Background: Depression is a severe mental disorder that poses a significant threat to both the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals. Currently, there are various methods for treating depression, including traditional Chinese herbal formulations like Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS), which have shown effective antidepressant effects in both clinical and animal research. Objective: This review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of evidence related to CSS, considering both preclinical and clinical studies, to uncover its potential multi-level, multi-pathway, and multi-target mechanisms for treating depression and identify its active ingredients. Methods: A thorough search was conducted in electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Wanfang, using keywords such as "Chaihu Shugan" and "depression" to retrieve relevant literature on CSS and its active ingredients. The review process adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Results: This review consolidates the mechanisms underlying antidepressant effects of CSS and its active ingredients. It emphasizes its involvement in the regulation of monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems, synaptic plasticity, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, among other aspects. Conclusion: CSS exerts a pivotal role in treating depression through various pathways, including the monoaminergic neurotransmitter system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, synaptic plasticity, inflammation, brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels, and the brain-gut axis. This review facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the current state of CSS research, fostering an in-depth exploration of the etiological mechanisms of depression and the potential discovery of novel antidepressant drugs.

BACKGROUND: Fluoxetine is often used as a well-known first-line antidepressant. However, it is accompanied with hepatogenic injury as its main organ toxicity, thereby limiting its application despite its superior efficacy. Fluoxetine is commonly traditionally used combined with some Chinese antidepressant prescriptions containing Rehmannia glutinosa (Dihuang) for depression therapy and hepatoprotection. Our previous experiments showed that co-Dihuang can alleviate fluoxetine-induced liver injury while efficiencies, and catalpol may be the key ingredient to characterize the toxicity-reducing and synergistic effects. However, whether co-catalpol can alleviate fluoxetine-induced liver injury and its toxicity-reducing mechanism remain unclear. PURPOSE: On the basis of the first recognition of the dose and duration at which pre-fluoxetine caused hepatic injury, co-catalpol's alleviation of fluoxetine-induced hepatic injury and its pathway was comprehensively elucidated. METHOD AND RESULTS: The hepatoprotection of co-catalpol was evaluated by serum biochemical indexes sensitive to hepatic injury and multiple staining techniques for hepatic pathologic analysis. Subsequently, the pathway by which catalpol alleviated fluoxetine-induced hepatic injury was predicted by network pharmacology to be predominantly the inhibition of ferroptosis. These were validated and confirmed in subsequent experiments with key technologies and diagnostic reagents related to ferroptosis. Further molecular docking showed that activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) and ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1) were the the most prospective molecules for catalpol and fluoxetine among many ferroptosis-related molecules. The critical role of ATF3/FSP1 signaling was further observed by surface plasmon resonance, diagnostic reagents, transmission electron microscopy, Western blot, real-time PCR, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. Results showed that fluoxetine directly bound to ATF3 and FSP1; agonisting ATF3 or blocking FSP1 abolished the alleviation of catalpol on fluoxetine-induced liver injury, and both exacerbated ferroptosis. Moreover, co-catalpol significantly enhanced the antidepressant efficacy of fluoxetine against depressive behaviours in mice. CONCLUSION: The hepatic impairment properties of fluoxetine were largely dependent on ATF3/FSP1 target-mediated ferroptosis. Co-catalpol alleviated fluoxetine-induced hepatic injury while enhancing its antidepressant efficacy, and that ATF3/FSP1 signaling-mediated inhibition of ferroptosis was involved in its co-administration detoxification mechanism. This study was the first to reveal the hepatotoxicity characteristics, targets, and mechanisms of fluoxetine; provide a detoxification and efficiency regimen by co-catalpol; and elucidate the detoxification mechanism.

Background: Despite the increasing global prevalence of depression, existing treatment methods have limitations. Acupuncture has been recognized for its potential to alleviate various diseases by regulating inflammatory cytokines. However, a comprehensive systematic analysis of the effects of acupuncture on depression through inflammatory cytokines is currently lacking. This review aims to evaluate the impact of acupuncture on inflammatory cytokines in animal models of depression. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Research Information Service System to identify studies that met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of each included study was assessed using a 10-item checklist adapted from the Cochrane Collaboration methods and animal data review. Meta-analysis was performed using STATA 17.0 software for literature that met the inclusion criteria. Results: The meta-analysis included a total of 21 studies involving 376 rodents. The overall quality of the included reports was rated as moderate or higher. The results demonstrated that acupuncture had a significant effect on the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including: IL-1ß [SMD = 3.36, 95% CI (2.73, 4.00), I2 = 73.3%, p < 0.05], IL-6 [SMD = 3.05, 95% CI (2.45, 3.64), I2 = 68%, p < 0.05], and TNF-α [SMD = 3.30, 95% CI (2.53, 4.06), I2 = 74.5%, p < 0.05]. Conversely, acupuncture was associated with an increased expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines, notably: IL-4 [SMD = -1.64, 95% CI (-2.46, -0.82), I2 = 4.1%, p = 0.307] and IL-10 [SMD = -1.45, 95% CI (-2.24, -0.66), I2 = 0, p = 0.678]. These results suggest that acupuncture modulates cytokine levels in depressed rodents, including reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines, thereby regulating the immune-related antidepressant pathway. Conclusion: While this study is limited by the number of included studies, the results suggest that acupuncture may be a viable option for the treatment of depression, and this effect is achieved through the regulation of various inflammatory cytokines. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae; RDB) is commonly used as an expectorant and cough suppressant herb but is accompanied by severe hepatotoxicity. Using the juice of auxiliary herbs (such as Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma; GRR) juice) in concocting poisonous Chinese medicine is a conventional method to reduce toxicity or increase effects. Our previous study found that concoction with GRR juice provided a detoxifying effect against the major toxic hepatotoxicity induced by RDB, but the principle for the detoxification of the concoction is unknown to date. AIM OF THE STUDY: The principle of concoction was investigated by using the processing excipient GRR juice to reduce the major toxic hepatotoxicity of RDB, and the efficacy of RDB as an expectorant and cough suppressant was enhanced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, common factors (RDB:GRR ratio, concocted temperature, and concocted time) in the concoction process were used for the preparation of each RDB concocted with GRR juice by using an orthogonal experimental design. We measured the content of the main toxic compound diosbulbin B (DB) and serum biochemical indicators and performed pathological analysis in liver tissues of mice to determine the best detoxification process of RDB concocted with GRR juice. On this basis, the biological mechanisms of target organs were detected by Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at the inflammation and apoptosis levels. Further, the effects of RDB on expectorant and cough suppressant with GRR juice were evaluated by the conventional tests of phenol red expectorant and concentrated ammonia-induced cough. Lastly, the major compounds in the GRR juice introduced to RDB concoction were determined. RESULTS: RDB concocted with GRR juice significantly alleviated DB content, serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase levels, and improved liver pathological damages. The best detoxification process was achieved by using an RDB:GRR ratio of 100:20 at 120 °C for 20 min. Further, RDB concocted with GRR juice down-regulated the protein levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), and Bcl-2 related X protein (Bax) in the liver and enhanced the expectorant and cough suppressant effects of RDB. Finally, liquiritin (LQ) and glycyrrhizic acid (GA) in the GRR juice were introduced to the RDB concoction. CONCLUSION: Concoction with GRR juice not only effectively reduced the major toxic hepatotoxicity of RDB but also enhanced its main efficacy as an expectorant and cough suppressant, and that the rationale for the detoxification and/or potentiation of RDB was related to the reduction in the content of the main hepatotoxic compound, DB, the introduction of the hepatoprotective active compounds, LQ and GA, in the auxiliary GRR juice, as well as the inhibition of NF-κB/COX-2/Bax signaling-mediated inflammation and apoptosis.

For the first time, this study evaluated the gender differences and mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of raw Rehmanniae Radix(RRR) based on the classic depression model with traditional Chinese medicine syndrome of Yin deficiency and internal heat. The depression model with Yin deficiency and internal heat was established by the widely recognized and applied method of thyroxine induction of the classic depression model with Yin deficiency and internal heat(chronic unpredictable mild stress). Male and female mice were simultaneously treated with RRR. The study analyzed indicators of nourishing Yin and clearing heat, conventional antidepressant efficacy test indicators, and important biomolecules reflecting the pathogenesis and prevention and treatment mechanisms of depression, and conducted a correlation analysis of antidepressant efficacy, Yin-nourishing and heat-clearing efficacy, and biological mechanism in different genders, thereby comprehensively assessing the antidepressant effects of RRR on depression of Yin deficiency and internal heat, as well as its gender differences and mechanisms. RRR exhibited antidepressant effects in both male and female mouse models, and its antidepressant efficacy showed gender differences, with a superior effect observed in females. Moreover, the effects of RRR on enhancing or improving hippocampal neuronal pathology, nucleus-positive areas, postsynaptic dense area protein 95, and synaptophysin protein expression were more significant in females than in males. In addition, RRR significantly reversed the abnormal upregulation of nuclear factor(NF)-κB/cyclooxygenase 2(COX2)/NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3(NLRP3) pathway proteins in the hippocampus of both male and female mouse models. The antidepressant effects of RRR were more pronounced in depression female mice with Yin deficiency and internal heat syndrome, possibly due to the improvement of neuronal damage and enhancement of neuroplasticity. The antidepressant mechanisms of RRR for depression with Yin deficiency and internal heat syndrome may be associated with the downregulation of the NF-κB/COX2/NLRP3 pathway to reduce neuronal damage and enhance neuroplasticity.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of ACT-based interventions on improving the mental health of parents of children with SHCN compared to active/inactive controls and to investigate the characteristics/components of the effective interventions in the included studies. METHODS: Eight databases were searched from inception to 14 February 2023. We included all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ACT-based interventions for parents of children with SHCN published in English or Chinese journals and dissertations reporting at least one parental mental health outcome postintervention. RESULTS: Fourteen RCTs were included. The results indicated significant improvements of ACT-based interventions in the stress (Hedges' g = -0.36), depressive symptoms (g = -0.32), anxiety (g = -0.29), distress (g = -0.29), psychological flexibility (g = 0.51), mindful awareness/mindfulness abilities (g = 0.41), and confidence/self-efficacy (g = 0.30) of parents, as well as in the emotional and behavioural problems (EBP; g = -0.39) of their children with SHCN postintervention, with moderate to high certainty of evidence. Furthermore, the optimal components of ACT-based interventions, including the intervention approaches (ACT combined with another parenting technique/program), active participants (only involving parents), delivery mode (in-person) and format (group-based format), and desirable number of sessions (4-8 sessions), were identified to inform the design of future interventions/studies. CONCLUSION: This review highlights the positive effects of ACT-based interventions on mental health, psychological flexibility, mindful awareness/mindfulness abilities, and confidence/self-efficacy in parents and EBP in children with SHCN. Since group-based ACT combined with a parenting technique/program was identified as the optimal effective strategy, its effects could be further examined in larger-scale RCTs with parents and children with SHCN with diverse ethnic and sociodemographic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is a naturally produced hydrophilic bile acid that has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. Numerous recent in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that TUDCA has neuroprotective action in various models of retinal disorders. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the scientific literature and provide a comprehensive summary on the neuroprotective action and the mechanisms involved in the cytoprotective effects of TUDCA. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Systematic literature search of United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Web of Science, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane Library was performed, which covered all original articles published up to July 2022. The terms, "TUDCA" in combination with "retina", "retinal protection", "neuroprotection" were searched. Possible biases were identified with the adopted SYRCLE's tool. RESULTS: Of the 423 initially gathered studies, 24 articles met inclusion/exclusion criteria for full-text review. Six of them were in vitro experiments, 17 studies reported in vivo data and one study described both in vitro and in vivo data. The results revealed the effect of TUDCA on different retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinal degeneration (RD), retinal gangli on cell (RGC) damage, Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and retinal detachment (RDT). The quality scores of the in vivo studies were ranged from 5 to 7 points (total 10 points), according to SYRCLE's risk of bias tool. Both in vitro and in vivo data suggested that TUDCA could effectively delay degeneration and apoptosis of retinal neurons, preserve retinal structure and function, and its mechanism of actions might be related with inhibiting apoptosis, decreasing inflammation, attenuating oxidative stress, suppressing endoplasmic reticulum(ES) stress, and reducing angiogenesis. CONCLUSION: This systematic review demonstrated that TUDCA has neuroprotective effect on in vivo and in vitro models of retinal disorders, reinforcing the currently available evidence that TUDCA could be a promising therapeutic agent in retinal diseases treatment. However, well designed clinical trials are necessary to appraise the efficacy of TUDCA in clinical setting.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence that humor interventions can impact chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Synthesize relevant literature to understand the elements and mechanisms of implementation of humor interventions. METHODS: Relevant peer-reviewed articles were searched. Data were extracted according to the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 261 articles. Nine were included in the scoping review. The studies included laughter (n = 5) and humorous video interventions (n = 4) in a face-to-face group format. The tailoring and fidelity process needs to be more detailed in most studies. None of the studies mentioned the theoretical basis. The humor videos were provided by nurses and required various types of equipment. The video interventions were conducted during dialysis. The laughter intervention consisted of 3-4 themes guided by qualified therapists. The timing of the laughter intervention is chosen based on the patient's dialysis schedule and is maintained for 30 min. CONCLUSION: The characteristics of the current study somewhat limit the understanding, replication, and implementation of evidence-based humor interventions. Future studies need to clarify the theoretical basis, tailoring, fidelity, and control groups. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Ongoing reporting and evaluation of the implementation of humor interventions may help better understand their underlying mechanisms.

As an indispensable element in the morphology and phytochemical profile of plants, UV-A has proved to help promote the growth and quality of kale. In this study, UV-A supplementation in different photoperiods (light period supplemental UVA = LS, dark period supplemental UVA = DS, and light-dark period supplemental UVA = LDS) contributed to yielding greater biomass production (fresh weight, dry weight, and plant moisture content), thus improving morphology (plant height, stem diameter, etc.) and promoting higher phytochemicals content (flavonoids, vitamin c, etc.), especially glucosinolates. To fathom its mechanisms, this study, using RNA-seq, verified that UV-A supplementation treatments signally generated related DEGs of plant hormone signal pathway, circadian rhythm plant pathway, glucosinolate pathway, etc. Moreover, 2047 DEGs were obtained in WGCNA, illustrating the correlations between genes, treatments, and pathways. Additionally, DS remarkedly up-regulated related DEGs of the key pathways and ultimately contributed to promoting the stem diameter, plant height, etc., thus increasing the pigment, biomass, vitamin c, etc., enhancing the antioxidant capacity, and most importantly, boosting the accumulations of glucosinolates in kale. In short, this study displayed new insights into UV-A supplementation affected the pathways related to the morphology and phytochemical profile of kale in plant factories.

Non-invasive light-based antibacterial therapy has a good prospect in non-surgical treatment of peri-implant infections. However, its applications are severely limited by poor penetration of light into human tissues, leading to unsatisfying outcomes. Moreover, as an essential prerequisite for traditional light therapy, lasers can no longer meet the patients' needs for convenient treatment at any time. To break through the spatial and temporal limitations of traditional light therapy, a wireless-powered blue-light zirconia implant for readily available treatment of peri-implant infection is proposed. In space, complete irradiation to complex peri-implant structure is realized by the built-in wireless-powered light source, thus improving the efficacy. In time, wireless-powering allows timely and controllable anti-infection treatment. Blue micro-light emitting diodes are used as therapeutic light sources, which effectively kill peri-implant infection-related bacteria without exogenous photosensitive agents. Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilm on implant surface can be completely killed after 20 min irradiation in vitro. The bactericidal rate of peri-implant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection reaches 99.96 ± 0.03% under 30 min per day blue light exposure in vivo. Within the scope of this study, the treatment of peri-implant infection with blue-light implant has preliminary feasibility, giving a new approach to non-invasive treatment of deep oral infections, including peri-implant infections.

With far-red-light supplementation (3 W·m-2, and 6 W·m-2), the flower budding rate, plant height, internode length, plant display, and stem diameter of Chinese kale were largely elevated, as well as the leaf morphology such as leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, and leaf area. Consequently, the fresh weight and dry weight of the edible parts of Chinese kale were markedly increased. The photosynthetic traits were enhanced, and the mineral elements were accumulated. To further explore the mechanism that far-red light simultaneously promoted the vegetative growth and reproductive growth of Chinese kale, this study used RNA sequencing to gain a global perspective on the transcriptional regulation, combining it with an analysis of composition and content of phytohormones. A total of 1409 differentially expressed genes were identified, involved mainly in pathways related to photosynthesis, plant circadian rhythm, plant hormone biosynthesis, and signal transduction. The gibberellins GA9, GA19, and GA20 and the auxin ME-IAA were strongly accumulated under far-red light. However, the contents of the gibberellins GA4 and GA24, the cytokinins IP and cZ, and the jasmonate JA were significantly reduced by far-red light. The results indicated that the supplementary far-red light can be a useful tool to regulate the vegetative architecture, elevate the density of cultivation, enhance the photosynthesis, increase the mineral accumulation, accelerate the growth, and obtain a significantly higher yield of Chinese kale.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common genetic disorder that causes blindness. At present, there exists no remedy for the disease. The aim of the current research was to investigate the protective effect of Zhangyanming Tablets (ZYMT) in a mouse model of RP, and explore the underlying mechanism. Eighty RP mice were randomly divided into two groups. The mice in ZYMT group were administered with ZYMT suspension(0.0378 g/mL), while the mice in model group were given the same volume of distilled water. At day 7 and day 14 after intervention, electroretinogram (ERG), fundus photography, and histological examination were used to assess the retinal function and structure. TUNEL, immunofluorescence and qPCR were used to evaluate cell apoptosis and expressions of Sirt1, Iba1, Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3. A significantly shortened latency of ERG waves was observed in ZYMT-treated mice, in comparison to those in the model group (P < 0.05). Histologically, ultrastructure of the retina was better preserved, and the outer nuclear layer (ONL) exhibited marked increase in thickness and cell count in ZYMP group (P < 0.05). The apoptosis rate was decreased markedly in ZYMT group. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that the expressions of Iba1 and Bcl-2 in the retina were increased, Bax and Caspase-3 were decreased after ZYMT intervention, while the qPCR revealed that the expressions of Iba1 and Sirt1 were significantly increased (P < 0.05). This study indicated that ZYMT has protective effect on retinal function and morphology of inherited RP mice in the early stage, possibly mediated via the regulation of antioxidant and anti-/pro-apoptotic factors expressions.

The effects of supplemental UV-A (385 nm) period and UV-A intensity for 5 days before harvest (DBH) on growth, antioxidants, antioxidant capacity, and glucosinolates contents in Chinese kale (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra Bailey) were studied in plant factory. In the experiment of the UV-A period, three treatments were designed with 10 W·m-2 UV-A supplement, T1(5 DBH), T2 (10 DBH), and no supplemental UV-A as control. In the experiment of UV-A intensity, four treatments were designed with 5 DBH, control (0 W·m-2), 5 w (5 W·m-2), 10 w (10 W·m-2), and 15 w (15 W·m-2). The growth light is as follows: 250 µmol·m-2·s-1; red light: white light = 2:3; photoperiod: 12/12. The growth and quality of Chinese kale were improved by supplemental UV-A LED. The plant height, stem diameter, and biomass of Chinese kale were the highest in the 5 W·m-2 treatment for 5 DBH. The contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll were only highly increased by 5 W·m-2 UV-A for 5 DBH, while there was no significant difference in the content of carotenoid among all treatments. The contents of soluble sugar and free amino acid were higher only under 10 DBH treatments than in control. The contents of total phenolic and total antioxidant capacity were the highest in 5 W·m-2 treatment for 5 DBH. There was a significant positive correlation between total phenolic content and DPPH and FRAP value. After 5 DBH treatments, the percentages and contents of total aliphatic glucosinolates, sinigrin (SIN), gluconapin (GNA), and glucobrassicanapin (GBN) were highly increased, while the percentages and contents of glucobrassicin (GBS), 4-methoxyglucobrassicin (4-MGBS), and Progoitrin (PRO) were significantly decreased, especially under 10 W·m-2 treatment. Our results show that UV-A LED supplements could improve the growth and quality of Chinese kale, and 5 W·m-2 UV-A LED with 5 DBH might be feasible for Chinese kale growth, and 10 W·m-2 UV-A LED with 5 DBH was better for aliphatic glucosinolates accumulation in Chinese kale.

Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L. Micro-Tom) were grown in a plastic greenhouse. When plants anthesis, the 100 µmol m-2 s-1 blue light-emitting diode (LED) light (430 ± 10 nm) was supplemented from 6:00 to 18:00. There were 5 treatments, which contained different blue light frequencies with the same intensity: S6 (30 min blue light and 30 min pause), S8 (30 min blue light and 15 min pause), S10 (30 min blue and 8 min pause), S12 (continuous blue light for 12 h), and control (CK) (natural light, without any supplemental light). Agronomic traits and nutritional qualities of tomato fruits were measured at 30, 34, 38, 42, and 46 days after anthesis (DAA), respectively. Different frequencies of supplemental blue light could accelerate flowering of tomato plants and promote fruit ripening about 3-4 days early via promoting ethylene evolution of fruits, which significantly facilitated the processes of color change and maturity in tomato fruits. The contents of lycopene, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, vitamin C, and soluble sugar, as well as the overall antioxidant activity of tomato fruits were significantly enhanced by all the supplemental blue light treatments. In all, different frequencies of supplemental blue light prominently reinforced the antioxidant levels and nutritional qualities of tomato fruits, especially lycopene content, and S10 was more optimal for tomato fruits production in a plastic greenhouse.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of eye diseases has been increasing worldwide. In China, in addition to conventional medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) plays an important role in maintaining people's vision health. Although less flexible and targeted than TCM decoction, Chinese Patent Medicines (CPMs) are stable and well used. In recent years, CPMs have been increasingly used in ophthalmology clinics by TCM practitioners and by Western doctors in general hospitals. However, comprehensive evidence for using CPMs in ophthalmology is lacking. AIM: We will apply the methodology of scoping review to systematically search and sort out the available evidence on oral CPMs for the treatment of eye diseases, identify the distribution of evidence in this field and provide a basis for clinical practice and medical decisions. METHODS: The scoping review will be implemented in the following seven steps: (1) defining the research question; (2) searching National Essential Medicines List (2018 edition), National Basic Medical Insurance, Work Injury Insurance and Maternity Insurance Drug Catalog (2020 edition) and Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition) for oral CPMs for the treatment of eye diseases; (3) searching Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Chongqing VIP Chinese Scientific Journals Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and Wanfang Database for relevant literature published from inception to December 2021; (4) developing eligibility criteria; (5) screening the studies based on inclusion criteria; (6) extracting relevant data and lastly, (7) collating, summarising and reporting the results. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Since the scoping review aims at collecting data from publicly available publications, this study does not require ethical approval. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at scientific conferences.

Aim: To assess the pain and function of acupuncture in patients with nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP). Design: This is a study protocol for an upcoming, updated systematic review and meta-analysis. We have registered on the PROSPERO platform, and the registration number is CRD42020149647. Methods: We will identify studies in seven English databases, including Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Medline, Embase, and Scopus, and in four Chinese databases, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Biology Medicine disc (CBMdisc), Wanfang Database, and VIP database. We will also manually search key journals about acupuncture, the references of identified relevant trials, and the Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Different search strategies of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and non-MeSH terms will be applied alone or integrated. We will evaluate methodological quality by adopting Cochrane's risk of bias criteria and perform a meta-analysis using RevMan V.5.4 software. Results: This study's results will be reported according to the PRISMA checklist and presented at an authoritative scientific conference or an authoritative scientific journal.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the effect of perioperative aromatherapy (AT) or/plus music therapy (MT) on pain and anxiety level, and the potential mechanism in women experiencing breast cancer surgery. METHODS: A total of 160 patients with breast cancer were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1:1 ratio to receive usual care (UC), AT, MT, or combination therapy (CT) during perioperative periods. Pain intensity and anxiety scores were measured by visual analog scale. Interleukin (IL)-6 and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: There was a significant group effect on pain, anxiety, and IL-6 and HMGB-1 levels, with the greatest improvement occurring in the CT group (P < .001). Compared with the UC group, the AT and MT groups had lower mean changes of pain intensity and IL-6 and HMGB-1 levels, and greater anxiety reduction (P < .001). However, the differences between the AT and MT groups did not reach significance (P > .05). CONCLUSION: In patients with breast cancer, perioperative CT achieves greater pain improvement and anxiety reduction and less marked increase in IL-6 and HMGB-1 levels. These results suggest that CT is an acceptable complementary and alternative medicine for breast cancer patients.

Three different LED spectra (W: White light; WFR: W + far-red light; WB: W + blue light) with similar photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were designed to explore the effects of supplementary far-red and blue lights on leaf color, biomass and phytochemicals of two cultivars of red-leaf lettuce ("Yanzhi" and "Red Butter") in an artificial lighting plant factory. Lettuce plants under WB had redder leaf color and significantly higher contents of pigments, such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll (a + b) and anthocyanins. The accumulation of health-promoting compounds, such as vitamin C, vitamin A, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids and anthocyanins in the two lettuce cultivars were obviously enhanced by WB. Lettuce under WFR showed remarkable increase in fresh weight and dry weight; meanwhile, significant decreases of pigments, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids and vitamin C were found. Thus, in the plant factory system, the application of WB can improve the coloration and quality of red leaf lettuce while WFR was encouraged for the purpose of elevating the yield of lettuce.

Addition of selenium or application of ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation for crop production could be an effective way of producing phytochemical-rich food. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of selenium and UVA radiation, as well as their combination on growth and phytochemical contents in broccoli microgreens. There were three treatments: Se (100 µmol/L Na2SeO3), UVA (40 µmol/m2/s) and Se + UVA (with application of Se and UVA). The control (CK) was Se spraying-free and UVA radiation-free. Although treatment with Se or/and UVA inhibited plant growth of broccoli microgreens, results showed that phytochemical contents increased. Broccoli microgreens under the Se treatment had higher contents of total soluble sugars, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, ascorbic acid, Fe, and organic Se and had lower Zn content. The UVA treatment increased the contents of total chlorophylls, total soluble proteins, total phenolic compounds, and FRAP. However, the Se + UVA treatment displayed the most remarkable effect on the contents of total anthocyanins, glucoraphanin, total aliphatic glucosinolates, and total glucosinolates; here, significant interactions between Se and UVA were observed. This study provides valuable insights into the combinational selenium and UVA for improving the phytochemicals of microgreens grown in an artificial lighting plant factory.

BACKGROUND: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness among the older people aged 50 and over. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies have resulted in improving patient outcomes, there are limitations associated with these treatments. In China, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat eye diseases for more than 2000 years. Previous studies have shown that TCM may be beneficial for nAMD patients. However, explicit evidence has not been obtained. The purpose of the present trial is to examine the efficacy and safety of the Mingjing granule, a compound Chinese herbal medicine, for nAMD patients. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of Mingjing granule as an add-on to intravitreous ranibizumab for nAMD. One hundred eighty nAMD patients from six hospitals in China will be enrolled according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly allocated into two groups, 90 in each. All participants will receive a 24-week treatment and then be followed up for another 24 weeks. The primary outcome is the mean change of best-corrected visual acuity at week 24 and 48 as compared to the baseline. The secondary outcomes include mean change in central retinal thickness, area of retinal hemorrhage and exudation, and TCM syndrome score, mean number of intravitreal ranibizumab injection, and total cost of the treatment. Indexes of safety include blood regular test, urine regular test, liver function test, renal function test, and electrocardiogram from baseline to weeks 24 and 48. Qualitative control and some standard operating processes will be formed throughout the trial. Any ocular or systemic adverse events will be treated suitably, and related data will be recorded accurately and completely in the case report form. DISCUSSION: Based on previous empirical and animal laboratory studies, this study will address the question of whether Mingjing granule could contribute to improving efficacy, safety, and efficiency with need for fewer intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF, improving compliance and visual outcomes in the management of persons with nAMD.
