RESUMO

Textile-based drug delivery systems have a high potential for innovative medical and gerontechnological applications. In this study, the tribological behaviour and lubrication properties of a novel textile with drug delivery function/finishing was investigated by means of friction experiments that simulated cyclic dynamic contacts with skin under dry and wet conditions. The textile drug delivery system is based on a loadable biopolymer dressing on a polyester (PES) woven fabric. The fabrics were finished with low (LC) and highly cross-linked (HC) polysaccharide dressings and investigated in the unloaded condition as well as loaded with phytotherapeutic substances. The mechanical resistance and possible abrasion of the functional coatings on the textile substrate were assessed by friction measurements and scanning electron microscopical analyses. Under dry contact conditions, all investigated fabrics (PES substrate alone and textiles with loaded and unloaded dressings) showed generally low friction coefficients (0.20-0.26). Under wet conditions, the measured friction coefficients were typically higher (0.34-0.51) by a factor of 1.5-2. In the wet condition, both loaded drug delivery textiles exhibited 7-29% lower friction (0.34-0.41) than the PES fabric with unloaded dressings (0.42-0.51), indicating pronounced lubrication effects. The lubrication effects as well as the abrasion resistance of the studied textiles with drug delivery function depended on the degree of dilution of the phytotherapeutic substances. Lubricating formulations of textile-based drug delivery systems which reduce friction against the skin might be promising candidates for advanced medical textile finishes in connection with skin care and wound (decubitus ulcer) prevention.

RESUMO

The effects of selenium (Se) in Jersey cows' diet on the aspiration of oocytes and production of embryos in vitro were studied. Groups with five Jersey cows received 3.2mg or 9.6mg Se daily, provided in the feed concentrate. Six follicular aspirations were carried out every 15 days, using only the last 5. The oocytes were classified, and standard procedures were carried out for maturation, fertilization and cultivation. The total number of oocytes (35.11±2.65 vs 23.10±2.16) and degree 1 oocytes (11.61±2.65 vs 4.75±0.97) were higher in the group that received 9.6mg Se and the quantity of naked oocytes (3.23±0.87 vs 6.22±1.18) was lower in this group. The aspirated oocytes from the cows treated with 9.6mg Se/day resulted in higher (P<0.05) embryo production 21.98±2.37 vs 13.12±1.59). No difference was observed in serum Se concentration between the two groups. It is recommended that the daily diet be supplemented with 100g mineral salt containing 9.6mg Se, since this rate rendered a larger production of oocytes, higher quantity of degree 1 oocytes and greater production of embryos in the process of in vitro fertilization.

The management of patients with thyroid cancer can be optimized by developing multidisciplinary groups of highly specialized individuals. The completeness of surgery and its morbidity are mostly surgeon-dependent. Similarly, the decisions regarding selection of adjuvant treatments, doses, follow-up schemes, and so forth require depth of knowledge and understanding of the disease; its variables; factors that govern its course; and the values, limitations, and side effects of alternative therapies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: A phase II trial of cisplatin, fluorouracil, and leucovorin (PFL) induction chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck region (HNCA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred two patients (stage III/IV, previously untreated) were treated with induction PFL. Patients with resectable primary tumor site lesions and clinical complete response (CR) were offered radiotherapy (RT) without surgery to the primary tumor site. Response, toxicity, local-regional therapy, survival, and preservation of the primary tumor site were assessed. RESULTS: Among 279 courses, the overall response rate was 81%. Nineteen (19%) failed to respond, including three who died during therapy. Sixty-seven (69%) of 97 with assessable primary lesions had a clinical CR at the primary tumor site. Pathologic CR was recorded in 46 of 55 (84%) clinical CR patients who had biopsies performed on the primary tumor site. Toxicities resulted in unexpected hospitalizations in 19% of cases. After definitive local-regional therapy, 84 (82%) were disease-free including 71 (69%) with preserved primary tumor site anatomy. With a median follow-up time of 63 months, the cause-specific, overall (OS), and failure-free survival (FFS) rates at 5 years are 58%, 52%, and 51%. Local failure occurred in 29 of 102 (29%) and the local control rate at 5 years was 68%. CONCLUSION: PFL has significant activity with acceptable toxicity in patients with advanced disease who have a good performance status. Preservation of the primary tumor site could be achieved without apparent loss of local control or survival. Management of neck disease by surgery or RT must be individualized and separate from management of primary tumor. Survival compares favorably with similar trials of induction chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.
