Ulcerative colitis (UC) is regarded as a recurring inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, for which treatment approaches remain notably limited. In this study, we demonstrated that ginseng polysaccharides (GPs) could alleviate the development of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC as reflected by the ameliorated pathological lesions in the colon. GPs strikingly suppressed the expression levels of multiple inflammatory cytokines, as well as significantly inhibited the infiltration of inflammatory cells. Microbiota-dependent investigations by virtue of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, antibiotic treatment and fecal microbiota transplantation illustrated that GPs treatment prominently restored intestinal microbial balance predominantly through modulating the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. Additionally, GPs remarkably influenced the levels of microbial tryptophan metabolites, diminished the intestinal permeability and strengthened intestinal barrier integrity via inhibiting the 5-HT/HTR3A signaling pathway. Taken together, the promising therapeutic potential of GPs on the development of UC predominantly hinges on the capacity to suppress the expression of inflammatory cytokines as well as to influence Lactobacillus and microbial tryptophan metabolites.

In the research, iron oxides-biochar composites (ALBC) were prepared from pristine biochar modified by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) and pyrolyzed at 500 °C and 700 °C in order to remove antimonite (Sb(III)) and antimonate (Sb(V)) from water. The results indicated that biochar prepared at 500 °C and 700 °C (ALBC500 and ALBC700) were loaded with Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, respectively. In bacterial modification systems, ferrous iron and total iron concentrations decreased continuously. The pH values of bacterial modification systems including ALBC500 increased first and then decreased to a stable state, while the pH values of bacterial modification systems with ALBC700 continued to decrease. The bacterial modification systems can facilitate the formation of more jarosites by A. ferrooxidans. ALBC500 had optimal adsorbing capacities for Sb(III) (18.81 mg·g-1) and Sb(V) (14.64 mg·g-1). The main mechanisms of Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption by ALBC were electrostatic interaction and pore filling.

BACKGROUND: Acute cerebral infarction (ACI) is a common medical emergency. This study is the first systematic review of the use of Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) injection in the treatment of ACI. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of NBP injection on the inflammatory response, oxidative stress response and vascular endothelial function in patients with acute ACI. The objective is to provide reference for clinical application. METHODS: From the establishment of the database until August 2022, we systematically searched EMbase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang Database. RCTs and retrospective studies were included in this study, and the results that qualified for inclusion were screened by 2 researchers and cross-checked. After the relevant data were extracted, a meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 3307 patients with ACI from 34 studies were analyzed. The meta-analysis showed that the C-reactive protein levels in the NBP combined group were effectively reduced compared with those in the control group (MD = -3.75, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI] [-4.95, -2.56], P < .00001). Based on comparison with the control group, it is evident that combination treatment with NBP is more effective than control group in reducing the oxidative stress response of ACI (MD[superoxide dismutase levels] = 22.16, 95% CI [14.20,30.11], P < .00001; MD[malondialdehyde levels] = -1.97, 95% CI [-2.62, -1.32], P < .00001). Comparison with the control group shows that combination treatment with NBP is more effective in improving vascular endothelial function in ACI patients (MD[vascular endothelial growth factor levels] = 71.44, 95% CI [41.22, 101.66], P < .00001; MD[endothelin-1 levels] = -11.47, 95% CI [-17.39, -5.55], P = .0001; MD[nitric oxide levels] = 9.54, 95% CI [8.39, 10.68], P < .00001) than control group. The NBP combined group also showed a greater reduction in cerebral infarct volume (CIV) and cerebral infarct size (CIS) of ACI (MD[CIV] = -1.52, 95% CI [-2.23, -0.81], P < .0001; MD[CIS] = -2.79, 95% CI [-3.65, -1.94], P < .00001). The NBP combined group did not show an increase in the incidence of adverse reactions compared with the control group (odds ratio = 1.06, 95% CI [0.73, 1.53], P = .77). CONCLUSION: In summary, the use of NBP in combination with control group for ACI can reduce the degree of nerve damage, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, improve vascular endothelial function, and reduce CIS and CIV in ACI patients, without increasing the incidence of clinical adverse events.

Background: Panax ginseng C. A. Mey (ginseng) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used for the treatment of nervous system disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the pharmacological mechanisms of ginseng involved in AD have not been systematically investigated. Here, a network pharmacology approach was adopted to explore the effective components, core targets, and key pathways of ginseng against AD. Methods: TCMSP database was used to screen the active ingredients of ginseng. Prediction of the targets of ginseng and AD-related genes was performed using online public databases. "Compound-Target," "Compound-Target-Disease," "Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI)," "Compound-Target-Pathway," and "Compound-Target-GO-Pathway" networks were constructed with Cytoscape 3.7.2 software. Gene Ontology (GO) function annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment were performed by using the DAVID database. Results: A total of 22 bioactive compounds were identified from ginseng, and 481 targets of ginseng and 763 AD-related targets were obtained from public databases. The PPI network screened out 19 hub genes of ginseng against AD. According to GO function enrichment, ginseng influenced cell proliferation, death, the nitric oxide biosynthetic process, hypoxia response, and synaptic transmission. Neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, serotonergic synapse, calcium signaling, cAMP signaling, FoxO signaling, Ras signaling, and PI3K-AKT signaling were among the most key regulatory pathways. The compound-target-GO-route network found EGFR, MAPK1, MAPK14, AKT1, CASP3, and PRKACA as key genes, with PI3K-AKT signaling being the most important pathway for ginseng's anti-AD activity. Conclusion: Ginseng exerts neuroprotective effects in AD patients through multicomponent, multitarget, and multipathway modes, providing novel insight into the pharmacological and experimental research on ginseng against AD.

Multifunctional core-shell hybrids formed by integration of metal-organic framework (MOF) and functional materials have attracted extensive attention as promising theranostic nanoplatforms due to their combined novel properties and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Recently, the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) laser-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) as compared to the NIR-I(700-950 nm) laser-induced PTT has displayed improved therapeutic effects owing to its merits that include deeper tissue penetration and increased maximum permissible exposure. Herein, a novel core-shell hollow copper sulfide@metal-organic framework (HCuS@MIL-100) has been successfully fabricated by a layer-by-layer technique for the first time and their collective theranostic effects are investigated in vitro and in vivo. In this platform, the inner HCuS was applied as the NIR-II photothermal agent with excellent NIR-II absorption feature, leading to impressive photothermal effects under irradiation by 1064 nm light. With MIL-100 as the shell, HCuS@MIL-100 not only displayed optimal biocompatibility but also presented superior T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability. In the current study multifunctional hollow core-shell HCuS@MIL-100 are fabricated for the MRI-guided PTT. This study also offers a facile and effective strategy for the development of novel theranostic platforms with high efficiency through the integration of MOFs and functional materials.

In this study, fluoride (F) was stabilized and soluble components, namely phosphate (P), K, Ca, Cr, Mn, and Pb, were extracted from phosphorus slag (PS) by using aluminum sulfate (AS) synergistic electrokinetic. PHREEQC simulation was used to determine the occurrence form of each ion in the PS. The mechanisms by which various electrokinetic treatment methods affected conductivity and pH distribution were carefully investigated. Electrokinetic treatment increased P concentration of the anode chamber from 22.7 mg/L to 63.39 mg/L, whereas K concentration increased from 15.26 mg/L to 93.44 mg/L. After AS-enhanced electrokinetic treatments, the concentrations of the different components were as follows: P, 131.66 mg/L; K, 198.2 mg/L; and Ca, 331.3 mg/L. The removal rate of soluble P in PS slices increased to 80.88% by 1.5 V/cm of treatment, and it increased to 94.04% after AS enhancement treatment. For water-soluble F, the removal rate from the PS slices in the anode region was 86.03%, decreasing F concentration in the electrode chamber to 9.57 × 10-3 mg/L. Different extraction efficiencies and stability levels of each component in the PS were regulated at various electrode regions by using different processes such as electromigration, electro-osmotic flow, flocculation, and precipitation. Good results can be obtained if fluoride is solidified concurrently with the removal or recovery of P, K, Ca, and other elements using 2%-4% AS enhanced electrokinetic treatment. Furthermore, CaSO4·2H2O whiskers were produced in the electrode regions when AS content was 6%. The findings of this study indicated that the AS synergistic electrokinetic method is suitable for stabilizing F and removing heavy metals from PS, thus providing a promising technology for recycling valuable components such as P, K, Ca, and Sr and for the simultaneous production of CaSO4·2H2O whiskers. This study provides insights for developing novel technologies for the clean treatment and high-value utilization of PS.

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is one of the common postoperative complications in patients with rectal cancer, which seriously affects their postoperative recovery and quality of life (QoL). Electroacupuncture therapy is one of the characteristic therapies of traditional Chinese medicine. There are few reports on the prevention and treatment of LARS by electroacupuncture therapy. AIM: To explore the clinical effectiveness of electroacupuncture in managing rectal cancer patients with postoperative LARS. METHODS: A total of 50 patients with LARS after rectal cancer surgery were retrospectively selected as the research subjects. According to the treatment methods, they were divided into an observation group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). During the four-week treatment period, the control group received standard defecation function training, while the observation group received electroacupuncture care and traditional defecation function training. The anal pressure index (which includes anal resting pressure, anal systolic pressure, and maximum tolerable volume), European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QoL C30 (QLQ-C30) score, LARS Scale (LARSS) score, Wexner anal incontinence scale score, Xu Zhongfa five-item 10-point scale score, and the occurrence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. RESULTS: The experimental group showed considerably enhanced LARSS scores compared to those in the control group after four weeks of treatment. In the first week, second week, and fourth week, the LARSS score and Wexner anal incontinence scale score decreased, and the Xu Zhong method five-item 10-point scale score increased, with significant differences (P < 0.05). The experimental group showed substantial improvements in anal resting pressure, anal systolic pressure, and maximum tolerance volume after undergoing 4 wk of therapy in the untreated group (P < 0.05). The experimental group's QLQ-C30 score on the EORTC QoL questionnaire was higher than that of the control group during the 1st, 2nd, and 4th wk (P < 0.05). No significant variation between the groups in the frequency of adverse reactions (P > 0.05) was observed. CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture positively impacted LARS following rectal cancer surgery, effectively improving clinical symptoms and anal pressure indicators and patients' standard of life.

Dry mature pericarp of Citrus reticulata "Chachi" (PCR), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Chachiensis, is a traditional Chinese medicine that displays characteristics of different usage at different harvest times in clinical use. The corresponding changes in the bioactive components in PCR from different harvest times remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, broadly targeted metabolomics technology was used to compare the differences in bioactive components among pericarps of PCR, which are the raw material of PCR at different growth stages. In the results, 210 kinds of flavonoid metabolites were detected. The content of hesperidin in red PCR harvested in December was higher than that in Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (CRPV) and reddish PCR harvested from July to November. Furthermore, the content of nobiletin, tangeretin, and 3,3',4',5,6,7,8-heptamethoxyflavone in CRPV from July to September was higher than that in the PCR harvested at other times. In addition, the result of cluster analysis and PCA showed that CRPV harvested from July to September had an obvious grouping pattern with the reddish PCR and the red PCR harvested from October to December. Differential metabolites in six comparison groups (A1 vs. A6, A1 vs. A2, A2 vs. A3, A3 vs. A4, A4 vs. A5, A5 vs. A6) were 67, 48, 14, 51, 42, and 40, respectively. The common differential metabolite of four comparison groups was 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavone (A1 vs. A2, A2 vs. A3, A3 vs. A4, A4 vs. A5). All the flavonoid differential metabolites screened were enriched in 16 metabolic pathways. Moreover, the results of the evaluation of the total antioxidant capacity indicated that CRPV in August was a suitable raw material for the production of antioxidants. Through molecular docking, the content of potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 components in the PCR in October was higher than that in the PCR in other periods. These results further proved that PCR at different harvest times was endowed with different efficacy and usage due to the difference in the accumulation of bioactive components.

BACKGROUND: Ginseng, an important traditional Chinese medicine and a new resource food, has two production modes: farmland ginseng and forestland ginseng. Ginseng faces many problems such as high soil bulk density, easy hardening, low nutrient content, reduced porosity and increased soil acidification because of continuous cropping. Increasing studies indicate that plant rhizosphere symbiotic bacteria have an important effect on plant growth and development. We speculate that differences in microbial community may play an important role in promoting ginseng growth, development and health. To reveal the differences between farmland and forestland ginseng cultivation, and to address problems associated with continuous ginseng cropping, we investigated the effects of differences in plant rhizosphere symbiotic bacterial communities in promoting ginseng growth, development, and health. RESULT: In the present study, the microbial communities in the rhizosphere of different genotypes and ecological environments were analyzed using the high-throughput sequencing platform Illumina, phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt), and other technologies. The organic matter, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus contents in forestland soil were significantly different from those in farmland. The bacterial communities of ginseng in forestland, farmland, and greenhouse environments have specific dominant groups at the phylum and genus levels. There were differences in the gene functions of ginseng root-related bacterial communities between forestland and farmland. There were significant differences in the abundance distribution of rhizosphere bacteria among the different genotypes at the phylum and genus levels. CONCLUSIONS: There is a close relationship between the ecological environment and bacterial population structure, and the ecological environment of forestland is more conducive to the formation of rich rhizosphere bacterial populations; additionally, the genetic diversity is richer than that of farmland. The rhizosphere bacterial community structure of ginseng was influenced by genotype, and there was a correlation between the distance between ginseng genotypes and the stratified clustering of its rhizosphere bacterial community structure.

Switchable theranostics are of great interest for accurate tumor imaging and targeted therapy. Here, we develop smart engineering to construct nanostructured phthalocyanines self-assembled by amphiphilic zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) and hydrophobic copper phthalocyanines (CuPcs) (ZnPc(PEG)5:CuPc-N, where ZnPc(PEG)5 is monosubstituted ZnPcs with pentaethylene glycol as the substituent). The fluorescence and reactive oxygen species generation of ZnPc(PEG)5:CuPc-N can be triggered depending on the membrane of the tumor cells for the imaging and photoactivities. Concerning the stability in blood circulation, the surface of the nanocomplex is coated with polydopamine, which responds to the tumor acidic microenvironment. ZnPc(PEG)5 and CuPc focus on photodynamic and photothermal properties, respectively, and can be stimulated by a single laser beam, endowing ZnPc(PEG)5:CuPc-N a combined antitumor effect from evaluations both in vitro and in vivo. In our study, the mechanism of switchable theranostics, the strategy of combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy, and the smart nanoengineering technology of phthalocyanines with poor water solubility can be applied to other phthalocyanines or phthalocyanine-like phototherapy agents.

This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to explore the effects of flavonoid intake on adiponectin and leptin levels. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched on March 1, 2021. Random-effects, subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were conducted on 40 publications. Flavonoid intake significantly increased circulating adiponectin (0.54 µg/ml, 95% CI [0.20, 0.88], p = .002; I2  = 86.4%) and significantly reduced leptin levels (weighted mean difference: -0.79 ng/ml, 95% CI [-1.33, -0.25], p = .004; I2  = 87.7%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that flavonoid intervention produced a significant elevation in adiponectin levels only in studies that lasted more than 12 weeks, conducted in Asian regions, were parallel-designed, involved obese or overweight participants and participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or cardiovascular diseases, used tea catechins, and used a dietary supplement intervention. A significantly negative effect on leptin levels was observed in studies conducted in Asian countries, with healthy participants and participants with T2DM, used whole food interventions, and involved participants with lower baseline leptin levels. In conclusion, flavonoid intake significantly increased circulating adiponectin and decreased leptin levels; however, study heterogeneity was very high. Future well-designed trials are required to address heterogeneous study designs and clarify the efficacy of plants in regulating adiponectin and leptin levels.

The continuing challenges that limit effectiveness of tumor therapeutic vaccines were high heterogeneity of tumor immunogenicity, low bioactivity of antigens, as well as insufficient lymph nodes (LNs) drainage of antigens and adjuvants. Transportation of in situ neoantigens and adjuvants to LNs may be an effective approach to solve the abovementioned problems. Therefore, an FA-TSL/AuNCs/SV nanoplatform was constructed by integrating simvastatin (SV) adjuvant loaded Au nanocages (AuNCs) as cores (AuNCs/SV) and folic acid modified thermal-sensitive liposomes (FA-TSL) as shells to enhance de novo antitumor immunity. After accumulation in tumor guided by FA, AuNCs mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) induced the release of tumor-derived protein antigens (TDPAs) and the shedding of FA-TSL. Exposed AuNCs/SV soon captured TDPAs to form in situ recombinant vaccine (AuNCs/SV/TDPAs). Subsequently, AuNCs/SV/TDPAs could efficiently transport to draining LNs owing to the hyperthermia induced vasodilation effect and small particle size, achieving co-delivery of antigens and adjuvant for initiation of specific T cell response. In melanoma bearing mice, FA-TSL/AuNCs/SV and laser irradiation effectively ablated primary tumor, against metastatic tumors and induced immunological memory. This approach served a hyperthermia enhanced platform drainage to enable robust personalized cancer vaccination.

Vascular endothelial cells and oxidation reduction system play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (AS). If these conditions are disordered, it will inevitably lead to plaque formation and even rupture. Astragaloside IV (AsIV) and salvianolic acid B (Sal B) are the main active ingredients of Astragalus membranaceus and Salvia miltiorrhiza, respectively, and found to ameliorate vascular endothelial dysfunction and protect against oxidative stress in recent studies. However, it is still unknown if the combination of AsIV and Sal B (AsIV + Sal B) can inhibit the development of plaque through amplifying the protective effect of vascular endothelial cells and anti-oxidative stress effect. To clarify the role of AsIV + Sal B in AS, we observed the efficacy of each group (Control, Model, AsIV, Sal B, and AsIV + Sal B) by biomolecular assays, such as observing the pathological morphology of the aorta by oil red O staining, evaluating the level of oxidative stress and endothelial cells in the serum by the Elisa test, and analyzing the changes of all small molecule metabolites in liver tissue by UPLC-QTOF-MS. Results showed that AsIV, Sal B and AsIV + Sal B decreased the deposition of lipid in the arterial wall, so as to exert the effect of anti-oxidant stress and vascular endothelial protection, where the inhibitory effect of AsIV + Sal B was the most obvious. Metabonomics analysis showed that Sal B regulated the metabolic pathways of arginine and proline. AsIV regulated glycerol metabolism and saturated fatty acid biosynthesis metabolism. AsIV + Sal B is mainly related to the regulation of the citrate cycle (TCA cycle), alanine, aspartic acid, and glutamate metabolism, cysteine, and methionine metabolism. Succinic acid and methionine are synergistic metabolites that exert an enhancing effect when AsIV and Sal B were used in combination. In conclusion, we demonstrated that AsIV acompanied with Sal B can be successfully used for anti-oxidative stress and vascular endothelial protection of AS, and succinic acid and methionine are the synergistic metabolites.

Heavy metals (HMs) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soils can be detrimental to both soil microorganisms and public health. However, the effects of HMs and TPHs on microbes as well as the consequent microbial-derived health risk remains unclear in soils by local roads where citizens are clearly accessible to traffic-derived pollutants. Herein, we sampled 84 roadside soils throughout Shanghai. We measured the levels of soil edaphic factors, 6 HMs, and alkane TPHs. We further focused on the responses of bacterial and fungal communities assessed via sequencing and network analysis. Results showed that all soil HMs exceeded background levels of Shanghai soil, while the levels of TPHs are comparable to unpolluted sites. Bacterial network nodes and links decreased sharply under HM stress whereas that of fungal networks remained unchanged. The differential pattern was attributed to the asynchronous response of key classes that fungal key classes were more resistant to HMs than bacteria. In addition, 66.8 % of fungal genera associated with immune-mediated disease increased with increased HM stress for its HM tolerance. Together our findings indicate that despite the relatively stable fungal community in response to environmental stresses, the elevation of harmful fungi likely pose threats to health of urban dwellers.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death, which signifies the urgent need for effective anti-atherosclerotic strategies. Gut microbiota-dependent trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is associated with atherosclerosis, and geraniin, a natural polyphenol with various biological activities, might play key role in this process. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the pharmacological activity of geraniin in atherosclerosis through remodeling the gut microbiota. METHODS: C57BL/6J ApoE-/- mice were administrated geraniin for 12 weeks. The colon contents were analyzed via 16S rRNA sequencing. Pathological staining was performed to evaluate the atherosclerotic characteristics. Cytokine assays detected the levels of plasma inflammatory cytokines. RAW264.7 cells were cultured in vitro and treated with TMAO. Tandem Mass Tag quantitative proteomics analysis and western blot were performed to investigate the effect of TMAO in macrophages. RESULTS: The plasma TMAO level in mice significantly decreased after geraniin intervention. The predominant intestinal microflora from geraniin-treated mice were Bacteroides (65.3%) and Firmicutes (30.6%). Pathological staining demonstrated that administration of geraniin attenuated atherosclerotic characteristics. After geraniin treatment, plasma levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α in mice were significantly reduced, and IL-10 levels were significantly increased. Proteomics analysis demonstrated the number of differentially expressed proteins after TMAO administration. In vitro study suggested that the atherogenic effect of TMAO could be attributed to changes in CD36, transmembrane protein 106a, apolipoprotein C1, macrophage scavenger receptor types I and II, and alpha-2-macroglobulin. CONCLUSION: Geraniin might be an effective prospective drug against cardiovascular diseases, and the gut microbiota is a potential target to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic disease.

Phosphogypsum is one of the hottest issues in the field of environmental solid waste treatment, with complex and changeable composition. Meanwhile, phosphogypsum contains a large number of impurities, thus leading to the low resource utilization rate, and it can only be stockpiled in large quantities. Phosphogypsum occupies a lot of land and poses a serious pollution threat to the ecological environment. This paper mainly summarizes the existing pretreatment and resource utilization technology of phosphogypsum. The pretreatment mainly includes dry method and wet method. The resource utilization technology mainly includes building materials, chemical raw materials, agriculture, environmental functional materials, filling materials, carbon sequestration and rare and precious extraction. Although there are many aspects of resource utilization of phosphogypsum, the existing technology is far from being able to consume a large amount of accumulated and generated phosphogypsum. Through the analysis, the comparison and mechanism analysis of the existing multifaceted and multi-level resource treatment technologies of phosphogypsum, the four promising resource utilization directions of phosphogypsum are put forward, mainly including prefabricated building materials, eco-friendly materials and soil materials, and new green functional materials and chemical fillers. Moreover, this paper summarizes the research basis of multi field and all-round treatment and disposal of phosphogypsum, which reduces repeated researches and development, as well as the treatment cost of phosphogypsum. This paper could provide a feasible research direction for the resource treatment technology of phosphogypsum in the future, so as to improve the consumption of phosphogypsum and reduce environmental risks.

Phosphogypsum is one of the typical by-products of phosphorus chemical industry. As a strategic industry related to the national livelihood of China, phosphorus chemical industry has accumulated and produced a significant amount of phosphogypsum. In general, phosphogypsum contains approximately 80%-95% calcium sulfate dihydrate, and less than 5% toxic and harmful elements. In this paper, toxic and hazardous components in phosphogypsum were efficiently solidified and stabilized by highly targeted solidification and stabilization technology. Calcium carbide slag or lime was used as an alkali-base neutralizer of phosphogypsum, and polymeric ferric sulfate or polymeric aluminum chloride as a directional solidification stabilizer to analyze the leaching toxicity of the mixed powder in 1, 3, 5 and 15 days. The experimental results demonstrate excellent solidification and stabilization effect with the leaching pH of 6-9, the leaching concentration of P, F and heavy metals of less than 0.5 mg/L, 10 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L, respectively, which meets the requirements of relevant international standards. Mechanistic analysis indicates that the solidification and stabilization of toxic and hazardous substances in phosphogypsum is perfectly achieved owing to the generation, adsorption and encapsulation of insoluble substances. This technology can reduce the costs and difficulty in the phosphogypsum treatment, and has extensive application potentials.

Mogroside-rich extract (MGE), the main bioactive component of dried Siraitia grosvenorii fruit, has long been used as a natural sweetener and traditional Chinese medicine. This extract possesses various types of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, hypoglycemic and hypolipemic activities. Moreover, we recently revealed that MGE has beneficial effects on female reproduction. Increasing maternal age leads to a rapid reduction in female fertility; in particular, it dramatically decreases ovarian function. Nevertheless, whether MGE can alleviate ovarian aging and the underlying mechanisms have not yet been explored. In this study, mice were treated with MGE by supplementation in drinking water from 10 to 44 weeks of age. Then, ovarian function and molecular changes were determined. Our findings showed that MGE treatment protected aged mice from estrous cycle disorder. Moreover, MGE treatment significantly increased the ovarian reserves of aged mice. RNA-seq data showed that MGE upregulated the expression of genes related to gonad development, follicular development, and hormone secretion in ovarian tissue. Additionally, inflammatory stress was induced, as indicated by upregulation of inflammation-related gene expression and elevated TNF-α levels in the ovarian tissues of aged mice; however, MGE treatment attenuated inflammatory stress. In summary, our findings demonstrate that MGE can ameliorate age-related estrous cycle disorder and ovarian reserve decline in mice, possibly by alleviating ovarian inflammatory stress.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Blue honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea var. edulis) berry has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of bacterial infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and metabolic diseases. There is evidence to support its pharmacological effects in improving diabetes, fatty liver, and obesity. AIM OF STUDY: To investigate the effect of blue honeysuckle berry extract (BHBE) on lipid accumulation in adipocytes and the underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) was applied to analyze the polyphenolic compounds in BHBE. 3T3-L1 cells were used to induce into adipocytes. Oil Red O staining combined with triglyceride (TG) content determination were carried out to evaluate intracellular lipid accumulation. Western blot was used to determine the expression of lipogenic enzymes and transcription factors. Real-time PCR was used to determine the expression of lipolytic enzymes and adipocyte markers. RESULTS: The primary polyphenols in BHBE are flavonoids (mainly flavonols and anthocyanins). BHBE dose-dependently inhibited lipid accumulation in adipocytes by reducing the expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and increasing the phosphorylation level of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Moreover, BHBE was found to promote the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and further reduce the expression of lipogenic transcription factors (PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBP-1c), while the selective AMPK inhibitor attenuated the suppressive effect of BHBE on lipogenesis. In addition, BHBE increased the expression of beige adipocyte markers (Cd137 and Tmem26) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) without affecting the expression of brown adipocyte markers (Ebf3 and Eva1). CONCLUSION: BHBE inhibits lipid accumulation in adipocytes by suppressing lipogenesis via AMPK activation as well as by promoting beiging of adipocytes, which supports the anti-obesity potential of blue honeysuckle berry.

BACKGROUND: Essential hypertension (EH) with anxiety or depression belongs to the category of psycho-cardiology. Hypertension is closely related to anxiety and depression. The adverse reactions of Western medicine are apparent and the compliance is poor. Supplementary and replacement therapies have accumulated rich experience in clinical practices, which can reduce side effects and improve clinical efficacy. This study intends to use the Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) analysis method for the first time to gather randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of hypertension with anxiety or depression disorder and rank efficacy and safety, to provide a reference basis for the treatment of hypertension with anxiety or depression disorder. METHODS: All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and registered and ongoing trials of Chinese and English databases, related to supplementation and replacement therapies of EH with anxiety or depression disorder, published from initial state to February 2021, will be collected in the form of computer retrieval. Two researchers will independently screen the literature, extracting data, assessing bias risk and assessing heterogeneity. We will use software WinBUGS 1.4.3 and Stata 16.0 for pairwise meta-analysis and NMA to comprehensively evaluate various interventions. The quality of evidence will be evaluated through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS: This NMA will comprehensively compare and rank the efficacy and safety of a series of complementary and alternative therapies in treating EH with anxiety or depression disorder. CONCLUSION: Supplementary and replacement therapies have accumulated rich experience of clinical practices in improving EH with anxiety or depression disorder. We expect that this NMA will guide practice and research by providing reliable evidence of evidence-based medicine for the treatment of EH with anxiety or depression disorder.
