RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several studies have suggested that polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and minerals have beneficial effects on lipid profile and systemic inflammation in adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effects of a daily intake of milk enriched with longchain polyunsaturated fatty acids, oleic acid, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and low in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) for 5 months, on several cardiovascular (CVD) risk biomarkers in healthy children aged 8-14 years. In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, a total of 107 children of both genders were assigned to two study groups: 1) a supplemented group (SG, n=53) who consumed 0.6 L/day of an enriched dairy product, and 2) a control group (CG, n=54) who consumed 0.6 L/day of standard whole milk. Both groups consumed the dairy drinks for 5 months, in addition to their usual diet. Serum levels of adhesion molecules as indices of vascular endothelial cell activation were assessed in both groups at 0 and 5 months as well as white blood cell counts, lipid profile, serum proteins, total serum calcium, 25-OH vitamin D, glucose, insulin and adiponectin. In the enriched dairy drink supplemented group, adhesion molecules E-selectin and ICAM-1 as well as lymphocyte levels decreased while plasma docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and serum calcium concentrations increased. In the control group, serum total protein, transferrin, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and adiponectin concentrations decreased. CONCLUSION: The consumption of a milk enriched with fish oil, oleic acid, minerals and vitamins reduced indices of endothelial cell activation in the studied group of healthy children.

Objectives: To analyze the concentration of 2-3,- DPG in connection to the concentration of serum inorganic phosphorus. Casuistry: Twenty-three normal individuals and 172 patients with different concentrations of serum inorganic phosphorus (low, normal or high). Methods: Serum phosphorus was determined according to the Fiske-Subbarow method and 2,3-DPG was achieved through the method of Michal. Results: Concentrations of erythrocyte 2,3-DPG were as follows: Normal serum inorganic phosphorus: 89 cases (2,3-DPG: 5. 18±0.15 nmol/l). High serum inorganic phosphorus: 76 cases (2,3-DPG: 5.87±0.15 nmol/l). Low serum inorganic phosphorus: 7 cases (2,3-DPG: 5.10±0.89 nmol/l). Conclusions: Concentrations of serum inorganic phosphorus influence erythrocyte 2,3-DPG which increases significantly (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Hypnosis is a well known and efficient psychotherapeutic treatment. It has been stated as useful in memory improvement, however, there are only a few reports of this method in teaching, and its neurophysiological aspects. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, the authors were intended to deal with some students' academically difficulties in Histology subject, by improving their mental capacity by means of hypnosis, and then, to compare their previous bad achievements, just in the same subject, with those obtained in a test applied after hypnosis intervention. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to fulfil the proposals, seven high academically risk students were hypnotized to make them study under two very deep trance sessions, in which, some suggestions were given, such as: highest concentration, intellectual capacities reinforcement, positive affection, and also: Synthesis, reviewing, and generalization capacity enhancement. The process went into selective deafness, and selective vision as special phenomena. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Students achievements in the final test were compared to those previously obtained in the subject using the Signs Statistical Test. A significant improvement was demonstrated after hypnosis intervention.

RESUMO

Number and function of milk macrophages from 25 healthy mothers delivering preterm (PHMMo) (mean gestational age 33 weeks) were compared with those obtained from 74 mothers with term delivery (THMMo). The average concentration of MMø in colostrum did not differ among both sources: 0.55 x 10(6)/ml (PHMMo) and 0.42 x 10(6)/ml (THMMo). The mean phagocytic index of PHMMo (3.35 yeasts/cell) and THMMo (3.40 yeasts/cell) was similar (p greater than 0.05); both cell types were significantly higher than control monocytes (CMo) (1.95 yeasts/cell) (p less than 0.001). The mean chemotactic function of PHMMo (11.58 cells/field) was significantly greater than THMMo (2.75 cells/field) (p less than 0.001). However, both milk cells showed lower chemotaxis than CMo (32.63 cells/field) (p less than 0.001).
