The Mesozoic terrestrial Jehol Biota of northern China exceeds the biomass and biodiversity of contemporaneous Lagerstätten. From 135 to 120 Ma, biotic radiation may have responded to the peak destruction of the North China Craton. However, the direct mechanistic link between geological and biological evolution is unclear. Phosphorus (P), a bio-essential nutrient, can be supplied by weathering of volcanics in terrestrial ecosystems. The middle-late Mesozoic volcanic-sedimentary sequences of northern China are amazingly rich in terrestrial organisms. Here we demonstrate episodic increases in P delivery, biological productivity, and species abundance in these strata to reveal the coevolution of volcanism and terrestrial biotas. A massive P supply from the weathering of voluminous volcanic products of craton destruction thus supported a terrestrial environment conducive to the high prosperity of the Jehol Biota. During the nascent stage of craton destruction, such volcanic-biotic coupling can also account for the preceding Yanliao Biota with relatively fewer fossils.

The treatment of oilfield wastewater with high crude oil content and complex composition is a problem requiring considerable attention. In order to effectively remove crude oil contained in wastewater, in this work, rice straw, as an oil-absorbing material, was modified and used as a sorbent for crude oil. Rice straw was modified with alkali and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) by simple substitution reaction. The adsorption capacity of modified rice straw for oil was evaluated. The results illustrate that the adsorption rate of rice straw for crude oil was increased from 0.83 to 8.49 g/g, with the optimal conditions of 18% NaOH reacted for 90 min at 50 °C and 2% CTAC reacted for 60 min at 20 °C. The proposed modification method could be used for different materials to enhance the adsorption rate. The results of the contact angle test show that the modified straw changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, which may be the main reason for the improvement in the oil absorption rate. Finally, the surface structure of rice straw was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, which further confirmed the hydrophobicity of the modified rice straw.

Green tea is a popular beverage and is widely consumed due to its taste and antioxidative polyphenols. Herein, a smartphone-based colorimetric reader using cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanorings has been successfully applied to detect antioxidants in green tea with high reliability and robustness. By exploiting the oxidase-mimicking activity, the as-synthesized CoOOH nanorings replaces natural enzymes to directly catalyze oxidate colorless 3,3 ´ ,5,5 ´ -tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), while antioxidants can disintegrate CoOOH, leading to an antioxidant concentration-dependent color change. Benefiting from the CoOOH nanorings-based colorimetric strategy, a smartphone-assistant nanosensor was devised for portable and visual detection of antioxidants in green tea. The proposed method can be extended to visual detection of a diverse range of diseases by responding to their specific antioxidant, and thus provide a pivotal disease toolbox that is compatible for development at the point-of-care.

Long-term endocrine treatment which results in estrogen deprivation causes chronic stress associated with a series of uncomfortable symptoms leading not only to a decrease in quality of life but also to cancer recurrence, which may be mediated primarily through the enhanced expression of angiogenic factors, as well as a series of inflammatory microenvironmental changes that favor tumor progression. In this study, we designed a clinical trial and aimed to explore the effects of Sanhuang Decoction (SHD) treatment on chronic stress, inflammatory factors, and breast cancer recovery. A total of 90 patients with breast cancer who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were randomly allocated to a treatment or control group. The treatment group received the standard endocrine treatment and the traditional Chinese medicine decoction known as SHD. The control group received the standard endocrine treatment only. The treatment period was 6 months. The modified Kupperman Menopausal Index, the self-rating anxiety scale, and the self-rating depression scale were evaluated once per month. The body microenvironment plasma indices related to chronic stress, such as oxidative and antioxidative stress markers, inflammatory factors, hemorheology, coagulation, lipid and D-dimer, immunologic functions, tumor biomarkers, and angiogenic factors of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were measured before and after 6 months of treatment. After treatment for 5 months, the scores in the treatment group decreased to nearly normal levels and the control group showed no significant improvement. After treatment for 6 months, all indices related to the body microenvironment, as well as the tumor biomarkers and carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 153, and angiogenic factor VEGF levels improved significantly to normal levels in the treatment group. Our primary research showed that treatment with SHD effectively improved the quality of life of breast cancer patients by facilitating a change in the body microenvironment that controlled tumor growth and prevented drug resistance. The reduced coenzymes (NADH and NADPH) are an important product in energy metabolism and closely related to the occurrence and development of cancer. So it is necessary to use a powerful detection tool to visualize NAD(P)H in energy metabolism of tumor cells and find a new strategy to improve cancer treatment based on NAD(P)H. Herein, a novel multifunctional probe (Cy-N) is synthesized with good near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) response to NAD(P)H and the photoacoustic (PA) and photothermal properties are successfully activated by NAD(P)H. The probe is successfully applied in visualizing NAD(P)H in energy metabolism of tumor cells and imaging NAD(P)H in bacteria. Moreover, the probe can be used to image NAD(P)H in energy metabolism of tumor-bearing mice by dual-modal imaging (NIRF and PA). More importantly, in terms of the role of NAD(P)H in energy metabolism, the photothermal therapy (PTT) is activated by NAD(P)H and a novel strategy of enhanced PTT is proposed by injecting glucose. As far as we know, this is the first probe to detect NAD(P)H in energy metabolism through dual-modal imaging, and also the first probe to activate PTT based on NAD(P)H, which will provide important information of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

San Huang Decoction (SHD), a Chinese herb formula, has been popularly prescribed in the clinical treatment of patients suffering from breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore the anti-angiogenic effects of SHD in breast cancer and explain the underlying mechanism. Transwell and Matrigel assays showed that SHD reduced human umbilical vein endothelial cell migration and tubule formation and ELISA and qRT-PCR assays demonstrated its mediation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. siRNA silencing of aurora kinase A (AURKA) produced results similar to those obtained by inhibition of AURKA with SHD. In addition, a chorioallantoic membrane assay was carried out to directly examine the effect of SHD on breast cancer anti-angiogenesis and immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical staining analysis showed that SHD reduced the expression of CD31, AURKA, and VEGF in a xenograft model. Furthermore, SHD regulated extracellular signal-regulated kinase expression in breast cancer cells, which was examined by western blotting. In conclusion, our findings indicated that SHD treatment mimicked the decrease in tumor neovascularization in breast cancer cells after the siRNA-mediated knockdown of AURKA. Thus, SHD may inhibit tumor angiogenesis in breast cancer by targeting AURKA and downregulating the ERK signaling pathway.
