Polyphosphate (polyP) accumulation is an important trait of microorganisms. Implication of polyP accumulating bacteria (PAB) in enhanced biological phosphate removal, heavy metal sequestration, and dissolution of dental enamel is well studied. Phosphorous (P) accumulated within microbial biomass also regulates labile P in soil; however, abundance and diversity of the PAB in soil is still unexplored. Present study investigated the genetic and functional diversity of PAB in rhizosphere soil. Here, we report the abundance of Pseudomonas spp. as high PAB in soil, suggesting their contribution to global P cycling. Additional subset analysis of functional genes i.e., polyphosphate kinase (ppk) and exopolyphosphatase (ppx) in all PAB, indicates their significance in bacterial growth and metabolism. Distribution of functional genes in phylogenetic tree represent a more biologically realistic discrimination for the two genes. Distribution of ppx gene disclosed its phylogenetic conservation at species level, however, clustering of ppk gene of similar species in different clades illustrated its environmental condition mediated modifications. Selected PAB showed tolerance to abiotic stress and strong correlation with plant growth promotary (PGP) traits viz. phosphate solubilization, auxin and siderophore production. Interaction of PAB with A. thaliana enhanced the growth and phosphate status of the plant under salinity stress, suggestive of their importance in P cycling and stress alleviation. IMPORTANCE Study discovered the abundance of Pseudomonas genera as a high phosphate accumulator in soil. The presence of functional genes (polyphosphate kinase [ppk] and exopolyphosphatase [ppx]) in all PAB depicts their importance in polyphosphate metabolism in bacteria. Genetic and functional diversity reveals conservation of the ppx gene at species level. Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between PAB and plant growth promotary traits, stress tolerance, and salinity stress alleviation in A. thaliana.

Warming of the earth is considered as the major adverse effect of climate change along with other abnormalities such as non-availability of water resources, decreased agriculture production, food security, rise in seawater level, glaciers melting, and loss of biodiversity. Over the years, decreased agriculture production and water quality degradation have been observed due to climatic abnormalities. Crop production is highly sensitive to climate. It gets affected by long-term trends in average rainfall and temperature, annual climate variations, shocks during different stages of growth, and extreme weather events. Globally, the areas sown for the major crops of barley, maize, rice, sorghum, soya bean, and wheat have all seen an increase in the percentage of area affected by drought as defined in terms of the Palmer Drought Severity Index since the 1960s, from approximately 5-10% to approximately 15-25%. Increase in temperature will be observed in terms of wheat yield losses - 5.5 ± 4.4% per degree Celsius for the United States, - 9.1 ± 5.4% per degree Celsius for India, and - 7.8 ± 6.3% per degree Celsius for Russia as these countries are more vulnerable to temperature increase. Water management through increasing storage capacity (or rainwater storage), fair policies for water supply and distribution, river health, and watershed management can reduce the negative effects of climate change on water resource availability. Similarly, climate change-resistant crop development, water management in irrigation, adapting climate-smart agriculture approach, and promoting indigenous knowledge can ensure the food security via increasing agricultural yield. Technical intervention can equip the farmers with the scientific analyses of the climatic parameters required for the sustainable agriculture management. These technologies may include application of software, nutrient management, water management practices, instruments for temperature measurement and soil health analysis etc. Holistic efforts of the stakeholders (farmers, local society, academia, scientists, policy makers, NGOs etc.) can provide better results to reduce the risks of climate change on agriculture and water resources as discussed in this paper. Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is a novel and minimally invasive ablative treatment for essential tremor. The size and location of therapeutic lesions producing the optimal clinical benefits while minimizing adverse effects are not known. We examined these relationships in patients with essential tremor undergoing MRgFUS. We studied 66 patients with essential tremor who underwent MRgFUS between 2012 and 2017. We assessed the Clinical Rating Scale for Tremor (CRST) scores at 3 months after the procedure and tracked the adverse effects (sensory, motor, speech, gait, and dysmetria) 1 day (acute) and 3 months after the procedure. Clinical data associated with the postoperative Day 1 lesions were used to correlate the size and location of lesions with tremor benefit and acute adverse effects. Diffusion-weighted imaging was used to assess whether acute adverse effects were related to lesions encroaching on nearby major white matter tracts (medial lemniscus, pyramidal, and dentato-rubro-thalamic). The area of optimal tremor response at 3 months after the procedure was identified at the posterior portion of the ventral intermediate nucleus. Lesions extending beyond the posterior region of the ventral intermediate nucleus and lateral to the lateral thalamic border were associated with increased risk of acute adverse sensory and motor effects, respectively. Acute adverse effects on gait and dysmetria occurred with lesions inferolateral to the thalamus. Lesions inferolateral to the thalamus or medial to the ventral intermediate nucleus were also associated with acute adverse speech effects. Diffusion-weighted imaging revealed that lesions associated with adverse sensory and gait/dysmetria effects compromised the medial lemniscus and dentato-rubro-thalamic tracts, respectively. Lesions associated with adverse motor and speech effects encroached on the pyramidal tract. Lesions larger than 170 mm3 were associated with an increased risk of acute adverse effects. Tremor improvement and acute adverse effects of MRgFUS for essential tremor are highly dependent on the location and size of lesions. These novel findings could refine current MRgFUS treatment planning and targeting, thereby improving clinical outcomes in patients.
