RESUMO

Allergic rhinitis, one of the common diseases in otolaryngology, has shown an increasing incidence under the influence of various geographical, cultural and economic factors, making it a common and serious global public health problem. Modern medicine uses medication as the primary therapy for allergic rhinitis, but poor symptom control and easy relapse are the disadvantages of this treatment. However, Traditional Chinese medicine, with its long history, has treated allergic rhinitis by symptomatic treatment according to pattern differentiation with its unique insights and methods, which are effective and safe in numerous clinical studies. Therefore, this paper describes TCM decoction, acupuncture, moxibustion, acupoint application, catgut-embedding therapy and ear acupuncture in the treatment of AR. This study aims to provide more personalized and precise treatment for allergic rhinitis patients by investigating the mechanism of action, clinical research and development of traditional Chinese medicine treatments.

Soybean is one of the most economically important crops worldwide and an important source of unsaturated fatty acids and protein for the human diet. Consumer demand for healthy fats and oils is increasing, and the global demand for vegetable oil is expected to double by 2050. Identification of key genes that regulate seed fatty acid content can facilitate molecular breeding of high-quality soybean varieties with enhanced fatty acid profiles. Here, we analysed the genetic architecture underlying variations in soybean seed fatty acid content using 547 accessions, including mainly landraces and cultivars from northeastern China. Through fatty acid profiling, genome re-sequencing, population genomics analyses, and GWAS, we identified a SEIPIN homologue at the FA9 locus as an important contributor to seed fatty acid content. Transgenic and multiomics analyses confirmed that FA9 was a key regulator of seed fatty acid content with pleiotropic effects on seed protein and seed size. We identified two major FA9 haplotypes in 1295 resequenced soybean accessions and assessed their phenotypic effects in a field planting of 424 accessions. Soybean accessions carrying FA9H2 had significantly higher total fatty acid contents and lower protein contents than those carrying FA9H1 . FA9H2 was absent in wild soybeans but present in 13% of landraces and 26% of cultivars, suggesting that it may have been selected during soybean post-domestication improvement. FA9 therefore represents a useful genetic resource for molecular breeding of high-quality soybean varieties with specific seed storage profiles.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of nausea and vomiting following craniotomy is high, and pericardium 6 (P6; Neiguan) acupoint stimulation is an important strategy for treating postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Here, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) at P6 as an adjunct to antiemetic drugs to prevent PONV after craniotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized placebo-controlled trial enrolled 120 patients scheduled for craniotomy. The enrolled patients were randomly assigned to a TEAS or sham TEAS group. The incidence of PONV, pain score, and postoperative remedial treatment with antiemetics and analgesics at 0-2, 2-6, and 6-24 h after craniotomy were assessed. RESULTS: The patient characteristics did not significantly differ between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 0-2 and 6-24 h after craniotomy, the incidence of vomiting was not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 2-6 h, the incidence of vomiting was higher in the sham TEAS group than in the TEAS group (29.3 % vs. 14.0 %, P = 0.047). During 0-2 and 2-6 h, the pain scores did not differ significantly between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 6-24 h after craniotomy, the pain score was significantly higher in the sham TEAS group than in the TEAS group (P = 0.001). The degree of nausea and proportion of patients requiring antiemetic drugs were not significantly different between the two groups in each period (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: TEAS at P6 may reduce vomiting incidence and pain scores following craniotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical therapeutic effect between electroacupuncture at "four points of sacral region" and transurethral Erbium laser in treatment of moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. METHODS: A total of 68 patients of moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy were divided into an electroacupuncture group (34 cases) and an Erbium laser group (34 cases, 3 cases dropped off) according to the settings. In the electroacupuncture group, electroacupuncture was applied at "four points of sacral region", i.e. points of 0.5 cun beside bilateral sacrococcygeal joints and bilateral Huiyang (BL 35), with continuous wave, 2 Hz in frequency, 60 min each time, once every other day, 3 times a week, 12 times as one course of treatment. In the Erbium laser group, transurethral Erbium laser technology was given, once every 4 weeks as one course of treatment. Both groups were treated for 5 courses. The scores of the International Consultation on Incontinence questionnaire-short form (ICI-Q-SF) and the incontinence quality of life questionnaire (I-QOL) were observed before treatment, after each course of treatment and in follow-up after 1 and 2 months of treatment completion, respectively, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, the ICI-Q-SF scores were decreased while the I-QOL scores were increased after 5 courses of treatment and in follow-up after 1, 2 months of treatment completion in the two groups (P<0.01). The ICI-Q-SF score in follow-up after 2 months of treatment completion were higher than that after 5 courses of treatment in the Erbium laser group (P<0.05). After 3, 4, 5 courses of treatment and in follow-up after 1 and 2 months of treatment completion, the ICI-Q-SF scores in the electroacupuncture group were lower than those in the Erbium laser group (P<0.05, P<0.01); after 2, 3, 4, 5 courses of treatment and in follow-up after 1 and 2 months of treatment completion, the I-QOL scores in the electroacupuncture group were higher than those in the Erbium laser group (P<0.01). The change ranges of ICI-Q-SF score and I-QOL score between before treatment and after each course of treatment in the electroacupuncture group were lager than those in the Erbium laser group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The total effective rate was 61.8% (21/34) in the electroacupuncture group, which was superior to 19.4 (6/31) in the Erbium laser group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Both electroacupuncture at "four points of sacral region" and transurethral Erbium laser can improve the clinical symptoms and the quality of life in patients of moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. The short-term efficacy and long-term efficacy of electroacupuncture are superior to the Erbium laser technology.

Context: Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a group of chronic, inflammatory, rheumatic diseases of which axial SpA and peripheral SpA are the two main types. Patients that predominantly have manifestations of axSpA may have additional peripheral-arthritis symptoms, and vice versa. For these hard-to-diagnose SpA patients, symptoms can be nonspecific and difficult to identify, making it easy to miss a diagnosis or misdiagnosis patients, resulting in disability. Objective: The study intended to evaluate the value of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) led by the joint surgeons to rapidly identify spondyloarthritis (SpA). Design: The research team designed a controlled study that analyzed the clinical data of patients with spondyloarthritis. Setting: The study was conducted in the Department of Joint Surgery at Shandong Second Provincial General Hospital in Jinan, China. Participants: Participants were 113 SpA patients at the hospital between January 2019 and January 2020. Intervention: he research team divided participants into an intervention group, the MDT group that used that model to diagnose 83 participants and the control group with 30 participants, for whom diagnoses occurred using the conventional diagnostic model. Outcome Measures: The research team collected data on participants' number of visits and number of departments visited as well as determined the amount of time that elapsed before a diagnosis occurred. The team also measured C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and the scores on the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) at baseline and after 3 months and 6 months treatment. Results: In the MDT group, diagnoses included: (1) axial SpA (axSpA)-73 participants, and (2) peripheral SpA-10 participants, including three with reactive arthritis, two with uveitis, and five with psoriatic arthritis. Eight participants in that group were HLA-B27 positive, and 14 had complications from a latent tuberculosis infection. In the control group, diagnoses included: (1) axSpA-25 participants; and (2) peripheral SpA-5 participants, including three with psoriatic arthritis and two with reactive arthritis. Six participants in that group were HLA-B27 positive and four had complications from a latent tuberculosis infection. The number of visits, number of departments visited, and time to diagnosis in the MDT group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < .001). After three and six months of treatment, the MDT group's CRP, ESR, BASDAI, and BASFI were significantly lower than those at baseline (P < .001). Conclusions: The MDT model of spondyloarthritis led by joint surgeons was accurate and efficient, allowing the medical personnel to quickly identify and intervene in SpA and provide effective treatment for patients. It's a diagnosis and treatment model worthy of promotion.

Wild edible mushrooms are a huge source to discover bioactive natural products. In this work, one new polyprenylphenol derivative, termed 2-geranylgeranyl-1,4-benzenediol 1-O-acetate (1), together with eight known compounds (2-9) were isolated from wild edible mushroom Suillus luteus. The structure of new compound was elucidated by high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance data. The structures of known compounds were elucidated by comparison of their nuclear magnetic resonance data with literature data. Compounds 1-7 exhibited significant 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.55 ± 0.29 to 19.89 ± 2.28 µM. In addition, compounds 1-7 also showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 21.97 ± 3.74 to 66.26 ± 6.85 µM.

PURPOSE: Urethral pain syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by disturbing feeling or server pain sensed at the urethra without specific treatment. This double-center, two-arm controlled trial aimed to explore the efficacy of electrical pudendal nerve stimulation (EPNS) versus intravesical instillation (II) of heparin and alkalinized lidocaine for urethral pain syndrome (UPS). METHODS: Eighty eligible patients took three sessions of EPNS, or 1 session of II per week, for 6 consecutive weeks. The primary end point was the change of pelvic pain and urgency/frequency symptom (PUF) score from baseline to week 6. Secondary outcome measures included changes of visual analogue scale (VAS) score and three sub-score extracted from PUF score. RESULTS: The enrolled participants were all included in the intention-to-treat analyses, and baseline characteristics between the two groups were well balanced. The post-treatment PUF score decreased by 10.0 (7.00, 16.50) in the EPNS group, and by 7.0 (3.00, 10.00) in the II group. At the closure of treatment, the medians of changes in symptom score, bother score, pain-related score and VAS score were 6.50 (4.25, 10.00), 4.00 (2.00, 6.00), 6.00 (5.00, 8.00),4.50 (2.25, 6.00), respectively, in the EPNS group, and 4.00 (2.00, 7.00), 3.00 (1.00, 3.00), 3.00 (2.00, 6.00), 2.00 (1.00, 4.00), respectively, in the II group. All the between-group differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Compared with the II, the EPNS results in superior pain control and better relief of lower urinary tract symptoms, and deserves further attention. OBJECTIVE: Acute pain management after craniotomy can be challenging. Previous studies have shown inadequate pain control following the procedure. Oral medication can sometimes be delayed by postoperative nausea, and use of anesthetics may impair the assessment of brain function. We conducted this prospective study to evaluate the effect of acupuncture at the P6 acupoint on postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting in patients undergoing craniotomy. METHODS: The authors conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial among 120 patients scheduled for craniotomy under general anesthesia. 120 patients were randomly assigned into an acupuncture group or a sham acupuncture group. All patients received standardized anesthesia and analgesia treatment. Acupuncture was executed in the recovery room after surgery. For the acupuncture group, the P6 points on each wrist were punctured perpendicularly to a depth of 20 mm. Needles were retained for 30 min and stimulated every 10 min to maintain the De-Qi sensation. For the sham acupuncture group, sham points on each wrist were punctured perpendicularly to a depth of 5 mm. Needles were retained for 30 min with no stimulation during the duration. The postoperative pain scores, PONV, and dose of tramadol were assessed 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after surgery. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients completed the study. There was no statistically significant difference in baseline data between the two groups (P > 0.05). The VAS pain score of the acupuncture group was lower than that of the sham acupuncture group, and this difference was statistically significant (P=0.002). There was no difference in pain scores between the two groups during 0-24 h and 48-72 h (P > 0.05). The incidence of vomiting in the acupuncture group was lower than that in the sham acupuncture group during the 0-24 h period (13.8% vs. 28.8%, P=0.048). There was no difference in vomiting, however, during the 24-72 h period (P > 0.05). No significant differences were found in the degree of nausea and the dose of tramadol between the two groups at either time point in the acupuncture group and sham acupuncture group. CONCLUSION: The use of acupuncture at the P6 acupoint in neurosurgery patients did result in significantly lower pain scores and reduction in the incidence of vomiting after craniotomy. There were no significant side effects. Acupuncture at the P6 acupoint was well tolerated and safe in this patient population.

This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of activated charcoal combined with mannitol (ACM) for the treatment of Haff disease. This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at the Emergency Department of Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. Consecutive patients who were hospitalized during a two-year time frame (from June 2016 to August 2017) and diagnosed with Haff disease were reviewed. Clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, pain/anxiety scores, and treatment-related adverse events were collected. Sixty-eight Haff disease patients after boiled crayfish consumption were enrolled in this study. Besides standard treatments for Haff disease, 22 patients had an oral administration of activated charcoal and mannitol within 12 hours of hospital admission (ACM group), while the other 46 patients did not receive such treatment (non-ACM group). Baseline characteristics including clinical symptoms, serum enzyme levels, and pain/anxiety scores were comparable between the two groups. Activated charcoal and mannitol treatment led to lower CK-MB and AST levels from 12 hours to 60 hours, lower ALT and LDH levels from 12 hours to 72 hours, and lower CK levels from 24 hours to 72 hours after hospitalization. Patients in the ACM group had significantly shortened duration of hospital stays (7.5 [6.0-8.0] days vs 8.0 [6.8-10.0] days, p = 0.032) and lower anxiety scores 24 hours after hospital admission (40.7 ± 4.9 vs 44.1 ± 6.3, p = 0.032) than in the non-ACM group. No patient experienced treatment-related adverse events. The overall prognosis of both groups is good. Among patients with Haff disease caused by boiled crayfish, activated charcoal combined with mannitol treatment resulted in shorter hospital stays, lower serum CK, CK-MB, AST, ALT, and LDH levels, and lower anxiety scores.

BACKGROUND: We previously showed, using the Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database, that Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD) had a direct antitumor effect, and was combined with programmed cell death protein (PD)-1 inhibitors to treat microsatellite stable (MSS) tumor-bearing mice. However, the effect of GQD on patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is not clear. AIM: To determine the therapeutic mechanism of GQD in improving immune function, reducing inflammation and protecting intestinal barrier function. METHODS: Seventy patients with CRC were included in this study: 37 in the control group and 33 in the treatment group. The proportions of CD4+ T, CD8+ T, natural killer (NK), NKT and T regulatory cells were measured by flow cytometry. Levels of the cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-10 and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) in serum were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of zonula occludens (ZO)-1, occludin, nuclear factor (NF)-κB and TNF-α in tumor and normal tissues was measured by immunohistochemistry. The composition of gut microbiota from patients in the treatment group was assessed using 16S rDNA analysis. RESULTS: There were no adverse events in the treatment group. The proportion of CD4+ T cells and NKT cells in the post-treatment group was significantly higher than that in the pre-treatment and control groups (P < 0.05). The level of TNF-α in the post-treatment group was significantly lower than that in the pre-treatment and control groups (P < 0.05). The concentration of 5-HT in the post-treatment group was significantly lower than that in the pre-treatment group (P < 0.05). The expression of ZO-1 and occludin in tumor tissues in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The expression of ZO-1 in normal tissues of the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P = 0.010). Compared with the control group, expression of NF-κB and TNF-α in tumor tissues of the treatment group was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Compared with the pre-treatment group, GQD decreased the relative abundance of Megamonas and Veillonella. In addition, GQD increased the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Akkermansia and Prevotella. CONCLUSION: GQD enhances immunity and protects intestinal barrier function in patients with CRC by regulating the composition of gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is among the most common adverse reactions following anaesthesia and surgery. Recent clinical studies have reported that the average incidence is about 30%, while in patients specifically undergoing neurosurgery, the incidence can be as great as 73%. Studies also suggest that its occurrence increases the risk of intracranial haematoma and haemorrhage. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of intradermal thumbtack needle buried Neiguan (pericardium 6 (P6)) point therapy in the prevention of PONV in patients undergoing craniotomy under general anaesthesia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a single-centre, three-arm, randomised controlled trial. 180 participants are randomly assigned to either an acupuncture, intradermal thumbtack needle or control group in a 1:1:1 ratio. The P6 of the acupuncture group is punctured at both sides perpendicularly to a depth of 20 mm. Needles are retained for 30 min and stimulated every 10 min to maintain the de qi. The therapy includes two treatments; the acupuncture is administered immediately after and 24 hours after surgery. For the intradermal thumbtack needle group, the intradermal thumbtack needle is quickly inserted into the skin and embedded at P6 acupoints bilaterally. Patients and their families are asked to press the needlepoint with the onset of nausea, vomiting, bloating, pain and other reported discomforts. The needle is replaced after 24 hours. The therapy is administered immediately after and 24 hours after surgery. For the control group, no intervention is carried out. The incidence of PONV within 48 hours after craniotomy across the three groups is observed. Other observations include: (1) assessment of nausea score (severity of nausea) and pain score (visual analogue scale) 0-2, 2-6, 6-24 and 24-48 hours after craniotomy under general anaesthesia; (2) assessment of total rescue antiemetic dosage 0-48 hours after craniotomy under general anaesthesia; (3) length of hospital stay and (4) patient satisfaction score with PONV management. We will perform all statistical analysis following the intention-to-treat principle. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval has been granted by the Bioethics Subcommittee of the West China Hospital, Sichuan University: the approval number is 2018 (number 231). Results will be expected to be published in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR1800017173.

Berberine (BBR) is a natural isoquinoline alkaloid, which is used in traditional medicine for its anti-microbial, anti-protozoal, anti-diarrhoeal activities. Berberine interacts with DNA and displays anti-cancer activities, yet its effects on cellular DNA repair and on synthetic treatments with chemotherapeutic drugs remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of BBR on DNA repair and on sensitization of breast cancer cells to different types of DNA damage anti-tumoural drugs. We found BBR arrested cells in the cell cycle S phase and induced DNA breaks. Cell growth analysis showed BBR sensitized MDA-MB-231 cells to cisplatin, camptothecin and methyl methanesulfonate; however, BBR had no synergistic effects with hydroxurea and olaparib. These results suggest BBR only affects specific DNA repair pathways. Western blot showed BBR down-regulated XRCC1 expressions, and the rescued XRCC1 recovered the resistance of cancer cells to BBR. Therefore, we conclude that BBR interferes with XRCC1-mediated base excision repair to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapeutic drugs. These finding can contribute to understanding the effects of BBR on cellular DNA repair and the clinical employment of BBR in treatment of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture nerve stimulation therapy (ENST) for interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS). METHODS: A total of 68 patients with IC/PBS were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 34 cases in each one. The patients in the observation group were treated with ENST; abdominal four acupoints and sacral four acupoints were connected with a pair of electrodes and treated alternately every other day. The ENST was given 50 min per times, three times a week for 3 months. The patients in the control group were treated with perfusion therapy of four-medication combination (heparin sodinm, lidocaine, sodium bicarbonate, gentamicin sulfate), twice a week for the first 6-8 weeks, followed by twice per month for 3 months. The infusion fluid remained for 1 h before discharging. The O' Leary-Sant score, including interstitial cystitis symptom index (ICSI) and interstitial cystitis problem index (ICPI), 24 h urination frequency, visual analogue scale (VAS) and maximum bladder volume were observed before treatment and treatment of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after treatment respectively; the adverse events during the treatment were also recorded. RESULTS: Compared before treatment, the O'Leary-Sant score (ICSI, ICPI), 24 h urination frequency, VAS and maximum bladder volume in the two groups were improved after 1, 3 months treatment and 6 months after treatment (all P<0.05). The scores of ICSI, ICPI, VAS and 24 h urination frequency in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The maximum bladder volume in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Six months after treatment, the total effective rate in the observation group was 87.5% (28/32), which was higher than 69.7% (23/33) in the control group (P<0.01). No significant adverse events occurred during the treatment. CONCLUSION: ENST could effectively relieve the clinical symptoms of IC/PBS, but its long-term efficacy needs further observation.

Therapeutic antibodies targeting PD-1 have made major breakthroughs in cancer treatment. However, the majority of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases are microsatellite stable (MSS) and do not respond to anti-PD-1-based immunotherapy. Combination therapy will be an ideal strategy to overcome this limitation. Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD), a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, has been clinically proven to be effective in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Here, a systemic pharmacological study revealed that GQD acts through multiple targets and pathways in the human body. Combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 potently inhibited the growth of CT26 tumours in a xenograft model. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 significantly enriched for s__Bacteroides_acidifaciens and s__uncultured_organism_g__norank_f__Bacteroidales_S24-7_group. Based on metabolomic analyses, profoundly altered metabolites were identified in the combination therapy group. Two metabolic signalling pathways, namely, glycerophospholipid metabolism and sphingolipid metabolism, were explored. In particular, we found that combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 significantly increased the proportion of CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood and tumour tissues. Direct treatment with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 increased the expression of IFN-γ, which is a critical factor in antitumour immunotherapy. In addition, combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 downregulated PD-1 and increased IL-2 levels, suggesting that the combination therapy could effectively restore T-cell functions by suppressing inhibitory checkpoints. The application of the Chinese medicinal formula GQD with PD-1 blockade-based immunotherapy can be a novel therapeutic strategy for CRC patients with MSS tumours.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common, distressing, and persistent symptom for patients with malignant tumor including colorectal cancer (CRC). Although studies of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) have sprung out in recent years, the pathophysiological mechanisms that induce CRF remain unclear, and effective therapeutic interventions have yet to be established. METHODS: To investigate the effect of the traditional Chinese medicine YangZheng XiaoJi (YZXJ) on CRF, we constructed orthotopic colon cancer mice, randomly divided into YZXJ group and control (NS) group. Physical or mental fatigue was respectively assessed by swimming exhaustion time or suspension tail resting time. At the end of the experiment, serum was collected to measure the expression level of inflammatory factors by ELISA and feces to microbiota changes by 16s rDNA, and hepatic glycogen content was detected via the anthrone method. RESULT: The nutritional status of the YZXJ group was better than that of the control group, and there was no statistical difference in tumor weight. The swimming exhaustion times of YZXJ group and control group were (162.80 ± 14.67) s and (117.60 ± 13.42, P < 0.05) s, respectively; the suspension tail resting time of YZXJ group was shorter than that of the control group (49.85 ± 4.56) s and (68.83 ± 7.26) s, P < 0.05)). Serum levels of IL-1ß and IL-6 in YZXJ group were significantly lower than the control group (P < 0.05). Liver glycogen in YZXJ group was (5.18 ± 3.11) mg/g liver tissue, which was significantly higher than that in control group (2.95 ± 2.06) mg/g liver tissue (P < 0.05). At phylum level, increased abundance of Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, Actinobacteria, and Cyanobacteria and decreased Proteobacteria in YZXJ group emerged as the top differences between the two groups, and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was decreased in YZXJ group compared to the control group. At genus level, the abundance of Parabacteroides, unidentified Saprospiraceae, and Elizabethkingia which all belong to phylum Bacteroidetes were increased, while Arcobacter, Marinobacter, Alkanindiges, Sulfuricurvum, Haliangium, and Thiobacillus in phylum Proteobacteria were decreased after YZXJ intervention. YZXJ can also increase Pirellula, Microbacterium, and Alpinimonas and decrease Rubrobacter and Iamia. CONCLUSION: YZXJ may reduce the physical and mental fatigue caused by colorectal cancer by inhibiting inflammatory reaction, promoting hepatic glycogen synthesis, and changing the composition of intestinal microbiota.

PURPOSE: This five-year, retrospective, multicenter study evaluated the long-term safety and efficiency of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) in Chinese patients with urinary voiding dysfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a Chinese national, multicenter, retrospective study that included 247 patients (51.2% female) who received an implantable pulse generator (IPG) (InterStim, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) between 2012 and 2016. Success was considered if the initial ≥50% improvement in any of primary voiding diary variables persisted compared with baseline. The results were further stratified by identifying patients who showed >50% improvement and those although showed <50% improvement but still wanted to receive IPG; these data were collected and analyzed for general improvement. RESULTS: Following test stimulation, 187 patients (43%) declined implantation and 247 (57%) underwent implantation using InterStim®. Among 247 patients, 34 (13.7%) had overactive bladder (OAB), 59 (23.8%) had interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), 47 (19%) had idiopathic urinary retention (IUR), and 107 (44.1%) had neurogenic bladder (NB). IPG efficiency rate for OAB, interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome, idiopathic urinary retention, and neurogenic bladder were 42.5, 72.4, 51.6, and 58.8%, respectively. The mean duration of follow-up was 20.1 ± 12.8 months. CONCLUSIONS: SNM appears effective in the long term, with a total IPG implantation rate of approximately 57% (ranging between 42.5 and 72.4% depending on indication). Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome appear to be the best indication for stage I testing. Chinese neurogenic bladder patients are most inclined to choose SNM. SNM is relatively safe, with low postoperation adverse events of 16.1% and reoperation rate of 3.2% during the follow-up period.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic rule of electroacupuncture (EA) in treating functional constipation. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with severe chronic functional constipation were randomized divided into EA (n=45) and sham-EA (n=43) groups. Patients in the EA group were treated with EA at bilateral Tianshu (ST 25), Fujie (SP 14), Shangjuxu (ST 37), and those in the sham-EA group were received superficial acupuncture at 1 cun lateral to the identical acupoints without electrical current delivery. The number of patients with complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBM) was weekly compared between the EA and sham-EA groups at baseline week, during 8 weeks' treatment, as well as the follow-up 4th, 8th and 12th weeks after treatment. The Bristol Stool Chart (BSC) and defecation difficulty scores were also weekly compared from baseline until 8 weeks. RESULTS: The CSBM showed significant differences from 3 to 8 weeks and at 4th, 8th and 12th weeks post-treatment (P<0.05), but not within the first two weeks between the EA and sham-EA groups. The number of patients who had more than 3 times of CSBM per week was increased in the EA group(P<0.05). The therapeutic effect of EA group was superior to that of the sham-EA group in improving BSC over the 4th and 5th weeks (P<0.05). The defecation difficulty score was improved in the EA group than in the sham-EA group since the 4th week (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: EA shows therapeutic effect for functional constipation by improving CSBM and BSC.

Carotenoids are considered to be crucial elements in many fields and, furthermore, the significant factor in pepper leaves under low light and chilling temperature. However, little literature focused on the method to determinate and extract the contents of carotenoid compositions in pepper leaves. Therefore, a time-saving and highly sensitive reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method for separation and quantification of 10 carotenoids was developed, and an optimized technological process for carotenoid composition extraction in pepper leaves was established for the first time. Our final method concluded that six xanthophylls eluted after about 9-26 min. In contrast, four carotenes showed higher retention times after nearly 28-40 min, which significantly shortened time and improved efficiency. Meanwhile, we suggested that 8 mL of 20% KOH-methanol solution should be added to perform saponification at 60 °C for 30 min. The ratio of solid-liquid was 1:8, and the ultrasound-assisted extraction time was 40 min.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects both adults and children, likely mediated by the deficits of various brain regions. The association between structural alterations in the brain and OSA syndrome have been reported in adult patients, but the corresponding evidence for OSA children is still limited. OBJECTIVE: The proposed study aimed to investigate the structural alterations in the brain of children with OSA, with focus on basal ganglia structures. METHODS: We recruited 25 OSA children (aged 10.3±1.5 years) and 30 healthy children (aged 10.1±1.8 years) with T1-weighted brain MRI and performed automatic segmentation of their brains. The shape alterations of the basal ganglia structures for OSA syndrome was determined by comparison of the OSA group and control group with surface-based shape analysis. RESULTS: Differences in the morphometry of the left thalamus and the left pallidum were found between the OSA group and control group. Compared to the control group, the OSA group presented significant atrophy in the ventral posterior nucleus and the medial dorsal nucleus of the left thalamus, while regional dilation was found in both the internal and external segments of the left pallidum. CONCLUSION: These findings identified the association between the structural deficits of the thalamus and OSA syndrome in children, which was consistent with the existing findings in OSA adults. In addition, the present study provided new insights to the distinctive pattern of structural changes of the pallidum in pediatric OSA when compared to adult OSA.
