BACKGROUND: Photobiomodulation is a promising therapy for hair loss with negligible side effects. However, the reported effects of photobiomodulation therapy for hair loss are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To assess the curative effect of photobiomodulation therapy for the treatment of hair loss. METHODS: A systematic review of self-controlled studies and randomized controlled trials was conducted. ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library were searched from the earliest date to May 30, 2021. RESULTS: Thirty-six studies (966 patients) were included. Two to 4 meta-analyses with different indices were performed separately on 4 groups of studies to test the effectiveness of the following hair loss treatments: ultraviolet light for alopecia areata (AA), red light for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), infrared light for AA, and infrared light for AGA. All meta-analyses showed that treatments were superior to control ( p < .05). CONCLUSION: The meta-analyses strongly suggested that photobiomodulation therapies with ultraviolet and infrared light were effective for treating AA, and photobiomodulation therapies with red light and infrared light were effective for treating AGA.

Increasing studies demonstrated that photobiomodulation (PBM) influenced specific biological effects in cells, tissues and organs, and these effects rely on the production of light irradiation. In this study, we aimed to precisely manipulate the spatial arrangement of adhesion cells in a traditional culture condition with 450 nm low intensity laser. Through 450 nm laser PBM, the adhesion of the cultured cells was significantly improved and resisted the digestion of 0.1% trypsin. Combined with a computer aided design system (CAD) and computer numerical control (CNC) system, the designed laser irradiation pattern induced the specific cell micropattern in the culture dish. RNA sequencing and biochemical experiments confirmed that the 450 nm laser prompted low-density lipoprotein (LDL) bonding to the cell surface and induced lipid peroxidation, which crosslinked and modified the protein molecules on the irradiated cell surface. In this way, the peroxidation product-modified proteins resisted trypsin proteolysis, ultimately leading to a differential detachment between the irradiated and non-irradiated cells under trypsin treatment. This convenient method did not require special biomaterial processing, has no impact on cell viability and functions, and required no changes to the conventional cell culture conditions. The photo-induced cell capturing is a great complement to existing tools by providing spatial resolution.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of astragalus injection on the endoplasmic reticulum stress in adriamycin(ADR)-injured cardiomyocytes with calumenin silencing by shRNA. METHODS: Firstly, the stable lentiviral calumenin shRNAvector was constructed. Secondly, in vitro cultured neonatal rat cardiac myocytes were randomly divided into control group、normal group (3 mg/L ADR), lentivirus infection group (lentivirus infection+3 mg/L ADR), Astragalus group 1 (3 mg/L ADR+Astragalus), Astragalus group 2 (lentivirus infection+3 mg/L ADR+Astragalus). The mRNA epression level of calumenin expression and reticulum stress chaperone in GRP78, GRP94 of each group was monitored by real-time PCR. RESULTS: ①Compared with that of the control group, the calumenin mRNA expression in the normal group was reduced(P<0.05), yet its mRNA level in lentivirus the infection group and the Astragalus group 2 was further reduced(P<0.01). Compared with that of the normal group, the mRNA contents of calumenin in the Astragalus group 1 was increased(P<0.05). The expression of calumenin in Astragalus group 2 was increased comparing with lentivirus infection group (P<0.01). ②Compared with that in the control group, the expression of reticulum stress chaperone in GRP78, GRP 94 in lentivirus infection group and normal group was significantly increased (P<0.01); Compared with that in the normal group, the expression of reticulum stress chaperone in GRP78, GRP94 in Astragalus group 1 was reduced(P<0.01); Compared with that in the lentivirus infection group, the expression of reticulum stress chaperone in GRP78, GRP94 in the Astragalus group 2 was obviously decreased(P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: ①Calumenin can alleviate endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by ADR-injured myocardial cells. ②Astragalus injection can restrain the endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by adriamycin, which may be achieved by the calumenin protein.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a condition that occurs during the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Effective therapy for NASH is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the effects of Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in the treatment of NASH. METHODS: Western and Chinese databases were searched by independent investigators using appropriate MESH headings to identify randomized, controlled Western and Chinese clinical trials, published between January 1990 and October 2012, testing the effects of UDCA in patients with NASH. Patient characteristics and trial endpoints were analyzed, with quality assessment according to widely acknowledged criteria. P < 0.05 was defined as statistically significant in all trials. RESULTS: Twelve qualified randomized clinical trials, including six from China and involving 1160 subjects, were selected. Seven of these trials assessed the effects of UDCA Monotherapy, with the other five testing combinations of UDCA with vitamin E, polyene phosphatidylcholine, silymarin, glycyrrhizin and tiopronin. The duration of therapy ranged from 3 to 24 months, with two studies using high doses of UDCA (23-35 mg/kg/d). The average quality point was 2.69, and was significantly lower in articles from China than in those from Western countries (2.2 ± 0.4 vs. 3.8 ± 1.1, respectively, p < 0.05). UDCA Monotherapy significantly improved liver function in five studies and improved steatosis and fibrosis in two studies. All five studies assessing UDCA combination therapy showed significant improvements liver function, while two studies also improved steatosis and inflammation. One study of high-dose UDCA showed significant improvements in ALT, γGT and liver fibrosis, whereas the other study showed no significant change in ALT and liver pathology. CONCLUSIONS: UDCA therapy is effective in NASH, especially when combined with other drugs. However, the low quality of these studies and the heterogeneity of their results precluded further meta-analysis. Additional carefully designed clinical trials are needed, especially in China.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and action mechanism of Shengjing Tablets in the treatment liquefaction. METHODS: We randomly assigned 150 patients with semen non-liquefaction to receive Shengjing Tablets group, n = 100) and vitamin E capsules (control group, n = 50) for 2 courses of 45 days each, followed by observation liquefaction time and other semen parameters. RESULTS: After the first course, 68 of the patients in the treatment group 20 responded and 12 failed to respond; and after the second course, 84 were cured, 9 responded and 7 failed to respond, effective rate of 93.0%. In comparison, only 8 of the controls were cured, 8 responded and 34 failed to respond after medication. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the treatment showed obvious improvement in sperm motility and concentration. CONCLUSION: Shengjing Tablets may shorten the time liquefaction, and can be used as a safe and effective therapy for semen non-liquefaction.
