BACKGROUND: Phytochemical compounds can modify the rumen microbiome and improve rumen fermentation. This study evaluated the impact of supplementation with tannin and an herbal mixture containing ginger (Zingiber officinale), garlic (Allium sativum), Artemisia (Artemisia vulgaris), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) on the rumen fermentation and microbiota, and histology of rumen tissue of goats. Eighteen Shami male goats were divided into three groups (n = 6): non-supplemented animals fed the basal diet (C, control); animals fed basal diet and supplemented with condensed tannin (T); and animals fed basal diet and supplemented with herbal mixture (HM). Each animal received a basal diet composed of Alfalfa hay and a concentrate feed mixture. RESULTS: Group HM revealed higher (P < 0.05) rumen pH, total volatile fatty acids (VFA), acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric. Principal Co-ordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that rumen microbial communities in the control group and supplemented groups were distinct. The supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the relative abundances of phylum Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria and declined (P < 0.05) Firmicutes and Fibrobacterota. Additionally, the dominant genus Prevotella and Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group were increased (P < 0.05) and the family Ruminococcaceae was declined (P < 0.05) due to the supplementation. The supplementation decreased (P < 0.05) the archaeal genus Methanobrevibacter and increased (P < 0.05) Candidatus Methanomethylophilus. Tannin supplementation in T group shortened the rumen papillae. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed that the herbal mixture might be used to alter the rumen microbiota to improve rumen fermentation.

A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary supplementation with bile salts (BS), lutein (LTN), and their combination on growth, survival, carotenoid content, and antioxidant status of rabbitfish (Siganus rivulatus) larvae. Fish were fed four isonitrogenous (34.39% protein) and isoenergetic (20.57 kJ/g) diets supplemented with BS (0.15 g kg-1), LTN (0.1 g kg-1), BS+LTN (0.15 and 0.1 g kg-1, respectively), and a non-supplemented control diet. The results revealed that fish fed BS+LTN had the highest significant specific growth rate (4.37% day-1), feed efficiency (46.55%), and survival (97.78%). Lutein supplementation improved whole-body protein content, meanwhile, fish fed a BS-supplemented diet had a higher lipid content. The carotenoid deposition was significantly increased with LTN and BS+LTN in skin, muscle, and whole body compared to the control and BS treatment. All dietary supplementation of BS and LTN showed significant improvement in total antioxidant capacity, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities. Additionally, LTN alone or BS+LTN significantly reduced malondialdehyde levels by 5.30 and 29.91%, respectively compared to the control. BS supplementation modulated aminopeptidases activities, triglycerides, cholesterol, and increased the activity of pancreatic lipase. Therefore, it could be inferred that dietary supplementation with LTN in combination with BS could improve the growth performance, carotenoid deposition, antioxidant status, lipid digestion, and metabolism of S. rivulatus.

AIMS: To explore trends over time and variation in the use of anaesthetic techniques for vitreoretinal (VR) surgery in the UK. METHODS: Prospectively collected data from 13 centres contributing >50 VR operations, including either pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or scleral buckle (SB), between May 2000 and November 2010 were retrospectively analysed. Anaesthesia was categorised as general anaesthesia (GA) or local anaesthesia (LA) and results were reported by year, centre, grade of surgeon and type of operation. RESULTS: 160 surgeons performed 12â 124 operations on 10â 405 eyes (9935 patients); 6054 (49.9%) under GA and 6070 (50.1%) under LA. The percentage performed under GA decreased from 95.3% in 2001 to 40.9% in 2010. Within LA techniques, peribulbar or retrobulbar injection was used in 2783 (45.8%) operations and sub-Tenon's cannula in 3287 (54.2%). The proportions of operations performed under GA or LA were similar for consultants and trainees. Primary SB, primary combined PPV and SB for retinal detachment (RD), repeat RD surgery and complex vitrectomy surgery were more commonly performed under GA (85.8%, 67.0%, 63.5% and 69.4%, respectively), while primary PPV for RD, simple vitrectomy surgery and macular surgery were more commonly performed under LA (58.1%, 53.7% and 58.2%, respectively). Marked intercentre variation existed with the extremes being one centre with 100% of operations performed under GA and one centre with 98.3% under LA. CONCLUSIONS: LA for VR surgery has steadily increased over the last decade in the UK but marked intercentre variation exists.

The numerous physiological functions of the nonessential amino acid L-aspartate, the semi-essential amino acid L-arginine, and the essential amino acid L-lysine, made them attractive for a wide range of nutritional and/or therapeutic applications. Furthermore, the administration of these amino acids as mixtures or as dipeptides for higher bioavailability is scientifically approved, and various commercial products of these forms are already available on the market. Although the industrial production of dipeptides is, with few exceptions, in an early stage, several strategies have been established and are compared in this review. Additionally, the recent developments in the technical production of aspartate-arginine and aspartate-lysine dipeptides from the biopolymer cyanophycin produced in microorganisms are discussed. Cyanophycin-derived dipeptides are produced exclusively by biotechnological procedures, probably possess higher bioavailability and may be used as better alternatives to the widely applied amino acid mixtures. Thus, the pivotal advantages and the potential applications of these dipeptides as well as of their constituting amino acids in nutrition and therapy are also discussed. Special emphasis is dedicated to arginine due to its numerous physiological roles in many cardiovascular, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and immune disorders.
