RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of exogenous salicylic acid (SA) treatment (0, control; 3 mmol L-1) on the antioxidant and hormone levels of winter jujube during shelf life (20 d) at 4 °C. The results showed that 3 mmol L-1 SA treatment preferably maintained firmness, color, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids, and effectively reduced the respiratory intensity and TSS/TA value (13.08%) of the fruit. Compared with the control group, the SA group had a higher content of sucrose (14.03%) and malic acid (29.13%). Meanwhile, SA reduced the accumulation of H2O2 (27.73%) and O2- (45.44%) by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase) and the content of antioxidant substances (ascorbic acid, total phenols, total flavonoids, and glutathione) in the fruit. In addition, 3 mmol L-1 SA treatment led to higher levels of endogenous abscisic acid (18.49%) and SA (20.47%) in fruit, and lower concentration of jasmonic acid (42.68%), but had a weak effect on indole acetic acid levels.

RESUMO

Qibao Meiran Wan is a Chinese herbal product sold as a therapy for tonifying the liver and kidney, dizziness, premature graying of hair, backache, constipation, and night sweats. It is widely available in Chinese pharmacies and drugstores and is sold without prescription. We describe a case of acute liver injury in a 26-year-old Chinese man who developed symptomatic hepatitis 1 month after starting Qibao Meiran Wan. There was no evidence of viral hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, autoimmune hepatitis, or Budd-Chiari syndrome. The liver injury slowly resolved over 20 days after discontinuing the herbal product. Herbal toxicity was later confirmed by a liver biopsy. Qibao Meiran Wan contains a mixture of several plants including Polygonum multiflorum, which was previously associated with hepatotoxicity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hepatotoxicity by Qibao Meiran Wan. Clinicians treating patients with acute hepatitis of unclear etiology should pay attention to the consumption of Qibao Meiran Wan.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the time law of electroacupuncture in regulation of circadian rhythms of the organism. METHODS: Effects of electroacupuncture at "Shenshu" (BL 23) at Zi, Wu, Mao and You periods on circadian rhythms of locomotor activity and core body temperature in hamsters were observed with chronobiological research methods. RESULTS: Electroacupuncture at Wu period could decrease the amplitude of locomotor activity rhythm (P < 0.05), at Mao period could delay the peak phase of circadian rhythm and at You period could advance the peak phase of circadian rhythm (both P < 0.05); and electroacupuncture at Mao period could delay 22.36 degrees and at You period advance 39.32 degrees for the rhythm peak of the circadian rhythm of core body temperature. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture has a certain effect on circadian rhythm of locomotor activity and core body temperature.
