OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of tea polyphenols (TP) for regulating NLRP3 inflammasomes and alleviating acute lung injury in septic mice. METHODS: Sixty C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned into sham-operated, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and CLP +TP treatment groups, and survival of the mice was recorded after modeling in each group. The lung wet/dry weight ratio and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were determined, and lung injury of the mice was evaluated using HE staining and acute lung injury score. The expressions of IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-6, NLRP3, caspase-1 p10, ASC, MPO, and caspase-8 in the lung tissue were detected using ELISA, Western blotting, or immunohistochemical staining. MDA and H2O2 levels in the lungs were detected to evaluate the level of oxidative stress. Immunofluorescence assay was used to investigate the co-localization of NLRP3 and NOX4. RESULTS: The postoperative mortality rate at 72 h, lung wet/dry weight ratio, MPO level and acute lung injury scores were significantly lower in CLP+TP group than in CLP group (P < 0.05). Treatment with TP significantly reduced the expressions of NLRP3-related inflammatory factors (P < 0.05) and lowered MDA and H2O2 levels in the lung tissue of the septic mice (P < 0.05). Immunofluorescence co-staining showed a lower level of NOX4 and NLRP3 co-localization in CLP+TP group than in CLP group. CONCLUSION: TP inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome-associated inflammation to alleviate CLP-induced acute lung injury in mice through a regulatory mechanism that inhibits NOX4 expression and reduces oxidative stress in the lung tissue.

Immune homeostasis is a steady immune state that not only protects the host from pathogens but also prevents the emergence of pathological self-reactive immune cells. The disruption of immune homeostasis leads to the development of various diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. An emerging paradigm for the treatment of these diseases with dysfunctional immune systems is the restoration and maintenance of immune homeostasis. However, currently available drugs exert a unidirectional influence on immunity whereby they either augment or inhibit it. This strategy is associated with the drawback of potential adverse effects arising from uncontrolled activation or suppression of the immune system. Fortunately, evidence suggests that acupuncture can bidirectionally regulate the immune system to maintain immune homeostasis. In cases of immunosuppressive diseases (e.g. cancer), acupuncture has an enhancing effect on immunity. Conversely, in autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), acupuncture has been observed to have an immunosuppressive effect, which helps restore normal immune tolerance. However, there is no publication systematically summarizing the bidirectional regulatory effects of acupuncture on the immune system in the literature. Here, our review provides a comprehensive overview of the various mechanisms through which acupuncture modulates the immune system in a bidirectional manner. These mechanisms include the augmentation of NK and CD8+ T cell function, as well as the restoration of Th1/Th2, Th17/Treg and M1/M2 balance. Thus, we propose the concept that acupuncture has the potential to alleviate illnesses through the facilitation of immune normalization. Moreover, we further highlight the therapeutic potential of acupuncture.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanisms that mediate the anti-inflammatory activity of Eurycoma longifolia. METHODS: Kunming mouse models of xylene-induced ear swelling and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute pneumonia were used to compare the anti- inflammatory activities of aqueous and ethanol extracts of Eurycoma longifolia. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS was used to identify the chemical composition in the ethanol extract of Eurycoma longifolia, based on which the potential antiinflammatory targets of Eurycoma longifolia were screened using the databases including SwissADME, SwissTargetPrediction, and Genecards. The String database was used to generate the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and Cytoscape was used for network topology analysis and screening the core targets. The enrichment of the core targets was analyzed using Metascape database, the core components and targets were docked with Autodock software, and the docking results were visualized using Pymol software. In a RAW264.7 cell model of LPS-induced inflammation, the Griess reagent was used to measure NO level, and Western blotting was performed to detect the expression levels of MAPK1, JAK2, and STAT3 proteins to verify the anti- inflammatory mechanism of Eurycoma longifolia. RESULTS: The ethanol extract (75%) of Eurycoma longifolia (ELE) was the active site, which contained a total of 37 chemical components. These chemical compounds and diseases had 541 targets, involving the JAK/STAT3, cAMP and other signaling pathways. Twelve indicator components were identified, which all showed good results of molecular docking with two core targets involved in the signaling pathways. In the cell validation experiment, treatment of the cells with low-, medium-, and high-dose ELE significantly reduced NO release in the cells, and ELE at the medium dose significantly decreased the cellular expressions of JAK2 and STAT3. CONCLUSION: The anti-inflammatory activity of Eurycoma longifolia is attributed primarily to its active ingredients bitter lignin and alkaloids, which may regulate the JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway by targeting JAK2 and STAT3.

Silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust. The disease is characterized by early lung inflammation and late irreversible pulmonary fibrosis. Here we report the effect of Baicalin, a main flavonoid compound from the roots of Chinese herbal medicine Huang Qin on silicosis in a rat model. Results showed Baicalin (50 or 100 mg/kg/day) can mitigate the silica-induced lung inflammation and reduce the harm of alveolar structure and the blue region of collagen fibers in rat lung at 28 days after administration. At the same time, Baicalin also diminished the level of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) in lung tissues. The protein expression of collagen I (Col-1), alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and vimentin were down-regulated while E-cadherin (E-cad) was increased in Baicalin-treated rats. In addition, the Toll Like Receptor 4 (TLR4)/ nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) pathway was enabled at 28 days after silica infusion, and the treatment of Baicalin diminished the expression of TLR4 and NF-?B in the lungs of rat with silicosis. These results suggested that Baicalin inhibited the pulmonary inflammatory and fibrosis in a rat model of silicosis, which could be attributed to inhibition of the TLR4/NF-kappaB pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of deficiency syndrome (YDS) by analyzing the liver metabolomic characteristics of three different deficiency rat models METHODS: Following the TCM etiology, for clinical features and pathological manifestations of modern medicine, three kinds of animal models of deficiency were induced and replicated. Totally 48 Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats were randomly divided into blank group, irritation induced model group, Fuzi-Ganjiang induced model group, and thyroxine-reserpine induced model group. After successful development of model, the ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was carried out to detect metabolites in each group. The metabolites of rat liver were analyzed for the characteristics of their biomarkers. The pathway enrichment analysis and metabolic network construction were performed through various online databases including Metabolite Biology Role, Human Metabolome Database, MetaboAnalyst, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. RESULTS: The SD rats in the experimental group showed symptoms like less weight gain, reduced diet and water intake, high body temperature, increased liver and kidney indexes, and abnormal liver and kidney tissue morphology. Moreover, the rats showed high increased levels of serum cyclic adenosine monophosphate, estradiol, alanine transaminase, and aspartate aminotransferase and decreased levels of cyclic guanosinc monophosphate and testosterone. We found four key interrelated metabolic pathways in the liver tissue metabolomics, including the biosynthesis of pantothenic acid and coenzyme A, and metabolism of alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and sphingolipid. CONCLUSION: The liver and kidney YDS is closely related to the biosynthesis of pantothenic acid and CoA and abnormal metabolism of α-linolenic acid, glycerophospholipid, and sphingolipid in SD rats.

Objective: To evaluate the interventional effects of music therapy on pain and anxiety of burn patients in wound dressing change. Methods: The meta-analysis method was adopted. Databases including China National Knowledge Internet, Wanfang Database, and VIP database were retrieved with the search terms in Chinese version of ", , /, /", and PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were retrieved with the search terms in English version of "music, burn, dressing change/wound dressing, pain/ache/sore" to obtain the publicly published randomized controlled trials on the application of music therapy for wound dressing change in burn patients from the establishment of each database to May 2021. The outcome indexes included pain score/percentage and anxiety score after dressing change. Rev Man 5.4 and Stata 14.0 statistical software were used to conduct a meta-analysis of eligible studies. Results: A total of 520 burn patients from 7 studies were included, including 260 patients in music therapy group who received music therapy and 260 patients in routine dressing change group who received routine dressing change. The bias risk of all the 7 included studies was uncertain. Compared with those in routine dressing change group, the pain percentages (relative risk=0.06, 95% confidence interval=0.01-0.41, P<0.01) and pain scores after dressing change (standardized mean difference (SMD)=-0.91, 95% confidence interval=-1.61--0.22, P<0.05) of patients in music therapy group were significantly lower. Subgroup analysis showed that music type and timing of intervention might be the source of heterogeneity in pain scores after dressing change. The anxiety scores of patients in music therapy group were significantly lower than those in routine dressing change group (SMD=-0.64, 95% confidence interval=-1.09--0.19, P<0.01). There was no publication bias in pain or anxiety scores after dressing change. Conclusions: Music therapy can relieve the pain and anxiety of burn patients during dressing change.

Eutrophication remains the most widespread water quality impairment globally and is commonly associated with excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs to surface waters from agricultural runoff. In southern Ontario, Canada, increases in nitrate (NO3-N) concentrations as well as declines in total phosphorus (TP) concentration have been observed over the past four decades at predominantly agricultural watersheds, where major expansions in row crop production at the expense of pasture and forage have occurred. This study used a space-for-time approach to test whether 'agricultural intensification', herein defined as increases in row crop area (primarily corn-soybean-winter wheat rotation) at the expense of mixed livestock and forage/pasture, could explain increases in NO3-N and declines in TP over time. We found a clear, positive relationship between the extent of row crop area within watersheds and NO3-N losses, such that tributary NO3-N concentrations and export were predicted to increase by ~0.4 mg/L and ~130 kg/km2 respectively, for every 10% expansion in row crop area. There was also a significant positive relationship between row crop area and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) concentration, but not export, and TP was not correlated with any form of landcover. Instead, TP was strongly associated with storm events, and was more sensitive to hydrologic condition than to landcover. These results suggest that pervasive shifts toward tile-drained corn and soybean production could explain increases in tributary NO3-N levels in this region. The relationship between changes in agriculture and P is less clear, but the significant association between dissolved P and row crop area suggests that increased adoption of reduced tillage practices and tile drainage may enhance subsurface losses of P.

Enhanced postruminal supply of methionine (Met) during the peripartal period alters protein abundance of insulin, AA, and antioxidant signaling pathways in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). Whether SAT is directly responsive to supply of Met and can induce molecular alterations is unknown. Our objective was to examine whether enhanced Met supply during an oxidative stress challenge in vitro alters insulin, AA, inflammation, and antioxidant signaling-related protein networks. Four late-lactation Holstein cows (average 27.0 kg of milk per day) were used for SAT collection. Tissue was incubated in duplicate for 4 h in a humidified incubator with 5% CO2 at 37°C according to the following experimental design: control medium with an "ideal" profile of essential AA (CTR; Lys:Met 2.9:1), CTR plus 100 µM H2O2 (HP), or CTR with greater Met supply plus 100 µM H2O2 (HPMET; Lys:Met 2.5:1). Molecular targets associated with insulin signaling, lipolysis, antioxidant nuclear factor, erythroid 2 like 2 (NFE2L2), inflammation, and AA metabolism were determined through reverse-transcription quantitative PCR and western blotting. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc.). Among proteins associated with insulin signaling, compared with CTR, HP led to lower abundance of phosphorylated AKT serine/threonine kinase (p-AKT) and solute carrier family 2 member 4 (SLC2A4; insulin-induced glucose transporter). Although incubation with HPMET restored abundance of SLC2A4 to levels in the CTR and upregulated abundance of fatty acid synthase (FASN) and phosphorylated 5'-prime-AMP-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK), it did not alter p-AKT, which remained similar to HP. Among proteins associated with AA signaling, compared with CTR, challenge with HP led to lower abundance of phosphorylated mechanistic target of rapamycin (p-MTOR), and HPMET did not restore abundance to CTR levels. Among inflammation-related targets studied, incubation with HPMET led to greater protein abundance of nuclear factor kappa B subunit p65 (NFKB-RELA). The response in NFKB observed with HPMET was associated with a marked upregulation of the antioxidant transcription regulator NFE2L2 and the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1). No effects of treatment were detected for mRNA abundance of proinflammatory cytokines or antioxidant enzymes, underscoring the importance of post-transcriptional regulation. Overall, data indicated that short-term challenge with H2O2 was particularly effective in reducing insulin and AA signaling. Although a greater supply of Met had little effect on those pathways, it seemed to restore the protein abundance of the insulin-induced glucose transporter. Overall, the concomitant upregulation of key inflammation and antioxidant signaling proteins when a greater level of Met was supplemented to oxidant-challenged SAT highlighted the potential role of this AA in regulating the inflammatory response and oxidant status. Further studies should be conducted to assess the role of postruminal supply of Met and other AA in the regulation of immune, antioxidant, and metabolic systems in peripartal cow adipose tissue.

Secondary lower extremity lymphedema is a common complication of treatment for gynecological cancers. Conservative therapy plays an important role in the treatment of patients with secondary lower extremity lymphedema; in particular, complex decongestive therapy (CDT) has been recognized as an effective nonoperative technique for these patients. But CDT therapy for secondary lower extremity lymphedema remains a problem in China because this technique and its effectiveness have not achieved widespread use and popularity. Our goal was to assess effects of CDT in patients with secondary lower limb lymphedema after treatment for gynecological cancers. The retrospective study consisted of 60 patients who were treated with 20 sessions of CDT. Assessments included objective changes in limb circumference, degree of LE, imaging features, and incidence of erysipelas before and after CDT treatment. We found that CDT can effectively improve lymph stasis and promote backflow, and decrease circumference, interstitial fluid content, and incidence of erysipelas of lymphedematous lower limb. Our results demonstrate that CDT is an effective treatment method for patients with secondary lower limb lymphedema following treatment for gynecologic cancers. This technique should be more widely utilized and popularized in China to improve the quality of life of millions of patients with secondary lower limb lymphedema.

Used during an oil spill to minimise the formation of an oil slick, dispersants have negative biological effects on marine model organisms. However, no study has investigated the impacts of dispersants on adult sponge individuals. Here, we examine the effects of water accommodated oil fraction (WAF - oil in seawater), chemically enhanced WAF (CEWAF - oil and dispersant in seawater) and Benzo[A]Pyrene on sponge Halichondria panicea at physiological and molecular levels. Sponge clearance rate decreased sharply when exposed to WAF and CEWAF but the oil loading at which the clearance rate was reduced by 50% (ED50) was 39-fold lower in CEWAF than in WAF. Transcriptomic analysis revealed a homogenous molecular response with the greatest number of differentially expressed genes identified in CEWAF samples (1,461 genes). Specifically, genes involved in stress responses were up-regulated. This study presents evidence that the use of dispersants should be considered carefully in areas where sponges are present.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are important in the development and prognosis of prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the functions and mechanism of lnc-SNHG14 in prostate cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) or Western blot (WB) were performed to detect mRNA expressions of SNHG14 and miR-5590-3p, and the protein levels of Yin Yang-1 (YY1) in prostate cancer tissues, adjacent tissues, and cancer cell lines. The correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlations between SNHG14, miR-5590-3p, and YY1. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to analyze the overall survival for prostate cancer patients. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was performed to measure cell proliferation ability and flow cytometry assay was used to detect cell apoptotic rate. Besides, transwell assay was used to measure cell invasion ability. In addition, WB was performed to measure protein expressions in prostate cancer cell lines. Finally, Luciferase reporter assay was performed to verify the binding sites between SNHG14 and miR-5590-3p, miR-5590-3p, and YY1. RESULTS: The results showed that SNHG14 was significantly increased in prostate cancer tissues and prostate cancer cell lines, which were related with advanced stage and poor diagnosis for prostate cancer patients. MiR-5590-3p was reduced in prostate cancer tissues and cell lines, which were negatively correlated with SNHG14. YY1 was found to be increased in prostate cancer tissues, which was negatively correlated with miR-5590-3p and positively correlated with SNHG14. Furthermore, SNHG14 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, invasion, and promoted cell apoptosis in DU145 cells. In addition, protein expressions of Cyclin D1, Bcl-2, and N-cadherin were repressed, and the levels of Bax, Cleaved Caspase-3, and E-cadherin were increased. Besides, miR-5590-3p inhibition promoted cell proliferation and invasion, and inhibited apoptosis in DU145 cells. Importantly, Luciferase reporter assay proved that SNHG14 could directly sponge with miR-5590-3p, which could bind with YY1 and regulate the functions of cancer cell. Finally, we proved that SNHG14 regulated cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, and invasion via miR-5590-3p/ YY1 axis in prostate cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Above all, we found that SNHG14 was increased in prostate cancer patients, which was related with future diagnosis for prostate cancer patients. Of note, we discovered that SNHG14 could promote cell proliferation, invasion, and repress cell apoptosis via miR-5590-3p/YY1 axis in prostate cancer, which might provide a new target for treating prostate cancer.

Objective: To explore the relationship between selenium and the risk for oral cancer. Methods: We performed a case-control study in 325 cases of newly diagnosed primary oral cancer from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University and 650 controls from the same hospital and community. Unconditional logistic regression and stratification analyses were used to explore the association between selenium and oral cancer. Adjusted OR and corresponding 95%CI were calculated. The analyses on multiple interactions between selenium and smoking or drinking status, and fruit or fish intake frequencies were conducted. Results: The level of serum selenium was 112.42 (80.98-145.06) µg/L in the case group, which was lower than 164.85 (144.44-188.53) µg/L in control group, the difference was statistical significant (P<0.01). There was a negative correlation between serum selenium level and the risk for oral cancer regardless of smoking and drinking status, and fruits and fish intake frequencies (P<0.05). There were multiple interactions between serum selenium level and smoking or drinking status, and fruit and fish intakes. Conclusions: The high level of serum selenium is a protective factor for the incidence of oral cancer, and serum selenium has multiple interactions with smoking or drinking status, and fruit and fish intakes. Therefore, reducing tobacco use and alcohol consumption and increasing the intakes of fruit and fish can reduce the risk for oral cancer to some extent.

OBJECTIVES: Irrigation is the cornerstone of treating skeletal infection by eliminating pathogens in wounds. A previous study shows that irrigation with normal saline (0.9%) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) could improve the removal of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) compared with normal saline (NS) alone. However, it is still unclear whether EDTA solution is effective against infection with drug-resistant bacteria. METHODS: We established three wound infection models (skin defect, bone-exposed, implant-exposed) by inoculating the wounds with a variety of representative drug-resistant bacteria including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC), multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MRPA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MRAB), multidrug-resistant Enterobacter (MRE), and multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis (MRPM). Irrigation and debridement were repeated until the wound culture became negative. The operating times required to eliminate pathogens in wounds were compared through survival analysis. RESULTS: Compared with other groups (NS, castile soap, benzalkonium chloride, and bacitracin), the EDTA group required fewer debridement and irrigation operations to achieve pathogen eradication in all three models of wound infection. CONCLUSION: Irrigation with EDTA solution was more effective than the other irrigation fluids used in the treatment of wound infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens.Cite this article: Z. Cancer is the most common cause of mortality worldwide. Although recent advances of multiple modality cancer management have significantly improved the cure and control rates, a significant proportion of patients are still refractory to the standard and available treatments. Early initiation of palliative care can reduce cancer suffering, improve health-related quality of life and possibly prolong survival. It also allows patients and their caretakers to perceive the trajectory of their cancer, so that better and advanced care planning can be contemplated and implemented. The traditional beliefs and perceptions of cancer also differ significantly between the East and the West, which may also affect the preferential approach to palliative care. This review provides an overview of palliative care services in Hong Kong, as compared with other parts of the world. In addition, we shall also explore how cancer perceptions affect the decision-making on palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Previous meta-analysis showed an inverse association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality. However, the relationship between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption and all-cause mortality is inconsistent. We aimed to identify and review the published evidence updating the association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality and, furthermore, to investigate the association of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption and all-cause mortality. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed and Web of Science for studies published up to 9 November 2017. Cohort studies in which authors reported relative risks (RRs) of all-cause mortality for at least three levels of coffee consumption were eligible. Random-effects models were used to estimate the pooled RR of all-cause mortality with coffee consumption. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the dose-response association. RESULTS: We included 21 cohort study articles (10 103 115 study participants and 240 303 deaths). We found a nonlinear association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality (Pnonlinearity  < 0.001). Compared with no or rare coffee consumption, with a consumption of 3 cups day-1 , the risk of all-cause mortality might reduce 13% (RR = 0.87; 95% confidence interval = 0.84-0.89). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study provide quantitative data suggesting that coffee consumption plays a role in reducing the risk of all-cause mortality. Similar inverse associations are found for caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee.

The study aimed to determine the effects of methionine hydroxy analog chelate zinc on the tibia quality, mineral deposit, apparent retention of nutrients, and liver metallothionein (MT) expression level of aged laying hens. A total of 960 layers (Hy-Line Grey, 57 wk old) were randomly assigned into 4 groups, and each group had 8 replicates of 30 hens. During the first 2 wk, groups were fed a basal diet without extra zinc (Zn: 35.08 mg/kg). During the ensuing 14 wk, 4 levels of Zn (inorganic Zn: 80 mg/kg; organic Zn: 20, 40, 80 mg/kg) were added to the diet. The results indicated that both the Zn source and level did influence tibia strength and calcium (Ca) and Zn concentrations of tibia (P < 0.05), whereas there were no differences in the copper (Cu) and phosphorus (P) concentrations of the tibia and the tibia length (P > 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation with 40 or 80 mg/kg of organic Zn showed higher Zn and Ca concentrations in the tibia and higher tibia strength. The Cu concentration in the liver showed no difference among the 4 treatments, whereas the Zn concentration in the liver increased with the increasing Zn level. The apparent retention of P, iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) was not affected by the Zn level or source (P > 0.05). However, the organic Zn group increased the apparent retention of Cu, Zn, Ca, crude protein (CP), and energy, and the group supplemented with 40 or 80 mg/kg of organic Zn obtained significant effects (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation with 40 or 80 mg/kg organic Zn increased the MT mRNA expression of the liver at week 72, whereas 20 mg/kg of organic Zn decreased it (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study suggested that an optimum dietary (40 mg/kg) organic Zn level plays a key role in promoting the apparent retention of minerals and nutrients, trace element deposit, and MT mRNA expression.

Suppurative tonsillitis (ST) is a common respiratory disease in children. This study aims to investigate the association between calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg)/phosphorus (P) and the risk of onset of suppuration in tonsillitis in children. Seventy children with ST and 61 age- and sex-matched children with non-ST were enrolled in this study. The association between Ca/Mg/P and suppuration risk in tonsillitis was investigated. The relationship between Ca/Mg/P and the potential risk factors for ST were also studied. White blood cell (WBC), platelet (PLT), c-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) levels were significantly higher in the ST group than those in the non-ST group (p less than 0.05). Mg and P levels were significantly lower in the ST group than those in the non-ST group (p less than 0.05). There was no obvious difference in Ca level between the ST group and the non-ST group (p=0.762). A significantly negative association between P and PCT was noted (r=-0.236, p=0.035). The results indicated that Mg/P disorder may be associated with the susceptibility to suppuration in children with tonsillitis, inflammatory indexes may reflect this risk.

Herpetospermum caudigerum (H. caudigerum; HC), popularly known as “Sejimeiduo” in Tibet, it is widely used in Tibetan traditional medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, liver and colic diseases. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of H. caudigerum extract (HCE) on suppressing liver injury induced by carbon tetra chloride (CCl4). For this purpose, we used CCl4 to induce acute liver injury in mouse model. The protective effects of HCE against liver injury were evaluated by biochemical parameters, histopathological and immunohistochemical staining. The results showed that the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly increased with the increasing dose of HCE as compared to the CCl4-treated group (p less than 0.01); while AST and ALT levels in serum, MDA and MPO in liver were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. The histopathology showed that HCE treatment promoted the recovery of histopathological changes in liver in a dose-dependent way. Meanwhile, there was a higher expression of caspase-3 and NF-κB in the nucleus of several liver cells in the CCl4-induced group, and a low expression of caspase-3 and NF-κB were found with the increasing dose of HCE. Therefore, the present study suggests that HCE is a potent hepatoprotective agent that can treat acute liver injury and this ability may be attributed towards its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential.

The study aimed to determine the effects of methionine hydroxyl analog chelated zinc (MHA-Zn) on laying performance, eggshell quality and mineral deposits, and the activities of Zn-containing enzymes on aged laying hens. A total of 960 layers (Hy-Line Grey, 57 wk old) were fed a basal diet (Zn: 35.08 mg/kg) without extra zinc for 2 wk. During the ensuing 14 wk, birds were randomly divided into 4 groups according to body weight and laying rate, with 8 replicates per treatment, and each group had 8 replicates of 30 hens. Four levels of Zn (ZnSO4: 80 mg/kg; MHA-Zn: 20, 40, 80 mg/kg) were added to the diet, respectively. The results shown that dietary Zn did not affect laying rate, average egg weight, average daily feed intake, or feed conversion ratio (P > 0.05); however, compared to the inorganic group, dietary supplementation with 40 or 80 mg/kg MHA-Zn decreased broken egg rate significantly in the whole period (P < 0.05), while significantly increased eggshell weight in week 62 to 72, eggshell thickness and eggshell strength in wk 66 to 72, eggshell weight percent and eggshell density in week 62 to 72 (P < 0.05). Besides, dietary supplementation with different sources and levels of Zn did not affect ash concentration of eggshell (P > 0.05), whereas dietary supplementation with 80 mg/kg MHA-Zn improved the Zn and Ca concentrations of eggshells and carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity of liver, and 40 mg/kg MHA-Zn increased Zn concentration of liver (P < 0.05). Moreover, no significant differences in alkaline phosphatase activity were observed among the treatment groups (P > 0.05). Therefore, dietary supplementation with 40 mg/kg MHA-Zn can improve eggshell quality by promoting Ca deposition and CA activity.

Objective: To clarify the situation of the detection of upper gastrointestinal cancer and precancerous lesions in the Feicheng city and discuss the possible influencing factors. Methods: A cluster sampling method was used to determine the participants. A unified questionnaire was used to investigate the basic information including history of alcohol intake, smoking and chinese tea, as well as other eating habits, medical history of digestive tract and cancer. Endoscopy was used to to screen the patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer and precancerous lesions. Influential factors were explored by non-conditional logistic regression model. Results: 911 of 7 291participants were positive, and the total detection rate was 12.49%. The total positive detection rate of male and female was 17.94% and 8.71%, respectively (P<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the sex (OR=0.527, 95%CI: 0.440-0.631), age (OR=2.037, 95%CI: 1.849-2.245), smoking (OR=1.240, 95%CI: 1.014-1.516) and alcohol consumption (OR=1.232, 95%CI: 1.012-1.500) , meat and protein intake (OR=0.794, 95%CI: 0.638-0.987) and drink tea (OR=1.233, 95%CI: 1.056-1.440) may be influencing factors of the total detection rate of upper gastrointestinal cancer and precancerosis. Conclusions: In Feicheng city, intake of meat and protein is the protective factor of the upper gastrointestinal cancer and precancerous lesions. Men, aged, smoking, drinking and tea will increase the risk of upper gastrointestinal cancer and precancerous lesions.
