Background: Bungarus multicinctus is one of the most dangerous venomous snakes prone to cardiopulmonary damage with extremely high mortality. In our previous work, we found that glutamine (Gln) and glutamine synthetase (GS) in pig serum were significantly reduced after Bungarus multicinctus bite. In the present study, to explore whether there is a link between the pathogenesis of cardiopulmonary injury and Gln metabolic changes induced by Bungarus multicinctus venom. We investigated the effect of Gln supplementation on the lung and heart function after snakebite. Methods: We supplemented different concentrations of Gln to mice that were envenomated by Bungarus multicinctus to observe the biological behavior, survival rate, hematological and pathological changes. Gln was supplemented immediately or one hour after the venom injection, and then changes in Gln metabolism were analyzed. Subsequently, to further explore the protective mechanism of glutamine on tissue damage, we measured the expression of heat-shock protein70 (HSP70), NF-κB P65, P53/PUMA by western blotting and real-time polymerase in the lung and heart. Results: Gln supplementation delayed the envenoming symptoms, reduced mortality, and alleviated the histopathological changes in the heart and lung of mice bitten by Bungarus multicinctus. Additionally, Gln increased the activity of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and glutaminase (GLS) in serum. It also balanced the transporter SLC7A11 expression in heart and lung tissues. Bungarus multicinctus venom induced the NF-κB nuclear translocation in the lung, while the HO-1 expression was suppressed. At the same time, venom activated the P53/PUMA signaling pathway and the BAX expression in the heart. Gln treatment reversed the above phenomenon and increased HSP70 expression. Conclusion: Gln alleviated the glutamine metabolism disorder and cardiopulmonary damage caused by Bungarus multicinctus venom. It may protect lungs and heart against venom by promoting the expression of HSP70, inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and P53/PUMA, thereby delaying the process of snake venom and reducing mortality. The present results indicate that Gln could be a potential treatment for Bungarus multicinctus bite.

Mental imagery and perceptual cues can influence subsequent visual search performance, but examination of this influence has been limited to low-level features like colors and shapes. The present study investigated how the two types of cues influence low-level visual search, visual search with realistic objects, and executive attention. On each trial, participants were either presented with a colored square or tasked with using mental imagery to generate a colored square that could match the target (valid trial) or distractor (invalid trial) in the search array that followed (Experiments 1 and 3). In a separate experiment, the colored square displayed or generated was replaced with a realistic object in a specific category that could appear as a target or distractor in the search array (Experiment 2). Although the displayed object was in the same category as an item in the search display, they were never a perfect match (e.g., jam drop cookie instead of chocolate chip). Our findings revealed that the facilitation of performance on valid trials compared with invalid trials was greater for perceptual cues than imagery cues for low-level features (Experiment 1), whereas the influence of these two types of cues was comparable in the context of realistic objects (Experiment 2) The influence of mental imagery appears not to extend to the resolution of conflict generated by color-word Stroop stimuli (Experiment 3). The present findings extend our understanding of how mental imagery influences the allocation of attention.

The continuous evolution of the H7N9 avian influenza virus suggests a potential outbreak of an H7N9 pandemic. Therefore, to prevent a potential epidemic of the H7N9 influenza virus, it is necessary to develop an effective crossprotective influenza vaccine. In this study, we developed H7N9 virus-like particles (VLPs) containing HA, NA, and M1 proteins derived from H7N9/16876 virus and a helper antigen HMN based on influenza conserved epitopes using a baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS). The results showed that the influenza VLP vaccine induced a strong HI antibody response and provided effective protection comparable with the effects of commercial inactivated H7N9 vaccines against homologous H7N9 virus challenge in chickens. Meanwhile, the H7N9 VLP vaccine induced robust crossreactive HI and neutralizing antibody titers against antigenically divergent H7N9 viruses isolated in wave 5 and conferred on chickens complete clinical protection against heterologous H7N9 virus challenge, significantly inhibiting virus shedding in chickens. Importantly, supplemented vaccination with HMN antigen can enhance Th1 immune responses; virus shedding was completely abolished in the vaccinated chickens. Our study also demonstrated that viral receptor-binding avidity should be taken into consideration in evaluating an H7N9 candidate vaccine. These studies suggested that supplementing influenza VLP vaccine with recombinant epitope antigen will be a promising strategy for the development of broad-spectrum influenza vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Isaacs' syndrome is a peripheral nerve hyperexcitability (PNH) syndrome due to peripheral motor nerve instability. Acquired Isaacs' syndrome is recognized as a paraneoplastic autoimmune disease with possible pathogenic voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex antibodies. However, the longitudinal correlation between clinical symptoms, VGKC antibodies level, and drug response is still unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old man had progressive four limbs soreness, muscle twitching, cramps, and pain 4 months before admission. Electromyography (EMG) studies showed myokymic discharges, neuromyotonia, and an incremental response in the high-rate (50 Hz) repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) test. Isaacs' syndrome was diagnosed based on clinical presentations and EMG reports. Serum studies showed positive VGKC complex antibodies, including leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) and contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) antibodies. The acetylcholine receptor antibody was negative. Whole-body computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography revealed a mediastinal tumor with the great vessels encasement, right pleura, and diaphragm seeding. Biopsy confirmed a World Health Organization type B2 thymoma, with Masaoka stage IVa. His symptoms gradually improved and both LGI1 and CASPR2 antibodies titer became undetectable after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) and high dose steroid treatment. However, his Isaacs' syndrome recurred after the steroid was reduced 5 months later. Follow-up chest CT showed probable thymoma progression. LGI1 antibody turned positive again while CASPR2 antibody remained undetectable. CONCLUSIONS: Our patient demonstrates that Isaacs' syndrome could be the initial and only neuromuscular manifestation of malignant thymoma. His Isaacs' syndrome is correlated well with the LGI1 antibody level. With an unresectable thymoma, long-term immunosuppressant therapy may be necessary for the management of Isaacs' syndrome in addition to CCRT for thymoma.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of orchard soils is a global problem that has been increasing. To decrease the Cd accumulation in fruits, intercropping the orchard crops with hyperaccumulator plants has been used for soil remediation. A pot and a field experiment were conducted to study the effects of intercropping the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum and its post-grafting generations with loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) on the growth and Cd uptake of these two plant species. In the pot experiment, intercropping improved the biomass, Cd content, Cd extraction, and root-to-shoot Cd translocation in both species. Intercropping increased the DNA methylation levels, antioxidant enzyme activity, and soluble protein content of loquat seedlings. These results indicate that intercropping could improve the phytoremediation of S. photeinocarpum and its post-grafting generations and increase the Cd uptake in loquat seedlings. In the field experiment, intercropping increased the Cd contents in the old branches, while it decreased that in the young branches and fruits of loquat. These findings indicate that intercropping could increase the Cd uptake in old tissues but reduce the Cd uptake in young tissues and fruits of loquat. So, intercropping loquat with S. photeinocarpum and its post-grafting generations could be used in Cd-contaminated orchards.


Intercropping the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum and its post-grafting generations with loquat mutually promoted the growth of two plant species, and also promoted the cadmium uptakes in S. photeinocarpum and old branches of loquat, while inhibited the Cd uptake in the loquat young tissues (young branches and fruits). These results are the new findings of the intercropping.

The study aimed at accessing the effects of mowing on the growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation of the first post-grafting generation of potential Cd-hyperaccumulator plant Solanum photeinocarpum through the pot and plot experiments. Four grafting treatments were employed such as ungrafted (UG), self-rooted grafting by the same S. photeinocarpum seedling (SG), self-rooted grafting by two different development stages of S. photeinocarpum seedlings (DG), and grafting on the rootstock of wild potato (PG). The biomass, Cd content, and Cd extraction amount of S. photeinocarpum shoots significantly decreased with the increase of mowing times in the pot and plot experiments. The order of the grafting on the biomass, Cd content, and Cd extraction amountof in the first, second, third mowing shoots were PG > DG > SG > UG. For the Cd extraction amountof total moving shoots, SG, DG, and PG increased by 20.42%, 35.54%, and 52.94%, respectively, in the pot experiment, and increased by 11.56%, 26.28%, and 44.90%, respectively, in the plot experiment, compared with the UG. Therefore, mowing provides an insight into the phytoremediation ability of S. photeinocarpum to Cd.

Farmland and mining ecotypes of the potential cadmium (Cd)-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum were collected to study the effects of reciprocal grafting on the growth of, and Cd accumulation in, the post-grafting generations. The post generations of the following plant materials were evaluated in a pot experiment: the un-grafted farmland ecotype, grafted plants with the farmland ecotype as the scion or the rootstock, the un-grafted mining ecotype, and grafted plants with the mining ecotype as the scion or the rootstock. The results showed that reciprocal grafting increased the biomass, the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, and the soluble protein content in the post-grafting generations of both ecotypes S. photeinocarpum. Reciprocal grafting also increased the Cd content in, and amount of Cd extracted by, the post-grafting generations of both ecotypes S. photeinocarpum as a result of lower soil pH and higher soil available Cd concentrations. Additionally, grafting affected the DNA methylation levels by inducing hypermethylation or demethylation in the post-grafting generation. Therefore, reciprocal grafting can enhance the Cd accumulation (phytoremediation) capacity of post-grafting generations of both ecotypes S. photeinocarpum by affecting DNA methylation levels.

The contamination of orchard by cadmium (Cd) has recently increased in severity. To decrease the Cd content in fruit tree, a pot-based experiment was conducted to study the effects of intercropping with two Solanum species (Solanum alatum and Solanum diphyllum) on the growth and Cd accumulation of Cyphomandra betacea seedlings. The data revealed that intercropping with two Solanum species significantly increased the biomass, photosynthetic pigment contents, antioxidant enzyme activities, and soluble protein contents of C. betacea seedlings under Cd stress condition. The intercropping significantly decreased the Cd content in C. betacea seedlings. However, the intercropping significantly decreased the S. alatum and S. diphyllum biomasses, while increased the Cd content and accumulation in the roots and shoots of two Solanum species, and the Cd uptake by S. alatum was lower than that of S. diphyllum. Therefore, intercropping with these two Solanum species, especially S. diphyllum, may promote the growth and decrease the Cd content in C. betacea.

In this study, farmland and mining ecotypes of Solanum photeinocarpum (a potential cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator plant) were reciprocally hybridized each other, and the Cd accumulation characteristics of the F1 hybrids were studied. In pot experiments, higher biomasses and Cd extraction abilities were found for two S. photeinocarpum F1 hybrids than for the parents, but the Cd contents in various organs were lower in the hybrids than the parents. However, the differences between the Cd contents in the two hybrids were not significant. The antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase and peroxidase) activities were higher for the S. photeinocarpum F1 hybrids than the parents. Less DNA methylation was found in the hybrids than the parents because more demethylation occurred in the hybrids than the parents. The biomass, Cd content, and Cd extraction ability effects in field experiments were similar to the effects in the pot experiments. It was concluded that reciprocally hybridizing different S. photeinocarpum ecotypes improved the ability of S. photeinocarpum to be used to phytoremediate contaminated land.

Although osimertinib, an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has become the standard therapy for treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR-activating mutation, upregulation of MCL-1 induces acquired resistance to osimertinib. Bufalin, a natural digoxin-like ingredient isolated from a traditional Chinese medicine Chan Su, has been shown to downregulate MCL-1 in NSCLC cells. However, whether bufalin reverses this acquired resistance to osimertinib in NSCLC cells remains unclear. In this study, bufalin reduced cell viability and promoted apoptosis in osimertinib-resistant cells. Moreover, co-treatment with bufalin and osimertinib restored the sensitivity of osimertinib-resistant cells to osimertinib-induced growth regression and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, MEK/ERK-dependent MCL-1 phosphorylation and Ku70-mediated MCL-1 overexpression confer osimertinib resistance in EGFR-mutant NSCLC cells. In osimertinib-resistant cells, bufalin modulates Ku70-mediated MCL-1 degradation, but not MEK/ERK/MCL-1 signaling. In conclusion, our study suggests that bufalin eliminates resistance to osimertinib by inhibiting Ku70-mediated MCL-1 overexpression, indicating that a combination of osimertinib and bufalin could be an effective additional treatment to overcome acquired resistance to osimertinib in NSCLC cells.

The effects of mutual grafting on the cadmium (Cd) accumulation characteristics of two ecotypes (farmland and mining) of the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum were studied through a pot experiment for one month. Four treatments were used in the experiment: ungrafted farmland ecotype (F-CK), ungrafted mining ecotype (M-CK), the farmland ecotype as the scion grafted onto rootstocks of the mining ecotype (F-Scion), and the mining ecotype as the scion grafted onto rootstocks of the farmland ecotype (M-Scion). Mutual grafting increased the rootstock biomass of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes. However, mutual grafting decreased the scion biomass of F-Scion compared with F-CK and M-CK, and the scion biomass of M-Scion was higher than that of M-CK and lower than that of F-CK. The Cd content in the rootstock of M-Scion increased compared with F-CK, and the Cd content in the rootstock of F-Scion increased compared with M-CK, but mutual grafting decreased the Cd content in scions of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes. Mutual grafting increased Cd extraction by rootstocks of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes, but decreased extraction by scions. Therefore, mutual grafting can increase Cd accumulation in S. photeinocarpum rootstocks but not increase Cd accumulation in S. photeinocarpum scions in a short period.

Nicotinamide (Nam) has recently been characterized as an agent for tissue regeneration due to the observed pro­proliferation effects. However, the effect of Nam on liver regeneration remains undetermined. In the present study, the potency of Nam as a regimen to promote liver regeneration and restore liver function was evaluated following partial hepatectomy (PH) on C57BL/6 mice. Ki­67 immunohistochemical and cell cycle analyses demonstrated that exogenous Nam supplementation promoted the proliferation of hepatocytes and accelerated the recovery of liver tissue. The addition of Nam protected liver function following PH, as evidenced by hematoxylin and eosin staining of liver tissue morphology and measurement of serum liver injury markers. Notably, immunoblotting results revealed that the expression and activity of NAD­dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin­1 (SIRT1) were significantly upregulated following treatment with Nam, suggesting that Nam may promote liver regeneration through activation of SIRT1. The present study demonstrated that Nam regulated the process of liver regeneration and improved liver function by activating SIRT1, suggesting that Nam has the potency to be used for promoting liver regeneration following surgical resection.

The effects of application of straw derived from cadmium (Cd) accumulator plants (Siegesbeckia orientalis, Conyza canadensis, Eclipta prostrata, and Solanum photeinocarpum) on growth and Cd accumulation of lettuce plants grown under Cd exposure were studied. Treatment with straw of the four Cd-accumulator species promoted growth, photosynthesis, and soluble protein contents and enhanced the activities of peroxidase in leaves of lettuce seedlings. The biomass of shoot of lettuce from high to low in turn is the treatment of C. canadensis straw > S. photeinocarpum straw > S. orientalis > E. prostrata > Control. The Cd content in edible parts (shoots) of the lettuce plants was significantly decreased in the presence of straw from the Cd-accumulator species, except the presence of the straw of E. prostrata. And, the greatest reduction in Cd content in shoots was 27.09% in the S. photeinocarpum straw treatment compared with that of the control. Therefore, application of straw of S. orientalis, C. canadensis, and S. photeinocarpum can promote the growth of lettuce seedlings, and decrease their Cd accumulation, when grown in Cd-contaminated soil, which is beneficial for production of lettuce safe for human consumption.

Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), a natural polysaccharide with good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is the depolymerized product of chitosan possessing various biological activities. The present study was designed to investigate the possible anti-aging effect of COS on the aging model mouse induced by d-galactose (d-gal) and explore the underlying mechanism. In the experiment, 48 male Kunming mice (KM mice) were randomly divided into the normal group, model group, positive group, and low-medium-high dose polysaccharide groups (300, 600, 1200 mg/kg/day). The results showed that COS, by intragastric gavage after subcutaneous injection of d-gal (250 mg/kg/day) into the neck of mice consecutively for eight weeks, gradually recovered the body weight, the activity of daily living, and organ indices of mice, as well as effectively ameliorated the histological deterioration of the liver and kidney in mice triggered by d-gal. To be specific, COS obviously improved the activities of antioxidant enzymes in liver and kidney of KM mice, including catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels when compared with those in model group mice. Furthermore, COS not only elevated the diminished levels of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM induced by d-gal, but also significantly inhibited the d-gal-caused upregulation of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), uric acid (UA) and creatinine (CREA) levels as compared with those of mice in the model group. These results demonstrate that COS has an obvious anti-aging activity in d-gal-induced subacute aging mice, the mechanism of which, to some extent, is associated with enhancing the antioxidant defenses, reducing oxidative stress, and improving the immune function of aging model mice.

The antiviral cytokine interferon-alpha (IFN-α) plays a critical role in the innate immune system. Previous studies have shown that recombinant chicken IFN-α inhibits avian influenza virus (AIV) replication in vivo; however, the antiviral effect of recombinant duck IFN-α (rDuIFN-α) on highly pathogenic AIV remains unknown. In this study, the duck IFN-α gene was cloned, expressed, and purified. The antiviral effects of the resulting rDuIFN-α were further evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed that rDuIFN-α inhibited the replication of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and AIV in duck embryo fibroblasts in vitro, with antiviral activities against VSV and AIV of 2.1 × 105 and 4.1 × 105 U/mg, respectively. We next investigated the anti-H5N1 AIV effect of intramuscular injection of rDuIFN-α in vivo. rDuIFN-α reduced viral titers in the brains, lungs, and spleens of 2-day-old (2D) ducks compared with that in the virus-challenged control group, and pretreatment with rDuIFN-α reduced mortality from 60% to 10% in 2D ducks. Moreover, rDuIFN-α increased the expression of IFN-stimulated genes in the brains and spleens of 2D ducks. Our results demonstrate that rDuIFN-α blocks VSV and H5N1 influenza virus infection in vitro and exhibits antiviral effects against H5N1 influenza virus infection in 2D ducks.

To determine whether the melatonin (MT) could reduce cadmium (Cd) accumulation in Cyphomandra betacea seedlings, different concentrations of MT were added to the nutrient solution and soil to study its effects on the growth and Cd characteristics of C. betacea seedlings. Fifty micromoles per liter (µmol/kg) of MT increased the biomass of C. betacea seedlings, but 100-200 µmol/L (µmol/kg) MT decreased seedling biomass in both the nutrient solution and soil cultivation experiments. The photosynthetic pigment contents showed no significant changes compared with the control when the MT dose was 150 µmol/L (µmol/kg) or less, while 200 µmol/L (µmol/kg) MT decreased the photosynthetic pigment contents. Low levels of MT improved the antioxidant enzyme activities of C. betacea seedlings, whereas high MT levels reduced them. MT increased the Cd contents in different organs of C. betacea seedlings in the nutrient solution cultivation experiment, but only 50 µmol/kg MT increased the Cd contents in stems, leaves, and shoots of C. betacea seedlings in the soil cultivation experiment. Therefore, only low levels of MT can promote the growth of C. betacea seedlings, and MT is not suitable for reducing Cd accumulation in C. betacea seedlings.

Objective. The randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of topical Chinese herbal Zhangpi Ointment for hydroxyurea-induced leg ulcers in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms. Patients and Methods. This single-center, prospective, randomized, open-label, controlled clinical trial conducted at Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital enrolled 54 patients with hydroxyurea-induced leg ulcers. Patients were randomly assigned to the control group (n = 27) treated with chlorhexidine dressing or the intervention group (n = 27) treated with the Zhangpi Ointment. Finally, 26 patients in the control group and 23 patients in the intervention group completed 8 weeks of observation. Results. The rate of complete healing was 100% for the intervention group, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (96.15%) (P<0.05). Furthermore, the intervention group achieved a significantly higher rate of wound healing (95.56%) than the control group (69.02%) at week 4 (P<0.01). The intervention group took 34 ± 5 days to achieve complete healing while the control group took 41 ± 7 days (P < 0.01). Moreover, grade 3/4 side effects were observed in neither group. Conclusion. The Zhangpi Ointment is effective in promoting the healing of hydroxyurea-induced leg ulcers in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms, providing a therapeutic option for a condition that is recalcitrant to conventional therapy.

Luobuma (Apocynum venetum L. (AVL)) is a popular beverage in Asia and has been reportedly to be associated with the bioactivities such as cardiotonic, diuretic, antioxidative, and antihypertensive. However, its biofunction as chemoprevention activity is seldom addressed. Herein, we aimed to characterize the anti-androgen-insensitive-prostate-cancer (anti-AIPC) bioactive compounds of Luobuma, and to investigate the associated molecular mechanisms. Activity-guided-fractionation (antioxidative activity and cell survivability) of Luobuma ethanolic extracts was performed to isolate and characterize the major bioactive compounds using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Plant sterols (lupeol, stigamasterol and ß-sitosterol) and polyphenolics (isorhamnetin, kaempferol, and quercetin) were identified. Lupeol, a triterpene found in the fraction (F8) eluted by 10% ethyl acetate/90% hexane and accounted for 19.3% (w/w) of F8, inhibited the proliferation of PC3 cells. Both lupeol and F8 induced G2/M arrest, inhibition of ß-catenin signaling, regulation of apoptotic signal molecules (cytochrome c, Bcl-2, P53, and caspase 3 and 8), and suppression DNA repair enzyme expression (Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG)). To our knowledge, our study is the first report that lupeol inhibited the expression of UNG to elicit the cytotoxicity against androgen-insensitive-prostate-cancer cells. Collectively, Luobuma, which contains several antitumor bioactive compounds, holds the potential to be a dietary chemopreventive agent for prostate cancer.

The straw from three different cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulators (Galinsoga parviflora, Youngia erythrocarpa, and Solanum photeinocarpum) was added to Cd-contaminated soil, and its effects on plant growth and Cd accumulation in loquat seedlings were evaluated. Straw from each of G. parviflora, Y. erythrocarpa, and S. photeinocarpum was added to Cd-contaminated soil before planting seedlings of two varieties of loquat (Dawuxing and Chuanzao). Addition of straw from G. parviflora and S. photeinocarpum increased the root and shoot biomasses of both loquat varieties, compared with that in the control. Addition of straw also increased Cd uptake by loquat seedlings. The treatments could be ranked, from highest Cd contents in roots and shoots of loquat seedlings to lowest, as follows: S. photeinocarpum straw > Y. erythrocarpa straw > G. parviflora straw > control. All three types of hyperaccumulator straw increased the amount of Cd extracted by shoots of two loquat seedlings, with the maximum effect in the S. photeinocarpum straw treatment. Addition of hyperaccumulator straw also resulted in increased soil invertase, urease, and catalase activities to varying degrees. Among the three types of hyperaccumulator straw, S. photeinocarpum straw was the most effective to increase Cd accumulation in loquat seedlings. Therefore, this material has the potential to increase the phytoremediation capacity of loquat seedlings in Cd-contaminated orchards.

Pot and field experiments were conducted to study the effects of interspecies rootstocks on cadmium (Cd) accumulation characteristics of the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum postgrafting generation plants. Four treatments (ungrafted and S. photeinocarpum seedlings grafted on the rootstocks of eggplant, potato, and tomato) were utilized in the present study. In the 2 pot experiments, eggplant and potato reduced biomass of S. photeinocarpum postgrafting generation plants, whereas tomato increased shoot biomass compared with the control (ungrafted seedlings). Compared with ungrafted seedlings, tomato increased and eggplant decreased Cd contents in shoots of S. photeinocarpum postgrafting generation. Only tomato increased Cd extraction by shoots of S. photeinocarpum postgrafting generation compared with ungrafted seedlings. In the field experiment, only tomato increased shoot Cd content of S. photeinocarpum postgrafting generation by 8.31% and shoot Cd extraction by 9.30% compared with ungrafted seedlings. Therefore, use of tomato as rootstock could enhance the ability of S. photeinocarpum postgrafting generation plants to remediate Cd-contaminated soil.
