RESUMO

Betaine is widely used as a feed additive in the chicken industry to promote laying performance and growth performance, yet it is unknown whether betaine can be used in geese to improve the laying performance of goose breeders and the growth traits of offspring goslings. In this study, laying goose breeders at 39 wk of age were fed basal (Control, CON) or betaine-supplemented diets at low (2.5 g/kg, LBT) or high (5 g/kg, HBT) levels for 7 wk, and the breeder eggs laid in the last week were collected for incubation. Offspring goslings were examined at 35 and 63 d of age. The laying rate tended to be increased (P = 0.065), and the feed efficiency of the breeders was improved by betaine supplementation, while the average daily gain of the offspring goslings was significantly increased (P < 0.05). Concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF-2) in serum and liver were significantly increased in the HBT group (P < 0.05), with age-dependent alterations of serum T3 levels. Concurrently, hepatic mRNA expression of the IGF gene family was significantly increased in goslings derived from betaine-treated breeders (P < 0.05). A higher ratio of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-immunopositive nuclei was found in the liver sections of the HBT group, which was confirmed by significantly upregulated hepatic expression of PCNA mRNA and protein (P < 0.05). Moreover, hepatic expression of thyroxine deiodinase type 1 (Dio1) and thyroid hormone receptor ß (TRß) was also significantly upregulated in goslings of the HBT group (P < 0.05). These changes were associated with significantly higher levels of global DNA 5-mC methylation, together with increased expression of methyl transfer genes (P < 0.05), including betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT), glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT), and DNA (cytosine-5-)-methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1). The promoter regions of IGF-2 genes, as well as the predicted TRß binding site on the IGF-2 gene, were significantly hypomethylated (P < 0.05). These results indicate that gosling growth can be improved by dietary betaine supplementation in goose breeders via epigenetic modulation of the IGF gene family, especially IGF-2, in the liver.

The goose industry plays important roles in economics, cultures, and ecosystems, yet the low laying and growth rates of many indigenous breeds hinders the development of the goose farming. Betaine, an important methyl donor, is commonly used as a feed additive in livestock and poultry to enhance animal growth. Dietary supplementation of betaine in laying hens or gestational sows has been reported to promote the growth of their offspring. Here, we sought to investigate whether and how dietary betaine supplementation affects the growth and development of offspring goslings. In this study, goose breeders, both male and female, were fed a basal diet supplemented respectively with 0, 2.5, or 5 g/kg betaine for 7 wk. Goslings hatched from the breeder eggs of different groups were raised under the same standard condition for assessing the growth performance. Parental betaine increases the growth rate of offspring goslings with decreased DNA methylation on the IGF-2 gene promoter and increased expression of the IGF-2 gene in the liver. These results provide scientific evidence for the inter-generational effect of betaine on gosling growth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer pain is one of the most intolerable and frightening symptoms of cancer patients. However, the clinical effect of the three-step analgesic ladder method (TSAL) is not satisfactory. The combination of external treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can improve the clinical effect. OBJECTIVE: This study used network meta-analysis to compare the effects of different external treatment methods of TCM combined with TSAL on cancer pain. METHODS: Databases searched by our team included Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. Randomized controlled trials related to the external treatment of TCM combined with TSAL for cancer pain were screened from the establishment of the database till now. The above literature extracted clinical efficacy, NRS score, KPS score, analgesic onset time, and duration as the main results after the screening. The 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of OR value and SMD value was used as the effect index to compare the difference in efficacy of different interventions, and the ranking was conducted. STATA 17.0 software was used for the statistical analysis of the above data. RESULTS: A total of 78 studies were included, including 8 interventions and 5742 participants. Based on ranking probability, the clinical effective rate of manual acupuncture combined with TSAL was the best when the intervention time was set at 4 weeks [OR = 5.42, 95% CI (1.99,14.81)], and the improvement effect on KPS score was also the best [SMD = 0.97, 95% CI (0.61, 1.33)]. Acupoint external application was the best intervention in reducing NRS score [SMD = -1.14, 95% CI (-1.90, -0.93)]. Acupoint moxibustion combined with TSAL was considered to be the most effective intervention to prolong the duration of analgesia [SMD = 1.69, 95% CI (0.84, 2.54)] and shortening the onset time of analgesia [SMD = -3.00, 95% CI (-4.54, -1.47)]. CONCLUSIONS: TSAL combined with manual acupuncture is the best in terms of clinical efficacy and improvement of patients' functional activity status. With the extension of treatment time, the intervention of this kind of treatment on the clinical effect is more pronounced. Acupoint external application also has a unique advantage in reducing the pain level of patients. From the point of view of analgesic duration and duration of analgesia, combined acupoint moxibustion has the best effect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in China for a long time and is gradually gaining more and more recognition worldwide. Gualou Guizhi Decoction (GGD) has long been used as a folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, but its bioactive components and therapeutic mechanisms are still unclear. METHODS: An integrated approach using network pharmacology and molecular docking and using methotrexate as a positive control drug. RESULTS: We obtained 157 active ingredients of GGD, 7542 RA disease targets and 49 intersecting targets. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that their functions were mainly related to cytokine active metal ion binding, enzyme binding and DNA binding, and enriched in TNF signaling pathway, T cell receptor signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, RA pathway and other signaling pathways that are closely related to RA. The molecular docking results show that the effector components of GGD bind better to the core targets of RA, and some are even better than methotrexate. CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effect of GGD for RA is achieved by affecting the core targets such as VEGFA, IL-1ß, IL6, CXCL8, CCL2, and JUN, which together interfere with the tumor necrosis factor signaling pathway and RA pathway to treat RA. The above study provides new ideas for further exploration of this classic formula in the future.

RESUMO

It is a common practice to provide fast-growing broilers with high-fat diets in the context of integrated farms in Northeast China. Therefore, fat digestion, absorption, and utilization efficiency are critical for broiler meat production. Bile acids (BA) promote fat digestion and absorption, but whether and how BA affects muscle growth in broilers remains unclear. In this study, 1-day-old broilers were fed diets containing varying levels of crude fat (low, medium, and high) with or without BA supplementation for 42 d. Chickens fed a high-fat diet supplemented with BA exhibited significantly (P < 0.05) higher body weight (BW) at 21 d and average daily gain (ADG) during the first 21 d compared to the other groups. Throughout the entire experiment, feed conversion rate (FCR) was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the high-fat group without the addition of BA, which was further decreased (P < 0.05) with BA supplementation. The improved growth performance in the BA-supplemented high-fat group was associated with significantly (P < 0.05) higher lipase activity in the small intestine chyme, a decreased trend (P = 0.06) in abdominal fat ratio, and significantly (P < 0.05) higher breast muscle mass. Histological analysis revealed significant (P < 0.05) increases in myofiber diameter, cross-sectional area, and RNA and DNA concentrations in the breast muscle of BA-supplemented broilers on the high-fat diet. Additional histological analysis further revealed significant (P < 0.05) enhancements in myofiber diameter, cross-sectional area, and RNA and DNA concentrations within the breast muscles of broilers supplemented with BA and a high-fat diet. The increased insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) in the breast muscle of broilers fed a BA-supplemented high-fat diet correlated with significantly (P < 0.05) increased farnesoid X factor (FXR) protein expression and binding to the IGF2 promoter. These results suggest that dietary BA supplementation improves FCR and breast muscle growth in broilers fed a high-fat diet, potentially through the FXR-mediated IGF2 pathway.

RESUMO

Although lakes dominated by macrophytes are conducive to ecological balance, this balance is easily disrupted by excessive nutrients flowing into the lake. However, knowledge of whether excessive nutrients lead to different microbial environmental vulnerabilities in the lake sediment between macrophyte-dominated areas and macrophyte-free areas is a prerequisite for the implementation of targeted protection measures. In this study, we investigated bacterial communities in sediments using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Our results showed that the sources of total nitrogen (TN) and organic matter (OM) were related to the macrophytes. The structure, drivers, and interspecific associations of bacterial community, which were more susceptible to increased changes in TN and OM, differed significantly between macrophyte-dominated areas and macrophyte-free areas. More precisely, the lake edge, where was occupied by macrophytes, had a higher proportion of deterministic phylogenetic turnover (88.89%) than other sites, as well as a wider ecological niche and a tighter network structure. Further, as the difference in TN increased, the main assembly processes in surface sediments changed from stochastic to deterministic. However, the majority of phyla from the lake edge showed a greater correlation with excessive nutrients, and the selection of the community by excessive nutrients was more obvious at the edge of the lake. In addition, our results demonstrated that the stability of the bacterial community in macrophyte-free areas is greater than in macrophyte-dominated areas, while an excessively high deterministic process ratio and nutrient (TN and OM) concentration significantly reduced bacterial community stability at macrophyte-dominated areas. Taken together, these results provide a better understanding of the effects of excessive nutrients derived from macrophytes on bacterial community patterns, and highlight the importance of avoiding the accumulation of TN and OM in macrophyte-dominated areas to enhance the sustainability of the ecosystem after restoration of lakes with macrophytes.

RESUMO

As a frequent disease affecting the nervous system, cerebral infarction has emerged as a major cause of disability and elicits disorders in motor, sensation, and cognition as sequelae. No clear mechanism has been known in meridian massage despite it having been proved to be an effective therapeutic option. The study was carried out to explore the treatment of meridian massage on cerebral ischemia in rats and its effects on motor function restoration and nerve cell's ultrastructure in the ischemic territory. The alleviated nerve damages and recovered injured brain tissues were found in the cerebral infarction model of SD rats after meridian massage. Expressions of miR-206 and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the gastrocnemius muscle were all well observed. The effects of miR-206 on BDNF were testified by overexpressed and interfered miR-206 in the C2C12 myoblast. Moreover, at the molecular level, meridian massage downregulated miR-206 expression at an elevated level of BDNF. Consequently, meridian massage exerts a vital role in promoting cerebral ischemia restoration, which is expected to provide an addition to the application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the reconstruction and treatment of cerebral ischemia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture therapy has a wide range of applications in obstetrics and gynecology, especially for patients with reproductive issues, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and pelvic inflammatory disease. In recent decades, acupuncture therapy has gradually attracted the attention of professionals in China and overseas due to its beneficial effects, and has been the focus of many studies. This study aimed to conduct a statistical analysis of the relevant literature to understand the current application and research status of acupuncture in obstetric and gynecologic diseases. METHODS: A search of the SCI-EXPANDED database in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) was performed. Search strategy included two formulas: #1 WC=Obstetrics & Gynecology, limited: index =SCI-EXPANDED time span=all years; #2 subject: (ACUPUNCTURE-MOXIBUSTION) OR subject: (ACUPUNCTURE) OR subject: (MOXIBUSTION), limited: index=SCI-EXPANDED time span=all years. The final result was acquired by searching #1 AND #2. CiteSpace software was used to analyze and visualize the annual distribution of articles, and the distributions of disciplines, countries/institutions, journals, and authors. Keywords were used to infer the application of acupuncture in obstetrics and gynecology. RESULTS: A total of 593 research literatures, including 323 original articles, were retrieved. Since 1972, the number of literatures has shown a general increase. Studies on reproductive medicine accounted for the highest proportion of the retrieved literatures (139, 23.44%). The United States (25.5%), China (14.0%), Germany (7.6%), Australia (7.3%), and Sweden (7.1%) were the main contributors. The centrality index showed that the United States (0.19), the United Kingdom (0.19), and Germany (0.16) had the closest cooperation. The retrieved literatures covered 15 subdivision areas, including menstruation, embryo transfer, production, and pelvic pain. Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology were found to be the most influential journals. The most frequently cited keywords were acupuncture (intensity =5.5326), low back pain (intensity =5.0506), and pregnancy (intensity =4.7016). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture is receiving an increasing amount of attention in obstetrics and gynecology, and international cooperation in research in this field is also increasing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in procoagulant activity (PCA) in stroke patients caused by thromboembolic occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) remains unclear. Our objectives were to evaluate the critical role of NETs in the induction of hypercoagulability in stroke and to identify the functional significance of NETs during atherothrombosis. METHODS: The levels of NETs, activated platelets (PLTs), and PLT-derived microparticles (PMPs) were detected in the plasma of 55 stroke patients and 35 healthy controls. NET formation and thrombi were analysed using immunofluorescence. Exposed phosphatidylserine (PS) was evaluated with flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. PCA was analysed using purified coagulation complex, thrombin, and fibrin formation assays. FINDINGS: The plasma levels of NETs, activated PLTs, and PMP markers in the carotid lesion site (CLS) were significantly higher than those in the aortic blood. NETs were decorated with PS in thrombi and the CLS plasma of ICA occlusion patients. Notably, the complementary roles of CLS plasma and thrombin-activated PLTs were required for NET formation and subsequent PS exposure. PS-bearing NETs provided functional platforms for PMPs and coagulation factor deposition and thus increased thrombin and fibrin formation. DNase I and lactadherin markedly inhibited these effects. In addition, NETs were cytotoxic to endothelial cells, converting these cells to a procoagulant phenotype. Sivelestat, anti-MMP9 antibody, and activated protein C (APC) blocked this cytotoxicity by 25%, 39%, or 52%, respectively. INTERPRETATION: NETs played a pivotal role in the hypercoagulability of stroke patients. Strategies that prevent NET formation may offer a potential therapeutic strategy for thromboembolism interventions. RESUMO

Norepinephrine exacerbates renal medullary hypoxia in experimental septic acute kidney injury. Here we examined whether dexmedetomidine, an α2-adrenergic agonist, can restore vasopressor responsiveness, decrease the requirement for norepinephrine and attenuate medullary hypoxia in ovine gram-negative sepsis. Sheep were instrumented with pulmonary and renal artery flow probes, and laser Doppler and oxygen-sensing probes in the renal cortex and medulla. Conscious sheep received an infusion of live Escherichia coli for 30 hours. Eight sheep in each group were randomized to receive norepinephrine, norepinephrine with dexmedetomidine, dexmedetomidine alone or saline vehicle, from 24-30 hours of sepsis. Sepsis significantly reduced the average mean arterial pressure (84 to 67 mmHg), average renal medullary perfusion (1250 to 730 perfusion units), average medullary tissue pO2 (40 to 21 mmHg) and creatinine clearance (2.50 to 0.78 mL/Kg/min). Norepinephrine restored baseline mean arterial pressure (to 83 mmHg) but worsened medullary hypoperfusion (to 330 perfusion units) and medullary hypoxia (to 9 mmHg). Dexmedetomidine (0.5 µg/kg/h) co-administration significantly reduced the norepinephrine dose (0.8 to 0.4 µg/kg/min) required to restore baseline mean arterial pressure, attenuated medullary hypoperfusion (to 606 perfusion units), decreased medullary tissue hypoxia (to 29 mmHg), and progressively increased creatinine clearance (to 1.8 mL/Kg/min). Compared with vehicle time-control, dexmedetomidine given alone significantly prevented the temporal reduction in mean arterial pressure, but had no significant effects on medullary perfusion and oxygenation or creatinine clearance. Thus, in experimental septic acute kidney injury, dexmedetomidine reduced norepinephrine requirements, attenuated its adverse effects on the renal medulla, and maintained renal function.

RESUMO

Wolfberry has important unique medical values as well as edible and commerce values. In this paper,we analyze the characteristics and problems of international trade of wolfberry based on the customs data between 2008 and 2017. During periods of these ten years, the wolfberry was mainly exported with a small proportions of imports. The total export volume increased steadily, reached 82 182. 08 tons and 696. 622 million dollars respectively. Wolfberry came from 31 provinces/autonomous regions and exported to 105 countries and regions through 21 ports. Most of the total exports of wolfberry flew to markets of Asia and Europe, the Ningxia autonomous region was the major export province. Large amount of wolfberry exported through Tianjin port. Compared with the export volume, the import is almost negligible, mainly coming from North Korea, almost all through Changchun port,Jilin province to enter the domestic market. There is a situation of"import of domestic goods". To enhance the international competitiveness of wolf berry industry,we must rely on the fundamental research of wolfberry, speed up the standardization process, strengthen the scientific and technological innovation in wolfberry products, improve the added value and profit of wolfberry.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Calcium supplementation is one of the most important factors in maintaining the safety and efficacy of regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The aims of this study were to assess the determinants of calcium requirements in RCA-CVVH and to simplify the calcium supplementation approach. METHODS: Our study consisted of two parts. The first part was a discovery phase to determine the key factors of calcium supplementation. Twenty critically ill patients who required RCA-CVVH were enrolled in this part. Systemic citrate, total calcium, protein-bound calcium, and ionized calcium concentrations were serially measured using the traditional RCA protocol. A two-phase calcium supplementation protocol was then proposed, and algorithms were developed for calcium supplementation. The second part of the study was the validation phase. Another 97 critically ill patients were enrolled and were treated with RCA-CVVH using the new version of the calcium supplementation protocol. FINDINGS: The loss of calcium flux in the extracorporeal circuit and the increase in citrate-calcium complexes in vivo were the main determinants of the required calcium supplementation. In the CVVH mode, the rate of calcium infusion had to be reduced after systemic citrate level reached a steady state. With the aid of mathematical models, systemic calcium levels could be stably maintained in the normal range, and the frequencies of calcium monitoring were reduced. DISCUSSION: Calcium supplementation during RCA-CVVH undergoes two phases. We propose mathematical models to quantify the need for calcium supplementation, which enable individualization of the RCA prescription and simplify the management of RCA in the CVVH mode.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It has been confirmed that regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) plays an effective role in extracorporeal anticoagulation. The current trial-and-error calcium supplementation approach, with intensive monitoring of calcium levels, restricts the widespread use of RCA. Therefore, this study aimed to optimize the calcium supplementation approach for RCA. METHODS: Patients requiring RCA treatment for various reasons were included. Citrate was infused into the arterial port, and the ionized calcium levels in the extracorporeal circulation tubes and body were monitored to maintain them within the target range. Linear regression equations between the clearance of non-protein bound calcium (n-Ca) and prescribed effluent rate were determined; the ratio of the n-Ca concentration to total calcium concentration (fa) after the infusion of citrate was also calculated. Then, we estimated a simplified calcium supplementation approach. RESULTS: Positive correlations were found between the clearance of n-Ca and effluent rate both during continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD) and continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH; R2: 0.66 and 0.65, respectively, p < 0.01). The fa values at the pre-filter point and after infusion of citrate were constants, but the values differed from CVVHD to CVVH. For CVVHD, fa was 0.93, and for CVVH, fa was 0.80. Using the extracorporeal removal characteristics of n-Ca, the amount of extracorporeally removed calcium per mmol per hour can be quantified with a simplified equation. CONCLUSION: The optimized calcium supplementation approach could provide a more precise and practical method to estimate the amount of extracorporeal calcium removal with regard to different modalities and dosages of RCA.

RESUMO

Selection of the appropriate method for traceability may be of great interest for the characterization of food authenticity and to reveal falsifications. The possibility of tracing the geographical origins of Radix Astragali based on diffuse reflectance mid-infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technique and fluorescence fingerprints (EEMs) technique was investigated in this work. DRIFTS technique combined with PCA and PLS-DA and EEMs technique combined with M-PCA and N-PLS-DA were used to determine the geographical origin of Radix Astragali samples, respectively. DRIFTS-PLS-DA provided total recognition rates of 98.4% for all Radix Astragali samples in the training sets and 94.6% in the predicted sets. Compared with the DRIFTS, EEMs combined with chemometrics obtained more accurate recognition results. The total recognition rates (RRs) of the training sets and prediction sets obtained with EEMs-N-PLS-DA were all 100%. The good classification results of fluorescence fingerprints technique should be attributed mainly to two reasons. One reason is that three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum can provide more information than two-dimensional DRIFTS, and the other reason is that fluorescence spectrum has higher sensitivity and selectivity than the DRIFTS. Therefore, fluorescence fingerprint (EEMs) technique combined with chemometrics results more adequate for tracing the food geographical origin. It should be noted that the more the analysis target contains fluorescent substances, the more accurate results are obtained by using the fluorescent fingerprint method. Conversely, if the classification object contains very few fluorescent substances, the classification result may not be as good as the DRIFTS method. Furthermore, due to relatively cumbersome operation of fluorescence method, EEMs fluorescence method is unsuitable for rapid analysis as compared to infrared method.

RESUMO

Poria cocos is one of medical materials frequently used in China and well marketed at home and abroad. Based on the analysis of exports and imports data of P. cocos, we found that large proportions of P. cocos were exported, while only a small proportions of those were imported in China between 2011 and 2016. During periods of these six years, the annual exporting trade of P. cocos in quantity significantly decreased, but that in dollars tend to increase slightly and the unit-prices of P. cocos significantly increased. Statistically, the average annual export trade of P. cocos from 2011 to 2016 in quantity and dollars were 9 279.73 tons and 35.454 million dollars, respectively. And the average annual export in unit-price was 4.14 dollars per kilogram. In total, P. cocos came from 29 provinces and exported to 44 countries through 21 ports. More than 98% of total exports of P. cocos were flew to the markets of countries in Asia, of which Hong Kong was the major partner in import trade of P. cocos. Large amount of P. cocos came from Guangdong province and exported mainly through Shenzhen port. Except the exports, China also imports P. cocos from other countries, among which Korea was the major country exports largest amount of P. cocos to China. And most of P. cocos were imported by Jilin province and mainly through Changchun port. To improve the export kinetic, quality and profits of P. cocos, and thus enhance the international competitiveness of the industry of P. cocos, Chinese governments should emphasize the researches on the products of P. cocos, broaden the demand space of the high-end customers, stimulate the high-end market grow in high speed and accelerate the process of standardization in future.

RESUMO

Licorice is an important harmonic drug which has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine since ancient times. However, with the increasing demand of industrial production, the licorice resources in our country have been reduced rapidly and we have to import licorice resources from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan consequently. In order to find out the trade flow of licorice resources and evaluate the status of Chinese licorice in the world trade, the trade situation of licorice and its products from 2011 to 2015 May in Chinese customs was investigated and analyzed in this paper. The import and export volumes of licorice were declining; the import and export volumes of licorice were relatively concentrated in international trade, with greater risks of trade; and export quota management was not well executed. As one of the strategic resources of medicine, licorice resources must be based on domestic development, and we should adjust the export quota management from passive quota to active quota management and improve the intrinsic value of licorice resources to establish the international market position of our licorice and control the pricing power in international market.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy difference between the mild moxibustion and acupuncture stimulation at trigger points in the treatment of shoulder and back myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), so as to provide a reference for clinical treatment of MPS. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with shoulder and back MPS were equally and randomly divided into mild moxibustion group and acupuncture group. The myofascial trigger points in the shoulder and back regions were stimulated with mild moxibustion for 20-100 min every time or punctured with filiform needles by retaining the needles for 30 min after twirling for a while. The treatment was conducted once daily for 10 days. The short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) including the pain rating index[PRI consisting of 15 descriptors (11 sensory, 4 affective) which are rated on an intensity scale as 0=none, 1=mild, 2=moderate and 3=severe], present pain intensity (PPI) index of the standard MPQ and a visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the patient's pain severity before and after the treatment. RESULTS: Following the treatment, of the two 30 cases of MPS patients in the acupuncture and mild moxibustion groups, 1 and 7 were cured, 11 and 17 experienced marked improvement, 14 and 5 were effective, 4 and 1 was invalid, with the effective rates being 86.7% (26/30) and 96.7%(29/30), respectively. The cured plus markedly effective rate of the mild moxibustion group was significantly better than that of the acupuncture group(P<0.001). Self-comparison of the two groups showed that the scores of PRI, VAS and PPI after the treatment were apparently reduced in both groups compared with pre-treatment (P<0.001), but without significant differences between the two groups in the PRI, VAS and PPI scores after the treatment (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mild moxibustion stimulation of myofascial trigger point is effective in relieving shoulder-back MPS, being comparable to that of acupuncture therapy.

RESUMO

Recent evidence suggests a potential pro-diabetic effect of selenite treatment in type 2 diabetics; however, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here we investigated the effects and the underlying mechanisms of selenite treatment in a nongenetic mouse model of type 2 diabetes. High-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice were orally gavaged with selenite at 0.5 or 2.0mg/kg body weight/day or vehicle for 4 weeks. High-dose selenite treatment significantly elevated fasting plasma insulin levels and insulin resistance index, in parallel with impaired glucose tolerance, insulin tolerance and pyruvate tolerance. High-dose selenite treatment also attenuated hepatic IRS1/Akt/FoxO1 signaling and pyruvate kinase gene expressions, but elevated the gene expressions of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxyl kinase (PEPCK), glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase), peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) and selenoprotein P (SelP) in the liver. Furthermore, high-dose selenite treatment caused significant increases in MDA contents, protein carbonyl contents, and a decrease in GSH/GSSG ratio in the liver, concurrent with enhanced ASK1/MKK4/JNK signaling. Taken together, these findings suggest that high-dose selenite treatment exacerbates hepatic insulin resistance in mouse model of type 2 diabetes, at least in part through oxidative stress-mediated JNK pathway, providing new mechanistic insights into the pro-diabetic effect of selenite in type 2 diabetes.

RESUMO

"Conducting yang from yin, and conducting yin from yang" is the essential principle of acupuncture and moxibustion in treatment of diseases, originated from Neijing (Internal Classic). In clinical, yin and yang are not just limited as the natures of meridians and zangfu organs, but also refer to the locations of acupoints, such as the upper and the lower, the left and the right, the anterior and the posterior, the exterior and the interior. Besides, they include the time of acupuncture, such as four seasons and midnight-midday ebb flow, and the manipulation of acupuncture, etc. The ultimate goal of acupuncture is to regulate yin and yang.
