Root-associated bacteria play a vital role in the soil ecosystem and plant productivity. Previous studies have reported the decline of bacterial community and rhizosphere soil quality in the cultivation of some medicinal plants (i.e., Pseudostellaria heterophylla). Phosphorus (P)-modified biochar has the potential to improve soil health and quality. However, its influence on the bacterial community and diversity in the rhizosphere of medicinal plants is not well understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of P-modified biochar on the bacterial community and diversity in the rhizosphere of P. heterophylla. Soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of 4-month P. heterophylla under control (no biochar), 3% unmodified and 3% P-modified biochar treatments, respectively. Compared with control and unmodified biochar treatment, P-modified biochar significantly increased the relative abundance of plant-beneficial bacteria (P < 0.05), particularly Firmicutes, Nitrospirae and Acidobacteria. The relative abundance of Bacillus, belonging to Firmicutes, was dramatically raised from 0.032% in control group to 1.723% in P-modified biochar-treated group (P < 0.05). These results indicate the potential enhancement of soil quality for the growth of medicinal plants. The application of biochar significantly increased bacterial richness and bacterial diversity (P < 0.05). P modification of biochar did not have significant effects on soil bacterial richness (P > 0.05), while it reduced Shannon and increased Simpson diversity index of soil bacterial communities significantly (P < 0.05). It indicates a decrease in bacterial diversity. This research provides a new perspective for understanding the role of P-modified biochar in the rhizosphere ecosystem.

Although flavonoids play multiple roles in plant growth and development, the involvement in plant self-incompatibility (SI) have not been reported. In this research, the fertility of transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing the Ginkgo biloba dihydroflavonol 4-reductase gene, GbDFR6, were investigated. To explore the possible physiological defects leading to the failure of embryo development in transgenic tobacco plants, functions of pistils and pollen grains were examined. Transgenic pistils pollinated with pollen grains from another tobacco plants (either transgenic or wild-type), developed full of well-developed seeds. In contrast, in self-pollinated transgenic tobacco plants, pollen-tube growth was arrested in the upper part of the style, and small abnormal seeds developed without fertilization. Although the mechanism remains unclear, our research may provide a valuable method to create SI tobacco plants for breeding.

The effects of biochemical components and processing variables (e.g., temperatures, solid-liquid ratio, ethanol concentration, and time) during fast hydrothermal liquefaction of a highly CO2-tolerant microalgae (Micractinium sp.) on the product yields and biofuel quality were explored using response surface methodology coupled with central composite design. Results showed that the maximum bio-oil yield (51.4 %) was obtained at 321 °C for 49 min at ethanol concentration of 75 % and solid-liquid ratio of 15.3 %. Among different studied parameters, ethanol concentration showed the highest significant impact on the bio-oil yield due to the low P-value and high F-value in ANOVA analysis. Furthermore, the chemical compositions of bio-oils were determined, which showed that the increase of ethanol concentration in the solvent not only increased the bio-oil yield but also promoted the bio-oil quality by reduction of carboxylic acids and nitrogen-containing compounds with simultaneous enhancement of esters in the bio-oil. The present results show that fast hydrothermal liquefaction is a promising approach to convert the microalgae into high quality biofuels rich in esters.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency in agricultural soil is a worldwide concern. P modification of biochar, a common soil conditioner produced by pyrolysis of wastes and residues, can increase P availability and improve soil quality. This study aims to investigate the effects of P-modified biochar as a soil amendment on the growth and quality of a medicinal plant (Pseudostellaria heterophylla). P. heterophylla were grown for 4 months in lateritic soil amended with P-modified and unmodified biochar (peanut shell) at dosages of 0, 3% and 5% (by mass). Compared with unmodified biochar, P-modified biochar reduced available heavy metal Cd in soil by up to 73.0% and osmotic suction in the root zone by up to 49.3%. P-modified biochar application at 3% and 5% promoted the tuber yield of P. heterophylla significantly by 68.6% and 136.0% respectively. This was different from that in unmodified biochar treatment, where tuber yield was stimulated at 3% dosage but inhibited at 5% dosage. The concentrations of active ingredients (i.e., polysaccharides, saponins) in tuber were increased by 2.9-78.8% under P-modified biochar amendment compared with control, indicating the better tuber quality. This study recommended the application of 5% P-modified biochar for promoting the yield and quality of P. heterophylla.

The contamination of Cd and Cu in soil is a great threat to medicinal plant. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is a potential soil pH adjuster to reduce metal toxicity. However, how GGBS affects the quality and yield of herbal plants under the stress of Cd and Cu is not clear. This study aims to investigate the quality and yield of a medicinal plant (Pseudostellaria heterophylla) responding to GGBS treatment in Cd and Cu contaminated soil. GGBS with three mass percentages (0%, 3%, 5%) was added into contaminated lateritic soils for planting. Each condition had 21 replicated seedlings. The concentrations of Cd and Cu in plant, amounts of active ingredients (polysaccarides and saponins) in medicinal organ, and tuber properties were measured after harvest. The results showed that under 3% and 5% GGBS treatments, Cd and Cu accumulations in all plant organs (leaf, stem, root and tuber) were reduced by 69.4-86.0% and 10.3-30.1%, respectively. They were below the permissible limits (World Health Organization, WHO). Even though the concentrations of active ingredients in P. heterophylla tuber decreased by up to 35.8%, they still met Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica standard. Besides, the biomass of root tuber increased by 9.8% and 46%, due to 3% and 5% GGBS treatments, respectively. The recommended 5% GGBS treatment in practice can balance the reduction of active ingredients and the increase of plant yield when minimizing Cd and Cu accumulation in tuber.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, safety, and preliminary effect of a 12-week multi-modal rehabilitation program targeted at improving health-related quality of life and physical activity levels of patients with lung cancer following treatment. METHODS: Patients with stage I to IIIA non-small cell lung cancer were included 6 to 12 weeks following completion of treatment. The intervention comprised of aerobic exercise (brisk walking), resistance training and 8-style Tai Chi. The 12-week program included 2 supervised center-based sessions per week of 90 minutes duration and home-based exercise. The primary outcomes were the feasibility and safety of the intervention. Secondary outcomes (assessed pre and post program) were physical and patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients were approached during the 6-month recruitment period and 17 (22%) consented to the study. Eight participants (47%) met the definition of adherence to the program (attending at least 70% of supervised sessions). No serious adverse events occurred. A significant reduction in anxiety and depression was observed post-program. In addition, improvements in respiratory function, sleep quality, and some health-related quality of life domains were observed post-program. There were no significant differences in functional capacity or physical activity levels. CONCLUSION: This multi-modal exercise training program was safe, although the feasibility of the program in its current state is not supported given the low consent rate and low adherence to the intervention.

Nicotiana tabacum, Stemona japonica, and Cnidium monnieri are common plants that are widely used for their anti-parasitic properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acaricidal activity of extracts from these plants against the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. A composition analysis of crude extracts by GC-MS was conducted to discover compounds with acaricidal effects. The toxicity of extraction against the engorged nymphs of R. sanguineus was evaluated by an immersion test. The results showed that the crude extracts of S. japonica and C. monnieri in varying ratios, concentrations, and from different extraction methods, had a killing effect on R. sanguineus. Lethality reached 76.67% ± 0.04410 when using a 1:1 extract of S. japonica:C. monnieri in 75% ethanol with ultrasonic extraction; the crude extract was determined at a concentration of 0.5 g/mL. GC-MS results showed that osthole and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) are the main components of the extract. These results suggested that ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) extracts contained acaricidal components acting against R. sanguineus, which may result in the development of effective extracts of S. japonica and C. monnieri as a source of low-toxicity, plant-based, natural acaricidal drugs.

Landfill cover is a barrier that can reduce landfill gas emission. Vegetation could affect soil hydraulic properties of landfill cover, while its effects on gas permeability is not well understood. This paper investigated the effects of plant roots on the evolution of gas permeability (kg) in unsaturated landfill cover over a two-year period. One grass species (Cynodon dactylon) was selected for testing in the laboratory and there were six replications. Bare soil was used as a reference. kg was determined after 6, 15 and 24 months of grass growth. The test results show that with the increase of suction, kg increased linearly in log scale for both bare and grass-covered soils. kg of grass-covered can be lower or higher than that of bare soil, depending on the plant age. After 6 months, kg of grass-covered soil was smaller than that of bare soil by 85%, due to the root occupancy of soil pore space. However, after 15 and 24 months, kg of grass-covered soil increased by 2-3 orders of magnitude within the root zone over the suction range considered (2-86 kPa). After 2 years, kg of grass-covered soil was up to one order of magnitude higher than that in bare soil. It implies that mature vegetation is not beneficial for reducing gas emission in final landfill covers.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to measure symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Chinese patients following a new diagnosis of lung cancer. Secondary aims were to explore factors at diagnosis that may predict PTSD symptoms at 6 months. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal observational study that included 93 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer. PTSD symptomology was assessed using the PTSD Checklist Civilian Version (PCL-C) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed with the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire. Measures were completed at diagnosis and 6 months. RESULTS: No patient had PTSD at baseline or 6 months as measured by a score of ⩾50 in the PCL-C. However, at diagnosis, 44% of patients had "mild" symptoms of PTSD. At 6 months, 64% of patients had "mild" and 8% had "moderate" PTSD symptoms. PTSD symptom scores significantly worsened over 6 months (mean difference [95% CI] = 7.2 [5.4 to 9.0]). Six months after diagnosis, higher PTSD scores were seen in people who at diagnosis were younger ( P = .003), had a lower smoking pack history ( P = .012), displayed less sedentary behavior ( P < .005), or initially had worse cancer symptoms, including fatigue ( P = .001) and poorer HRQoL ( P = .004). CONCLUSIONS: Mild PTSD symptoms are common in patients with lung cancer 6 months after treatment; however, a full diagnosis of PTSD is uncommon. Screening for PTSD symptoms may be considered for at-risk patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer.

In this study, a bacterial strain exhibiting high selenite (Na2SeO3) tolerance and reduction capacity was isolated from the gut of Monochamus alternatus larvae and identified as Alcaligenes faecalis Se03. The isolate exhibited extreme tolerance to selenite (up to 120 mM) when grown aerobically. In the liquid culture medium, it was capable of reducing nearly 100% of 1.0 and 5.0 mM Na2SeO3 within 24 and 42 h, respectively, leading to the formation of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). Electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated that A. faecalis Se03 produced spherical electron-dense SeNPs with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 273.8 ± 16.9 nm, localized mainly in the extracellular space. In vitro selenite reduction activity and real-time PCR indicated that proteins such as sulfite reductase and thioredoxin reductase present in the cytoplasm were likely to be involved in selenite reduction and the SeNPs synthesis process in the presence of NADPH or NADH as electron donors. Finally, using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, protein and lipid residues were detected on the surface of the biogenic SeNPs. Based on these observations, A. faecalis Se03 has the potential to be an eco-friendly candidate for the bioremediation of selenium-contaminated soil/water and a bacterial catalyst for the biogenesis of SeNPs.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) has been reported to exhibit potent anti-inflammatory activity. However, the development of anti-inflammatory agent based on CGA has not been investigated. In this paper, a series of caffeoyl salicylate compounds derived from CGA were designed, synthesized, and evaluated by LPS-induced nitric oxide synthase inhibition and QRT-PCR technique. Most compounds showed modest activity to inhibit production of nitric oxide (NO) in RAW 264.7 cells induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Among these compounds, QRT-PCR and western blotting results indicated that compounds 6b, 6c, 6f, 6g and D104 that possess 5-member ring or 6-member ring caused a significant inhibition against expression of the iNOS2 in LPS-induced macrophages. In addition, cytotoxic assay displayed most derivatives have good safety in vitro. This new promising scaffold could be further exploited for the development of anti-inflammatory agent in the future.

Sapium sebiferum, an ornamental and bio-energetic plant, is propagated by seed. Its seed coat contains germination inhibitors and takes a long time to stratify for germination. In this study, we discovered that the S. sebiferum seed coat (especially the tegmen) and endospermic cap (ESC) contained high levels of proanthocyanidins (PAs). Seed coat and ESC removal induced seed germination, whereas exogenous application with seed coat extract (SCE) or PAs significantly inhibited this process, suggesting that PAs in the seed coat played a major role in regulating seed germination in S. sebiferum. We further investigated how SCE affected the expression of the seed-germination-related genes. The results showed that treatment with SCE upregulated the transcription level of the dormancy-related gene, gibberellins (GAs) suppressing genes, abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and signalling genes. SCE decreased the transcript levels of ABA catabolic genes, GAs biosynthesis genes, reactive oxygen species genes and nitrates-signalling genes. Exogenous application of nordihydroguaiaretic acid, gibberellic acid, hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate recovered seed germination in seed-coat-extract supplemented medium. In this study, we highlighted the role of PAs, and their interactions with the other germination regulators, in the regulation of seed dormancy in S. sebiferum.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity (PA) is important in lung cancer. OBJECTIVES: To investigate PA levels and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with lung cancer in China and compare this to a similar cohort in Australia. METHODS: Prospective cohort study. 71 patients from China (group CH) and 90 patients from Australia (group AU) with newly diagnosed lung cancer. Questionnaires assessed self-reported PA levels and HRQoL at baseline (diagnosis) and 8 weeks. RESULTS: At baseline, group CH were engaged in less overall PA than group AU (Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly [PASE] total score: median [IQR] group CH, 56 [32-59]; group AU, 66 [38-116]; P < .005), and less occupational and household activity ( P < .005). However, at baseline, group CH reported significantly more walking time than group AU (median [IQR]: group CH, 210 [150-315] min/wk; group AU, 55[0-210] min/wk; P < .0005). Global HRQoL scores were similar between groups (P = .038). Over 8 weeks, group CH increased their overall PA levels ( P < .005) and walking time ( P = .008), and HRQoL remained unchanged. The comparison group AU experienced a reduction in PA levels ( P = .02) and HRQoL ( P < .005). CONCLUSIONS: A diagnosis, patients in China were less physically active than those in Australia. Following diagnosis, patients in China increased their PA levels, whereas those in Australia reduced their PA levels. Research is required to explore potential reasons behind differences, and this may inform research/clinical services to facilitate patients with lung cancer to be more active.

The extract of ginkgo leaves showed positive effects on treatments of many diseases, and has been used clinically worldwide. Considering the fact that flavonoids are the main bioactive components in the extract of ginkgo leaves, it is very important to investigate the flavonoid biosynthesis in ginkgo leaves. In this paper, we first reviewed the research progress of flavonoid biosynthesis in different plants, and introduced the flavonoid biosynthesis related genes discovered in ginkgo. Then, several cases of ginkgo researches using high throughput sequencing technology were described in detail. In addition, as an important research area in ginkgo, the changes of flavonoid content and the expression of corresponding genes were discussed. Specifically, our latest results were described. At last, we prospected the development of research area in flavonoid biosynthesis in ginkgo.

Objective To observe the long-term effect of tonifying Shen, activating blood stasis, dispelling wind-dampness (TSABSDWD) combined with Western drugs (WD) for IgA nephropathy. Methods A single center retrospective case-control study was used. The clinical and laboratory examinations, pa- thology of renal biopsy, and treatment programs of IgA nephropathy were obtained from primary IgA ne- phropathy patients (confirmed from renal biopsy at authors' hospital) from Jan 1st, 2008 to Dec 31 , 2008. Patients were assigned to Group A (basic treatment +Chinese herbs) and Group B (basic treatment +Chi- nese herbs + glucocorticoid and/or immune inhibitors). A follow-up visit started from the confirmation of re- nal biopsy to Dec 31, 2008, for at least 12 months. The end point event was defined as entering end stage renal disease (ESRD), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decreased by more than 50%, or SCr was doubled. The differences in clinical manifestations, lab indicators and etc. were compared between be- fore treatment and after 1 year of treatment/till the end of follow-ups. The accumulative kidney survival rate was calculated using Kaplan-Meier method. The curve for accumulative kidney survival rate was drawn. Re- sults A total of 219 cases were included, 49 in Group A and 170 in Group B. In Group A, there were 7 pa- tients (14.0%) with Shen deficiency syndrome, 21 cases (43.0%) with Shen deficiency blood stasis syn- drome, 8 (16. 0%) with Shen deficiency wind-dampness syndrome, 13 cases (27. 0%) with Shen deficien- cy blood stasis wind-dampness syndrome. In Group B there were 12 patients (7.1%) with Shen deficiency syndrome, 47 cases (27. 6%) with Shen deficiency blood stasis syndrome, 22 (12.9%) with Shen defi- ciency wind-dampness syndrome, 89 cases (52.4%) with Shen deficiency blood stasis wind-dampness syndrome. No statistical difference in age, sex, or follow-up period between the two groups (P >0.05). Compared with Group A, the disease courser was shorter, 24 h urination increased more, levels of SCr and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) increased higher, plasma albumin decreased lower in Group B (P <0. 05). Compared with before treatment, 24 h urination and counts of urinary red blood cells (RBCs) decreased more in the two groups after 1-year treatment, and decreased further till the end of follow-up (P <0. 05). The total effective rate was 89. 0% (1951219). The total effective rate of Group A was 89. 8% (44/49), with no patient entry into endpoint event. The total effective rate of Group B was 88. 8%(151/170). Totally 5 pa- tients arrived at endpoint event in Group B, 4 in ESRD, 1 with eGFR decreased by more than 50%, or SCr doubled. Compared with Group B, the complete relief rate was higher in Group A (P <0. 01). The accumulative kidney survival rate was 100. 0%, 100. 0%, 98. 0% and 96. 1% in the 219 patients at year 1 , 3, 5, 7, re- spectively using Kaplan-Meier method. Conclusions Programs based on theory of Shen disease wind- dampness in CM and in integrative medicine could be used in treating IgA nephropathy according to differ- ent conditions. Long-term observation showed this program could significantly improve patients' conditions. The 7-year accumulative kidney survival rate was 96. 1%.

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC­MSCs) hold great potential in the search for therapies to treat refractory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), due to their potential regenerative ability and extensive source. However, the role of hUC­MSCs in vivo and the repair mechanisms for RA remain to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to determine whether hUC­MSCs exert immunomodulatory effects and have anti­inflammatory capabilities in the treatment of embolisms. Following the transplantation of hUC­MSCs into collagen type Ⅱ­induced arthritic (CIA) model rats, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vivo was performed, and the levels of interleukin (IL)­1, IL­17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)­α, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tissue factor (TF), CD4+CD25+ T cells (Treg) and antithrombin (AT) were measured. Bromodeoxyuridine staining was performed for histopathological examinations. As revealed by immunofluorescence and MRI experiments, the injected hUC­MSCs preferentially migrated to the inflammatory joint sites of the rats. The Treg cell percentage and AT levels in the hUC­MSC­treated group were markedly increased, whereas the levels of IL­1, IL­17, TNF­α, VEGF and TF were decreased compared with those in the CIA model group. The values determined for these parameters in the hUC­MSC­treated group returned to approximately the identical values as those of the control group on day 35 post­therapy. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) may serve as an effective, non­invasive method for tracking transplanted cells in vivo. The present study provided direct evidence that hUC­MSCs in the CIA rat model migrated to the inflammatory joint sites, effectively promoting recovery from collagen type II damage and thereby improving the immune­associated prothrombotic state.

Decrease in endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was reported to participate in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN). This study is aimed at exploring the relationship between the abnormalities in H2S metabolism, hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress and the activation of intrarenal renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Cultured renal mesangial cells (MCs) and streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats were used for the studies. The expressions of angiotensinogen (AGT), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin II (Ang II) type I receptor (AT1), transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) and collagen IV were measured by real time PCR and Western blot. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was assessed by fluorescent probe assays. Cell proliferation was analyzed by 5'-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation assay. Ang II concentration was measured by an enzyme immunoassay. AGT, ACE and AT1 receptor mRNA levels and Ang II concentration were increased in high glucose (HG) -treated MCs, the cell proliferation rate and the production of TGF-ß1 and of collagen IV productions were also increased. The NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenylenechloride iodonium (DPI) was able to reverse the HG-induced RAS activation and the changes in cell proliferation and collagen synthesis. Supplementation of H2S attenuated HG-induced elevations in ROS and RAS activation. Blockade on H2S biosynthesis from cystathione-γ-lyase (CSE) by DL-propargylglycine (PPG) resulted in effects similar to that of HG treatment. In STZ-induced diabetic rats, the changes in RAS were also reversed by H2S supplementation without affecting blood glucose concentration. These data suggested that the decrease in H2S under hyperglycemic condition leads to an imbalance between oxidative and reductive species. The increased oxidative species results in intrarenal RAS activation, which, in turn, contributes to the pathogenesis of renal dysfunction.

RATIONALE: induction of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 protects against experimental atherosclerotic diseases, and certain pharmacological HO-1 inducers, like probucol, inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and, at the same time, promote the growth of endothelial cells in vivo and in vitro. OBJECTIVE: because such cell-specific effects are reminiscent of the action of the transcription factor Yin Yang (YY)1, we tested the hypothesis that there is a functional relationship between HO-1 and YY1. METHODS AND RESULTS: we report that probucol increases the number of YY1(+) cells in rat carotid artery following balloon injury at a time coinciding with increased HO-1 expression. The drug also induces the expression of YY1 mRNA and protein in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs) in vitro, as do other known HO-1 inducers (tert-butylhydroquinone and hemin) and overexpression of HO-1 using a human HMOX1 cDNA plasmid. Conversely, overexpression of YY1 induces expression of HO-1 in RASMCs. Induction of YY1 expression is dependent on HO-1 enzyme activity and its reaction product CO, because pharmacological inhibition of heme oxygenase activity or CO scavenging block, whereas exposure of RASMCs to a CO-releasing molecule increases, YY1 expression. Furthermore, RNA interference knockdown of YY1 prevents probucol or adeno-HO-1 from inhibiting RASMC proliferation in vitro and neointimal formation in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: our findings show, for the first time, that HO-1 functionally interplays with the multifunctional transcription factor YY1 and that this interplay explains some of the protective activities of HO-1.

Coronary artery bypass graft failure represents an unsolved problem in interventional cardiology and heart surgery. Late occlusion of autologous saphenous vein bypass grafts is a consequence of neointima formation underpinned by smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration and proliferation. Poor long term patency and the lack of pharmacologic agents that prevent graft failure necessitate effective alternative therapies. Our objective here was to evaluate the effect of targeted inhibition of the bZIP transcription factor c-Jun on intimal hyperplasia in human saphenous veins and vein graft stenosis after autologous end-to-side transplantation. DNAzymes targeting c-Jun attenuated intimal hyperplasia in human saphenous vein explants. Adenovirus-forced c-Jun expression stimulated SMC proliferation, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and MMP-2 expression. c-Jun DNAzymes abrogated Adeno-c-Jun-inducible SMC growth and wound repair and reduced intimal thickening in jugular veins of New Zealand white rabbits 4 weeks after autologous end-to-side transplantation to carotid arteries. Conversely, in a DNAzyme-free setting, Adeno-c-Jun potentiated neointima formation in the veins compared with Adeno-LacZ. Inducible c-Jun expression is ERK1/2- and JNK-dependent but p38-independent. Injury- and shear-inducible c-Jun controls early growth response-1. These data demonstrate that strategies targeting c-Jun may be useful for the prevention of vein graft stenosis. Control of one important shear-responsive transcription factor by another indicates the existence of transcriptional amplification mechanisms that magnify the vascular response to cell injury or stress through inducible transcriptional networks.

AIM: To investigate the therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese traditional medicines Da Cheng Qi Decoction (Timely-Purging and Yin-Preserving Decoction) and Glauber's salt combined with conservative measures on abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) patients. METHODS: Eighty consecutive SAP patients, admitted for routine non-operative conservative treatment, were randomly divided into study group and control group (40 patients in each group). Patients in the study group received Da Cheng Qi Decoction enema for 2 h and external use of Glauber's salt, once a day for 7 d. Patients in the control group received normal saline (NS) enema. Routine non-operative conservative treatments included non-per os nutrition (NPON), gastrointestinal decompression, life support, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), continuous peripancreatic vascular pharmaceutical infusion and drug therapy. Intra-cystic pressure (ICP) of the two groups was measured during treatment. The effectiveness and outcomes of treatment were observed and APACHE II scores were applied in analysis. RESULTS: On days 4 and 5 of treatment, the ICP was lower in the study group than in the control group (P < 0.05). On days 3-5 of treatment, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) scores for the study and control groups were significantly different (P < 0.05). Both the effectiveness and outcome of the treatment with Da Cheng Qi Decoction on abdominalgia, burbulence relief time, ascites quantity, cyst formation rate and hospitalization time were quite different between the two groups (P < 0.05). The mortality rate for the two groups had no significant difference. CONCLUSION: Da Cheng Qi Decoction enema and external use of Glauber's salt combined with routine non-operative conservative treatment can decrease the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) of SAP patients and have preventive and therapeutic effects on abdominal compartment syndrome of SAP.
