RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Eurotium sp. are the sexual states of the genus Aspergillus, and their ascospore is a spherical closed capsule with a golden colour. The growth of Eurotium sp. during tea production is a key step in achieving the unique quality of dark tea. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between Eurotium sp. amount and Liupao tea quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: The amounts of Eurotium sp. in 26 differently aged Liupao tea samples from several factories were studied. Indicators related to the quality of Liupao tea were investigated. The amounts of Eurotium sp. were divided into 0, 105 and 106 levels, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was performed. Using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography, the amounts of emodin and physcion were determined to be closely related to the amount of Eurotium sp. Emodin was not found or occurred in minimal amounts in all raw Liupao tea samples. By contrast, physcion was found in Liupao tea at the 106 level of Eurotium sp. Liupao tea samples with varying levels of Eurotium sp. also exhibited evident differences in aroma and chromaticity. Result of the Pearson correlation test showed that the amount of Eurotium sp. plays a key role in creating the unique quality of Liupao tea. CONCLUSION: The amount of Eurotium sp. in dark tea detected via qPCR can be used as a quantitative quality indicator for evaluating dark tea. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The present study provides an efficient method for identifying the different qualities of dark tea and addressing quality control issues in fermenting dark tea.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical and imaging characteristics of the neurological damage caused by nitrous oxide (N2O). METHODS: In the study, 10 patients in the Department of Neurology of China-Japan Friendship Hospital from October 2015 to February 2018 were retrospectively analyzed for the demographic data, the history of inhaled N2O, clinical features, blood examination, electrophysiological examination, spinal magnetic resonance imaging and therapeutic efficacy profiles. RESULTS: The male-to-female ratio was 4:6 and it presented with an age-of-onset 17-26 years [the average age: (20.80±3.12) years]. The time from inhaled N2O to onset was 1 month to 1 year [the average time: (6.95±4.19) months]. Paralysis in all the patients and numbness in 9 patients were the main clinical features, while positive Lhermitte's sign in 3 patients, urinary and defecation disturbance in 4 patients were also found. Blood examination indicated anemia in 2 patients, giant cell anemia in 1 case and small cell hypochromic anemia in 1 case. 3 cases had been treated with vitamin B12 in an external hospital, and the other 7 cases had abnormal increase in homocysteine levels. Electrophysiological examinations showed sensory and motor nerve involvement in 9 patients, and motor nerve involvement in 1 patient. The severity of lower extremity lesion was significantly heavier than that of upper extremity. Spinal magnetic resonance imagings showed that long segmental lesions were present in the cervical spinal cord of all the patients, 3 cases with long segmental lesions of the thoracic cord and 2 cases with spinal cord swelling. In 6 cases, the horizontal axis had an "inverted V-type" T2 high signal, 1 case was classified as "crescent", and 3 cases were "eight-shaped". The symptoms in these 10 cases were alleviated in varying degrees after stopping the inhalation of nitrous oxide, actively supplementing high doses of vitamin B12 and doing early rehabilitation exercises. CONCLUSION: Myelopathy with nitrous oxide presents as paralysis and numbness in limb extremities. In imaging, cervical spinal cord damage is common, accompanied by thoracic spinal cord damage. The horizontal axis is more common in the "inverted V-type". Treatment with high doses of vitamin B12 is effective.

RESUMO

As aging is becoming a global phenomenon, the burden of population aging is increasing rapidly, and is soon expected to be the highest in low-and middle-income countries. China represents the world's largest population, and will face the largest number of older individuals, while the economy still remains developing. There is an urgent need to address the negative consequences of aging such as disability, that creates a myriad of challenges, including financial burden to the economy. In order to achieve successful aging-i.e., aging without being frail or disabled, the traditional healthcare model based on a disease-centered approach is not enough, but require a more holistic course. Here, we briefly outline the current scenario of aging and disability in the Chinese older population, its impact and challenges. We strongly believe that public health initiatives centered on frailty, a clinically distinguishable state of extreme vulnerability in older adults, could be the most relevant approach to meet the current needs of the aging population. Such initiatives are immediately needed to reshape the existing model of geriatric healthcare, to promote healthy aging and to reduce the burden of disability in the Chinese population.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The diffuse epidermal exfoliation seen in Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is similar to skin loss in second degree burns, and many of these patients are referred for treatment at burn centers. Treatment can differ markedly from center to center, and mortality can range from 25% to 70%, including a considerable morbidity. However, our experience over a 15-year period from 2000 to 2015 with 40 patients found a mortality rate of only 10% (4/40). The purpose of this paper is to discuss our treatment algorithm as a model for other centers treating SJS/TENs patients. METHODS: Records were reviewed for all patients admitted to the LAC+USC burn unit between 2000 and 2015 and 40 patients were identified with biopsy-proven SJS or TENS. These cases were reviewed for age, gender, initial and greatest TBSA, causative drug, pre-existing medical conditions, and morbidity and mortality. All data were entered into the SPSS statistical software package and all statistical analyses were performed using this program. RESULTS: Our treatment algorithm focused on early referral to a specialty burn unit, immediate discontinuation of the offending drug, fluid resuscitation, nutritional supplementation, and meticulous wound care. Average time to transfer to a burn unit was 3.36 days. Silver-releasing antimicrobial dressings were applied to the affected skin surface and changed every 3 days. Mupirocin coated petroleum gauze was used for facial involvement. Steroids were tapered and discontinued if initiated at an outside facility (58% of patients), and starting after 2001, all patients received a course of IVIG. All patients received fluid resuscitation and the majority received supplemental tube feedings (69%). Average length of total stay was 17.1 days and length of ICU stay 15.9 days. While 44% were transferred to another facility for further rehabilitative care, 37% of patients discharge to home. In patients discharged home with complete resolution of skin lesions, time to healing was an average of 14 days. DISCUSSION: With our 10% mortality rate in 40 patients, our study represents a relatively large study population while maintaining a relatively low mortality rate. The demographic data from our study largely aligns with the existing literature, and we therefore feel that our low mortality rate is due to our treatment algorithm, rather than to a less severe pathology in our patient population. This claim is supported by a standard mortality ratio of 1.68. This ratio proves a significantly improved mortality than would be expected based on disease severity on admission.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS NEW AND OBJECTIVE: Some evidence suggests that angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism may play a role in endothelium-dependent vasodilatation. However, the impact of I/D polymorphism on endogenous nitric oxide production, which may be of great therapeutic significance, has scarcely been studied. This study aimed to investigate this in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics. METHODS: Adult Han subjects were recruited by cluster sampling from two communities in Shunde, Guangdong province, China. Plasma nitrite and nitrate (NO(x)) levels were determined by colorimetry assay and angiotensin II and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1-alpha by radioimmunoassay. Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism were genotyped by polymer chain reaction-amplified fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Of the 779 subjects who met our inclusion criteria, 502 were with normotensive and normocholesterolaemic, 76 had hypertension only, 146 hypercholesterolaemia only, and 55 had both hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. Among subjects with hypertension only, the plasma levels of NO(x) for genotype DD were significantly lower than those for genotype II (P = 0·034). And the plasma levels of NO(x) for genotype DD was significantly higher than those for genotype II (P = 0·040) in subjects with hypercholesterolaemia only. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that I/D polymorphism has an impact on in vivo NO production in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics at the population level. Hypertensives with allele D may be benefit from L-arginine supplementation and hypercholesterolaemics with allele D may respond better to statins or antioxidants.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of paeonol on experimental atherosclerosis in quails caused by high lipid feeding. METHOD: The effects of oral administration of 300 and 600 mg/kg of paeonol on lipid levels in serum, hemorrheology and aortic intimal abnormalities were investigated. RESULT: Paeonol decreased TC, TG, LDL, vLDL, APOB100 levels in serum and TC levels in aorta and liver. The ratios of HDL/TC, HDL2/HDL3, apoA1/apoB100 were elevated. In addition, the drug reduced the whole blood viscosity, Plasma viscosity and plasma fibrinogen, and inhibited erythrocyte aggregation. CONCLUSION: Oral administration of paeonol can reduce the development of atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

The Chinese Bone Extract Granules could enhance the immunity of mice with spleen-deficiency, increase the serum calcium content of rats with bone loose, inhibit the gastrointestinal movement of mice with spleen-deficiency and improve the absorption of D-xylose in small intestine of rats with spleen-deficiency. The maximal tolerance dose for mice to take orally twice a day was greater than 50 g/kg. The subacute toxicologic test for 6 weeks of continuous feeding to rats did not show any obvious toxicity.

RESUMO

The main ingredients of Tripterygium wilfordii are total alkaloids and terpenoid lactones. The authors studied the percutaneous absorption of these compounds on mice by means of ultravillet spectrophotometry. The results showed that these alksloids and lactones could pass through the skin of the mice. The rate of 12-hour percutaneous absorption was 13.40% for the former and 17.60% for the latter. After the application of Tripterygium wilfordii adhesive plaster to the human skin for 12 hours, the two ingredients were absorbed 17.34% and 22.13% respectively. This suggests that Tripterygium wilfordii can really be administered through the skin.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To test the inhibiting effect of a Chinese herbal drug. Homoharringtonine (HH) on the wound healing process at the filtering site in an experimental model. METHODS: Posterior sclerectomies were performed in 20 rabbits. Postoperatively one eye of each rabbit received subconjunctival injections of HH and fellow eye received saline injections in a randomized masked fashion. RESULTS: 14 days after operation, intraocular pressure decreased significantly compared with that of control (P < 0.05). The number of filtration blebs was greater than that of control (14/6). On pathological examination, the number of fibroblasts per square measure of cross section of tissue cut from filtration region that was diminished significantly compared with that of control (P < 0.01). There were no serious and permanent ocular toxic and side effects. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that the HH can inhibit cicatrization at the glaucoma filtering site, promote the formation of filtering blebs and provide a sufficient evidence for the further clinical use of HH.

RESUMO

Three hundred twenty two transcutaneous bilirubin measurements (TcBM) were performed in 124 Chinese newborns with hyperbilirubinemia and jaundice in evidence. The effect of pathologic factors on the relationship between TcBM readings and total serum bilirubin (SB) levels was analyzed by multiple regression. The results of regression showed that the relationship between TcBM readings and total SB levels was affected by anemia, phototherapy, ABO and Ph hemolytic disease, and premature. Multiple stepwise regression showed that, after adjusting for each other, anemia, phototherapy and Rh hemolytic disease were the significant factors affecting the relationship between the TcBM readings and total SB levels. A practical multiple regression equation for estimation of total SB levels through TcBM readings considering the significant pathologic factors was suggested.
