RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, with significant economic and cultural value. However, tea production faces many challenges due to various biotic and abiotic stresses, among which fungal diseases are particularly devastating. RESULTS: To understand the identity and pathogenicity of isolates recovered from tea plants with symptoms of wilt, phylogenetic analyses and pathogenicity assays were conducted. Isolates were characterized to the species level by sequencing the ITS, tef-1α, tub2 and rpb2 sequences and morphology. Four Fusarium species were identified: Fusarium fujikuroi, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Fusarium concentricum. The pathogenicity of the Fusarium isolates was evaluated on 1-year-old tea plants, whereby F. fujikuroi OS3 and OS4 strains were found to be the most virulent on tea. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of tea rot caused by F. fujikuroi in the world. This provides the foundation for the identification and control of wilt disease in tea plants.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) trigonal selenium (t-Se) has become a new member in 2D semiconducting nanomaterial families. It is composed of well-aligned one-dimensional Se atomic chains bonded via van der Waals (vdW) interaction. The contribution of this unique anisotropic nanostructure to its mechanical properties has not been explored. Here, for the first time, we combine experimental and theoretical analyses to study the anisotropic mechanical properties of individual 2D t-Se nanosheets. It was found that its fracture strength and Young's modulus parallel to the atomic chain direction are much higher than along the transverse direction, which was attributed to the weak vdW interaction between Se atomic chains as compared to the covalent bonding within individual chains. Additionally, two distinctive fracture modes along two orthogonal loading directions were identified. This work provides important insights into the understanding of anisotropic mechanical behaviors of 2D semiconducting t-Se and opens new possibilities for future applications.

RESUMO

Green manuring is a common practice in replenishment of soil organic matter and nutrients in rice paddy field. Owing to the complex interplay of multiple factors, the oxidation--reduction (redox) properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from green manure crops are presently not fully understood. In this study, a variety of surrogate parameters were used to evaluate the redox capacity and redox state of DOM derived from Chinese milk vetch (CMV, Astragalus sinicus L.) via microbial decomposition under continuously flooded (CF) and non-flooded (NF) conditions. Additionally, the correlation between the surrogate parameters of CMV-DOM and the kinetic parameters of relevant redox reactions was evaluated in a soil-water system containing CMV-DOM. Results showed that the redox properties of CMV-DOM were substantially different between the fresh and decomposed CMV-DOM treatments. Determination of the surrogate parameters via ultraviolet-visible/Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography generally provided high-quality data for predicting the redox capacity of CMV-DOM, while the surrogate parameters determined by elemental analysis were suitable for predicting the redox state of CMV-DOM. Depending on the redox capacity and redox state of various moieties/components, NF-decomposed CMV-DOM could easily accelerate soil reduction by shuttling electrons to iron oxides, because it contained more reversible redox-active functional groups (e.g. quinone and hydroquinone pairs) than CF-decomposed CMV-DOM. This work demonstrates that a single index cannot interpret complex changes in multiple factors that jointly determine the redox reactivity of CMV-DOM. Thus, a multi-parametric study is needed for providing comprehensive information on the redox properties of green manure DOM.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers derived from bulk layered materials are very interesting from both scientific and application viewpoints, as evidenced from the story of graphene. Atomic layers of several such materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and dichalcogenides are examples that complement graphene. The observed unconventional properties of graphene has triggered interest in doping the hexagonal honeycomb lattice of graphene with atoms such as boron (B) and nitrogen (N) to obtain new layered structures. Individual atomic layers containing B, C, and N of various compositions conform to several stable phases in the three-component phase diagram of B-C-N. Additionally, stacking layers built from C and BN allows for the engineering of new van-der-Waals stacked materials with novel properties. In this paper, the synthesis, characterization, and properties of atomically thin layers, containing B, C, and N, as well as vertically assembled graphene/h-BN stacks are reviewed. The electrical, mechanical, and optical properties of graphene, h-BN, and their hybrid structure are also discussed along with the applications of such materials.

RESUMO

Graphene (G) and atomic layers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are complementary two-dimensional materials, structurally very similar but with vastly different electronic properties. Recent studies indicate that h-BN atomic layers would be excellent dielectric layers to complement graphene electronics. Graphene on h-BN has been realized via peeling of layers from bulk material to create G/h-BN stacks. Considering that both these layers can be independently grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of their precursors on metal substrates, it is feasible that these can be sequentially grown on substrates to create the G/h-BN stacked layers useful for applications. Here we demonstrate the direct CVD growth of h-BN on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and on mechanically exfoliated graphene, as well as the large area growth of G/h-BN stacks, consisting of few layers of graphene and h-BN, via a two-step CVD process. The G/h-BN film is uniform and continuous and could be transferred onto different substrates for further characterization and device fabrication.

RESUMO

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a layered material similar to graphite, is a promising dielectric. Monolayer h-BN, so-called "white graphene", has been isolated from bulk BN and could be useful as a complementary two-dimensional dielectric substrate for graphene electronics. Here we report the large area synthesis of h-BN films consisting of two to five atomic layers, using chemical vapor deposition. These atomic films show a large optical energy band gap of 5.5 eV and are highly transparent over a broad wavelength range. The mechanical properties of the h-BN films, measured by nanoindentation, show 2D elastic modulus in the range of 200-500 N/m, which is corroborated by corresponding theoretical calculations.
