Background: Vitamin D deficiency is widely prevalent among the elderly, posing significant health risks. This study aims to determine the global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted, examining databases including Scientific Information Database (SID), Medline (PubMed), ScienceDirect, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar until January 2023. The publication bias of the studies was assessed using the I2 test of heterogeneity and the Egger test. Results: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, defined as levels below 20 ng or 50 nmol was found to be 59.7% (95% CI 45.9-72.1). Furthermore, a review of six studies involving 6748 elderly individuals showed a prevalence of 27.5% (95% CI 21.8-34.1) for deficiency defined between 20 and 30 ng or 50-75 nmol. Additionally, a meta-analysis of seven studies with a sample size of 6918 elderly individuals reported a prevalence of 16% (95% CI 10.2-24.1) for deficiency defined above 30 nmol or 75 nmol. Conclusion: The results of the present study reveal that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the elderly is high and requires the attention of health policymakers at the World Health Organization to prioritize extensive information dissemination and screening to mitigate the adverse effects on their quality of life. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic T-cell-mediated disease that can cause significant pain, particularly in its erosive or ulcerative forms. This study aimed to examine the therapeutic impact of curcumin on symptoms of OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This meta-analysis was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. All related English documents indexed in electronic databases (including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, Wiley, Cochrane, and ProQuest databases [updated to August 15, 2023]) were retrieved. Data were double-extracted into a predefined worksheet, and quality analysis was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scale. We carried out meta-analyses, and the random effects model was used to estimate the differences in erythema, lesion size, and pain between the curcumin control groups. RESULTS: The search identified 289 studies, of which 10 were found to meet the inclusion criteria. The overall findings of the meta-analysis revealed that curcumin did not have a significant effect on erythema of OLP (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.14; 95% CI, -0.68 to 0.40; P = 0.61; I2 = 57.50%), lesion size of OLP (SMD = -0.15; 95% CI, -0.45 to 0.15; P = 0.33; I2 = 28.42%), and pain of OLP (SMD = -0.38; 95% CI, -0.97 to 0.22; P = 0.22; I2 = 86.60%). However, subgroup analysis based on treatment duration indicated that 2-week treatment duration was significantly associated with a reduction in OLP pain (n = 3; SMD = -1.21; 95% CI, -2.19 to -0.23; P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Curcumin had no significant effect on erythema, lesion size, and pain of OLP compared to the control groups. However, subgroup analysis revealed that curcumin was more effective in reducing pain in non-randomized trials and in trials with a treatment duration of 2 weeks.

Background and aims: Diabetes mellitus (DM) may have different adverse effects on the male reproductive system. Zinc (Zn) is one of the necessary elements in the human and mammalian diet that plays an important role in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) by providing antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of zinc supplements on sperm chromatin and the evaluation of sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) integrity in diabetic men. Methods: In this interventional study, 43 infertile Iranian men in diabetic and non-diabetic groups were included. They were then randomly divided into two subgroups: normal saline intake and zinc sulfate intake (25 mg orally for 64 days each). Different indices of sperm analysis (number, morphology and motility) and testosterone levels were evaluated in four groups. Protamine deficiency and DNA fragmentation were assessed using chromomycin A3 (CMA3) and sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) methods, respectively. Results: Zinc supplementation reduced the deformity of neck and head of sperms (p < 0.05), as well as deformity of sperm tail in infertile diabetic men. Zinc administration ameliorated sperm motility types A, B and C (p < 0.05). Moreover, zinc administration reduced abnormal morphology and DNA fragmentation of sperms, which increased the SCD1 and SCD2 and reduced the SCD3 and SCD4 in both treated groups. Conclusion: Zinc supplementation, as a powerful complement, is able to balance the effect of diabetes on sperm parameters, sperm chromatin and DNA integrity. Consequently, zinc supplementation can probably be considered a supportive compound in the diet of diabetic infertile men.

BACKGROUND: In artificial reproductive technique (ART), nearly 20% of human oocytes are immature in the germinal vesicle (GV) phase. Consequently, the best method for reserving them is cryopreserving GV oocytes, and in vitro maturation (IVM) is recommended. The aim of this study was to determine the ultrastructure characteristics of fresh and vitrified immature human oocytes after in vitro maturation in conditioned mediums. METHODS: This study was a comparative laboratory study carried out in 2018 at Afzalipur Infertility Center in Kerman. 170 fresh and 198 vitrified GV oocytes were cultured within three IVM mediums; α-mem as control medium, α-mem supplemented with human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and α-mem supplemented with ovarian growth factors (O.F). After 48 h, the maturation rate and morphological feature of IVM oocytes [132 fresh IVM (fIVM) and 134 vitrified IVM (vIVM)] were evaluated. For the ultrastructure study, 10 IVM oocytes from each medium were compared with 10 fresh in vivo oocytes cancelled from ART. RESULTS: The survival rate of vitrified GV oocyte after thawing was 88.88%. The oocyte maturation rate was reduced in vIVM compared to the fIVM group (76.33% vs. 77.95%); the highest oocyte maturation rate in the O.F fIVM and lowest in α-mem vIVM (82.35% vs. 71.42%). The lowest number of cortical granules was observed in α-mem vIVM, but the greatest presence of M-SER aggregates was in O.F fIVM. In vIVM oocytes, the oolemma contained irregular little microvillus organization. CONCLUSIONS: The O.F mediums have shown the highest maturation which defends the oocyte ultra-structural conservation.

Chemotherapy is the most common treatment strategy for cancer patients. Nevertheless, limited drug delivery to cancer cells, intolerable toxicity, and multiple drug resistance are constant challenges of chemotherapy. Novel targeted drug delivery strategies by using nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to reducing side effects and increasing drug efficacy. Therefore, the most important outcome of this study is to answer the question of whether active targeted HA-based drug nanocarriers have a significant effect on improving drug delivery to cancer cells.This study aimed to systematically review studies on the use of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based nanocarriers for chemotherapy drugs. The two databases MagIran and SID from Persian databases as well as international databases PubMed, WoS, Scopus, Science Direct, Embase, as well as Google Scholar were searched for human studies and cell lines and/or xenograft mice published without time limit until 2020. Keywords used to search included Nanoparticle, chemotherapy, HA, Hyaluronic acid, traditional medicine, natural medicine, chemotherapeutic drugs, natural compound, cancer treatment, and cancer. The quality of the studies was assessed by the STROBE checklist. Finally, studies consistent with inclusion criteria and with medium- to high-quality were included in the systematic review.According to the findings of studies, active targeted HA-based drug nanocarriers showed a significant effect on improving drug delivery to cancer cells. Also, the use of lipid nanoparticles with a suitable coating of HA have been introduced as biocompatible drug carriers with high potential for targeted drug delivery to the target tissue without affecting other tissues and reducing side effects. Enhanced drug delivery, increased therapeutic efficacy, increased cytotoxicity and significant inhibition of tumor growth, as well as high potential for targeted chemotherapy are also reported to be benefits of using HA-based nanocarriers for tumors with increased expression of CD44 receptor.

BACKGROUND: Labor pain is one of the most severe pains, which most of women experience. By using novel supportive methods, the labor pain can be reduced, which makes this event pleasant and delightful. Several original studies have been conducted in regard to the effect of lavender on reducing labor pain, whose results are controversial. One of the applications of meta-analysis studies is to respond to these hypotheses and remove controversies; therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of lavender on labor pain in Iran by using meta-analysis. METHODS: In this study, to find published articles electronically from 2006 to 2019, the published articles in national and international databases of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science (ISI) were used. Heterogenic index between studies was determined by Cochrane test (Q)c and I 2. Due to heterogeneity, the random effects model was used to estimate standardize difference of the mean score of lavender test in order to assess the labor pain between intervention and control group. RESULTS: In this meta-analysis and systematic review, finally 13 eligible articles met the inclusion criteria of the study. The sample size from original studies enrolled in the meta-analysis entered in the intervention group was 794 individuals and in the control group was 795 individuals. Mean score for pain in the control group was 7.2 ± 0.42 and in the intervention group was 5.4 ± 0.58 and this difference was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that lavender can reduce labor pain, which can be considered by health policy makers and gynecologists.

BACKGROUND: Curcumin is herbal compound that has been shown to have anti-cancer effects in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The anti-cancer effects of curcumin include inhibiting the carcinogenesis, inhibiting angiogenesis, and inhibiting tumour growth. This study aims to determine the Clinical effects of curcumin in different types of cancers using systematic review approach. METHODS: A systematic review methodology is adopted for undertaking detailed analysis of the effects of curcumin in cancer therapy. The results presented in this paper is an outcome of extracting the findings of the studies selected from the articles published in international databases including SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (ISI). These databases were thoroughly searched, and the relevant publications were selected based on the plausible keywords, in accordance with the study aims, as follows: prevalence, curcumin, clinical features, cancer. RESULTS: The results are derived based on several clinical studies on curcumin consumption with chemotherapy drugs, highlighting that curcumin increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiotherapy which results in improving patient's survival time, and increasing the expression of anti-metastatic proteins along with reducing their side effects. CONCLUSION: The comprehensive systematic review presented in this paper confirms that curcumin reduces the side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, resulting in improving patients' quality of life. A number of studies reported that, curcumin has increased patient survival time and decreased tumor markers' level.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two doses of cyclohexane extract of walnut leaves on total homocysteine, lipids profiles, and indices of oxidative stress including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal (IP) injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg BW). Twenty-eight male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, group I: control (received sesame oil as vehicle), group II: diabetic control (received sesame oil), group III and IV: diabetic rats treated by 150 and 250 mg/kg body weight (BW) per day extract of walnut leaves, respectively. All groups were treated for 28 days via oral gavage. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) level and body weight measured before injection, 3 days after injection, and on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of treatment. At the end the 28th day of the experiment, blood samples collected via heart puncture and the sera were used for estimation of the above-mentioned parameters. The results showed a decrease in FBS, TC, TG, LDL-c, VLDL-c, homocysteine, and MDA level and increase in the level of HDL-c in diabetics treated by walnut leave extracts in a dose-dependent manner after 28 days. The activity of antioxidant enzymes significantly increased in treated groups compared with diabetic control. It can be concluded that cyclohexane extract of walnut leaves has an overall beneficial effect on body weight, fasting blood glucose, lipids profile, antioxidant enzyme activities, and homocysteine.
