreover, serum and fecal lipoplysaccharide (LPS) concentrations and its dependent toll-line receptor 4 pathway were inhibited by SC-LCBs treatment. SC-LCBs caused increases in fecal SCFAs and their mediated G-protein-coupled receptors proteins. These suggest that SC-LCBs alleviate obesity by altering gut microbiota. Thus, it sought to indicate that SC-LCBs can be developed as food supplement for the obesity control and the human gut health.

For the first time, a quantitative photothermal-sensing immunochromatographic sensor (PT-ICS) is described using Au nanoparticle-enhanced two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP-Au) as signal component for the photothermal-sensing antibody probe. BP-Au has good photothermal properties at 808 nm, and the photothermal conversion efficiency of the BP-Au nanosheet increased by 12.9% over the black phosphorus nanosheet alone. In addition, the antibody was more easily coupled to this nanosheet due to the good physical adsorption capacity of Au nanoparticles. We used this PT-ICS to detect veterinary antibiotics enrofloxacin (ENR), the photothermal-sensing antibody probe was competitive captured by ENR target and antigen coating on test (T) lines of the sensor. This process was exothermic under an 808 nm laser, and the thermal energy decreased as the ENR in the sample increased. This thermal energy was recorded by an infrared thermal imager or an infrared thermometer, and the concentration of the ENR residues in animal-derived foods was obtained by analyzing the temperature changes in T-lines. Under optimal conditions, the PT-ICS exhibited sensitive and specific detection of ENR from 0.03 µg/L to 10 µg/L with detection limits of 0.023 µg/L. The results agreed well with a commercial enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay kit. This PT-ICS provided a promising strategy for the detection of ENR residues in animal-derived foods and expected to be used for the detection of other highly sensitive biomacromolecules.

Background: Experimental study to evaluate feasibility of continuous intraoperative neural monitoring (C-IONM) in transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA). Methods: Duroc-Landrace pigs were orally intubated with electromyogram endotracheal tube. Automatic periodic stimulation (APS) electrode was allocated in the operative field through the 5-mm ports. APS was then repose on vagal nerve (VN) with different approaches: (1) median, that is, between sternothyroid and thyroid gland; and (2) lateral, that is, between sternocleidomastoid and sternothyroid. VN was stimulated proximally and distally to the APS location to verify whether the dissection and/or placement determined VN injury. Video presentation is offered. Results: Assembled APS accessory was feasible in large-brained animals. The two basic options for VN approaches were tested. Baseline obtained had amplitude values >1000 µV, bilaterally. Conclusions: C-IONM was feasible in TOETVA in porcine models, but simplification of electrode design and application is needed.

PURPOSE: Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most predominant malignancies with high fatality rate and its incidence is rising at an alarming rate because of its resistance to radio- and chemotherapy. Indirubin is the major active anti-tumor ingredient of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of indirubin on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis of tumor-derived endothelial cells (Td-EC). METHODS: Td-EC were derived from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) by treating HUVEC with the conditioned medium of human liver cancer cell line HepG2. Cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis were assessed by MTT, wound healing, in vitro cell invasion, and in vitro tube formation assay. RESULTS: Td-EC were successfully obtained from HUVEC cultured with 50% culture supernatant from serum-starved HepG2 cells. Indirubin significantly inhibited Td-EC proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Indirubin also inhibited Td-EC migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. However, indirubin's effects were weaker on HUVEC than Td-EC. CONCLUSION: Indirubin significantly inhibited Td-EC proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis.

Sebocyte differentiation is a continuous process, but its potential molecular mechanism remains unclear. We aimed to establish a novel sebocyte differentiation model using human primary sebocytes and to identify the expression profiles of differentiation-associated proteins. Primary human sebocytes were cultured on Sebomed medium supplemented with 2% serum for 7 days. Flow cytometry showed that S phase cells were decreased time-dependently, while G1 and subG1 (apoptosis) phase cells increased under serum starvation. Transmission electron microscopy and Oil Red O staining revealed a gradual increase of intracellular lipid accumulation. Expression of proliferation marker was diminished, while expression of differentiation, apoptosis, and lipogenic markers elevated gradually during 7-day culture. iTRAQ analysis identified 3582 expressed proteins in this differentiation model. Compared with day 0, number of differentially expressed proteins was 132, 54, 321, and 96 at days 1, 3, 5, and 7, respectively. Two overexpressed proteins (S100 calcium binding protein P and ferredoxin reductase) and 2 downexpressed proteins (adenosine deaminase and keratin 10) were further confirmed by Western blot and immunohistochemistry.

Polysaccharide, as a promising candidate to meet the medication requirement of ulcerative colitis (UC), is increasingly attracting extensive interest. Dendrobium officinale has been widely used to treat gastrointestinal sickness in the clinical treatment of Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, it remains largely unknown whether polysaccharides (DOPS) from Dendrobium officinale can treat UC. The purpose of this paper is to confirm therapeutic action of DOPS to UC and explored its underlying mechanisms. We noted that DOPS could dramatically improve clinical signs and symptoms, decrease mortality, alleviate colonic pathological damage, and reestablish the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in DSS-induced acute UC mice. Moreover, DOPS treatment could also markedly suppress the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and ß-arrestin1 in vivo and in vitro. This study showed that DOPS possesses appreciable therapeutic effect to treat experimental acute UC mice. Its mechanism could be related to inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome and ß-arrestin1 signaling pathways.

A three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon is synthesized via a facile chemical activation route with garlic skin as the precursor and KOH as the activating agent. The as-obtained carbon presents a high specific surface area of 2818 m2 g-1 and a hierarchical porous architecture containing macroporous frameworks, mesopores (2-4 nm), and micropores (0.6-1.0 nm). As the electrode material for a supercapacitor, due to its unique interconnected porous structure, this garlic skin-derived carbon exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability. At a current density of 0.5 A g-1, the capacitance is up to 427 F g-1 (162 F cm-3). Even at a high current density of 50 A g-1, the capacitance can be maintained to a high value of 315 F g-1 (120 F cm-3). After charging-discharging at a current density of 4.5 A g-1 for 5000 cycles, the capacitance retention is as high as 94%. The results suggest that this garlic skin-derived 3D hierarchical porous carbon is a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.
