RESUMO

Objectives. To understand changes in how Facebook pages frame vaccine opposition.Methods. We categorized 204 Facebook pages expressing vaccine opposition, extracting public posts through November 20, 2019. We analyzed posts from October 2009 through October 2019 to examine if pages' content was coalescing.Results. Activity in pages promoting vaccine choice as a civil liberty increased in January 2015, April 2016, and January 2019 (t[76] = 11.33 [P < .001]; t[46] = 7.88 [P < .001]; and t[41] = 17.27 [P < .001], respectively). The 2019 increase was strongest in pages mentioning US states (t[41] = 19.06; P < .001). Discussion about vaccine safety decreased (rs[119] = -0.61; P < .001) while discussion about civil liberties increased (rs[119] = 0.33; Py < .001]). Page categories increasingly resembled one another (civil liberties: rs[119] = -0.50 [P < .001]; alternative medicine: rs[84] = -0.77 [P < .001]; conspiracy theories: rs[119] = -0.46 [P < .001]; morality: rs[106] = -0.65 [P < .001]; safety and efficacy: rs[119] = -0.46 [P < .001]).Conclusions. The "Disneyland" measles outbreak drew vaccine opposition into the political mainstream, followed by promotional campaigns conducted in pages framing vaccine refusal as a civil right. Political mobilization in state-focused pages followed in 2019.Public Health Implications. Policymakers should expect increasing attempts to alter state legislation associated with vaccine exemptions, potentially accompanied by fiercer lobbying from specific celebrities.

Racial disparities in influenza vaccination persist between African American and White adults. It is critical to explore the reasons behind this disparity, which may be linked to the use of "folk" or home remedies for illness prevention and treatment. For this study, The GfK Group was contracted to conduct a nationally-representative survey (n = 819 African American and 838 White respondents). Respondents were asked about behaviors, attitudes, and risk perception related to the influenza vaccine, as well as frequency of home remedy use. Results were analyzed using adjusted logistic regression with 95% confidence intervals. In comparison to those who never use home remedies, those who use home remedies often or almost always were less likely to get vaccinated for influenza (respectively, OR = 0.70, CI 0.49, 0.99; OR = 0.27, CI 0.15, 0.49), less likely to be in favor of the vaccine (OR = 0.47, CI 0.33, 0.67; OR = 0.19, CI 0.10, 0.34), less likely to trust the vaccine (OR = 0.42, CI 0.29, 0.61; OR = 0.34, CI 0.20, 0.61), and more likely to perceive higher risk of vaccine side effects (OR = 1.79, CI 1.19, 2.68; OR = 4.00, CI 2.38, 6.73). These associations did not vary by race. Home remedy users may hold negative views toward the influenza vaccine, such that a combination of little trust in the vaccine process, and overestimation of risk associated with the vaccine itself, may contribute to vaccine refusal. Health care professionals can use these findings to tailor advice toward individuals with a preference for home remedy use to allay fears and correct misconceptions surrounding influenza and its vaccine.

RESUMO

This research compared the abilities of children and adults to perceive an optimal tempo for pieces of music. Participants heard eight melodies played at a range of tempi and made a 2AFC of "too fast" or "too slow" for each presentation. Children (aged between 5 to 11 years) and adults (aged between 17 to 54 years) showed the same variation in perceived optimal tempi across melodies. The same variation in optimal tempi was also observed when pitch variations were removed. This suggests that the rhythmical structure was responsible for the perceived optimal tempi for these pieces of music.

We explored a range of higher-level percepts in music. Participants were asked to make two-alternative forced-choice judgments of extracts of instrumental music on various dipole categories, such as happy/sad or male/female. The consistency with which each stimulus was judged on a response category across listeners provides an indication of the extent to which the musical percept can be mapped reliably onto that dimension. High consistency would suggest that the response category is related to one of the natural perceptual dimensions for music. We found very high consistency (90% +) for various response categories normally used as descriptions of people (such as male/female and happy/sad). Other types of response category gave much lower consistency. Perhaps our participants are experts in making fine distinctions in person-related categories for almost any stimulus. We tested this with a control experiment where foodstuffs replaced the musical stimuli. We did not find high agreement for person-related categories. The differences between responses to music and food were statistically highly significant.

Tempo is one factor that is frequently associated with the expressive nature of a piece of music. Composers often indicate the tempo of a piece of music through the use of numerical markings (beats min(-1)) and subjective terms (adagio, allegro). Three studies were conducted to assess whether listeners were able to make consistent judgments about tempo that varied from piece to piece. Listeners heard short extracts of Scottish music played at a range of tempi and were asked to make a two-alternative forced choice of "too fast" or "too slow" for each extract. The responses for each study were plotted as proportion of too fast responses as a function of tempo for each piece, and cumulative normal curves were fitted to each data set. The point where these curves cross 0.5 is the tempo at which the music sounds right to the listeners, referred to as the optimal tempo. The results from each study show that listeners are capable of making consistent tempo judgments and that the optimal tempo varies across extracts. The results also revealed that rhythm plays a role, but not the only role in making temporal judgments.

As recently demonstrated by overlay assays using calsequestrin-peroxidase conjugates, the major 63 kDa Ca(2+)-binding protein of the sarcoplasmic reticulum forms complexes with itself, and with junctin (26 kDa), triadin (94 kDa) and the ryanodine receptor (560 kDa) [Glover, L., Culligan, K., Cala, S., Mulvey, C. & Ohlendieck, K. (2001) Biochim. Biophys. Acta1515, 120-132]. Here, we show that variations in the relative abundance of these four central elements of excitation-contraction coupling in different fiber types, and during chronic electrostimulation-induced fiber type transitions, are reflected by distinct alterations in the calsequestrin overlay binding patterns. Comparative immunoblotting with antibodies to markers of the junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum, in combination with the calsequestrin overlay binding patterns, confirmed a lower ryanodine receptor expression in slow soleus muscle compared to fast fibers, and revealed a drastic reduction of the RyR1 isoform in chronic low-frequency stimulated tibialis anterior muscle. The fast-to-slow transition process included a distinct reduction in fast calsequestrin and triadin and a concomitant reduction in calsequestrin binding to these sarcoplasmic reticulum elements. The calsequestrin-binding protein junctin was not affected by the muscle transformation process. The increase in calsequestrin and decrease in junctin expression during postnatal development resulted in similar changes in the intensity of binding of the calsequestrin conjugate to these sarcoplasmic reticulum components. Aged skeletal muscle fibers tended towards reduced protein interactions within the calsequestrin complex. This agrees with the physiological concept that the key regulators of Ca(2+) homeostasis exist in a supramolecular membrane assembly and that protein-protein interactions are affected by isoform shifting underlying the finely tuned adaptation of muscle fibers to changed functional demands.
