RESUMO

In this case report, we present a case of false positive CA 19-9 and CA 125 levels in a patient with suspected endometriotic cysts. The patient is a 34-year-old nulliparous woman with heavy black tea consumption and elevated CA 19-9 and CA 125 levels. After discontinuation of black tea intake and careful exploration of other possible factors, CA 19-9 and CA 125 levels dropped markedly. As a conclusion, heavy black tea consumption can lead to false positive results of elevated CA 19-9 and CA 125 levels.

RESUMO

We reviewed the status of the use of the prophylactic long-acting granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) pegfilgrastim and lipegfilgrastim in gynecologic malignancies. Long-acting G-CSFs should not be used in weekly regimens. Filgrastim is not indicated in patients with febrile and/or severe neutropenia after administration of long-acting G-CSF in the same cycle. One study has shown a moderate effect on febrile neutropenia of ciprofloxacin when co-administered with pegfilgrastim. There is broad evidence from meta-analyses that pegfilgrastim effectively reduces severe neutropenia. In parallel, its adverse effects have been studied extensively. All-cause mortality was significantly reduced by pegfilgrastim. The glycopegylated long-acting G-CSF, lipegfilgrastim has demonstrated antineutropenic efficacy similar to that of pegfilgrastimin in one breast cancer study. In another pivitol non-small cell lung cancer study, impaired survival was observed in the lipegfilgrastim group during the first 30 days of study. The European Medicines Agency claimed more profound safety data to be provided for lipegfilgrastim by 2017.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cervical biopsy often causes discomfort and pain. To compare local anesthesia (1% lidocaine) with forced coughing as pain relief, we quantified the actual pain experienced during cervical punch biopsies. STUDY DESIGN: For a prospective trial conducted at the Medical University of Vienna, 68 women undergoing cervical punch biopsies for assessment of abnormal cervical smears were randomized in 2 pain relief treatment groups. Patients' discomfort was assessed immediately after taking the biopsy using at 10-cm visual analog scale. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found between pain scores recorded for the 2 groups (P = .47, 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.4 to 1.3 cm). However, when local anesthesia was applied, the examination was significantly prolonged by a median of 2.11 min (P < .001; 95% CI, 1.6-2.8). CONCLUSION: Forced coughing during cervical biopsies reduces patients' discomfort to the same extent as local anesthesia, but is associated with a significantly reduced examination time.
